Why do so many people on letterslop hate this great film? Is it because they rather want to see filmed plays like the films of PTA, Scorsese, Chazelle, Villeneuve, etc
>>
>>214052955
what about directors like Steve McQueen who are from the UK, but clearly not English/Welsh/Scottish/Irish? just put them as UK and split the rest?

>>
>>214056544

I actually like it but in all honesty it is all sort of the same after the first striking scene. A bunch of monk-guys moving around outside, dragging Man around with them. I sort of want to re-watch it again now to review what changes during the later part of the film. IIRC there's a long shot of the monk-guys moving across the landscape that compares very well with the Seventh Seal shot.

This film doesn't follow act structure like the aforementioned filmed plays by those hack directors. It's just a pure film using the imagery and sound to create a compelling experience.
>IIRC there's a long shot of the monk-guys moving across the landscape that compares very well with the Seventh Seal shot
Yes, that scene is inspired by The Seventh Seal. Merhige was inspired by artists like Bosch, Goya, Artaud and other filmmakers
>>

PTA and Scorsese are among the best directors of all time. Chazelle did a great a film. Villeneuve's Dune series is the best space opera of all time. Check your pseudism.

Many films you disparage as "filmed plays" ammount to a more compelling experience than that 'Begotten' abortion.

Why is greek cinema so miserable?
Everyone knows that Greece - sun most of the year, beautiful nature, islands, wine, aesthetic ancient culture.
Yet this retard Angelopolous makes Greece looks like some shithole in England's - so rainy and ugly, snow in winter, people in coats, depressing.
You would think Greece would have more kino like Monella or something, some kind of chill funny kino about love of life? Am i missing some classics?

Maybe, but I guess that's a part of common sense. I've been in a lot of whorehouses, but I've never seen something sketchy going on. I also just did a quick search for escorts in Athens and the girls looked hot and free. My advice is to look for independent girls, no pimp involved. You just know you're asking for trouble if you get into shady business with pimps, gangs, and the like. And yes, even in illegal whorehouses there are independent girls.

> You know, he hired the production designer who did Guardians of the Galaxy 3 [Beth Mickle]. He went down that path with full intention, thinking, “This is the way big films are done now and I’m going to explore it.” he’s constantly frustrated by having to wait around for set-ups. The irony is that he’s the one who ordered and is paying for all of these expensive, flashy things that require so much waiting time. He prefers the tactile feel and immediacy of practical effects, but he found himself somewhat wedded to a process that requires much more planning and rigidity.
> But Francis is a legend and there’s a whole generation of these guys — Ridley Scott and Scorsese, too — who are like old generals. They need their army. But having that huge army requires a lot of planning, less improvising, and a lot of waiting around. I often wonder what it would be like to see those guys work on small films again. Francis still works in a very independent spirit, but doing so at this scale frustrated him constantly — and he was literally watching his own money burn every time he was stuck there waiting.

I gather that filmmaking is like making music. It's not just "the sum of its parts". Just like humans, you can't dissect and isolate different parts and fix them like a machine and expect things to go smoothly. The element of RHYTHM is what gives something life and makes it what it is. One could know and play all the individual chords in a song, but if they can't play them in rhythm, then there is no song. Same thing with a movie.

I wonder how do independent filmmakers get hold of their equipment. Where do you buy or rent the special cameras and film and editing boards.

Looks like....a regular crime film I guess?
Bacurau felt way too virtue signalling with it's wypipo bad shit, but it had a neat surrealist touch to it, and was interesting conceptually with how it's basically set in a kind of sci-fi future but the actual setting is rural so you can't really tell. I don't remember Neighbouring Sounds at all at this point.

>Just finished The Americans, fucking kino all the way through.
I'm happy for you anon. It's one of my all-time favorite shows (probably my second favorite behind Miami Vice). It came along right when all the 80s nostalgia/synthwave stuff was at its peak and was really perfect given it managed to be arguably the most immersive, complex depiction of both the 1980s in the U.S and the 1980s from the pov of the USSR in its twilight years.
It saddens me that we'll very likely never get any American /tv/ as good or better anytime soon.
>>
>>214099850
Zoom Zoom, you're alright with me. But don't be happy for me yet, I'm flailing around for a TV show as good and I know the odds of finding one are slim. I'd previously seen 'Patriot', which I strongly recommend. Love to see a spy just fucking exhausted all the time
>>
>>214099955
>I'm flailing around for a TV show as good and I know the odds of finding one are slim
If you want something a little older and have an 80s espionage/crime itch I couldn't reccomend Miami Vice any more. It really is a fantastic series that manages to be simultaneously of its time, ahead of its time, and overall a timeless classic that's aged gracefully. The influence it has had over popular culture and media is staggering to the point that I'd argue a solid majority of what the world considers to be aesthetically or artistically "the 1980s" comes from that series.

For me too it is Kirsten. She has the most watchable filmography, for me, of any American actor right now that's not an elderly geezer or geezette. I could watch like 30 Kirsten joints with ease. A lot of Winona's movies, even her big ones, are like a trip to the dentist's office. But not our Kirsten.

Based anon, 70s Recife was utter kino, the kinoest the third world can get, alongside Taiwan around that same time. In fact I see some similarities between Recife and that Taiwan filmed by triple H in the early 80s, and curiously enough, Recife boasts a significant Taiwanese diaspora from that time. I'd recommend watching Portraits of Ghosts if you haven't already.

I watched it and it was okay. It's just weird that Baxter throws everything he gained away just to end up with his bosses sloppy seconds and that it's considered a good ending. Why did Billy Wilder have like a weird thing for humiliating / cucking Jack Lemmon? The next movie they did together Lemmon's character starts simping for a hooker.
