In the words of Saint Berman, "We've hired a pretty girl and I want to keep her that way." The entire Bajoran aesthetic is designed around Michelle Forbes, and is peak Star Trek alien design. Just something a little different like blue skin or pointy ears, no crazy cg stuff, because then you connect more with the character than if they were something abstract and unapproachable.
The show's entire philosophy of meeting aliens and growing through those relationships is summed up in her face.

>>
>>214679831
He manages to be stoic without being boring. Bad writers can make stoic characters really flat, but even though Picard is resistant and composed he is still very sincere and sentimental.

He is also the best actor out of the captains and that helps a lot.
>>
>>214680505
I meant resilient instead of resistant. Is he resistant? To what?
>>
>>214680505
The trouble with Picard is that he's simply unoriginal. He's a 1:1 copy of Horatio Hornblower, to the point when Roddenberry was describing the character to Stewart, he had all of the Hornblower books sent to him with the note saying "Picard is in here."

Kirk > Picard but I know you're a TOS hating pleb so it's not even worth explaining to you why.
>>
>>214679057
Does Sisko's look fast-paced, high-stress, and zero prestige? It's literally a mom & pop diner, minus the mom. It's a utopian Denny's.

I don't hate TOS I just dont get it. I would probably like it more than I do now if it wasn't hyped up as incredible sci-fi and instead I just watched it for the camp aspect like Adam West Batman or Farscape.
>>
if you dont "get" TOS you dont belong here
>>
>>214680700
Star Trek has never been about hard sci-fi as much as it has been about human drama. Sci-fi is just a vehicle that lets writers tell stories they want to tell with more exotic imagery that is in allegorical form, so that it's easier to swallow commentary on complicated social issues.

S3 is the pure camp season and it's the worst for a reason. TOS is at its best when it's serious.

You've created a weird chicken/egg situation in your own head about TOS and I don't really get it.

How the hell do you think you get into characters in the first place, BF? By watching the character drama and getting into the stories. The stories make you care about the characters. You didn't give a shit about Picard until you watched episodes that made you care about him. Try paying attention for fuck's sake and just watch a few good episodes without all of this bullshit in your head.

Also; I like how he says that the characters are one dimensional WITHOUT WATCHING THE FUCKING SHOW.
>>
>>214679103
I've been wondering the same thing for a long time. Without money, the only way to apportion resources that can't be replicated, e.g. land and the amount of housing one gets to occupy on land, is "social credit", which means people have to please the Federation government, making it less of a utopia and more of a tyranny. I know "Roddenberry's Box" forces the writers to assume utopian space Marxism, but there are many unrealistic and unexplained aspects. It seems one has to put one's brain on ice & accept Star Trek is a space fantasy.

Wow going from the last episode of season 2 of Picard to the first episode of season 3 just literally gave me whiplash. There's a star base, a starship, people in trek uniforms, Trek music, people acting like Starfleet officers, what the fuck. This whiplash is going to literally give me brain damage. The only thing it needed was giving Seven her updo hairstyle back. The main cast isn't acting right but now I understand why some people chose to forgive that. This is brain aneurysm inducing levels of whiplash.

I wish Paramount would let someone make a retro Star Trek movie or TV show with the aesthetics of the OG like they did with that Star Trek Enterprise two-part episode In a Mirror, Darkly where, through some time anomaly bullshit, the worthless crew of zero-charisma non-entities of that space trash encounter a ship from the future OG show.

What I love is that this takes place in the ESREVINU RORRIM KRAD, so everyone's war mongering sociopaths while they did a new version of the title sequence showing the development of that universe....

Anywho, one of the things I hate about modern Trek is how everything now looks too slick and polished with the bridge of the Kelvin Enterprise looking like an Apple store, that sell electronic devices, not fruit....
>>
>>214682637

And don't get me started on how fucking ugly everything was in Star Trek Discovery and WHY THE FUCK IS THE BRIDGE SOO FUCKING BIG?!?

Whatever, I wish that for 2021 they had made one more Star Trek movie where they could have had the Kelvin cast fighting a Dark Mirror Universe of themselves, possibly escalating into a temporal war with various factions and the twist that the Klingons/Romulans or the DMU side are good guys that side with the Kelvin characters and come to their aid while their counterparts side with the DMU characters and launch an all out attack.

But the real twist is that Borg of the future Kelvin Timeline (KT) have been behind all of it, as they have more or less been defeated and resort to more time travel fuckery (like they did in First Contact) opening a temporal riff with the intent of having the KT and DMU factions destroy each other only for at the last minute have the DMU Borg show up, let everyone know that the KTBorg were behind all of it, causing everyone on both sides to join together and collectively destroy them!

Once the KTBorg are finished, the DMUBorg keeps the portal open with the intent of returning before closing it. They explain that this means the DMU factions will be stranded in the KT if they don't return and will be easily defeated, so they all go back but warning that the KTBorg will be coming and give them the technology to defend against and destroy them, should they show up.
>>
>>214682661
They were still practicing social distancing after 400 years because "I like science"
>>
>>214682726

So how do you make the DMU Borg work?

You have it that the people who are assimilated did soo willingly because they saw the Borg as their only salvation against hostile empires across the galaxy, while still being able to retain their individuality as their overall goal is not to dominate and assimilate but to explore and gather anyone who wants to join! They would also be able to leave the collective any time they wish with every decision made based on a majority vote of what would be the most logical course of action in every situation, unless it pertains directly to an individual and what they want for themselves which the collective have no dominion over.

Only downside of joining is that you have to be outfitted and implanted with Borg technology in order to function within the collective, and is somewhat uncomfortable, especially the tubes they stick into your urethra and up your ass, butt it's a small price to pay with the bonus that, should you leave the collective, you can have all of that removed and your body restored 100% to its original state while it should be noted that 100% of the time that happens, males always ask to keep the Positronic Borg Fleshlight (TM) that was attached to their genitals as a "souvenir"......

Gene Roddenberry was influenced by the Hornblower character while creating the Star Trek characters James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard. Nicholas Meyer, director of some of the Star Trek films, frequently cites Horatio Hornblower as one of his primary influences.

All the open space was probably so the camera crew could have enough room for stupid circular pans and zooms and other constant shaking movement nonsense that the new shows have to do to make people talking to each other look more exciting for the low attention span fidgety audience.

ENT sucks because Berman's talent with Star Trek was acting as the censor who had the final say and veto of things. In ENT, he was one of the main creative writing forces of the show and he was unable to exercise the same editorial discretion with his own work that he could with others.

Brannon Braga took advantage of this, became his writing partner, and together they pushed Star Trek off of a cliff for a few years.

After watching TOS again for the first time in years I can safely conclude that Kirk is the best.
He embodies every aspect of a good Captain. He can be more Picard than Picard and more Sisko than Sisko. Beyond that the performance of Shatner is magnetic. You can't look away.
TNG might have the most comfortable ship but you would want to serve under no man but Kirk. Well I wouldn't
