Brooklyn Horror Film Festival ended yesterday. Here's quick rundown of the few films I saw.

>New Group
Definitely has a Junji Ito vibe. If you've seen the director's previous film Best Wishes To All then you know his social commentary is not subtle. A little too weird for me and not really scary. Some will find it just plain silly.

>The Holy Boy
Holy kino! One of the best movies I've seen this year. Feels like a Twilight Zone episode and gets very dark. Brief eye-talian girl nudity. It'll be out on SHUDDER next year.

>Dust Bunny
Not as bad as I thought it would be. Tries to be a little too quirky and cool at times, but the humor hits its target more than not. Not really scary, feels like a movie for younger kids. CGI isn't the best, especially when used for backgrounds.

Halloween movie night falls on me this year. I need 3 movies. I'd like to spread out both in terms of subgenre but also also region/language.

I'd like to cover:
NA/english
Europe (preferably in a language other than english)
Asia

I'd also like to cover:
Mainstream horror
Non-mainstream horror
Physical horror (gore and violence)
Psychological horror
Different moods (from disturbing and serious to more entertaining spectacle horror)

What are your ideas to cover as much as possible?

i watched:
mimic, which wasn't anything like i remembered from watching as a kid. i could have sworn the bug guy was wearing a hat and a trench coat at some point. maybe because it was the director's cut.
fright night part 2, which was way better than i expected, exceeding even the original in my view. i love a movie with a gang of ghouls tearing shit up. definitely the evening's highlight.
and house II: the second story, which was barely even a horror movie, but had some fun stuff in it.

They lose a map, argue about it, get spooked by twigs tied together, people go missing which you don't see happen, they run around scared shakey camera and all, and ultimately there is no witch... NOTHING happens. That's not being filtered, that's pointing out a shit movie that was only ever successful because of a gimmick and nothing else. The movie does NOT deliver on what you want to see in a horror film.

I saw in 2000 on home video, but my response to it was about identical to my response rewatching it ten years ago - positive but lukewarm. The movie had a lot of buzz back in the day, but early on it was parodied and made fun of. Not sure you had to be there to really appreciate the movie itself.

The gimmick doesn't work in 2025. No one thinks the movie's real and when you remove that aspect of it, you're stuck with a boring as shit movie where it's just characters walking around in the woods. I was alive back then but I didn't watch the movie because I was young and didn't care. Nostalgia shouldn't be how we judge movies because you view them though rose tinted glasses. You need to judge film accordingly while putting nostalgia aside. When you do that, you realize BWP fucking sucks ass. It's a boring movie.

I liked her character. "Psycho little girl" is a tired trope, but at least they wait a while to show how nuts she truly is. It helped me feel more sympathetic toward B.

it has maybe the most realistic physical violence i've ever seen in a film. a lot of struggling, fumbling around, falling over each other, genuinely tearing clothes off. very little of it looks fake or rehearsed

WTF WAS HALLOWEEN ENDs? just watched this shit on goyflix. I enjoyed it but like...I didn't really understand it. It felt like a totally stand alone movie, like something created by a totally different writer/director than the first two. I think it would have been better as just as stand alone thing, really cool aesthetics/atmosphere, but like? WTF did it have to do with Michael Myers? what was the point?
>>
>>215516375
I wouldn't call it a style so much as an approach. I don't like the idea of elevating horror because, for one, I'm a fan of horror. I don't think it needs to be consciously dressed up in artistic and intellectual ambitions. The appeal of horror for me, is the genre's trappings, and how filmmakers unconsciously forge unique works, both expressive and creative, without ego or being overly contrived. Of course, there are always exceptions, but that is sort of the ideal. Furthermore, at its best it is uninhibited. Horror films are free to be tasteless because they are low-brow. It lets them rattle about in the visual playground and create remarkable images or hit on exciting ideas, because these films often just don't care about catering to higher sensibilities. All that said, I will give Cat People another watch sometime, because I want to pick the 4k eventually.

short rare interview Angst director, his only feature film
https://othoncinema.com/2025/07/08/interview-with-gerald-kargl/

great score by Klaus-Schulze doesn't get mentioned enough

>The film’s aesthetics emerged through the camerawork of Zbigniew Rybczynski. He came up with various suggestions. For example, we mounted a mirror in front of the camera. The camera didn’t film the scene directly but rather its reflection in the mirror. This expanded the space, because the mirror shifted the camera’s focal point behind the mirror. As a result, the camera took on virtual positions—it filmed from viewpoints where it physically couldn’t be.

>That the international splatter community eventually discovered the film was never the goal. I don’t see the film as a splatter movie. The fact that it’s considered an art film today—well, times change. When the film premiered in 1983, people in Austria, at the very least, turned up their noses. That harmed me and made it more difficult for me to finance another film.
>>
just saw it. yes, it has its obvious flaws but indeed is a great representation of a bad mental state. not scary, but it managed to be somewhat eerie considering it's mixture of psychological and ghost horror.

Incredible.
Luciano Tovoli also shot Tenebre so Kojima's absolutely correct. I'm pretty sure Tovoli once claimed he and the crew actually directed Suspiria instead of Argento, but that always sounded awfully semantic… obviously the DOP is going to have a considerable hand in how a film looks, especially one so reliant on complex lighting.
