It doesn't really feel like it's Halloween season..... The rest of the world doesn't care about Halloween anymore. Christmascels won.

Brooklyn Horror Film Festival ended yesterday. Here's quick rundown of the few films I saw.

>New Group
Definitely has a Junji Ito vibe. If you've seen the director's previous film Best Wishes To All then you know his social commentary is not subtle. A little too weird for me and not really scary. Some will find it just plain silly.

>The Holy Boy
Holy kino! One of the best movies I've seen this year. Feels like a Twilight Zone episode and gets very dark. Brief eye-talian girl nudity. It'll be out on SHUDDER next year.

>Dust Bunny
Not as bad as I thought it would be. Tries to be a little too quirky and cool at times, but the humor hits its target more than not. Not really scary, feels like a movie for younger kids. CGI isn't the best, especially when used for backgrounds.

>the very dreadful revelation that this supernatural entity/monster exists isn't enough, it *has* to represent a mundane human experience like guilt, trauma, regret
This so tacky and I wonder why they usually opt for this in movies.
In my favorite Blackwood, MR James, EF Benson, HPL stories that's almost never the case. The character might be in an already vulnerable mental or physical condition to amplify the terror of the encounter, but the supernatural element isn't some sappy exact parallel to a human emotion.
Poe kind of did the former but none of these writer fags in movies have ever created anything as good as the Premature Burial or the The Cask of Amontillado (at least recently)

"It's a metaphor for guilt/depression" is the 21st century "It was all a dream". It's the escape of the insecure writer who knows his work doesn't hold up. It's not so bad when the evil entity still exists, but movies where it was all psychological are automatic 0/10.

So, this wasn't really bad. I think it was actually pretty good, for what it is. It's funny, kinda corny, the ogre looks like shit, but would have been okay if they only showed it at night or from afar. They really overused that cg model. Katherine Isabelle's performance really made this an entertaining watch.

My answer is In Fabric. Instant favorite, funny, not scary but weird and unsettling, and has a small SFW /ss/ scene.

YellowBrickRoad was also great, highly recommended if anyone has read that unproduced Thomas Ligotti X-Files script, Crampton.

Basically the only ones I didn't like were Ginger Snaps and Skinamarink

>>215529400
I really liked it. Felt Lynchian and weird the way the characters talk to each other. Could be supernatural or could just be a woman having an extended woman moment
>>
>>215529418
I honestly really liked The Wind. I love westerns/the desert and desu I project cosmic/Eldritch horror on stuff like this. Like it felt like a cosmic entity or entities were ducking with these people like The Endless. It was also interesting to see only the women be affected by the supernatural, all the men in the movie are like "what are you talking about? Everything's normal". The demon pamphlet also has a cool design. I also enjoy movies with unreliable narrators

Watched ā€˜The Cell’ last night. Has some neat visuals but it felt like a melting pot of ideas that the Indian director ā€œborrowedā€ from other things. It was also ridiculous that instead of doing a proper search of the killer’s house for evidence (which is eventually what helps solve the case), the FBI immediately resorts to the experimental ā€œgoing into minds machineā€.

What would you have liked to be different? Explicit demons? I'd be down for that as well. Madness is hard to depict visually, so I can see why they didn't want to have an actual monster.

Also there's several armpit and feet shots in the Wind, written and directed by 2 women. Also kinda thought it was interesting a woman would write a "women be crazy" movie

Any types of horror tropes you dont find scary? I dont believe in ghosts for example and find haunting movies a bit boring although i like the atmosphere and camera tricks they employ. good movies but hardly "essential"
the rest are good in a very vanilla way except for event horizon which i wouldn't call essential in any way
>>
>>215529643
nah, i wouldn't want explicit demons. i like purely psychological horror movies just fine. mostly my problems are with the pacing (i don't take issue with the non-linear storytelling, i think that's great for making the audience feel as disoriented as the protag) and i thought the ending was disappointing because it felt like it was from a different kind of horror movie entirely. i thought the characters were underdeveloped and didn't love the performance of the secondary female lead. when she spoke i just kept thinking "she sounds like she knows what an iphone is"
>>
>>215530090
Rosemary's Baby is one of the biggest and most influential horror hits of the 60s. I'd definitely consider it essential 60s horror just as The Exorcist is essential 70s horror
>>
>>215526916
You cut the best part.
>>
>>215530128
so? again, just because it's a good film doesn't mean it's essential

Between Tomasi and Zdarrski was King's run. Tomasi had Batman surviving three consecutive jet plane crashes, and Zdarski had him surviving a fall from the moon.

King delivered feats nowhere near those, but he did deliver the themes in that run. I don't like King either, but he did Batman well enough.
>>
>>215530163
>so?
So it being a huge cultural staple of the horror genre makes it an essential movie
>>
>>215530093
Definitely feel you on the other female lead, kek @ that description.

I thought the pacing was fine personally, it just slows down to let you catch up and start thinking, imho. I liked the ending, reminded me of The Shining honestly. She just died of exposure probably. Or the entity takes her away. I def think it has room for improvement, I probably give it more credit than it's due cuz I liked the setting and cinematography so much
>>
>>215530229
The insanity and demons stemming from a woman's unhappiness at being cooped up in the middle of nowhere with a man she doesn't even like, and I remember there being some pregnancy trauma. You thought the movie was literally just "there's a demon"?
>>
>>215530184
there are a lot more films from that era that were way more culturally significant than rosemary's baby, some of them aren't even on that list like night of the living dead and psycho, hell i'd say that even carnival of souls had a greater impact on horror than rosemary's baby
i wouldn't call it influential in any regard as it didn't invent anything new and didn't set an example for future creators to follow. it isn't even polanski's best film from that decade
to say it's essential while not recognizing any of the other way more significant films from that time should be considered an insult

The argument can be made that the demon caused the insanity. You're projecting your woman hate into this movie. Both women are affected, but one woman is happy I her marriage and the other isn't. A woman's jealousy leading to her own death isn't some woke propaganda like you seem to think, retard "and I remember" nigger your brain is full of worms, you can't even remember shit right. Please kill yourself at your first available opportunity, thanks.

I'm unsure of which Tom King runs you're talking about because I am only following Batman and Justice League. Here I'll throw you a bone: Tom King's run on The Brave and the Bold vol 1 is one of the most disgusting books I've ever read. It reminds me of Mark Millar's The Unfunnies in that I wish I had never picked it up in the first place.

But his Batman run resonated with some years. Just saying.

Morrison's stuff smoke the shit out of King. There's decades of good Batman comics and you read modern slop.

The run I'm referring to was probably about 7or 8 years back. Some big crossover shit I'm sure DC walked back 6 months later

As a kid in the 90s, I would have killed to be able to get a Michael Myers mask. All I had was the Ghostface mask, the shitty Freddy glove with the rounded off tips, and the Jason mask that looks nothing like the Jason mask.

There's a site that actually makes decent replica Jason masks from each movie, and I always forget to get one until October, and they're always sold out for the month.

It's just an extension of our over-therapeutic culture. Everybody with even the slightest mental distress gets told to therapy, where therapists will excuse every awful thought or action so long as the patient has "trauma". This creates a mindset where anything can be excused, and even praised, so long as there's some psychological condition involved (this coincides with modern identity politics, where any horrific behavior can be excused by "oppression" or "trauma"). As a result, any film, especially one that's otherwise shitty, can instantly get critical praise and social media buzz by invoking these psychological themes. Any legitimate criticism gets dismissed by "You just don't get it because you don't have (insert psychological condition here)", mirroring the defensive posture of the therapy patients themselves. All of this is retarded, of course, because a huge part of horror rests not in representing some mundane human experience, but rather in its otherness and unfamiliarity to humans. That's why, as you said, Lovecraft is so great, he captures that spirit of horror in which man is confronted with something transcendent of his own understanding.

The performances were incredibly hammy and exaggerated (especially the schizo guy), which is true of most Jap acting but it was particularly egregious here. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie wasn't much better, the story was cliche, the special effects sucked, and it was stretched out too long. It had one good scene, which I wish I had just looked up instead of sitting through the whole thing.

That was a decent little thriller, though it was pretty heavily carried by the actor that played Josef. Appreciated the mid-movie twist. Watched Bubba Ho-Tep. This movie should be boring in any other universe and yet, it's not: Bruce and Ossie's friendship genuinely moved me at the end. Sure, for a mummy horror it should have definitely had a few more soul-sucking scenes but I'm somehow at peace with the end result.

All is well.
