So which movies are "canon" to this show? At least Alien right? What about the the other in that series and the prequel?
>>
>>214331179
hawley said Alien snd Aliens
>>
>>214331179
the showrunner considers Alien and Aliens to be canon, and this a prequel so its ignoring the Ridley Scott prequels. So really nothing else matters to this show, its like a one-off comic

So why was Maginot's mission 65 years? LV426 is less than a year of space travel from Earth. And even if the other planets were way farther it shouldn't have taken that long. Did the writers just take the time period that Ripley was drifting in space in her escape pod and assume that was a typical travel time?

Guys, I'm crying right now.

Just looking at her picture makes me feel something strange inside. I guess you could call it "love". I'm in love with Wendy. I've lost interest in all girls, besides her.

Wendy really is all I think about all day, every day. I really do cry myself to sleep at night thinking about how I'll never be with her. If only she knew I existed in this life, if only she knew my deep profound love for her. I know that will never happen though. That is the thought that makes me so sad when I look at her. I'll never be with her, but I'll continue to love her until the day I die.

I just assume with series like this that there are different timelines. Maybe some movies are a part of the same timeline but is every movie suppose to be 1 timeline? what about the AvP movies, where do they fit into the 1 ideal timeline? Even if you wanted 1 all encompassing timeline then you would have the books and the comics to come to terms with, those couldnt all be cannon in the same timeline. between aliens and alien 3 the earth is already overran with aliens (it took 2 years in the book) according to one book series, thats not cannon for the series is it? I dont really care and just enjoy each movie as its own seperate thing and if it intends to be a sequal or prequal to another movie then thats cool too. The fan service type callback stuff to other alien movies in romulus was OK too because the movies are really suppose to be a fun horror type slasher film anyways (just dont do that every movie please)

its left a little ambiguous as to how fast they can interstellar travel in the Alien universe
they clearly have "FtL" capability but they also need cryosleep. instead of centuries to
get to another star its more like years or decades. of course a ship moving at close to
or at light speed time runs slower in the ships frame of reference, so more time will
pass on Earth, say, than it does on the ship. but they never really lay it all out for sure

Zeta Reticuli is 39.3 LY from Earth for example

yea in previous threads anons were posting some lore that they have ships of various capability
if sulaco needs 10 months to go 39ly
that's 300 days, 0.13ly/day
but that's a military class over 120 years after maginot embarked
there was bound to be huge improvement
so maginot likely needed much longer time, to visit who knows how many destinations, and not confirmed if they picked the xeno eggs on acheron but possibly
entirely feasible it needed that time, anons just bitch like faggots

It's still possible to resolve the Prometheus/Covenant and Alien:Earth timeliness. Let's say that the Maginot departs in 2055 on its mission to find alien life forms. In 2104 Wayland corp. receives David's transmission and diverts the Maginot to whatever hell-world David created and the crew collects the samples from there.

The writing is fever dream quality. It's still so dumb the hybrids got sent out to a search and rescue. Not a single kid has any training and the adults are fine letting the hybrids jump into a dark, deadly maze under a crumbling tower.
If the writers weren't smoking crack cocaine they could've placed the kids in the tower because of a "field trip" or some shit. At least the hybrids would have a natural reason to be anywhere near a smoking ruin of a ship.
This nitpick is making me madder than it should but I'm going to keep watching anyways because at least I can't be let down.

Sulaco was much, much, faster.
"How long after we are declared overdue can we expect a rescue?"
"17 days"
So a day to get ready, and 15 days of travel, and another day to get from space to the surface.
The Maginot is one of the original spacefaring ships. It's quite slow.

Nostromo was 4 months in each direction I think. The older the ship the slower the FTL abd it also matters if it's an industrial shitheap, a syperyahct or a military vessel. There isn't a singular measuring stick.
>>
>>214343699
>Fargo to this
?
He was always just dependant on the strength of the media he was adapting. Fargo and other Coen movies got him 2 to 3 decent seasons and then just coasts on the fumes. Alien doesn't stretch as well. Episode 5 was a good example. Just re-adapt the first Alien movie and the stupid fans go wild. But outside that he's no better than someone writing Alien vs Predator.
>>
>>214345753
so how is gonna do 5 seasons of Erf?
>>
>>214345499
Eight months from Neptune to Thedus. Two months at Thedus to load up, then it was supposed to be ten months from Thedus to Neptune to offload the refinery and then to Earth.
All I can figure out is that winding up to FTL speeds and slowing down takes a good bit of time for ships of Maginot and Alien era.
By the time of the Sulaco, it appears that the speed up and slow down times for FTL have been significantly reduced.
The Nostromo getting yanked out of their speed up to FTL for the LV-426 beacon basically made them start over their ten month travel time. That's a large part of the reason I believe that that the speeding up and slowing down from FTL speeds is the most time consuming part of the trips.

Without Fede it might just be monsterslop and lose the erotic horror element he's known for. I remember in Evil Dead where the possessed girl said she wanted to suck her brother's cock, and made out with that other girl after cutting her tongue in half. And the turkey baster insemination in Don't Breathe. Fede was perfect for making a rapealien movie in line with Ridley's original movie.
>>
>>214345646
Nostromo left in 2120. It had to be back before Mar 2123, according to Ripley saying that she would be back before Amanda's eleventh birthday.
Getting yanked out of their speed up to stop at LV-426 ruined their chances of making it back in time as it was June of 2122 when the Nostromo visited LV-426.

>all alien lifeform that are shown are parasites

How do these species even exist, as there seems to be no space sheep or whatever. Even if , for some bizarre reason, all were gathered on a single planet, there has to be other aliens and they decide to just bringt parasites to earth. Thats like landing on earth, catching ticks instead of the animals that could be used as source of materials / meat or function as predators in this ecosystem (like a tiger, if you want something to weaponize).

Ripley translates a small fraction of the message quickly and she is concerned about it.

I know that was put in as a joke, but Walmart is genuinely about the size of Amazon. Plus they work in the same general industry (freight, logistics, R&D, etc) which would make WY an obvious acquisition targe, especially if some big crisis (geopolitics or xenomorphs) threw WY off balance. It would be weird and newsworthy, to be sure, but Walmart buying WY would be on par with Nvidia buying Meta.

Prometheus fucked up by retconning stuff from the first movie, but that’s because Ridley said he didn’t want to consider anything besides the first. Even then he couldn’t get details correct.

In Aliens it’s established they didn’t know which of the moons of Calpamos the Nostromo had stopped at due to no life recorder from it. When they found Ripley, they got the news, and that’s what inspired Burke to message the colony to look in a particular area.
>>
>>214346985
Walmart is a freight and logistics company that sells direct to consumer. In a world where space travel is a thing, they absolutely have a spacefaring fleet. Maybe they’re literally this timeline’s version of Amazon, too; remember that there was no home computer revolution to spawn big tech and computer-based logistics hardware is so expensive that a startup isn’t exactly gonna be able to compete, so Walmart may have just become an Amazon-like consumer shipping monopoly.

they should just put the damn flat screen touch screens and shit in, they were in 2001: a space odyssey so who gives a fuck. and prometheus made it clear that they exist. the only reason they had CRT screens in alien was because it was the only way to have working screens on the ship's film set. if they want to, they can give the flat screens some rounded corners and make them clunky as fuck to match the aesthetic.
>>
>>214347374
>>214347355
Prometheus had crazy tech. I think the issue here just comes to Internet and the fact the ship is so far away it wouldn't be in the same time
>>
>>214347355
That’s different. Prometheus, whatever we think of the decision to do so, was 2010’s-punk and this is ‘70s-punk. One is an aesthetic choice and the other is being too retarded to know how technology works.
>>
>>214347412
It makes sense to stick with CRT’s if you’re going with “this is an alternate timeline that diverged in the ‘70s”. IG you wanna do Prometheus, go for the 2010’s aesthetic.

>Screens years in the future are clunky analogue things
Seems to be just a Maginot's mother thing, they had wendy watching Ice Age so bare minimum the earth there has graphic technology capabilities similar to when that movie released here.
Mechanical keyboards are the best way to command machines and it sending only what's needed to get what's needed I'd call efficient and smart if anything.
>>
>>214347653
Are we seriously considering Ice Age being canon in Alien? When chronologically that would mean both Alien and Aliens (The IRL films) are canonical to the Alien series?
>>
>>214347472
i could make alien look like a a diverged 1970's alternate without CRTs and people would eat it up. i'd put some old CRT monitors here and there in non-essential uses and use bulky, low-res flat screens everywhere else. i like that alien earth tried to keep the 1970's style, but the pseudo-CRT TV screens with the weird downwards angle look so stupid, i would've just thrown out all that shit.
>>
I find it interesting how the 2010’s aesthetic of Prometheus seemed to connote that humanity was at an earlier stage of space exploration than the ‘70s one of the original movie.

The original one was made before the microprocessor revolution, so using the aesthetics of that time connotes a future where man just leapt into space after the moon landing, so a ‘70s aesthetic implies we’ve been in space for much longer.

Meanwhile the 2010’s look is filled with shit that requires the microprocessor, making it clear that man did take a detour into inventing computers and is only now just stepping into the stars. So despite looking more advanced, it ironically makes us look way less capable at space stuff.

I think it has to do with distances and slow speeds (comparatively) in the original Alien. WY probably were aware of some signal in that area, but a gas giant like Calpamos could have scores of moons.
So, and this is just me guessing, Ash was brought in to replace Nostromo's science officer at Thedus at the last second because WY knew the ship's path would bring it within range of Zeta II Reticuli and he could check it out. Why he didn't send a message? Maybe he wasn't ordered not to for security purposes, or maybe he didn't have access to comms until Dallas was taken (and by then he was acting erratically).

For all we know, more WY ships might have had synthetics placed on board for other trips in the event of similar signals.

The Nostromo is a space trucker vehicle. It's tech is going to be robust and out of date, just like today many industrial and government run systems still run programming language from the 1950s.
>>
>>214350765
the nostromo ship and its crew were backwater hicks driving a space truck and then getting caught up in something way above their paygrade
the maginot ship and its crew were copypasted for absolutely no discernable reason (apart from the tech being shit as the ship left Earth in 2055 I guess) because WY sent them out specifically to hunt down and capture dangerous xenos and Grandma Yutani even assigned her favorite cyborg warnigger as its chief security officer
why the fuck didnt she send a squad of mercenaries who are as loyal as warnigger was to accompany the civilian crew remains an eternal mystery

The WY doesn't even know exactly what's in the cargo on their potential uses, that's why they were doing preliminary tests on them. Dada sugest the specimens might be valuable. They want it because it's theirs, can't let some fag steal it under their noses.

>am i not enough of a zoomer to enjoy this retarded slop?
You speedwatch and type like one.

didnt it take the crew in alien earth like 80ish years to collect the first batch of eggs? why even bother sending another human crew when in alien earth the big 4 corpos essentially control entire countries and could theoretically just bring that shit in with no issues. just send in a full synth crew. why the fuck do they keep sending extremely expensive fragile hardware and people to collect these things? wtf is wrong with them
>>
>>214336051
you could do worse. there are some retarded parts but it's not unwatchable so far. 6-6.5/10

The really retarded thing is that Morrow fucking sees the saboteur and still thought it could be anyone.
>>
>>214351626
the round-trip travel time to get all the specimens was 86 years. it was yutani's grandmother that started the expedition. point i was making was if alien earth is before alien and WY already knew about the xenomorph. why bother sending in a live crew or setting up that terraforming station just to get xeno eggs?
>>
>>214351691
it was also kind of dumb how the lead engineer and his apprentice were kind of dicking around despite how serious the situation was.
>>
>>214351725
>the lead engineer
He wasn't even the lead engineer. They knew the ship was in serious trouble and instead of immediately going to wake the actual lead engineer, Morrow says "no, too many people means too many emotions" lol

>>214351703
So far the Alien has been a dork, so chances they'll forget about it until the Events of Alien.

Yeah dialogues are poorly written and the character psychology is atrocious. The lead engineer was the saboteur tho.

also the doctor performing open surgery trying to remove alien organisms with literally no protective equipment of any kind was fucking retarded. literally on par with the retarded scientist on Prometheus who played around with the vagina cobra and the retards who go into an alient planet with no masks in covenant. like holy shit where do they hire these people

People may complain but as far as creature design goes I say "Keep It Simple Stupid" is a good rule of thumb unless the artist knows his shit to make a design that is otherworldly and complicated that works well.

And Giger knew it(as did whoever worked on the Xenomorph queen since as Giger gave its design some nice compliments), but for some other cases like the new xenos I'd be skeptical if they would find an artist good for it, be it because they dont know any good ones or just want to save on cash.
>>
>>214352039
>where do they hire these people
They're the cheapest H-1B immigrants, just like modern American corporations. Who else would sign for a dangerous 65 years mission?
>>
>>214352083
>>214352198
hell i'm not asking for total realism but the incompetence being shown boggles the mind especially for a high value deep space secret mission which costs an assload of money considering the trip in prometheus supposedly cost weyland a trillion dollars. if you're going to go all in on a collection mission that could take close to a century before returning, wouldn't you want to send the absolute best and brightest? granted I guess it makes sense to have "crew expendables" on board but this is just dumb as hell. the retarded apprentice is still like in high school or some shit
>>
>>214352232
>send an expendable retarded crew on a mission where the cargo returning safely to Earth is the single most important task
that makes sense, clearly you dont need a crew to get that ship back to Earth after that 65-year long trip
>>
>>214352232
Critical failure on these missions sounds something expected so guess they send several of cheap ships. So far the only expensive things might be the ship itself (assuming it's new and not a repurposed old model) and the fuel (was the fuel even mentioned in previous Alien films?). Everything else it's cheap.
>>
>>214352296
>Critical failure on these missions sounds something expected so guess they send several of cheap ships.
it would actually be cool if they were in a small flotilla of 3 ships where it's expected to actually lose 1 or 2 of them.
> So far the only expensive things might be the ship itself (assuming it's new and not a repurposed old model) and the fuel (was the fuel even mentioned in previous Alien films?).
fuel was never mentioned but i'm sure that the whole expedition was a trillion dollars back in Prometheus. probably because the tech level was still in its infancy and weyland was desperate.
>>
>>214335180
AvP isn’t canon
>>
>>214352354
>it would actually be cool if they were in a small flotilla of 3 ships
Not really, it makes more sense to send every ship to a different place. Chances most of their 65 years were checking lifeless planets between cryosleeps. I won't be surprised if most expeditions return empty handed of with just a couple of useless critters.

>i'm sure that the whole expedition was a trillion dollars back in Prometheus
They used state of the art technology and, allegedly, the best experts that money could buy. Its a completely different situation.
>>
>>214352354
according to >>214334736 the Maginot left Earth 38 years before Prometheus
then again the creators of Alien: Earth dont treat Prometheus and Covenant (and Romulus) as canon and Weyland's ship was noticably way more advanced than the Nostromo and the Maginot
>>
>>214352442
meant more that they meetup in a group when returning to earth. could be a nice set piece to having multiple dangerous xenos running around.
>>
>>214352442
>the best experts that money could buy
yeah, I doubt that. the fucking geologist with the advanced mapping equipment is the first guy to actually get lost.
>>
>>214352525
The biologist sees a dead alien and runs away. Bad writing is bad writing.
>>
>>214352491
That sounds like a logistic nightmare, coordinating all ships with FTL shenanigans. Relativity doesn't seem to exist in Alien universe tho.

I do agree that a flotilla its cooler, it could be an interesting premise, as in one ship gets fucked, other tries to help and their crew gets infected so the 3rd should decide to help or leave.

>>214352525

The Maginot sabotage and crash into Prodigy territory was a trap set by Yutani. She knew Kavalier would want the aliens so she arranged for them to crash into his territory, giving her a reason to nuke him out of existence under the pretence of saving mankind, once Morrow collected enough specimens.
>>
>>214352664
While writing isn't exactly Alien Erf strongest point the crew being retarded and the expedition cheap its justifiable. Not that they even tried to add a couple dialogue lines about it tho.

Yutani territory is the Americas, separated from Prodigy territory by the oceans. It's minimal risk for them and gives them a reason to destroy Neverland and Prodigy, thus explaining their non-existence in the canon after Alien.

>>214352754
Yutani would not have informed Morrow.

>Yutani territory is the Americas, separated from Prodigy territory by the oceans. It's minimal risk for them and gives them a reason to destroy Neverland and Prodigy, thus explaining their non-existence in the canon after Alien.
the point is they do not have complete information on their extraterrestrial cargo. it's an extremely stupid and risky move to risk the fucking planet just to take out one of your competitors. you think it's fine because we have hindsight and watcher/reader knowledge. the fucking xenomorphs could reproduce via airborne spores for all the know. again look to the scene where the two retarded doctors die to bug farts.

again, they do not have complete info about them. they don't know that a lone drone will eventually morph to a queen if left alone long enough. xenomorphs can and have overrun planetary populations in multiple alien comics. it's an incredibly dangerous and retarded plan that can easily bite you in the ass
>>

they're all retarded. that's why. we have stricter containment procedures for earthborn illnesses and pathogens. while I don't expect them to go for complete realism a bit of common sense would go a long way for the writing.
>>
>>214353615
>we have stricter containment procedures for earthborn illnesses and pathogens.
they even lost members of the expedition retrieving these aliens so they are well aware they are deadly and dangerous to humans

why the fuck are they experimenting on them anyway

>>
>>214353245
Remember, this show is partly about the hubris of corporations and the people who run them. Kavalier is an amoral scumbag who's not as smart as he thinks he is, and Yutani is a bitch too. These people don't give a fuck about the little people, they think they're safe in their ivory towers. Having some aliens crash in Prodigy territory on the other side of the world, giving Yutani plausible deniability for wiping out Neverland, is exactly the kind of shit ruthless CEOs would pull.
>>
>>214353399
