this movie was a load of shit cuh
1/2Witchboard III: Possession (1995) – A fun, strong Worth a Watch -- junky but *undeniably* enjoyable! While not as classic as the previous two entries in its series, it offers its own share of fast-moving, fuzzy-focus fun. We start with a *fantastic* intro narration by a ghost, who tells of his fatal encounter with THE WITCHBOARD. “My Name is Francis Redmon, and I am dead.” What a way to begin! Then we shift to a fit, out-of-work NINETIES guy with lots of hair who shares an apartment with his wife Julie -- an anthropologist who gives museum tours. (The building the apartment is in is really interesting, sturdy and very old with lots of green bay windows, but I’m not knowledgeable enough to place the style.) One day, while Brian -- dressed in a suit to apparently give himself confidence -- stays home to make phone calls about jobs that go nowhere, the building’s manager, Francis, offers him a drink. And shows him . . . his OUJIA BOARD! Brian’s fascination goes to uncomfortable places, and he ends up possessed through the board by the ancient Sumerian fertility god, NARGOR, who slicks Brian’s hair back and immediately tries to impregnate Julie.
>>215503003>Leaving D.C. editionthis movie sucked ass
>>2155033692/2It’s really funny that that’s all Nargor really wants to do -- go around *making babies*, whereas the typical devil cult mentality is to force the *chosen* one to have a single, important devil baby. When Brian tries to contact his wife from the mirror world, Nargor even tells Brian, “If you try to contact Julie, I’ll kill her! She ain’t the only fertile bitch in the world!” But it’s CLEAR that Nargor really wants the stability of married life with Julie (who instantly recognizes the planchette of the board as “authentic Sumerian”). I supposed he just wants his kid to have the best shot at life he can get! Things get complicated when Nargor tries to incorporate Julie’s friend Lisa into the mix . . . and only *then* does the god turn violent. When he’s getting his rocks off, he’s not really a problem at all! It’s never clear, also, what a Nargor baby is supposed to do. Is it just . . . a baby, because Nargor is a fertility god? Are these going to be special devil babies? The general filming is in this pleasant, soft-shadowed style that suits the ambiance; it looks good despite the cheap budget. Some of the special effects are decent -- one of my favorite being the way Brian’s glowing blue soul wriggles through the planchette hole like a goldfish, and then squirts into a mirror. Nargor as NARGOR, though, looks pretty damned bad -- both on the latex suit side, and when he squishes and stretches with those *awful* nineties morphing effects. The stand-out SCENE from the movie would have to be Brian’s second encounter with the loan sharks, in which Nargor stands up for him (pre-possession) and assaults a fat old usurer with his own collection of mounted butterflies. (I didn’t mention that there was a lot of softcore porn in this, with nipple-suckin’ and faux thrustin’ -- I guess it would stand out more to me if I were twelve and had no access to the Internet.)
Rewatched The Conjuring last night. Also watched the sequel. I liked it but it wasn't as good as the first one also Janet a cute ToT. IMO they showed the ghosts too much but the nun was pretty creepy. I liked the scene with the painting. Managed to fake me out when the light turned off. Are any of the other movies in this franchise worth watching? The only one I've seen is Annabelle Comes Home.
>>215503084kino, thanks
>>215503271Thats cool. In which year did it happen
>>215503406>this franchiseI consider any movie where I don't have unprotected missionary sex with Vera Farmiga in a soft bed on a cold winter morning to be a horror movie and all part of the same cinematic universe, but that's just me.
>>215503003It was all Claire's fault
Watched 3 new movies, so here are my completely pointless brief thoughts:>The Ghost GameIt's pretty typical and predictable, but I enjoyed it enough. It's a 5.5/10. Possession parts are all herky jerky movements because that hasn't been done a million times already.>Haunting CallSkip this. It's pretty shit. Right from the start you get horrible camera work. It's another anti-bully horror movie, which is very common.>HelloweenI knew it, it's another bad British horror movie. This might have been better if it wasn't for the mom being hard to look at it with all her implants/fillers/botox. Why do bong women all have the same look? The ending is retarded and has a plot hole. It's all so predictable and has no scares, not even jump scares. Hell, there's barely any kills.
>>215503526>HelloweenI just don't have much taste for stalker-slashers anymore, new or old. I might watch Behind the Mask sometime, though. What I don't get is that in a world where you have Freddy and Candyman, who point the way to wacky, murderous creativity and lore-building, we still get these dumb fucks who always just go >Nah, we makin' a movie about a masked killer who stalks horny teens at party/camp/school! That's easier! But why bother? It's boring and it's already been done as well as it can be.
>>215503513>>215503596Goddamn whore.
Watch Dreamscape.
The Wailing (2016) – Good Job! Not Worth Watching! At 2.5 hours in length, a horror epic about a curse had *better* be going somewhere. We’d better be privy to the inner working of ALL the major and most of the minor mysteries, and that ending had better be well-rounded and *damned* satisfying. Anything else is just . . . unforgivably SELF-INDULGENT. Well, guess which this one is! We begin in a small Korean town in the rain. It’s very atmospheric -- a suitably innocuous, almost *gently* mystical opening to a story about the unfolding of dark supernatural mysteries. There are bizarre murders, and zombified murderers covered with lesions; the cops are quick to blame the killings on an hallucinogenic “mushroom tonic.” A figure of local legend keeps cropping up: a creepy Japanese man in a shack on the mountain, who might be a sorcerer. There is also weird young woman who appears in dreams *and* reality, and she seems to know ALL about the killings. In the middle of everything is a pudgy, lazy cop who gradually tries to stir himself to action. While he gears up and people die in weird ways, we see Koreans yelling abuse at each other. (Do they do that all the time in *real* life?) We experience long scenes of crying. (The “wailing” of the title?) There are weird stabs at comedy that never quite land. And most unfortunately, happenings of a mystical, or even really INTERESTING nature are too few to justify such a running time. Who is really responsible for the killings, and why? What is the origin or motivation of all these supernatural entities? We don’t ever get to find out anything we *actually* want to know -- even though the tense climax continually TEASES us with the promise of definitive revelations in an admittedly memorable back-and-forth. There is also a very nice example of devil makeup, I’ll say. But is any of what The Wailing offers worth sitting through the whole movie for? Certainly not!
>>215503651it was alright
>>215503683>While he gears up and people die in weird ways, we see Koreans yelling abuse at each other. (Do they do that all the time in *real* life?) We experience long scenes of crying. (The “wailing” of the title?)Bless you for pointing this out. Koreans seem to overemote to the point of unintentional comedy that kills the mood. The abuse thing is really prevalent too. There's some cops and ghosts thing I saw where they're acting like Korean hat squad and one of them actually slapped a female coworker in front of everyone. It's like a parody of the office ballbusting you see in American movies.
I don't want any leftovers this year so i'll be watching horror throughout november too.
>>215504191I feel so superior for watching horror all year round
>>215503683>>215504019I said this in another thread and caught flak for it. Korean acting is just screaming and crying as intensely as possible regardless of what the scene calls for. This is the reaction to every problem presented, big or small, from the start of the film to the end.
>>215504318That sounds awfully similar to Japanese acting
>>215503683i also did not enjoy the film
>>215503683Hey, are Japanese seen as stererotypically tight-lipped in Korea? Note how quiet the sinister Japanese man is.
>>215503683>(Do they do that all the time in *real* life?)Yes, Koreans are stereotyped as a bunch of hotheads.
>>215503513>>215503596I still need an edit of that ghost sex woooo comic with Claire shopped in as the roommate's frame
>>215504191>>215504281I watch then year-round too, but I do love my other theme months of Noirvember (old and new crime) and Explocember (action movies). The last quarter of my year is just a big movie celebration. I'm thinking about making western weeks and comedy weeks in 2026, since I don't have much experience with either.

>>215503277yeah that's fair. I wonder if they hadn't meme casted Nic Cage what we would've gotten instead. part of the intense backlash against the film is how most of us were so enraptured with the first what 45m? where it's doing that stylish Fincher-core better than Fincher before hard shifting into farcical Blumhouse tier nonsense
>>215505216>men are the common enemy.ftfy. They deserve the male loneliness epidemic.
>>215505332YWNBAW
>>215505317gotta admit though there's nothing else like it, except maybe Malignant? maybe there's a world where the Longlegs actor actually holds the film together because I actually don't hate where the film ended up in the last act and with that refined style. I wonder if it'll get reappraised by gen alpha that were young enough for Cage to actually be scary and so the film works for them
>>215503354>Dearly as I would like to see one for Phantom of the Paradise. Maybe Japan will push for that one, or Daft Punk can pull some strings.I don't think Disney's in a hurry after the botched blue and orange-tinted 40th anniv remaster, unfortunately.

>>215505694Skip Halloween 3 and watch 4 and 5 instead to continue the Michael Myers story. I've only seen Night of the Demons and The Crow. Both great, but The Crow is more of a dark gothic Spawn type anti-hero movie. I don't think Meet Me in St. Louis is a horror movie.
>>215505694This is better
>>215505597Really I thought the witch/demon was fucked up and scary looking. Just black rough skin and glowing yellow eyes. Looked like it was made out of mud and twigs, reminded me a lot of the Blair Witch action figures they made
can anybody recommend some horror kino with a heavy focus on cults? similar to the endless, the apostle, the void, etc.
Just finished. Deliberately lame, I think, considering its focus on 50s music and imagery and the stories all being takes on older than dirt urban legends. Thought it was funny the second segment was like a 90s sitcom take on Megan is Missing, lol

The first segment wasn't bad but the rest of it was. I'm not a big fan of most found footage though. If a movie's going to be that ugly to look at, it has to have something really special to make up for it, not generic spooks.

Despite the pedestrian directing, it's a solid script, and I'm grateful for it getting me to notice Brea Grant, who has a solid resume of b-horror stuff. 1/2Pulse (2001) – A very strong Worth a Watch, for weirdness and originality -- on another day, it might even be Excellent. Despite the relative quiet of the film and its length (right at two hours), it’s *surprisingly* not boring. I think this has a lot to do with Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s mastery of background tension, perhaps something to do with his application of ambient noise (computer fans, A/C, etc.) -- so maybe there’s a good reason he’s obsessed with such sounds. There *is* more traditional music, but fortunately it doesn’t swell into the awful, attention-destroying morass of orchestral nightmare that ruins some American films.
>>2155096312/2The plot is a little cryptic, but not overly so: There is no more ROOM in the land of the dead, and the ghosts are coming through any way they can into the world of the living. They start by invading the early consumer Internet! In both Japan and the West at this time, the World Wide Web seemed this mysterious, lawless, boundless place, almost a *true* gateway to other realms -- not the glowie-filled social media wasteland it has become -- so it was a natural and very *appealing* choice as a spiritual pathway in films like Pulse and others. Once the ghosts get a digital toehold, they spread their unease -- this deep, spiritual malaise that drains the energy from people -- and later spontaneously print out instructions on making other kinds of GHOST OPENINGS with red tape. It’s a ghost and an apocalypse film too! While it’s certainly a good, creepy experience, I feel it lacks the INTENSITY of Kurosawa’s Cure; a little of that, maybe, would have set off its ideas better. Perhaps that’s just the intended tone, though . . . The Japanese characters in this movie are so nose-to-the-grindstone that the ghost invasion is in full swing before they can even *look up*. Rather than rage or panic, the predominant emotion is an awkward unease that phases into a quiet, corrosive sadness -- so the old order goes with a *whimper.* (“Kairo” means “circuit,” not “pulse,” and Pulse, as you will see if you watch the movie, is a very nonsensical name for it -- especially considering the analogies made between computers/electricity and spirit. Because in this story, something is INDEED flowing one way, while something else is flowing another . . .)

Pretty well put together for something that clearly cost literally $100. The director's parents are in it! Only an hour long and even includes bloopers, lol. Shot in a backyard in West Virginia.

>>215511241No. Females in space are a liability. 5 men is better than 4 men 1 female. Especially she isn’t some cum rag cause you can bet the 4 beta males arent gonna do shi to her.
>>215511279They all tend to work themselves into a corner, but I don't mind because I don't try to over-intellectualize them. Triangle is the best I've seen.
>>215511306You're watching the wrong Resurrection
>>215503683While I agree mostly, some of the best acting I've seen at film festivals this year were from South Korean movies, No Other Choice and The Woman have really good lead performances.
>>215511365Except they'd pick a woman to join them on the mission over you every single time
>plenty of horror movies that depict christianity or jesus in a negative way>no horror movies that depict judiasm, islam, muhammad, etc. in a negative wayReally makes you think

>>215511836>February 27, 2026Hopefully within the next month.>>215511870>coherence was interesting but it never went deep enough to really hook me in.Agreed. It didn't get interesting until the last half hour while Triangle went headfirst into the gimmick much earlier. The big scene in Coherence where Em tries to kill her duplicate in the bathroom came way too late when compared to the scene in Triangle where Jess discovers all those piled up bodies on the deck. Plus I sympathized more for Jess despite half her lines being "I HAVE AN AUTISTIC SON!!1!" Honestly, neither of them were very likable.
Will Sinners get a sequel?
>>215512086>Hopefully within the next month.Fingers crossed. They should have released it in October to play in front of horror movies in theatres.

>>215512297Longlegs is trash. The marketing team for that movie deserves all the kudos. The Monkey is trash too.
I wish we got Helloween. Would have been a fun pairing with Freddy vs Jason. >The film was set to start with a trick-or-treating flashback of Michael Myers going to a house to get candy. At the house, he is given the box by Halloween's "Man in Black." When Michael opens it, the Lord of the Dead, "Samhain," escapes and inhabits Michael's body. This is evidently what causes him to kill his sister on Halloween and why he becomes the serial killer that he is in the present day. Once the flashback is over, we find ourselves in the Myers' home, and there are people trying to destroy it on Halloween. Those people find the box hidden in a wall, which draws both Pinhead and Michael to the house. Once there, Pinhead and Michael end up in battle with each other. Of course, the final act of the film would have taken place in Hell.
>>215512371The Monkey wasn't much better but at least it was funny at times, like when that chick exploded outside the pool.

>>215512967I've only seen the sequels.
>>215512998Look at the trailer. Does it look like it won’t have woke in it?
>>215512413There were a bunch of drafts for Freddy vs Jason that included retconning Freddy into Jason's origins, it was one of the biggest potential pitfalls that that movie managed to avoid. Hellraiser and Halloween are both lower quality series than Friday the 13 and Nightmare, this is proof.
