Does anybody else have trouble taking Cardassian warships very seriously in DS9? They always felt like a paper tiger.

Literally the first time we see them, the Phoenix is going on a one ship tear against them. It easily destroys a Cardassian warship despite having the Cardassians having the prefix code to lower it's shields.

When the Galor class attacked the Enterprise, it was firing all its weapons and barely putting a dent in the Galaxy class's shields. Picard calmly tried hailing them a few times while they fired in vain, then said "Number One, I believe we have been exemplary in our patience." Boom, the Enterprise fired one (maybe two, don't remember) shot and disabled their engines.

The Kingons invaded Cardassian space and nearly overwhelmed the entire thing, to the point that the government was evacuated from Cardassia prime. This happened near instantaneously. Yes it was a surprise attack, but it was also only about 1/3rd of their military, and they got in far enough that Cardassia prime was threatened and their military didn't think they could defend it.
>>
>>214535574
Cardassia is MEANT to come across as a blustering second rate power that has been outpaced by the Federation.
>>
>>214535574
>the Phoenix is going on a one ship tear against them. It easily destroys a Cardassian warship despite having the Cardassians having the prefix code to lower it's shields.
TBF, the nebula class is basically a Galaxy with the extraneous science shit stripped out (so starfleet's top of the line ship), vs a bunch of what are essentially space t-34s and cargo ships
>>
>>214535470
sure there are people who can just make high quality prosthetics but Michael Westmore actually had to come up with original ideas week after week and within the limitations of TV budget and production. and you can see now with nutrek how if you change his designs even slightly it looks fucked up and retarded like with their versions of Klingons and Ferengi. anyway I suggest the TV show Face/Off if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Cardassians seemed to start out weak and then they scaled them up in power levels. Some of the stuff said they stole technology from rival powers like the Feds and even Romulans which is why the Cardassians have access to things like plasma torpedoes. Still it is indeed inconsistent with what was shown earlier.

Cardassia by the way is only 5 light years away from Bajor, that's basically next door in terms of distance so if the Cardassians were able to stop the Klingon advance then that's pretty damn good going when their homeworld is practically the frontline in any war.

I'm really confused by the firing pattern. The first two beams are fired with slightly upward trajectory, the 3rd beam is fired with a downward trajectory, and then the 4th beam is is either horizonal or very slightly upward and hits the lowest ship destroying it.

Who the hell were they firing that 3rd beam at?

In this scene they were given the order to fire at will, the first two miss, the second two both hit and destroy the same ship, around the bottom then the center of their shields. If they redirected their shieds to where the first shot hit, the second shot straight into their center line with weakened shielding would have been accidentally catastrophic. Whoever fired the first shot is definitely getting assigned extra firing drills on the holodeck, though.

Dukat really was a good and just leader. It was the filthy Bajorans and their senseless hate all along that was always the problem:
https://youtu.be/R2HY50xw3WU?t=28

Finding out the truth in this episode was the most mindblowing twist in DS9, and made the destruction of Cardassia Prime and victory of the Federation and Bajor such a tragic ending to series.

How could Sisko not see that he how unjustly maligned Dukat had been, and why didn't he swtich sides and convince the Federation to side with Cardassia. Never made any sense to me if they're supposed to be the good guys.

the truth that blew my mind in this episode is finding out that Dukat actually subconsciously knows how incredibly insecure and delusional he is and has avatars of the people whose opinions he values most telling him so in the back of his mind all the time. it actually sane washed him a little bit. a true crazy narcissist wouldn't acknowledge let alone be able to identify their own faults.
>>
>>214537116
Sarcasm aside, I can't help but think dukat makes a decent argument in the first three minutes. The occupation was well underway and wasn't going well, and if it wasn't him, the central command would just send in someone worse. Maybe he is coping, but at this point he has no reason to pretend. Sisko just keeps baiting him and baiting him over and over until he snaps.

My grandpa is a Cardassian occupation denier. I have no idea why. We live on Earth, have no connection to Bajor, and he isn't really a conspiracy kind of guy in general. He has never been to Bajor or met a Bajoran yet he has pages of documents 'proving the hoax', such as a full script for the movie The Occupation of Bajor with a bunch of random letters from the words highlighted showing 'the secret messages' from the director. He says that Gul Dukat wasn't really in charge and that 'every picture of Bajoran resistance is clearly staged' and has huge printouts of grainy photos of Cardassia to prove it. Not sure what he has against Bajor, but if you bring it up to him he calls you a 'Bajoran liar.'

It's mostly just the the Maquis had no follow-through and was a failed plot on two different shows because they didn't write enough and no one gave a shit. No one ever actually cared if the Federation stepped on a few little people for the greater good so the only choice was to write a bunch of evil federation plot and the show was still too Roddenberry for that.
>>
>>214535473
I think DS9 avoided that fate. Everyone stays slim. Especially Kira and Dax.

But Voyager had the Trek Gain problem too. The actors for Tom Paris and Harry Kim put on weight in the later seasons. The producers even had to step in tell them to drop weight.

In an interview, the actors said they both raided the catering food table for food between takes. They said Star Trek had the best catering tables on the entire Paramount lot and they couldn't help themselves.

Enterprise...I think they all stayed slim. But Trip and Malcom's actors got really big after the show ended. If you watch their Trek Podcasts on YouTube, they are big fellas now.
>>
>>214535935
>Bro they only stopped them because The Dominion intervened.
No rewatch DS9 and those earlier pre-dominion war episodes. The Cardassians were able to (barely) stop the Klingons from reaching Cardassia Prime. But the Klingons took a huge chunk of Cardassian Space and the outer Colonies.

Dukat stole a Klingon warbird that had all the Klingon communication codes and Battle plans. He tried to rally the Cardassian Council and military to launch a counterattack and push the Klingons out. But the Council and Military were so demoralized that they said no. They wanted to negotiate a peace treaty with the Klingons and give up territory.

Dukat got super pissed and angry at his people being cowards. So he secretly went to the Dominion to negotiate the Cadarssian Empire joining the Dominion in exchange for Dominion military assistance.
