In Aliens, yes, that is what humans were using it for. Lasers can be used for many different things. We even use them to transmit data over fiber optic cables now. Infrared lasers are cheap, but if they ever decide to go to blue or green for transmission, the data transfer rate for fiber optic will skyrocket.
