It’s a fun breather episode you could only get away with in the first season. Even if the script was clearly TNG leftover scraps. I bet the original script had the aliens make first contact on the Enterprise. Quark’s part would have gone to Picard. The group trapped in the game would have been Riker, Worf, Data/Wesley, and Beverly.

It’s season 1, it establishes the characters and furthers their development. I watched it a week or two ago and off the top of my head:
>Odo asserts his authority as head of station security over the federation guy they just kinda dump on him and who eventually just disappears
>Julian is established as smart but not “worldly”
>Dax is established as smart and “worldly” (attempted)
>reinforcement of Ben as a caring father and a hothead (different scenes)
>reinforcement of Kira being a person of good character in the game
>Quark established as a cheating scumbag with a heart of latinum who somehow eventually just skates over the whole thing without reprisal
And so on and so forth. It’s ok

Remember that time that John Locke trashed Captain Kirk because he got his men killed, then he got Boone killed. Symmetry or something. Lost is so fucking good nobody better say nothing bad about Lost. Wookie prisoner maneuver was great too. Didn't even mind seeing Mac on Lost getting head butted by Sawyer. I can't think of many other actors who were on both shows though. I knew Terry OQuinn for confusingly playing multiple roles on X-Files before I'd seen Lost

>>
>>214727581
Same anon: clarification: I grew up watching X-Files reruns out of order on TNT before I'd seen it at all in order. Terry OQuinn played a metallic supersoldier guy who got sucked into a rock as well as playing some kind of FBI guy before that. Also if we crossover to Millennium, he played another character in the same universe, that guy from the Millennium Group. He's also super versatile. Loved his Man in Black in the later seasons of Lost. Super intense.

Perhaps, but Lost was helmed pretty much by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. I'm convinced Carlton Cuse was the reason that Lost managed to remain satisfying. I rewatched it a few years ago and it was actually better than I remembered. We know Damon Lindelof can go off the rails, so the secret ingredient must be Carlton Cuse. I offer as secondary evidence of this: Carlton Cuse was show runner on The Strain and that show managed to stay satisfying and dramatic and on-the-rails all the way through. Creepily predictive of Covid as well. JJ Abrams really didn't have a lot to do with day to day Lost. One of the only podcasts I ever listened to was the weekly Cuse/Lindelof podcast, and Carlton Cuse clearly had a clear confidence that he wasn't just stringing people along. Which on rewatch, they definitely were not stringing people along. The last 3 seasons are relentlessly dramatic. Usually I hate rewatching things, but Lost is the exception. This is all I have to say on the subject.

>tl;dr Lost rules, also watch The Strain if you never have. It's like a horror mystery action show. Worth it for the Ratcatcher character alone. Lots of memorable characters really. Seriously: The Strain. And don't believe the Haters, Lost rules.

It's interesting to note that according to official Star Trek canon, James T. Kirk is the ancestor of one Charles James Kirk, a free speech activist who was assassinated in the early 21st century. James T. Kirk was named in his honor. I never realized that before but apparently that's official.

That clears a lot up, actually. It explains why Captain Kirk took such an interest in helping Charlie X, who was a very lost young man. Maybe he felt that by trying to help guide this young confused boy, he would be honoring his ancestor who was known for helping lost young men throughout the world.

Wow so season 3 Picard Beverley Crusher said nobody has seen or heard from the Borg in 10 years. Picard didn't flinch. Pretty funny desu that they just decided to pretend season 2 didn't even happen. I guess Rios never got to live happily ever after with latina doctor kek. Juradi never existed either apparently or something. Wow. So I would say to any other viewers that since season 3 decided season 2 isn't canon future viewers can totally skip seasons 1 and 2. Exactly! You get it.
Charlie X was a little tyrant, just like the liberals who Charlie Kirk tried to bring to reason.

The Dyson Sphere introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Relics" was revisited in the novel Dyson Sphere, published in April 1999. In this story, the USS Enterprise returns to the sphere for a planned six-month exploration. However, their mission is abruptly interrupted when an unknown force launches a neutron star on a collision course with the sphere, threatening its destruction. The novel delves into the mysteries of the sphere's origin and its implications for the Federation.

>>214733793
Technically it would've been both a power collector and living space. But in a society that advanced they would never need to rely on solar power.
>>
Reminder that Freeman Dyson didn't describe the Dyson Sphere as a solid shell but rather just a bunch of artificial objects in orbit around a star to harvest its energy. Basically just a bunch of orbital colonies.

>>
>>214733821
>If you've got enough time on your hands to make a Dyson sphere, why not just to say you did or could?
You'd need Kardashev I to make a Dyson Sphere, but if you had Kardashev I, you should use it to work toward Kardashev II
>>
>>214733821
Because it's not cool. It's dumb
>>
You couldn't walk on the inner surface of a Dyson Sphere. The gravity you feel inside an object is due only to the matter closer to the centre of mass than you are - in this case the star. The attraction of the external shell exactly cancels itself out. This is a basic result in gravitational mechanics, a consequence of Euler's Divergence Theorem.
>>
>>214733859
t. non-dyson sphere haver
>>
>>214733837
Yes true. It was meant to be continuous habitable living space absorbing power from the star
>>
>>214733853
Maybe it's the science fair project of a Kardeshev II child.
>>
>>214733863
>The gravity you feel inside an object is due only to the matter closer to the centre of mass than you are - in this case the star.
Inverse square rule matters. A substantialy smaller amount of mass that is closer (e.g., under your feet) can anchor you while the larger, but farther away mass (star) pulls in the other direction. Dyson Spheres are big. The star is far from you.
>>
We're way off on a tangent. The Dyson Sphere in TNG DOES exist and could easily support an almost limitless amount of people. The surface area is stupidly massive. Imagine that the humongous distance from the Earth to the sun was just a single radius. Then calculate the surface area of the sphere. Then compare that to the surface area of an average M-Class planet. It's like finding an entirely new Quadrants worth of livable space.

The fact that they basically shrug it off is proof that they're all essentially just billionaires jaunting around for fun.
>>
>>214733863
If the federation has artificial gravity, then Dyson Sphere builders had it 100,000 years before they built a Dyson Sphere.
>>
>>214733904
>A substantialy smaller amount of mass that is closer (e.g., under your feet) can anchor you while the larger, but farther away mass (star) pulls in the other direction.
Doesn't work that way. Inverse square is true, but the greater amount of mass far from you exactly cancels the mass close to you. The gravity at all points inside a hollow shell is exactly zero. The star will be the only attractive location
>>
>>214733932
Artificial gravity. It was an engineered structure.
>>
>>214733907
I think at the end of the episode they said they were sending an entire science-specced flotilla to start work on it. The flagship isn't designed or sent out to long term research missions, it's role falls squarely into diplomacy and show of force.
>>
>>214733959
What is a flotilla?
>>
the only way making a Dyson sphere wouldn't be a totally retarded endeavor is if you were someone friends with a Q and he blinked it into existence for you
>>
>>214734018
It's just a way to show off to fellow space travelling billionaires. It's like building your own island. Sure that might be a retarded use of resources, but you're just flexing and showing that you were the GOAT society. People still marvel at the pyramids and it took us thousands of years to build anything taller. The pyramids were a retarded use of resources but they still built them. Retarded and genius sometimes coexist.
>>
Anyway I am moving on from the Dyson Sphere question. I think they're cool as fuck and nobody changed my mind on that.
