A show isn't grimdark just when something bad happens. And it's not not grimdark if you put in some funny moments. It's about the overall tone and outlook of the world and people. Bladerunner and Alien are grimdark because everyond is just a pawn in a dog eat dog world. In DS9 the main characters defend freedoms and a free society, uphold family and friendship amidst danger and propagate these values even to enemies and when they fail to live up to it they are sad.

having just done a rewatch of voyager, an observation is that a lot of the episodes revolve around someone perceiving something or infected with something or is in a supernatural/space magic situation and no-one else on the crew believes them and thinks they're crazythey did this a few times in TNG but in VOY it's like every other episode
