80’s definitely not peak of horror. There was endless slop in the 80’s. America became hyper capitalist in that decade and it was reflected in its movies. Full of diversity and the damage Africans were doing to USA was very noticeable as was their growing population.

This one made me sad. It's rare for a horror film to impart with with a feeling of sadness, and it's all the more memorable for it. Zohra Lampert as Jessica strongly reminded me of Shelly Duvall in The Shining.

What the fuck was that big wooden thing that showed up in their foyer in the third act?

Sometimes I come across a horror film with all great horror elements, made at the right time and checking all boxes and wonder why I've never heard of it before.
Well, 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after only 9 reviews.
Probably, I think, it's just another forgettable slop in the immense sea of slops in this genre.
How wrong I was.
This is by far one of the most entertaining films I've seen this year.
With an extremely tight premise with so much room to explore in sequels. But it ended up in limbo... relegated to oblivion.

This should be a certified classic with a large cult following, like Ghostbusters or Evil Dead.

10/10

>first impression
it's a terrifier rip off
>last impression
it's a cheap terrifier rip off with inclusions of rob zombie's halloween with generic synthwave playing over every scene
shot mostly on cheap sets, abandoned buildings, and people's homes. with stock footage for establishing shots to fill the gaps
had one baffling moment where it rips a scene out of terrifier 1 almost word for word
surprisingly good gore though
a solid 5/10

The first one was already obviously a Terrifier ripoff with the killer acting 100% like Art, but it was also obviously a student tier movie project stretched to 50m
The second at least actually is a movie, a cheap one for sure but that's most horror, at least it has decent practical effects.

People make it out to be one of the worst films of all time when it’s really not. I enjoy the first half with the professor a lot, and their reactions to whether or not they can release the film is interesting. It’s too bad the documentary crew in the second half are kind of just comically evil with the shit they do.

Yes, I couldn't agree more. I wish it hadn't been so short but her 5-10 minute scene made the whole thing worth it. I should have watched the 5 hour version because there's no break. I watched Pt. 1 the other day and it was intense, I was glad for the reprieve and now I'm reticent to go back to watch the rest. I should have taken it all in one mouthful. It's very funny and sad. Uma's scene was peak Lars humiliating hilarity. And it's Moby Dickian like I suspected. People think it's a porno movie, that's facile. I don't know how people could watch the scene of her watching her dad shit himself in his hospital bed and think the sex scenes that sandwich it are supposed to be titillating.
>>
Who's watching Wayard this month?
>>
>>214359892
Cute Notdasha.

Some people prefer the theatrical cuts... The director's cuts are closer to Lars' vision, but the theatrical version is, well, easier to swallow, heh. Did I mention that there was an episode of the Bret Easton Ellis podcast where he had a literary translator as a guest who was comparing Nymphomaniac to Moby Dick? I think I did.

The first time I "watched" the movie was at a house party after coming back from a big anime/gaming/horror convention, one of the people in the group I was with bought a copy and for some reason put it on during the party. I was sitting in the living room with a bunch of people I didn't know(they were all friends of friends), talking, drinking, having a pretty chill time, until there was a lull in the conversation and one guy looks at the screen and goes "what the fuck are we watching?"
Seminal memory for me.

Its a shame this film is so beautifully shot but is given such a frustrating script, like characters have to be such gigantic assholes or do ridiculously stupid shit just to keep the runtime going like the dad interrupting the cleansing ritual. Maybe I'm just spoiled on When Evil Lurks or other exorcism film, maybe I'm just not a fan of the korean melodrama, I don't know. But one thing I do know is that this absolutely did not need to be 2 and a half hours long. The filmmakers could have easily restructured it better to be less about nip seething and had the climax just be the fight between the cool dancing priest and the black magic nip man.

I have no doubt. I don't think it's malicious, but as someone with resting sad face, I do get annoyed when people occasionally tell me to smile more. Either I was already in a decent mood and that person is inadvertently remarking that I look like I'm a catty bitch, or I was too sad to smile and it's annoying in that regard to be asked to pretend happy on request like I'm a rock band and someone is yelling "PLAY FREE BIRD!" at me and I don't want to play Free Bird or can't muster the energy to do so. I imagine for beautiful women they probably get asked way more, probably even every day or multiple times a day sometimes, so it's probably just exhausting. I remember I went to a requiem mass for my grandmother and some fatass told my sister to smile outside the church. Of course he probably didn't know why she did not want to smile, but it just reflects the oftentimes self-absorbed nature of the request, where the asker doesn't think it might be inappropriate to ask a stranger to regulate their emotions, when there may well be a perfectly sound reason why there is no smile.

Phantasm 2 disappointed me after how much I loved the first one. They took such a unique and original premise I've never seen in a horror movie and made a sequel that was clearly influenced by every popular horror movie that was trendy during the period. They ruined the franchise by following trends instead of staying true to what made the original so different both in it's tone and it's story.

FUCK Phantasm 2.

No, you rented 1 erotic horror movie and 2 regular ones so the clerk didn't think you were a coomer. It seems like erotic horror was more a 2000s trend. Before that it was exploitation or low budget slasher movies with lots of boobs. Or you could go with the erotic thriller

It's really hard to tell. On one hand it could have been pure kino, on the other just the most cringey lib pandering possible.
The way to do it would be don't try to pump it full of underlying themes, the sheer weight of a maniac cop slaughtering citizens and police alike does all the hard work and everything falls out from that. I thought the original films did a good job of walking that line.
>>
>>214369461
yeah it would have been either really good or really shit. rarely an in-between with refn. i wonder how he would have approached it stylistically. like would it be more of a foray into traditional style/classic horror, or would he go full refn on it? oh well, what could have been.
