Rowling obviously sucks at worldbuilding. She throws in cheat items that would have huge implications on the world for plot convenience and later just ignores them. Actually she throws in a lot of stuff that sounds cool/unusual in the moment but is absurd and goofy if you think 30 more secs about it.
And because of this, unless the story is centered around Hogwarts the mythos become too vague and undegined and the reader/viewer can no longer be sure what's possible in this world and what's not. I think Fantastic Beasts do not really work in the same way as the original books/movies because HP universe is not about the outer world but about the school and growing up and friendship and other shit like that. And if you rationalise it too much you get shit like Yudkowsky's fanfic.

>They never taught that spell until the ministry of magic took control of the school
Fake Mad-Eye taught them Avada Kedavra in book 4, as a gag because he thought it would be funny. None of the other teachers seemed to mind, which indicates that teaching the unforgivable curses was common.
>>
>>215495803
The spells were supposed to be demonstrated year six so as to inform the students as to their danger. It's hard to tell people you can't do X if you never tell them what X is. He taught them early, which wasn't against the rules, but it was probably frowned upon.

Its poorly explained but 90% of what makes him scary isnt his magic prowess, though it is very very high. It his willingness to break laws both natural and man made for his own gain. Combine that quality with his consider magical skill is a very terrifying combination. People are generally terrified of Dumbledore because of his immense power, including Voldemort, but he doenst have the same reputation as Voldemort because he acts within bounds.

This is the main issue in the series. Takes me right out of it. They give Hermione a time machine and Slughorn brews up that luck potion that has them breakdancing though curses and hexes without being hit once. In the last book Voldemort tried to kill Harry so everyone in Hogwarts became invulnerable to him somehow. It made more sense when limited to a mother and son. It all just got too common and broadly applicable.

One thing she did right was the recipe for Voldemort's new body in Goblet as it was so specific and costly.

How come no one has actually answered these retarded points?

>>>BE CAREFUL THERE’S A HUGE SNAKE IN THE WALLS
>Dumbledore didn't know that
He was literally teaching at the school when the CoS was opened the first time. Someone had been killed and the mystery was never resolved beyond sending Hagrid to Azkaban for like 20 minutes, btw Dumbledore never believed Hagrid was guilty and he eventually allowed him to work for the school. He might not have known that it was a snake but he knew there was a killer monster on the grounds for like 40 years that was never found. Plus they never actually tried finding the chamber of secrets after that, they just let it happen and moved on. He knew.

>>ALSO DON’T SAY ABRACADABRA AT ANYBODY IT WILL KILL THEM
>They never taught that spell until the ministry of magic took control of the school
These spells are bound to go around. Do you think older kids, dysfunctional families, etc don't wont share inappropriate shit with younger kids? Just like you probably were burning ants with a magnifying glass, salting snails and even burning cats alive, Slytherin kids were probably cruciatusing small animals in the bathrooms and abracadabriaing other student's pets. Kids learn and do fucked up shit regardless of whether or not it is directly taught in school.
>>
>>215491192
>>215503424

>>AND THOSE CREEPY FLOATING GUYS OUTSIDE ARE MAGIC PRISON GUARDS
>They are supposed to be only in Azkaban
But... they weren't were they? The ministry sent potentially the most dangerous creature that they clearly have no real control over, to a school full of children to protect a single child. They could have sent Aurors and station them around the school if that was really necessary. It is like saying: in this normal high school we will have wild bears to protect you instead of security guards now, they're not allowed to come in the grounds but we don't really have means to prevent them from coming inside and mauling the children to death.

Not to mention they could have just kept Harry out of the school, give him a security detail of 5 human bodyguards and home school him without putting hundreds of people at risk.

>>IF ANY OF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND ME IN MY HIDDEN CHAMBERS THAT YOU NEED A PASSWORD TO OPEN!
>They can just ask him to open it for them
This is the only semi fair one but not for the stupid reason you gave. I've been a teacher and in general children don't need to have full access to the headmaster's office. They can easily request a meeting through their teachers. Both in my high school and where I taught the Headmistress was behind two locked doors. However Hogwarts seems to foster a culture where kids DO get full access to their headmaster, so it is somewhat contradictory.
>>
>>215491192
>>215503442

>>OH I ALMOST FORGOT JUST STAY AWAY FROM TREES IN GENERAL AROUND HERE,
>Only one of them, at the corner of the school. It's like saying "don't touch the oven when it's on!"
Yeah well, kids do not get access to a hot oven easily in schools do they? In functional schools they're not even allowed to play in the parking lot. It makes absolutely no sense to have an extremely dangerous, potentially murderous tree, anywhere on the grounds.

>>AND THERE MAY BE AN ESCAPED LUNATIC HIDING IN THE CASTLE OR WHATEVER!
>He didn't know that
Not only the dementors were in the school because he could potentially come, he does learn that he is inside the school when he attacks the Griffindor portrait/door. At this point he should have sent the kids home. He knew.

>>AND ONE OF THE TEACHERS IS A WEREWOLF BUT TRUST ME HE’S A NICE GUY HE’S DEFINITELY GOT THAT UNDER CONTROL!
>He didn't know that
He absolutely knew this. You think Lupin wouldn't have had to ask for the very minor accommodation of being allowed to lock himself in for like a full week while there was a full moon and have Snape cover his classes during that time? Or do you think that teachers can just take time off without reporting to anyone? Not to mention that you seem to think that there was no contact between teachers at all. That makes no sense, teachers collaborate all the time, there are meetings about children's developments and problems. The whole staff must be informed that Lupin won't be available at certain times of the month and at least a handful (McGonagall, deputy headmistress) must know the exact reason.

>>HAVE FUN AND REMEMBER THE POINTS DON’T MATTER I WILL ARBITRARILY CHOOSE THE WINNER AND JUST GIVE THEM ENOUGH POINTS TO WIN!
>God forbid Dumbledore to give points to the literal heroes of the world.
Fair that he gives points to the heroes or the world. The point system is unfair in general since he can do exactly that. Arbitrarily give points to some jerkoff to make them win.

Here is a Time Machine, let's forget about it afterwards. Here is an invisibility cloak, let's use it only for social engineering. Here is a teleportation spell with no limitations. Let's use it occasionally, mostly out of danger. Here is a recipe for luck potion. Let's use it once when it matters least. Here is a recipe for death potion. Yeah, let's not use it at all. Why did the basilisk fang destroy horcruxes?
Why didn't Tom Riddle's phantom just murder everybody at Hogwarts himself?
Why did he use an anagram of his purportedly loathed muggle name for his new name/title?

>Why did the basilisk fang destroy horcruxes?
In original legend basilisks kill by sight because they are super-poisonous, so much that the vegetation around them withers and when stabbed with spear the poison climbs up the shaft and kills the wielder, so it follows that a super magic poison would destroy a horcrux.

That's the point though; why? There's no explicit reason he can't just leave the Chamber and go fuck about on his own. What was this retard's endgame?
I already know the overarching answer of course, and all it really has to do with is that Rowling is a shit writer who was just making shit up to sell copies with no concrete story in mind, no different from your average shōnen manga author. But this was a new low. Until Goblet of Fire, of course.

>dumbledore has an actual face
Not early enough.
>>
>>215503424
>He was literally teaching at the school when the CoS was opened the first time. Someone had been killed and the mystery was never resolved beyond sending Hagrid to Azkaban for like 20 minutes, btw Dumbledore never believed Hagrid was guilty and he eventually allowed him to work for the school. He might not have known that it was a snake but he knew there was a killer monster on the grounds for like 40 years that was never found. Plus they never actually tried finding the chamber of secrets after that, they just let it happen and moved on. He knew.

He knew something happened. Dumbledore was not omniscient, he didn't know quite a few things about the castle. And as the magic school for the British Isles, conditions had to be truely dire to shut the school down.

Indeed, but that's hardly Dumbledore's fault. N.E.W.T. level students are taught that they are dangerous to prevent their usage, but there's only so much you can do when the spell exists in the first place.
>>
>>215503442
>But... they weren't were they? The ministry sent potentially the most dangerous creature that they clearly have no real control over, to a school full of children to protect a single child. They could have sent Aurors and station them around the school if that was really necessary. It is like saying: in this normal high school we will have wild bears to protect you instead of security guards now, they're not allowed to come in the grounds but we don't really have means to prevent them from coming inside and mauling the children to death.

Not to mention they could have just kept Harry out of the school, give him a security detail of 5 human bodyguards and home school him without putting hundreds of people at risk.

It wasn't to protect Harry, it was to get Black. They wanted Harry safe, sure, but the primary goal was to get Black. They could have sent Aurors, yes, but the Ministry was rather incompetant and believed the dementors were controllable. And as he was only headmaster instead of leader of the government, Dumbledore could only do so much. Technically the dementors weren't even supposed to enter school grounds, they were supposed to patrol the perimeter, but again, uncontrollable.

He made himself relatively available, but most likely due to the stuff he kept in his office, he couldn't make it completely avaiable 24/7.
>>
>>215503464
>Yeah well, kids do not get access to a hot oven easily in schools do they? In functional schools they're not even allowed to play in the parking lot. It makes absolutely no sense to have an extremely dangerous, potentially murderous tree, anywhere on the grounds.

That I don't really have a defense for, it was something planted, that served its purpose, and probably should've been removed.

>Not only the dementors were in the school because he could potentially come, he does learn that he is inside the school when he attacks the Griffindor portrait/door. At this point he should have sent the kids home. He knew.

Again, shutting down the school is a massive fucking decision, probably not one he can make himself.
>>

He did know, in fact it was because of Snape's potion skills that he was able to retain his mind during transformations. He locks himself away for a week, drinks the potion, and wouldn't harm anyone. He was shown to be one of the most effective DADA teachers the school had, so it was a win-win all around as long as Lupin drank the potion.

>Fair that he gives points to the heroes or the world. The point system is unfair in general since he can do exactly that. Arbitrarily give points to some jerkoff to make them win.
To be fair, in years prior that's what Snape would do for Slytherin

>No one else went back in time, and threw rocks at themselves, or cast a spell to save themselves.
That we're aware of. I don't want to get all pretentious but there was a good philosophy professor giving a lecture on causality and chronology etc
The subject of time loops came up (like this, the idea of something happening only because someone in the future reacting to it happening) and he basically said that there's no logical issue with their existence. The lingering question is well what causes one to happen in the first place? Answer: It doesn't really matter.

My brother in Christ, there was a murder in school grounds. That's not something you sort of know about. We had an anorexic girl try to off herself and every teacher learned about it because you have to start protocols on how to deal with the rest of the kids. We also had a weirdo kid who was semi aggressive and it was the same thing. Also the CoS is a well known legend and they all knew there was a monster that was meant to hunt down mudbloods. I don't remember how it plays in the book, but in the movie they show them carting out the cadaver of a child while Dumbledore makes eye contact with Tom Riddle. So OP is right

Yes they can. Schools close over bomb, mass shooting threats. A friend of mine had her school shut down a few times because they were close to a jail and there were prisoner breakouts and in this case there was a presumed dangerous mass murderer inside the facilities.

>He did know, in fact it was because of Snape's potion skills that he was able to retain his mind during transformations. I think you are a different anon but I disagree with this. Lupin must have had his shit under control before Snape. Otherwise he couldn't possibly exist in society prior to coming to Hogwarts if every time there's a full moon he murders an entire town. Not to mention Snape is not the only capable potion maker in the whole world.

>To be fair, in years prior that's what Snape would do for Slytherin

He is right in some ways, but the discussion of shutting down (not suspending, closing down) the only magical school in Britain is not a discussion to be had lightly. The next closest was France or Norway. Deaths have happened at schools before, and said schools have reopened eventually. CoS had the point of, if these can't be stopped, the school will be closed down entirely.

>No one said it was his fault. OP was just pointing out that it is absurd writing that such a dangerous spell is seemingly so easy to conjure and learn. Regardless of how it is learnt and who's responsibility it is. OP is right
That's more a question of worldbuilding. OP is right if you agree with him, he is wrong if you don't.

The Ministry's fatal flow throught the entire book series was they wanted to show they had more control over a situation than they ever did. Removing Harry and locking him in a safe house with Aurors would say they don't have as much control over the situation as they were saying.

If the school board didn't want the school closed, Dumbledore couldn't force it closed. And keep in mind, as a boarding school, them kicking everyone out fumigating for Black, taking everyone in, just for Black to show up again, is not an easy decision.

In universe Wolfsbane was expensive due to the ingrediants and skill needed, it was not widely available. Lupin, for most of his life, locked himself in a room. Fundamentally, it's all part of the same problem. You need to understand JK Rowling as a product of her time, and that time was Blairite britain. Defined by managerial mediocrity, the insistence that nothing can ever possibly change, the complete lack of imagination, it all comes together
to ensure Harry Potter remains the dullest possible franchise. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

a-at least the books were good though "No!" The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

Supposedly only the Headmaster knew when Lupin was a student but the other staff are briefed when they hired him on as DatDA prof. Considering that Lupin was able to keep it mostly under wraps all through school and the fact that absolutely nobody aside from the potions teacher wanted the job, it went to Lupin.

Snape was the only staff member that knew since his days as a student. As a prank, Serius Black sent Snape to the shack while Lupin was in wolf form to fuck with him. Harry's father was able to stop him last minute before he could be mauled. Since then, Snape has had it out for Lupin and eventually tells all of the school over breakfast Lupin's secret after the climax of that book.

Harry Potter plot holes are funny until you start looking at the current world and realize why stupid shit happens.

So you can only actually fix a situation if you're already in it wearing a time turner and are able to fix it on a single run around. You can't come in externally to like a murder or something and then crank it back.

HARRY POTTER DID YOU USE REPARO ON LILTH TROONINGTON'S GROIN? XE'S SUING THE SCHOOL TO PAY FOR THE RETRANSITION SURGERY! But extremely based Harry, 6 million points to Gryffindor.
>>
>“Harry Potter, you’ve stretched your legs into trouble one times too many!” bellowed Dumbledore, serenely.
> “Stretch your legs up here, to receive your punishment.”
>Glumly, Harry began stretching his legs towards the teachers table.
>Meanwhile, Dumbledore has stretched his legs out of his throne and is speaking to the whole school.
> “Listen you little shits. I’m tired of your shenanigans and tomfoolery. Students out of bed past 7:30, OR before 7:30. Reading the naughty books in the adults only section of the school’s library. Second helpings of buttered toast at breakfast! Oh you thought I wouldn’t see it but I seen it!”
>Dumbledore ranted in a mild fashion, stretching his legs back and forward as he gently berated his students with facts and logic.
>“I’m going to let Filch bring back corporal punishment. And here he comes now, with the device”
>Filch squibbishly wheels out some sort of medieval torture rack, so full of glee that his legs almost bounce as he stretches them.
>The last few stretches of Harry’s legs up the stairs to the punishment zone (formerly the teacher’s table) seem to take forever in his terror.
>Filch straps in first one if Harry’s feet, then the other foot, then the first one again, properly this time, stretching Harry’s legs to make him fir in the device.
>Dumbledore stretches his legs until he is close to Harry. Exploding stars of madness are visible, swimming in his gentle eyes, behind his half moon glasses.
>“I’ll teach you to fall asleep in Professor Bins class, you rat fuck cunt,” he hisses, calmly.
>“Filch. Stretch his legs.”

>Where's the source that the TV series will fix the plot holes?
Yes anon, the series will finally address the massive gaping plot hole that magic isn't real, and that "Hogwarts" is an elaborate fantasy imagined by Harry to repress the fact that he was sexually abused by his uncle for ten years in that little room under the stairs.

Hopefully it will also address the gaping plot hole in Rowling's own narrative, namely that she is a satanic fag enabler whose own "LGBT" advocacy is directly responsible for many of the mentally ill perverts now invading women's restrooms whom she claims to oppose.

to be fair, it's a small school with about 2 classes worth of students per year
classes like potions are optional past year 5, so maybe 1 class for each of years 6 and 7
they have potions maybe twice a week?
therefore Snape would only have about 24 classes to teach every week

the blacks had a black elf, why didnt bellatrix use it to locate whoever she wanted to find when she tortured the longbottom
why did dobby go see harry and not dumbledore or anyone in the ministry about the diary, why harry? none of the event about that book are linked to harry, there is 0 reason for dobby to go warn harry, he has only cause to warn the weasley about their daughter being in danger or even dumbledor about hogwart being in danger, not harry (lucius give book to ginny, QUICK GOTTA WARN HARRY BECAUSE HE IS FRIEND WITH THE WEASLEY YET I SHOULDNT KNOW ANY OF THAT)
