This movie feels like a knock-off of Alien, The Thing, The Exorcist, and Event Horizon even though it came out before Event Horizon, but it's still pretty good

No. The gimmick gets played out and they have to find reasons for her to not speak when she plainly and obviously would, or at the very least cry out. Also I'm tired of ayy lmao movies where they are treated like retarded slasher villains rather than what the lore depicts them as. Obviously the film makers don't know anything about the subject.
>>
>>215374893
I know the cinematographer of this movie (he also did Abigail the vampire movie I think), really nice guy, but even he said they were stretching the gimmick thin by the end. Apparently the final scene was hilarious for everyone involved with the filming

Sono does horror, but can he pull it off? Depends on how grossed out you are by seeing dark hair fly into various holes while rapidly growing out of others; to quote Frank Zappa: "Hair growing out every hole in me."
In all seriousness, this film works best when the family drama takes a backseat in favor of actual horror, but it cracked me up how much of a bitch the sister was. Of course, seeing her get BTFO in a hairstorm was satisfying and the leather jacket was a nice touch. My favorite part was probably the sequence where a salon worker pulls the strand of hair out her eye then shit hits the fan hard. Sono nailed the atmosphere in a handful of scenes like that.
I appreciate the anon that recced me this but frankly, if we're talking Japanese horror I wouldn't even put it up there with Cure or House… I still liked it though. 6/10

This shit was not bussin ngl.

Complete missed opportunity to expand on his supernatural nature and lore. Instead he just comes back and goes on a murder spree for no reason. He doesn't even kill people in weirdo supernatural ways he just breaks into houses and throttles people to death. The only interesting scene was the "baptism" because it was actually weird and evil.

Well, it seems I'm in minority with my love for this film. Still glad you gave it a try.
It's possible that I liked it, because I haven't seen much jap horror films other than these two you've mentioned. Hausu was great, but that was a movie I more appreciated than loved. Cure was good, but maybe I need to rewatch it, because I've seen it with friends and that could've dampened the atmosphere.
What other films in this subgenre would you recommend?

I've discovered this about movies: The more I watch, the more I *can* watch. There are few, few things I won't see through once I start. I also find myself appreciating parts of films that aren't my favorite at all. These end of the year movie marathons have been very good for me, I think. I did . . . 107 last year I think, from October through December? It felt like an epic quest once I was done, like I'd been reincarnated a few times.

Yes, and that's true. But I when it comes to sequels if you know everyone is going to die by the end you've either got to be in the mood for that or you're not going to watch it. Part of the fun is knowing there's a way to win, but watching all the common sense approaches result in people being killed and going: "Shoot! That was my self insert doing what I would've done and he died." and trying to learn the rules so you would know how to survive. Giving a way to win gives you that satisfaction even if the characters screw up and lose at the end, even if it's a misunderstanding or something. I think it could be fun for different sequels to play around with evil wins or one survives so you really never know how its going to shake out at the end.

Smile kind of saved itself unironically by showing the guy in prison so you knew there was a way she could've gotten out of it.

>>215378417
You'd like Wicker Man then. It's less song and dance and more people singing sea shanties. The only number that's a straight up musical number is a smoking hot blonde chick trying to seduce the main character with sex magic and she's naked the entire time.

Just got out of an early screening. It's a mess. Weird structure where the whole first third is a mockumentary, and it takes another third before the MC leaves her house. It's a mix of cliches and shit that's kinda innovative just because Chris doesn't know how to structure a movie. Kinda loved it in an outsider art way. Word of mouth won't be good. Was impossible for me to think about anything besides how it was made, I definitely didn't get engaged by the story itself. Feels as influenced by video games as movies.
Started a whole other thread before I realized "why didn't I just post this in /hor/?"
>>
>>215375092
That's because horror as a genre is the list enlightenment mind having a mass existential crisis. The villain is supposed to get you and it's supposed to be unstoppable.

The irl villain is our own depravity that inevitably results in death.
Shelly couldn't have a viable child after breaking up a marriage, so she wrote a story about creating life from death that in turn tries to kill you. Stoker see fags get syphilis and spread it to their friends and families so he wrote a story about a monster that penetrates you, sucks you, and then comes after your family. Horror is always just that, and the stories that embrace it become classics. The ones made by prove who don't actually understands the genre fade into obscurity.

Decided to watch more "V-cinema" after a video about it on my YT recs and chose this. As far as Z-grade Evil Dead clones go its decent fun with fun special effects, at the very least it isn't boring like the Canadian ED clone "THINGS" was. Could stand to be a bit shorter even though its an hour long, but it's basically nothing but dumb low budget fun past the 20 minute mark. Better than other Z-grade Japanese horror films like the Guinea Pig series or arguably Biotherapy.
