I just watched this because a coworker recommended it and it SUCKED. I’m not a WW2 buff or anything but the whole thing was just cliche and insubstantial and super thin on the ground. Some of the special effects were neat but there’s no stakes and no real tension, despite the bad guys being literal superhumans they just throw people into walls rather than actually killing them.

Also the whole mission was for them to knock the radio tower down before 0600 so that D-day could take place with air support and by the time they actually blow the damn thing up it’s like midday so they fucking FAILED

also I don’t care about this stuff but black and white people did not serve in the same platoons or so I’ve heard. I guess zombies don’t exist either so who cares. Also just realised JJ Abrams produced this, no wonder it sucked

Are there any examples of /hor/ films with nazi experiments that were actually good?

Yeah it sucked. Outpost is better, though not by a huge margin.
War Horror sound great on the surface but it almost doesn't work when the war parts get involved. The best ones are where it's secluded from the war, like The Keep.
Also there's Dead Snow, which I hear is decent.

It's decent. I was hyped so was expecting more.
The highlight is the fact the shark is all practical and looks nice + they have some nice shots focused on the shark's gaping mouth which is creepy and I don't get why other shark movies don't do that
What I didn't like is how 1/3 of the deaths are not shark related which pissed me off, also, they should have used more of the shark's body assuming they actually built it fully, it's mostly just the snout/mouth/head that keeps showing up

>"good if you liked Primitive War (i.e. shit)"
Primitive War has more creature action and deaths but is CGI (of surprisingly good quality to be fair), Beast of War is fully practical, and the plot is not as cheesy but it's still a movie about a shark displaying orca+ level intelligence and preferring live humans than the myriad of fresh dead bodies on the water so don't go expecting a serious movie lmao, it's a fucking shark movie
Also the de facto main character is some abbo mutt soldier so if you're one of those autistic /tv/ types this alone will filter you
>>
>>215350328
good review, appreciate it. I might even watch it just as a perverse cgi vs practical effects battle.
>>
i genuinely don't get it, can any local weebs pls explain? is it merely an fx showcase?
it looked cool i guess. it's like an hour long music video.
>>
>>215350430
Another "bonus" about Primitive War if you care is that it also fully shows dinos constantly, Beast is mostly the shark's head/mouth, and a single shark at that. I feel Beast is gorier however where it counts
Both movies take a while to get started so if you don't care for filler just skip to around 20m which is when the ship falls in Beast or the soldiers go into the dino jungle in Primitive
>>
>>215350443
Man and his girl hit a guy and fuck on his grave, guy happens to be the wrong guy to fuck with and had successfully transcended humanity and turned into a metal demon, now infecting man with his gift

It's about metal. And flesh. And sex. Man and machine.
I love both sequels as well, though they are iterations on the same plot. Tetsuo II was a big influence on The Matrix in multiple ways, also stylish looking film.

it's all a metaphor for homosexuality, a theme that was very popular in cinema during 60-70s japan which became more coded and complex in the 80s and 90s

One thing I didn’t mention was that I liked how the world in this felt like something from STALKER (the game, not the tarkovsky flick I haven’t seen that yet). Just that a bunch of mercenaries can be hired from a bar and they end up in an abandoned bunker filled with corpses and supernatural shit. Pretty good vibes, goes to show that a budget doesn’t make a film good. Thanks for the rec anon :)

Back from Sitges. Best Genre Film Festival by far. Below is a quick run down of some movies I saw. This week willing be attending some screenings at Brooklyn Horror Film Fest.

>The Furious
Great action, but the dialogue and characters are so under cooked.

>Death Cycle
Too low budget for it's own good. It feels like the director has regressed from his previous movie, which was at least competent. Some decent gore.

>Good Boy
Best performance by a dog in a movie, with maybe 2 good scares.Overall underwhelming. Just re-watch Bad Moon instead.

>No Other Choice
The first Park Chan-wook movie I've enjoyed since Thirst. Not as good as his films from the 2000's. Lead actor gives a great performance.

>Obsession
Best horror movie of the year. Darkly comedic often, but has moments of terror and gore. This one is great.

>Man Finds Tape
Very good Found footage movie. Interesting story that is not your typical ff plot.

>The Curse
If you enjoy J-horror like The Grudge or Ringu this movie's for you. Not as good as those movies, but in the same tradition.

>Deathstalker
Better than Frankie Freako, but not as good as Psycho Goreman. The movie's biggest sin? NO NUDITY! Get the fuck outta here.

>The Creeps
Remember that 80's movie? Too much nostalgia, but most of the jokes landed. And there were tits.

>African Kung Fu Nazis II - Bum Bum
A lot of fun. Good job Ghana!

>Odyssey
Lacking the intensity of something like Uncut Gems. Good gore at the end at least.

There's something awesome about Michael in Halloween 2 when he's just walking down the street passed all the people & stores, laser focused in on walking to the hospital. Dude has one goal and was unfazed by everything else.

It's very grim that the one film almost obligated to have nudity in it. Like I do not understand - you look at Terrifier doing laps around other franchises because it actually commits to the horror and gore. But everyone else is so afraid of critics and rumours about sexless zoomers.
Same thing with The Toxic Avenger, "ok we can have tits but we have to IMMEDIATELY show a cock before can someone writes a tweet in the theater calling us misogynist"

30 wall is a bit of a misconception anyway...
general rule of thumb is 20s are a write off, 30s are your get your shit together years and then 40s is life and pay the price... 50s+ depends on how you play it the two decades prior
basically a woman can just stop drinking, doing drugs etc in her 30s and dodge the wall, it's very possible

Bros the Creep show is pretty good. I wasn't sure it would really work in this format, but in reality the shorter format feels a lot better. It doesn't have the same torturous pace and buildup of tension that the movies do, but that makes it a lot more visceral and fun I think

Is there a term for the concept in J-Horror of there being low-level psychics in the cast but ultimately it doesn't really help them stop the evil beyond giving them vague premonitions? I feel like whenever western horror has a psychic or magic user in the cast, they end up being pretty cracked. I was actually really disappointed with Longlegs because of this since her psychic premonitions were just weird demon link bullshit rather than something she was born with.

Actually, as soon as I hit post, I remembered that Sinners basically did this with Sammy, since his power doesn't really help him at all. Honestly respect to Coogler for not having the climax be him summoning spectral clones of bushmen and Flavor Flav to beat up Remmick. Bet that took restraint.
