https://actvid.rs/movie/watch-scarecrows-full-1031

Review!
> I would avoid trailers as they tend to be spoilery.
> Among my favorite horror films. Not top favs but still up there for sure.
> Great focus on unnerving tension & mood.
> Isolated farm setting is well used.
> Damn good score.
> Characters despite mostly being criminals are fleshed out well enough with each having their own ticks & bonds with each other. I particularly like Corbin who just seems like the brutal muscle of the group but ends up showing himself to have a lot of honor & compassion.
> Ending is a bit mean spirited but it works.

Trick 'r treat is so comfy around Halloween. The whole atmosphere is comfy Halloween vibe. Having a few little loosey connected storylines instead of one big one is nice too. Fun easy watch.

Also Scream is actually pretty comfy if you watch a lot of horror. Lots of fun references.

The Thing.
Besides that one, late 90's, early 2000's schlock action horror like Ghostship, The Cave, Event Horizon, House On The Haunted Hill, The Haunting.
Big budget horror movies that was so poorly executed that they're not even slightly scary, but usually have good set pieces or premise that they're entertaining enough in their own right.

Man ive been trying to remember a horror movie for years and i hope you guys can help based on a very shitty description.

It had a scene where a guy is tied to 2 trees one of which is pulled down to the ground via a rope and when the rope is cut the tree rips him in half.

Next month I'll be seeing New Group, Dust Bunny, and Karmadonna (word outta TIFF is it's shit) at Brooklyn Horror Film Fest.

Also next month is Sitges. Hoping to catch Obsession (raves from TIFF), Life of Chuck, Exit 8 (good word of mouth from TIFF), The Furious (more TIFF raves), Buffet Infinity, The Home (not the Pete Davidson movie), Decorado, Forbidden City, Deathstalker, and one other screening. might also try to grab a free screening of Death Cycle.

I’ve been watching a lot of 60s horror movies lately and I can honestly say now it’s shocking how underrated this decade is for the genre. Everyone always says the 70s and 80s are the best decades and I used to agree with that but now I’m not so sure anymore. The 60s gave us the best of the Roger Corman x Vincent Price collaborations, the only two horrors Hitchcock ever made (unless you count Rebecca) which both stand amongst his best films period and Mario Bava's strongest output including the very first giallo. 1960 alone gave us four genre defining classics that still hold up today:
>Psycho
>The Birds
>Peeping Tom
>Repulsion
>Rosemary’s Baby
>Night of the Living Dead
>Kwaidan
>Onibaba
>Kuroneko
>Black Sunday
>Black Sabbath
>Planet of the Vampires

In weapons what was the point in making Archers son a bully and establishing him with military background and having an AR 15 above his house, operator posters in his kids bedroom, his object of possession being dogtags, and saying "soldiering on" when asked how he's doing?

I thought the bullying thing would have added something to Alex but it didn't? I think a lot of us can get school shootings vibes (absent parents, abusive aunt, teacher principal cop failing to do their jobs, 17 missing kids, child protective services mentioned a few times, corrupt police, sad memorial, disgruntled and grieving parents ) but Zach Cregger himself said the movie has nothing to do with that. It feels like he's inviting the discussion with such obvious imagery but he's shying away from actually saying something.
>>
>>214468883
>Why would the absent and violent father be the one to start his own investigation despite pushback?
The kid exists to give the military man a blind plan that consists of only forward. It's the same thing that happens whenever Liam Neeson has a kid- the kid doesn't exist to be a kid character, it exists because Neeson needs a vengeance plot
It adds a little to Alex in that it explains why he'd take the names, but mostly that kid exists so his dad can go harass people into his plan
>>
>>214468883
There are a lot of nitpicks like that one you could make. The subtext and themes did not come together into a coherent whole. For example, if the film is supposed to be about the impacts of alcoholism on a child, why portray Alex's family as loving, intact, and without substance abuse issues? The subtext of alcoholism is only present in the Justine and Paul characters in such a way that they do not impact the children in any way.

That's how the film ultimately failed. It's entertaining and watchable due to the photography, acting, and sound design, but it is a mystery story. It's supposed to come together.

I compare this to another recent film I've been looking forward to: Honey, Don't! While it contained a mystery, at its heart it is a slice of life film about this woman PI who just happened to have a murder mystery fall into her lap. It's more about how Honey navigates her relationships and her day to day life than it is about the mystery. As such, it did not need perfectly coherent themes and tight pacing to pull off its intended purpose.

Weapons is not like that. It opens with a heavy sense of dread over what happened and presents us with characters heavily invested in the mystery. It doesn't have a good excuse to meander throughout the middle and introduce a bunch of threads and themes which never get resolved.
>>
>>214469134
>subtext and themes did not come together into a coherent whole
It's about compulsive behaviour
>>
>>214469163
I read it more as about neglect, blame-shifting, and failure of communication, but again I didn't find it to come together.
>>
>>214469223
I think a lot of people went into it needing it to be about weapons or child abuse, and I think the actual story is more like a fairytale. All of the segments have compulsive self destruction except Alex who is being compelled by the witch slightly less directly witchily than she compels the rest of them, and being the only one whose compulsion isn't self chosen or magic, he's the only one to work out how to use compulsion for good
Everything in the plot isn't just about what happened to the kids, it's also about what all the adults are doing to themselves. The magic being specifically a kind of compulsive zombie hollow you out type of magic has comparisons with the junkie and the people who cannot let the investigation just be a police thing or cannot leave the kid unhugged
>>
>>214469382
pretty interesting take. the child narrator is a big thing that not a lot of people mention other than pointing out what she says doesn't make the best sense but maybe it does if it's fairytale. Wonder if Gladys's AOE powers made Gandy start teaching about parasites that day and making the principal turn on a documentary about parasites.
>>
>>214469468
If you want to go beyond the movie, Cregger said he wrote it while grieving Trevor Moore, who was pretty open about his OCD mixing with religious beliefs as a kid.
if you view Gladys as the OCD demon who moves in and causes horrible things to happen because you didn't listen to them or do the weird thing they wanted, and who you can see controlling everyone else it gets more like a child explaining their view of how bad things happen because of the witch, when the bad things might be real but also not magic. A lot of kid legends are like that, the real events being given improbable causes
>>
>>214469468
>>214469540
The child narrative is also really cute at points.
Like, why soup? It's what a seven year old would come up with
>>
>Tremors
>The Hills Have Eyes
What's some other desert horror kinos?
>>
>>214469382
That does make sense. I suppose especially after the opening sequence with so many characters mobbing Justine, I wanted some subtext where the parents were in some way complicit with what happened. They were looking for a person to blame when in fact Justine and Archer were the only two characters shown as motivated in any way to solve the mystery or to tend to the traumatized young boy. In Alex's sequence, we saw that he was the only one ever leaving the house and was doing all the grocery shopping. In that we saw neglect, and nobody was ever shown noticing this, but I didn't see that connect to anything.

I suppose I'm proving your point that I'm trying to read into it something that isn't there. You're right that each POV character displays some compulsive self-destruction, but in the case of Paul and James, their afflictions did not meaningfully or causally connect to the film's central conflict. They were just kind of there and ended up intersecting with the plot as a matter of coincidence. It felt like a bunch of empty space that could have been used to weave it together more coherently.

I think the James character could have been omitted entirely. I think it would have worked better if instead we had gotten a small team of burglars who noticed that Alex was the only one who ever left his house and ended up casing it. It would have shown us more that when people don't pay attention to their kids, it opens them up to exploitation.

Then I didn't buy at all that James was able to break into that house, steal their nintendo and spoons and just walk out. Gladys would have got his ass. I didn't need extended lore, but there was too much that didn't make good sense to me. Just didn't feel coherent. I'll have to watch it again.
>>
>>214469584
James also stole a little kid's ipad and was excited to see a DVD of willow lmao
>>
>>214469584
It's something easy enough for a child to prepare and feed to their 21 captives since Gladys was too lazy to do anything

I like James. He's a nonstop demon show, compulsively doing everything constantly. I love he's polite and apologetic every time too while also >>214469660 doing that shit.
One thing I really liked is the total divide between the professional and at home principal, where his body is the only thing that tells you he'd eat like a seven year old left alone, and his professional life has nothing that tells you he'd have someone who'd let that camp lady in and indulge her with the bowl
I really like it but I went in with a really different mindset
The parents in the background looking for someone to blame when they also didn't see Alex doing that in the weeks leading up is telling too. Like I don't think that dad thinks his kid is a bully but you could tell from the dad that his kid would be the kind of kid who would bully people.
