this is my analysis of Noroi the curse (2005):

it definitely seems to be the case that 1990-2010 japan was nervous about the encroaching american culture via civil expansion, technology, and the internet. This one focuses on civil expansion. maps, buildings, infrastructure, and the like are the invasive forces. one character saying 'are pigeons a sign of immanent death?' overall its good stuff. is the new development going to bring with it the destruction of our longstanding culture. Japan has been reckoning with its reclusive culture for nearly a century at this point. modernizing is just one of many sources of fear that the old way of doing things is going to be eroded.

Does mockumentary count at found footage? at times this felt like a video essay compilation of all the 'evidence' i found the variety show stuff to be fairly distracting but if you watch a lot of variety tv then it probably quite fits in.

As for horror, it manages its tone decently well but there are obvious pacing issues, and for that it loses its steam at a few points throughout. it feels like a mystery that we arent allowed to put together because theres a scholar to exposit the supernatural cause of it all. the demons name is 'a tool that brings destruction.' the pigeon therefore being the modern Prometheus i guess.

It has to make me feel more than "a jumpscare is going to happen" kind of anxiety. I have to feel that unease, but also unease at the concept of the scene.
I don't consider jumpscares by themselves under the label "scary", but normoids understandably would.

I just didn't like the Mary Sue nature of the villain. Sure he can be scary or hard to stop, but things like the ritual failing or everything working out flawlessly according to his plans was over the top and retarded. Medium had the same problem. Resistance should have an effect but ultimately fail if you want to go that route, instead of having zero effect and being pointless from the start. These are not the same thing. It's a world of difference.

Interesting. I'd have to watch it again, but I don't disagree about the general feel.
People forget that up until the early 80s, Japan had had a miraculous economic recovery guided by technology. Even so far as to think that Japan would be the next world economic leader and overtake the US.
When that collapsed because of wonky investments I won't go into, the stagnation that resulted from it must have been a psychological shock as well as an economic one.
Have you seen Pulse / Kairo? That's a film that deals more explicitly with what you're talking about, particularly internet as an infrastructure.

consider the demon as not a literal demon but as metaphor for the development of a city. you can protest a construction project all you want but once the company gets to the site its gonna be built whether you like it or not. its not mary sue as much as it just has millions of dollars put into it.

>>215052386
Pulse definitely more directly interacts with technology and its effect on japanese culture, i agree. Noroi is much more about tangible changes, urbanization and all that, while pulse is pretty clearly about the dangers of simply allowing a western invention into your life. I would also identify Ring as being more technologically focused, but it is also focused on societal pressure to marry up and have babies being met with a culture that is not interested in parenthood. the temporal closeness of all of these movies leads to what i was saying, a general feel for this anxiety. maybe its my american brain thats seeing the encroaching american culture, especially because so many technologically innovative companies are japanese, but i would not be surprised if there was a nip horror about a demon who knows where you are and brings about bad luck (GPS)

V/H/S/Halloween is potentially the least entertaining in the series.
Diet Phantasma, the wraparound, was... moving images paired with sound.
Coochie Coochie Coo was mid. I'm kinda over "where did the door go!? as a thing. Characters were annoying as fuck.
Ut Supra Sic Infra. Whatever.
Fun Size is the "best" of the bunch. Faint praise, but it was silly in a charming kind of way.
Kidprint was average, but kinda ballsy. What was the director saying here?
Home Haunt, the kid was a giant cockhead, and it was also mid.

For anyone who doesn't care about spoilers the game is none of these things.
Firstly it is set in the 60s in rural Japan, secondly the protagonist has an abusive father and buckbroken mother, thirdly she is being sold off into an arrange marriage to clear off her families debt.
At multiple intervals during the game it spells out that the main character doesn't hate being a woman, actually wants to get get married but is too scared to allow herself to be vulnerable because of her upbringing.
I can't stress enough how the game very explicitly goes out of its way to literally say to the player "this character is this way because of their upbringing they're not actually against being a woman or marriage or motherhood" and somehow retards don't get that.
It is very tiresome that years of genuine feminist slop garbage has emboldened horeshoe niggers. If anyone genuinely thinks what the picture expresses they are a subhuman browngroid.

Feminist? Yes.
Woke? I'd go as far to say it is anti-woke. The story is literally about a girl learning to overcome her childhood trauma and internalized auto-misogyny (and by extension misandry) so that she can fall accept her love for her childhood friend.

Hell no. Start with the first. The first two are the best. The decline is steep. The newest one is probably the worst yet.
Outside of the first two I don't think I'd watch them alone. Talking about each segment is 90% of the experience to be honest.

>>
>>215053703
I somewhat agree however I don't think there is a single VHS where this actually skews the overall rating.
The good ones have some stinkers but they feel like part of the experience. The bad ones have some standouts but they're not enough to elevate the whole thing.
You could stitch together a good 2 hour and 30 minute experience by putting together just the great and good shorts.
>>215053759
"No Wake" and "Dreamkill" keep 85 from the bottom spot. Though it is definitely low down there.
Halloween is simply bad from start to finish, with the first and last segments being the best though middling. The frame narrative is also pretty shit.

"Coochie Coochie Coo" was earnest and attempted to be creative. It was very generic and kind of bland but it was passable. There was an attempt made.
"Haunt" was also generic but it was at least fun. Also quite well made.
"Ut supra sic infra" was generic and boring with nothing going for it other than not being insulting. "Fun Size" was classic quirk chungus basedlennial masturbatory slop. "Print" had a decently promising set up but the pay off was infuriatingly bad.

>Not sure what the underlying theme of the zombie training is but I guess that'll be in interviews somewhere.
The whole movie is a metaphor for the end of racial segregation in the United States. Rhodes represents the moderate-turned-extreme American conservatives, having watched the situation in their country get worse and worse and finally responding with an absolute no-more-nonsense response.
Dr. Frankenstein represents the far-left progressives, trying to deal with the situation by superficially sticking up for the zombies and attempting to integrate them into society, with plenty of casualties occurring in the process, and the value of the endeavor being unclear to everyone else, as well as being a point of further conflict, and ultimately revealed to be nothing more than a narcissistic power trip.
Sarah represents the moderate left, siding against Rhodes but without firm ground to stand on, and still skeptical of Frankenstein's extreme views, until she inadvertently helps destroy the only solution to the zombie problem and therefore finds herself trapped in an utterly unfixable world and succumbs to nihilism, alongside an intelligent black and an irish drunk who knew the whole time that they had no other option

Barbarian (2022)
alright bros, it wasnt as bad as you guys were making it out to be. the first act is a terrifying use of the instinctual fear of the dark. but lets crack on with the analysis:
mommy issues and rape accusations. This movie is obviously levying an attack on male privilege, and it has one, maybe two, interesting things to say. First, when Tess lays out what would have happened had she gotten to the airbnb first and kieth had ridden up, and she comes off as sexist in her own way. Second, la creatura in the film 'the mother' is the danger, and the old patriarch is weak to the point of uselessness. theres an indication here that generational trauma and internalized misogyny/misandry is the real violent nature. this is seen in the police as well, not believing the woman, being machismo and useless, and so on. Thats too surface level, and probably why anons here hate it

Theres this overarching sense these days about a sexual dynamic among the traditional genders, men have the constant threat of violence while women enjoy the cunning threat of social exile. The question of these threats becomes which version of power is more powerful? and the roles are almost reversed in this movie to illustrate, AJ's character is thrown into the situation because of his rape culture attitude about sex, yet once in the upside down structure of the tunnels below he is the one who cannot adapt and is thus sexually violated by means of the maternal desires of 'the mother' and i dont think the oedipal imagery here is lost, though its definitely distorted. the patriarchs suicide, the matriarchs forcing. these 'traditional' roles dont offer a sense of comfort, and thats exactly what i think is going on under the surface.

This movie wouldnt be possible if parental relationships werent seen as a sort of sacrifice in order to achieve a reduction of rape culture. and i think thats visible in that tess, the main character, doesnt essentially masculinize by the end of the flick

The segments blend seamlessly into the overarching story and the whole thing is entertaining throughout and perfectly suited to the Halloween season

after playing with it a little bit i dont think you can really do it in your head. it is interesting its missing (x+8) theres the hint i guess. check it out you can pair up (x+5) and (x+11) which gives you x2+16x+55, and you can do the same to get x2+16x+60 and x2+16x+63. if you set x2+16x=u then you can see another nice little property. v neat.

slop. Doesn't even have nudity and most of the segments weren't even that good like most anthologies. Also your shilling sounds artificial and corporate.

It's plenty good enough for casual halloween watching
I picture myself defiling anna paquin in her little red riding hood costume
I'm a film fan

I don't watch horror movies outside of this month, so all of the "meh, saw it when it came out" is saved for now. Also, I am going out of my way to watch stuff I wouldn't have otherwise, kinda widening my horizons.
I expected the Conjuring-verse (ugh) to be worse than it is, kinda think they're cozy in their own right, though it's grating hearing kids and women screaming nonstop.

It's terrible. The only late Fulci worth a damn is Cat in the Brain.

What about the 4 back-to-back fulci house of whatever they're called. Those were right around 1990ish and made-for-TV.

None that I recall. There's like 3 or 4 stylish sex scenes though. And a bit of tit, including Alyssa but it's brief and side view and murky.

Just finished. Bitches be bickering.
Annoying, overwritten slasher with pitiful gore and non stop dialogue. Figured out who the killer was before the murders even started. Has a cool twist ending but not even close enough to save this dumb shit, and no nudity either.

still need to watch this
also wait
wasn't adam chaplin 2 supposed to be out last week or something
oh, november
>>

I think it can be ordered online now but as I don't have a blu ray player, I'm not gonna buy one just for it.
Not sure if it will come to VOD.

please recommend a movie that's genuinely scary. I have not been scared during a horror movie for more than 2 decades.
gore does not scare me, so you have to try hard. I miss the feeling of getting scared while watching a movie.

I'm always hyper aware of what the filmmakers are doing... or trying to do
That's the curse of being an experienced film watcher
The only thing that even comes close to getting me is the sound score, since that's primal

The problem is people find all different kinds of shit scary. A bunch say Hereditary was scary and I hated it.
I think The Blair Witch Project was scary and some people think it's garbage. That's my rec anyway. Either that, or Kairo/Pulse.
>>
>>215055329
are you willing to actually try to feel the vibe of a movie? like really try to get into it? if so, skinamarink.

just finished Ravenous.

I wasn't a fan of this the first time I saw it but appreciated it more the next time. I think knowing that it's... unique is kind of required up front.
