"The Peripheral" was based on William Gibson's popular "Jackpot" trilogy. I'd call that a successful brand name attached. So why only 1 season? You may need to face the simple fact that you've lost this argument, and that Lower Decks making it to 5 seasons was a ringing endorsement of the show.

Millennials were the last generation whose parents thought would have a better future than they had. That’s another less obvious reason birthrates have collapsed. Star Trek was made when people were excited their children might become astronauts. Now we hope our kids will have jobs at all.

TNG is deeply funny if you bond to the characters like they're your co-workers. Riker always makes me laugh for some reason. His scream when Worf killed Duras killed me. That and "DATAAAA SOMETHING'S GOT MEEE", "YOU'RE A DEAD MAN APGAR", and just his general smug demeanour.

I don't have a list handy, but the moment in "The Neutral Zone" where the 20th century lady passes out from shock after seeing Worf was pretty funny,. Same for Data's mimicking of Commander Hutch in "Starship Mine", and Data learning how to tap dance for a wedding in "Data's Day". Or pretty much everything about Okona. Or pretty much everything about Riker in "A Matter Of Honor", especially "one at a time, or both of them together?" I could go on.

A Matter of Perspective was one of the funniest Trek episodes ever. You have the absurd plot, the campy acting, the cold open where Picard nearly starts the Fourth Reich. Reaction images galore. This is TNG firing on all cylinders.

See, I've been watching TOS for the first time recently, and it's truly shocked me how clever some of the good episodes are. I thought the Menagerie two-parter (which reuses footage from the pilot) was incredible, not really because of the writing in itself, but because of the way it recycles material in a way that feels cool and coherent.

See, that's the sort of seething opinion, disguised as objective fact, that drags this general down into the mud. This is your subjective taste, no more. Speaking for myself, I could never warm up to DS9; it was basically a soap opera in space, and I have no interest in that. I even tried watching the highly-rated episodes (skipping seasons 6 and 7 completely...I long ago became bored with military sci-fi), and still couldn't find anything to interest me. I liked much of TOS; I appreciated the "Wagon Train in space" motif, together with a healthy dose of "Outer Limits", though some episodes annoyed me to distraction. TNG had good parts, but was largely "social workers in space". Still, I found enough to enjoy that I consider myself a Trek fan. I refuse to succumb to the cringe that is being a Trek critic.

The commonly touted fallacy of Nu Trek shills is that we hate Nu Trek because "old good, new bad," but the reality is that true Star Trek fans are starved for the real thing. We badly, badly desire Nu Trek to be good but it falls so utterly and disastrously short of what are ultimately reasonable and forgiving expectations that we can do nothing but shake our heads in disgust at the misuse of the franchise.

A show like Lower Decks is insulting to our intelligence. It doesn't even matter if it's good (though it isn't) because its very existence is a sham -- an example of shameless profiteering and shoddy market research when Paramount does literally everything in the world except make a post-VOY Star Trek series that carries things forward in the model of what came before.

>>
>durr you guys like anime and things that are also not as good as Star Trek, so you must also like shitty sub-par Star Trek
No. We can maintain different standards of quality for different things. Whether you like Lower Decks (lol you are a fucking pleb) or not, you should be able to agree with us on one thing: it is not Star Trek. It's a parody of Star Trek, basically a long Robot Chicken episode. But again, it is NOT Star Trek.

Their attempts to make actual Star Trek have both been disasters in terms of quality: STD and SNW. Both set in unwanted timelines, both retreading famous old characters instead of actually pushing forward and EXPLORING new ones, both basically just generic science-fiction series but simply branded as being Star Trek.

I agree with you. The one of them tried to claim that it's an objective that it "isn't Star Trek." Yes it is. It just means you only like some Star Trek and not all Star Trek. I happen to like all of it except for Picard. Doesn't mean I'm going to claim like a fucking schizo that just because I don't like it that it "isn't Star Trek." Yes it is. It's not LOST. It's not Star Wars. It's not a Broadway show. It's not Farscape. It's Star Trek. It's bad Star Trek, like the musical episode of SNW or Shades of Gray or Beverly Crusher fucking a ghost or Kirk being body swapped with a woman, but it's all Star Trek. There's good and bad Star Trek. I don't mean to keep hammering the point but the geezer I'm not replying to, he just doesn't seem to understand how to define basic things. It's just basic definitions. Lower Decks IS Star Trek. Because it's not anything else. Fucking trolls, I swear. And for the record I'm tired of being bullied by these geezer faggots. Picard Season 1 struck me as being like Caprica: an idea (about emergent AI sentience, no less) that was shoehorned into the Trek universe. Much like Caprica, it was doomed to fail.
PIC S2 was ruined by COVID and being forced to film in Modern Day LA, but they could have done something with the "Q is dying and has one last lesson" thing if they led with that. Instead they half-assed it by saying Sure let's do a lame rehash of All Good Things and TVH
>>

>>
>>214364286
NTA but I've published my Star Trek fanfic on various relevant sites on the Internet. (And yes, as promised, some of the character are based on seething assholes I've encountered in this thread. See if you can find it.) My work gets ignored, but that doesn't bother me. Internet users are drowning in content these days. I subscribe to the "write, publish, repeat" philosophy; the only way I can become known as a writer is to keep trying.
>>
Like I give a shit about what a tripfag thinks. We're in /trek/. We watch trek. If you don't talk about it because you don't watch that's a (you) problem.
>>
>>214364298
Actually, I find their arguments to be painfully nonspecific. They say "hurr durr nutrek sucks". I say "cite specific examples". They never do. This is geezer logic, probably driven by a lack of plasticity in their aged brains. They can't change, they can't adapt, they can't appreciate different viewpoints, so they just rant. I'm surprised they haven't called me a whippersnapper and demanded I get off their lawn. Still, they make me happy... at least I'm not them.
>>
>>214364302
That argument is specific to LD. But you seethe about any Trek from 2009 onward. So your argument is disingenuous. Again. You're painfully predictable.
>>
This is kinda depressing. They should have just made a cool Trek museum with all that stuff.
>>
>>214364373
Let me turn the argument around. Why are you so sure SNW, Picard, and LD had nothing to offer? I've only watched 4 episodes of SNW, but like what I see so far. I powered through S1 of Picard, a.k.a. soulless nostalgia trip, and have no desire to watch any more. But I thoroughly enjoyed LD and have rewatched it several times. You have done none of these things.

Its tough. I tried making a StarTrek:TNG episode from a rough script I wrote up 10 years ago and I gave up after 2 days. The coherence is really the biggest problem. I think it's "close" to being "acceptable", but not quite yet, we need a few more tools to really hit it home.

I can see big money being made from legit good fan episodes though if they run a patron.

Have watched 4 episodes of LD and I havent seen anything that has catched my attention for SNW. but I might try it at some point.

Don't forget Gene cheated on his wife (AND his mistress) with Nichelle, too
Black pussy man

I love listening to Nimoy talk about Star Trek he seems like more of a real human bean than the others or something idk how to describe it

He has less of the average actor's sense of self-importance.

You can tell Nichols and Takei in particular are divas.
I think Walter Koenig is pretty interesting too. He never seemed to give much of a shit or take the acting gig too seriously. He's a pretty intelligent guy.

Must be nice to know everything. I'm sure the CIA pays you major bucks to shortcut their usually lengthy and methodical gathering of intelligence. Or maybe you're just an average, everyday, garden variety seether.

fucking kek

I got a slap on the wrist from (starfleet command) for telling a (romulan) than nobody was gonna be fooled by his ploy, because apparently it was (not within the confines of mission parameters). The (romulan) wasn't punished at all of course

He had more fun as Bester on B5 and as the corrupt priest in Mad Cowgirl.

I had heard of the Star Trek "first interracial kiss" but what nobody tells is that it's one of 2 rape kisses in a totally feel-bad episode full of cruelty

Should've taken a screenshot, that's a legendary self-report

The one where she almost throws herself into the plasma stream was pretty good. And the one where she wakes up romulan. When she's doing things besides sitting in her office going hmmm she's not a bad character.

how is tuvok only a lieutenant if he is like 90 something?

Yeah but that totally real Southern guy said he don't cotton to no whites and niggers kissin', unless it's a red-blooded all-American boy and a hot black bitch then it's OK.

The irony here is just too rich. Some fucking boomer is complaining about not knowing what loggerheads is and blaming zoomers for using it and making it up when it's basically an archaic word that originated from the Renaissance.
