Just finished. Hard to categorize as horror, but pretty compelling. Girl sees her prostitute mother get killed by a john, grows up and ends up in a loveless marriage, decides to moonlight as a hooker for the thrill of it, but then starts killing her clients. Gets weirder from there until a disappointing ending. Honestly pretty damn good. From the director of The Boogeyman and starring his wife, who's gorgeous and goes full frontal.

ROTLD was kino.
It's actually a rare film where the plot slides forward easily without main characters. Seems like a theme is the youth and the older generation, but it's not about a clash, more about living in the same world, having a handover and I guess having to deal with the shit older generations have been stalling on.
The zombies were actually creepy at times because of the sentient ambush element.

Watched Longlegs. Very frustrating film. Lots of things I like about it but so many things I hate about it that it kind of averages out to a very middling movie with some pops. Terrible third act, inexplicable character behaviors, often nauseating cinematography. Nic Cage is always fun. It Follows girl is pretty good. Plot kept me engaged at least. Some really cool visual stuff. Turn the fucking brightness up sometimes.

I stumbled onto this back in the vhs days, mid 90s, just renting every damn thing they had in the horror section and was floored by it. FNAF movie being so tame is strange since it's pg13 anyway and the games are quite a lot darker. Also the script, cinematography and editing were all awful and looked like something a youtuber would have made 10 years ago.

I'm fine with tame kids horror but the execution was so bad. The dialogue is so bad and the ghost kids scenes is among the worst thing I've ever seen in a movie. There's been plenty of PG horror that did dark themes before, there's no excuse for anything to suck as bad as FNAF did.

I disagree but I think Bordello is probably the better tales from the crypt meme production. Ritual feels like a random B movie they bought off the shelf and bookended with the absolute worst cryptkeeper bit ever. Ritual came from nothing but had ambitions. Bordello had zero ambition and zero impact despite big enough budget and studio behind it.

Bordello is a solid vampire movie, it's gory and trashy and sexy, and when compared to like John Carpenter's Vampires for example since they both star wildly miscast leading men, it's not fucking boring

I count it as one but you could argue it, TCM, Tourist Trap, Evil Dead Trap aren't really. I almost included People Under the Stairs too but that doesn't include an iconic killer costume (unless you count the gimp suit) so it seemed just 1 step too far.
>>215119725
Thanks, I'd recommend any of them. Curtains and Home For The Holidays are probably the most obscure but they're definitely worth checking out. Curtains is a pretty interesting Canadian slasher from the early 80s that keeps up a spooky vibe. Home for the Holidays is a TV movie from 73 that's kind of a proto-slasher

I head Funny Games is a quasi meta deconstruction of horror movie genre like Scream was, is it really like that?
>>
>>215119950
>meta deconstruction of horror movie genre
indeed
>like Scream
absolutely not. id rather call it an anti-exploitation home invasion horror film, and its one that seeks to make you uncomfortable not as a viewer, not as a self insert, but as an audience member. its quite unpleasant because it doesnt have the trappings of horror, its just horrifying. its very low on the fear, gore, jumpscare, and sexy indices, but has its own sense of gripping. Having seen the german and not the english version, im gonna go out on a limb and say go with the version thats closer to your native tongue, theres some vocal register stuff going on and its harder to catch in a foreign language than in a native tongue. try not to look anything up because the act one twist is an important aspect of the tension of the film. both the english and the german are directed by the same person and afaik its a shot for shot remake but with english speaking actors.
>>

Blumhouse Productions movies in general are shit, they're really fucking tame at least lately, barely any blood and obviously no T&A, they feel too samey, they had a interview a couple of days ago with one of the guys in charge of the company and they said they always dreamed of getting the rights for Freddy and Jason to make movies for these franchises, but I can't for the life of me see them ever doing any of those any justice, the guy also claimed that they almost got the rights for Texas Chainsaw Massacre but lost the bidding wars to another studio

With how much money the terry fire movies made and how iconic art became one would think blumhouse would take notes and try to copy that.

I'm not sure just copying it would work. I mean there were films like Hatchet for years and nobody cared.
But I guess yeah you could make the most violent film ever made for shock value and just see how it flies. But the Blumhouse PR department would probably say it's a bad idea for the brand.

Ghostwatch (1992) – A powerful Worth a Watch for the sheer brazenness of it. A mockumentary, recorded weeks earlier, it was presented as a live broadcast in which *real* BBC presenters explored allegations of poltergeist activity in Greater London, in what Americans would call a townhouse (but what I assume was a kind of posh, public housing, since there is reference to a transfer application). A strange *presence* has been bothering a divorcee and her two daughters, doing all the classic things: breaking objects, manifesting inhuman voices, scratching and groping the more pubescent, *gropable* daughter. This is a lot more exciting than it sounds on paper. The presenters -- and even the kids -- turn into consummate actors and completely sell the thing. Some of the more credulous Brits even thought it was all real . . . and some apparently STILL think it! (Though after the theatrics crank up at the end, it would take a real dunderhead.) Put this alongside Orson Welles War of the Worlds broadcast as another piece of unforgettable hoax media! (But a fun hoax, unlike Saddam’s WMDs and the like.)

As much as you guys joke about the huehues, I'm surprised you don't love Coffin Joe. the unrepentant chud superman. You should watch the whole trilogy, but shockingly the third, very late movie is the apex of it.

This is how dedicated the actor/director was to his character: He grew his nails out to play him in the 1960s movie . . . and let 'em grow all the way until he died in 2020!

Oh no, you're mistaken. He had cameos and host status in a few nominal anthology films, like The Strange World of Coffin Joe, but that's *not* mainline, and *not* a very good movie.

The ACTUAL Coffin Joe trilogy
At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1964)
This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse (1967)
Embodiment of Evil (2008)

Strange World is almost unwatchable, but these others are certainly not.

Yeah, they could've had a solid street-wise slut & intrepid but vanilla reporter dynamic for the whole movie, and it would've been a better story that way, even if she dies and becomes a cenobite by the end.

3 and Deader are the most disappointing ones for me, those could've been much better movies if they'd been able resist spamming Pinhead over and over in the second half.
People always say Inferno is okay, but that's just a bad Se7en ripoff ultimately, and it would still be that even if they'd struck a better balance between having an actual story centered more around the box than just Pinhead.

Esther did nothing wrong in Orphan. Everyone was unnecessarily aggro towards her for no reason. The mom treated her like a psycho killer from the start. Sure, she turned out to actually be one, but the mom had no reason to think that she was actually a 30 year old midge serial killer, so she just comes across as a woman bullying a small child, a child who finally flips out. Haunter (2013) – In this Excellent dark fantasy, we see the expansive and *expressive* heart-shaped face of Abigail Breslin portraying a ghostly teen caught in a rut. Her old home from 1984 is simulated to the finest detail, but it’s trapped in a misty abyss from which there is no escape; her little Atari-playing brother and parents are there, but only SHE knows she’s dead, yet she is forced to live the same day, the last day of her fifteenth year, over and over again. Fatalistic and sarcastic, she’s almost given up entirely . . . until her spectral home is seemingly haunted IN TURN, and she finds connections to the past and future -- making this a spook story of almost *epic* scope!

Don’t let the cheesy CGI intro (which reminds me of a hidden object game) turn you off from this, because everything else, including script and acting, is absolutely PRIMO. Putting the icing on the cake is the marvelous *completeness* of the story. Of course we don’t know everything about *everything*, but every aspect of ANY importance is explored in 90 minutes, and in a *natural* way that left me perfectly satisfied. (This is a film of dopplegangers! The wicked ghost (the guy from Pontypool) is a quarter-turn away from Willem Dafoe, and the dad could easily be the younger brother of Christopher Walken! Whatever their similarities, their acting is all THEIRS, and they shine at it. One of the most uncomfortable moments for me, surprisingly, was when Lisa’s Walken-adjacent dad goes into a very realistic fit of anger, screaming and slamming things.)

their best bet is getting screened at festivals and most have rules that prevent you from just uploading it online plus you may not have music copyrights to just upload to Youtube let alone shit compression and devaluing your work amid the slop ocean.

I don't know, my main complaint is that they didn't go far enough with the dentist theme. They could have done so many more sick and gory kills with dentistry equipment.

Would have been so much better with more gore. Especially the scene where the werewolf is killing all the hunters.
