Half of it was the investigation of what happened and the other half was showing what happened, but instead of doing what every show after L O S T did with flashbacks they separated those halfs into different episodes. This may sound like a bit of a strange one, but Roots (1977). It has its moments where it is clearly trying to pander to social justice at the time. But for the most part, it attempts to portray what life was like in the South, the good and the bad. It's also quite funny at times, sometimes unintentionally where the tone is a bit off for the scene; like this one scene where they are playing this lighthearted cheerful tune while a slave is being chased around the slave market. Has some great characters, Chicken George is a legend, and a special guest, pic related.

Adding to these, the ESPN 30 for 30 collection has a number of really interesting 1.5 hour documentaries. Sure it isn't a miniseries but there's probably four or five that are pure kino and that you could almost treat like an unconnected miniseries
