Here was my surprise-I’m Tsai Chronological Anon, and I started watching Tsai again! Got two reviews coming up-The Wayward Cloud- WOW, what a 180 turn after Goodbye Dragon Inn. Felt like a completely different filmmaker- quicker pace, bright scenes, very comical. I’ll admit, the opening sex scene along with all the graphic nudity felt quite shocking, even coming from Tsai. Bizarre storyline, crazy musical numbers, and we get to check in on the characters we’ve been following to get another chapter. It’s interesting to see his characters actually able to make connections with others now - yet they’re still superficial and surface level connections, they still long for something deeper, something more. The ending was a mix of hilarity and astonishment- kind of sums of his films as well. I liked it a lot, a very enjoyable and fun watch, but I guess the overall comical and bizarre nature of the film leaves me wanting something more “serious”.
>>205525409A rare Harper, comfy pic.
>>205533745Fuck, I meant to add this- I know a lot of people here really love this film. What do you enjoy about it? Anything I didn’t pick up on?What the fuck were they cooking in the kitchen?
>>205525314Based and blessed.
>>205533401out of the listth american society of magical negroesi saw the tv glowchallengersbones and allcivil war
I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone- now this feels like we’re back to “usual” Tsai up to now. Great use of natural lighting, don’t think I caught any camera movement, depth in the blocking/shot design is top notch. The “fishing” shot with the moth flying around and guy walks up in silhouette is one of the best shots I’ve seen from him. Final shot of the film was fantastic as well.Depressing as usual with Tsai, characters again struggling to connect and when they do, it’s superficial physicality, while still craving a deeper love. Yet still some funny moments, the coughing scene was hilarious.I honestly don’t know what to think about casting Lee to play two separate characters. When he watches himself, it was quite a surreal moment. A very minimalist film, very few words being spoken while scenes consist solely of washing someone or changing bedding- yet I was never bored or felt it was “slow” in a bad way. The closeup of the guy holding the can to his throat, with intense red eyes, was actually frightening. Id say this is his most “queer” film I’ve seen from him so far, in terms of feeling and mood. I really enjoyed it, some moments actually felt comfy even though it was overall another depressing and strange time in Tsai’s atmosphere. Excited to continue with his filmography.I think I’ve seen anons here saying this is one of his lesser films- I can understand why one might think that it doesn’t come close to his other greats, but I did still come away really liking it. What did you like about this film? What didn’t you like?
My Stinking Kid- tried to watch this and ended up skipping it. Didn’t feel like Tsai at all, don’t know what the fuck happened here. An easy cash grab? A return to his earlier TV work? What the fuck was this? And that was my surprise, caught up /film/ with my Tsai Chronological journey. I see I have a making of doc, a short, and Faces (which also I’ve seen anons kind of shit on), then starting the Walker series. Holidays are coming up so it might be another bit of a break, but I’ll try to keep watches more regular as much as I can from now on.

>>205533745Great film. Love the musical angle. Those sequences are even better here than in The Hole. I kinda wish Tsai a few more comical films, though all of his films do have very funny scenes even after this one.>>205534207>I honestly don’t know what to think about casting Lee to play two separate characters. When he watches himself, it was quite a surreal moment. The casting choice is to drive home the film's Taoist themes. Read about Zhuangzi's butterfly dream. The butterfly is there to make it clear. I know Tsai has acknowledged the Taoist themes in some interview, but fuck do I remember where it was anymore. Essentially the paralyzed man dreams of being the homeless man, as Zhuangzi dreamed of being the butterfly. Or perhaps the other way around as the Taoist story suggests.>>205534438My Stinking Kid was literally just a TV PSA. I think he made it for the money. Though I do think you can feel his touch there, even more so than in his older TV films. Not a good film though.Face is good, but a minor Tsai film. >>205533774Most of Tsai's films are comical and bizarre, sure this might be the one which is the most bizarre along with The Hole but Goodbye Dragon Inn is a comedy about cruising in the cinema. That's what makes a lot of Tsai's films work for me. He relies lot on physical comedy, similar to silent cinema. The more into the absurdity and artificiality he gets the better. The more "serious" his films are the worse they're in general. He usually explores the same concepts with the same style with little adjustments so being somber and serious just leads to films with no levity and little to no interest for me, like Days.

Ever since Godard died, the world’s been a little bit off, ehh? Just some food for thought.
Godard is dead. Godard remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become Godards simply to appear worthy of it? Just some food for thought. https://youtu.be/IkgrCL6nCog?si=dFY-kDHFpgO2CCfE

I was put on the short bus at school although I didn’t look it. I was put in the special classes. Once a girl, out of her own good will came volunteered to help out with in my classroom. The rest of the students were slobbering fools, but I, I knew I was different. I didn’t look like the others, I looked normal although my brain wasn’t. The girl came to me. She picked me out of the other retards. She asked me if I liked movies. I responded yes, who doesn’t. She asked me if I knew the films of Godard. I didn’t, but I lied and said yes. That was the last words she spoke to me. I still remember her face and her voice. Since that day, I’ve been an avid Godard fan. I love cinema… I really do.

I would kill myself if I directed this piece of shit. He was really on some lazy shit when he did this, didn't even care to hide how pointless the whole movie is. Bruh just "had an idea".Is this the guy that directed classics such as Suicide Club and Cold Fish? How did he sell out so hard? This movie and Antiporno are abysmal.
>>205581020>He's not boring but is on the level of a normal James Bond flick. Just not special at all. That seems like a fair comparison, but to be honest, I probably find James Bond movies boring too. I've seen a few. I remember thinking Dr. No was okay when I watched it at some age, as a teenager. You Only Live Twice stood out to me because I was a kid and baffled by the yellowface plot. The rest of them I've seen I barely remember. I can only assume most people don't think Hitchcock is boring, it's never a criticism I see brought up by anyone else (not that I ever see much criticism at all), but he is extremely boring to me. Rear Window and Vertigo especially. I can't even tell you how many times I've seen Rear Window, but I think I've fallen asleep watching it at least twice. I'm sure I've seen the whole thing before though because I tried to watch it again this year and when I got to the point I thought I hadn't seen, I realized I had seen it. Ironically, Body Double might be my favorite movie.
We’re all De Palma fanboys here.
>>205582478>Body Double might be my favorite movie.I hated it lol, but whatever, Hitch isn't really boring for me, just another director to add to the long list of overrated (yet only mid) directors that I don't hate or love, which in reality might be the worst place to be in for a director. People need to make you feel something, for me the 'Cock is just entertainment.
>>205579180>really enjoy, when other directors "do" Hitchcock, and I don't know whyBecause they do it better than he ever could, he could never gape his obese asshole wide enough, try as he might
>>205582478Based fellow Body Double enjoyer, it's my favourite DePalma.
>>205583259breh i can think of at least five de palma movies better than body double
>>205583425Name 6
>>205583259That makes it three of us.
>>205583663carriescarfaceobsessionphantom of the paradisedressed to killblow outmission impossiblethere's 7.
>>205582827>for me the 'Cock is just entertainment.Someone else said the same thing to me before. That his movies are just entertaining fluff, but I don't find them entertaining at all. If it weren't for Anthony Perkins I'd probably hate Psycho just as much as the rest of his films. >>205583259>Based fellow Body Double enjoyer, it's my favourite DePalma.I still haven't seen all his films but to me Body Double almost feels like the most De Palma De Palma. I love everything about it so much. I do wish there was a bit more Holly Body because she's incredible, but I wouldn't change a single second. >>205583663If someone told me they thought Carrie or Blow Out were better than Body Double I wouldn't argue against it. But for me Body Double is almost the greatest movie ever made. I seem to feel about Body Double the way most people feel about Vertigo.

>>205583773>scarfacelol opinion discarded. The least De Palma De Palma.
>>205583845Body Double is Vertigo and Rear Window with balls and soul, a morbidly obese anglo who coasted on formula and status like Hitchcock could never achieve that, and i actually like Hitchcock.
>>205584582Vertigo is more perverse than Body Double despite the more explicit nature of the latter film.
>>205581142I think that there's an interview somewhere where he talks about how much he enjoys making movies which kinda led him to a quantity > quality philosophy.
>>205584523>The least De Palma De Palma.Funny you say that. Scarface was the first of his movies I saw, and I hated it. Then I watched Carrie, The Fury, and Phantom of the Paradise and couldn't believe they were by the same guy. I figure I may like it more if I revisit it now but it's why I've been sticking to his horror-thriller stuff generally and been hesitant to get the other gangster pictures. >>205584582>>205583165>Because they do it better than he ever could, he could never gape his obese asshole wide enough, try as he might>Body Double is Vertigo and Rear Window with balls and soul, a morbidly obese anglo who coasted on formula and status like Hitchcock could never achieve thatI was trying to pull up a few links and articles cause just last month I was trying to figure out what it is I dislike about him, and I think formula and lack of soul have a lot to do with it. His films feel so unemotional and uninvolved. I wouldn't describe it as plotfag shit exactly but it does strike me as being mechanical and more about a scenario than anything else. He doesn't care about characters or acting, he doesn't seem to care about story that much, it all sort of feels like decoration? I remember reading that he wasn't even really directing his films until Psycho. Before that he would just write down camera instructions and leave it to the crew, not even bothering to stay on set.De Palma obviously reuses Hitchcock plots, that can't be denied, but other than that the comparison has never made any sense to me. Their movies don't feel alike. Hitchcock films remind me of Spielberg and Scorsese more than De Palma. >>205585029>Vertigo is more perverse than Body Double despite the more explicit nature of the latter film.Could you elaborate?
It's Bibi Anderson's birthday today
>>205585260Remember that faggot AI who didn't wanna fuck her? What a fag.
>>205562432What thing?
>>205563065The first part, yes.
>>205585260Happy birthday, Bibi! May you live many more years.
>>205585194Vertigo is about reanimating a corpse, dressing it up and trying to fuck it. Body Double is perverse and voyeuristic but in a very conventional manner. I would even say there is at least one recent film which I can think of that is more extreme than that.
I’m no child but I can’t help wonder, it seems like some kind of spell you’re under…
>>205583845>But for me Body Double is almost the greatest movie ever madelmao
>>205586787There is absolutely nothing wrong with this post
>>205586820>I would even say there is at least one recent film which I can think of that is more extreme than that.Obvious guess, but Poor Things? And thank you for elaborating.
>>205586976No problem and no, I meant Liberté
>>205586976No problem and no, I meant Wake in Fright
>>205587387>LibertéYeah, I figured Poor Things may be a bit too pedestrian for this general. I have no idea what this is.
It feels like this thread has been up forever, not that I’m complaining.
