Overrated gallery drifter.
Tsai is the most overrated faggot here. The collective cognitive dissonance when it comes to praising a faggot who shoots everything from the most boring angle imaginable, wide single shots for 5 minutes cut to another and another. Wow bravo Tsai, give him the Golden Leopard! CCTV tier hack, making the same film over and over. His only good films, which aren't melodramatic tripes are The Wayward Cloud and Face.
Zhangke, Hou, Wang Bing, Joe all clear him. Not even mentioning the slow cinema directors from Europe.

Kek, nice cope. Borowczyk does not stretch the scene to the point of complete tedium, he also deals with sex much much better. Tsai only managed to make one good film where he used sex in an interesting way - Wayward Cloud.

Spamming. I would not say he is /film/'s pet modern director anyways. There are at least 2 other ones who are as popular/acclaimed based on the talk here and charts. Tsai has 1 film in all the decades charts. The difference is that the fans of the other 2 don't spend their days obsessively spamming the threads with X director pictures.

Lee is not a method actor. He’s literally just himself. He directs Tsai as much Tsai directs him.

Oh Brother is their best comedy imho
>>
>>205167214
I just don't feel much interest in their work after those two movies. Lebowski is ridiculously overrated, -maybe even the most overrated movie of all time-, and is just a 6/10 comedy on the level of or below something like American Pie: Naked Mile. Arizona straight up sucked. Like, being honest, I don't get why people suck those jewish cocks so vehemently.
>>
I like their first film, the vengeance one
>>
>>205166869
House
Was alright but that particular style of surreal japanese absurdism is not my cup of tea, even though I do appreciate it and the conditions under which it was made
>>
>>205167498
Why did you think Arizona sucked? I mean it was anything too great, but it weren’t too bad neither. That’s sort of how I feel about them as filmmakers. I don’t love any of their movies too much, but I do still enjoy watching them.
>>
>>205168095
I just felt kinda the same as with Lebowski but amplified... I think a good term to describe their cinema would be "quirkcore"; just stuff like Wes Anderson, Sophia Coppola, Jonah Hill, etc. "Indie" films with an emphasis on giving an appearance of being unique, clever, quirki, without putting enough work into making the films actually interesting or relatable for someone that isn't interested in the aesthetic of quirkiness or cleverness. I feel like those movies are just a massive waste of my time, it feels like an exercise in looking trendy and cool more than it feels like a movie.
Now, going back to Arizona, I just felt the plot was vacuous, the acting uninspired despite containing Cage and the overall vibe of the film boring and unmemorable. Felt like a 4/10 for me. I watched it too much time ago and I don't even remember it that well, and that's troubling because I have an amazing memory (people always get astonished when I recall events from 20 plus years ago in full detail).

>>
>>205168640
Fair enough. Although, I wouldn’t put them on the same level as the other filmmakers you mentioned in terms of vacuousness. I do think they have their own convictions that they feel strongly about. What exactly are they? I’m not entirely sure. A lot of the characters in their movies are a little over the top sure, but at the heart of it all I think there is something human and relatable there.
>>
>>205169768
Strangely sensible reply. I have nothing against them on a human level, it's just their cinema that I dislike. They still have some great films though (Lost in Translation and Rushmore basically).

How the fuck did this win the Golden Lion and gets such high praises? The dialogues are a disaster (Almodovar should really stick to making Spanish movies), the acting is unnatural and lifeless and the pacing is ridiculous. I'm disappointed, was really looking forward to this one.

Boyero was obviously turbo filtered by the kitsch element in Almodóvar's kino. Just as I thought. Nigga thinks that Almodóvar makes those ridiculous tranny kinos in full seriousness. Yes, I agree. It was abhorrent. Felt like a self parody and Tilda Swinton is pretty bad in it. Bonus points for few absurd moments which reach high camp funniness but the theatrical drama doesn't work and the script is awful. His last gay cowboy short was bad too. The part with Torturro talking about climate change during the lunch with Moore was hilarious. The beginning where Tilda dumps her life story exposition and the burning house was also top tier.

Laberinto de Pasiones es putísima mierda hecha única y exclusivamente para su grupo de amigos (Mcnámara y compañía) y de no haber conocido al productor que colocó a su novia como actriz principal en Entre tinieblas, Almodovar would've stuck in second failed film director jail for 10 years minimum. Another month where Criterion Channel neglects westerns almost entirely. All they added was True Grit (2010) and only because they were doing a Coen Brothers highlight.

That brings the total amount of westerns available on their platform to 11. Historically one of the most popular genres in American cinema, thousands of movies made by Hollywood's biggest stars and directors, and they offer less than a dozen and go months without adding any.

It’s written that way. I’m still holding off reading it out of respect. I absolutely love everything else I’ve read from him but I haven’t had the courage to read more than a few pages of it so far- I know I’m not old enough, experienced enough, educated enough to come close to beginning to understand it.
I’ll tackle it once I’m in my 50s. It truly is end game literature. I don’t think we’ve had that occur for cinema yet, don’t know if we ever will.

It's hundreds of pages of puns, references, and double entendres. Joyce was not only a polyglot, but also possibly the most well-read author of the early 20th century. Finnegans is a chimera of multiple tongues and coalescing cultural references.

That being said, a lot of the analyses and interpretative texts on FW manage to supersede the actual work, personally. Philip K. Dick saw it as a predictive divination text akin to the I-Ching (he references this on the Valis trilogy). I'm not particularly well-read on Marshall McLuhan, but I find his interpretation of it intriguing as well.

>Joyce's Wake is claimed to be a gigantic cryptogram that reveals a cyclic pattern for human history through its Ten Thunders. Each "thunder" below is a 100-character portmanteau of other words to create a statement McLuhan likens to an effect that each technology has on the society into which it is introduced. In order to glean the most understanding out of each, the reader must break the portmanteau into separate words (many of these themselves portmanteaus of words taken from multiple languages other than English) and speak them aloud for the spoken effect of each word. There is much dispute over what each portmanteau truly denotes.

If we can agree that the cinematic equivalent of a portmanteau would be a match cut, then Eisenstein's Strike and Battleship Potemkin (two separate films which spiritually match cut as one film) is the Finnegans Wake of /film/. Either that or Ozu's cyclical saga.

This is why I like asian cinema so much. They don't have the Protestant fear of god. They know life is pain. Just sit back with a mcdonalds big mac while standing in front of big neon lights, running from the mob, your chubby comic relief buddy cracks a joke. Your girl is loyal. You'll probably all die in a shut out or heroin od. That's fucking cinema mates.

I found my childhood gf, a girl I knew in the first grade of elementary school. I don't know why, but I hadn't thought of her until now, I am 31 years old, All of this was literally 24-25 years ago. I had her on facebook when I was in high school, but never talked to her or interacted with her other than that one year during childhood. I deleted my facebook almost a decade ago, but searched the app for the last hour and a half just to find her profile. I finally did, but now I am facing a conundrum of how to even talk to her again. It seems like my only option is to remake a facebook profile from scratch just to add her and talk to her again. But I don't know, that shit does seem really creepy from the outside looking in and I acknowledge that, but life is too short, and we are too insignificant as people living on a speck of dust living in a cosmic second in the grand scheme of the universe for me not to talk to her again no matter how strange it all may seem at first. But I don't know. I just don't know.
