WHAT UP DINGO NATION!!! got a cool review for you of a classic curtiz/ flynn joint, The Sea Hawk. Drop a like and ring that bell asap!!!

>Swashbuckling adventure. Beautifully lensed, shadows from two fencers darting across the background is a highlight, as is a panning shot of some galley slaves. That alone puts it above Captain Blood, which I mostly bounced off of. The script is functional but Flynn basically never interacts with his love interest (Brenda Marshall, who looks alright I guess) outside of two short scenes and then spends a good chunk of it traipsing through the jungle/ in chains. That first action scene really makes an impression, but this is relatively light on action for most of the runtime. Overall, it looks fantastic, there's some great action and the script does its job even if the middle act drags. Great work from Sol Polito.

Jonathan Rosenbaum has this thing where he keeps bringing up A.I. Artificial Intelligence and exalting it as one of the greatest films ever, regardless of the context. I've mentioned this here once, but in the Metropolis (1927) Blu-ray commentary, he breaks into a laudatory spiel about how it's a masterpiece, and the co-host is dead silent throughout it.

Given the recent wave of shitty musician biopics (Dylan, Springsteen, MJ, four fucking Beatles films), I'm surprised there hasn't been anything on the greatest, or at least the most important, jazz musician of all time.

Spike could direct it. His whole life story is already extremely cinematic. He was a victim of police brutality, he was rejected by the establishment and then embraced by it and then rejected by it again (by going electric), a drug addict, a literal fucking pimp (SHO-NUFF). Come on now.

Just watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon for the first time.
Every thing about the movie was excellent except for everything involving Zhang Ziyi's character.
It felt like the film was trying way too hard to get viewers to be sympathetic with her character, when she's just a spoiled and privileged little rich young woman whose selfishness, woman moments, impulsiveness, adventurism and arrogance is the cause of nearly all the death and destruction in the story.
Even the movie's actual "villain" (Jade Fox) angrily chastises Zhang Ziyi's character for stealing Li Mu Bai's sword, and rightfully so, because if Zhang Ziyi didn't do that, none of the bad things in the movie would have happened.
And by the end of the movie, we don't even get any kind of 100% certainty as to whether or not she pays for her crimes.
She jumps off the bridge to help fulfill her lover's wish--a callback to that earlier legend mentioned in the film by the lover about a man jumping off a mountain to fulfill his wish of saving his parents--but the movie doesn't give us any definitive answer as to whether or not she actually dies or whether the legend is true. It's left ambiguous. Did she die after jumping? Or did she transcend and reach enlightenment?
If Zhang Ziyi's character was actually a rich young man, people would be writing endless articles about toxic masculinity. But because the character is a woman, viewers on comments sections on YouTube all let her off the hook for her crimes. It's genuinely baffling. Are the people worshiping her character just chicklit fans who wished they could be in her shoes so that they can experience all these women moments without repercussions and have everyone love her and revolve their world around trying to influence her?
>>

WHAT UP DINGO NATION!!! got a cool review for you of a classic julie adams joint, The Mississippi Gambler. Drop a like and ring that bell asap!!!

>Stunning period drama. Tyrone Power looks old and leathery in this, Julie Adams looks great though she's barely in it. Beautiful lighting and compositions from Irving Glassberg, especially the night scenes on the riverboat. Not a lot of action in it, other than a few brief scuffles and a pistol duel. The visuals and Julie Adams are just that good, and Tyrone Power is a functional leading man. One to watch.

Do you fuckers even read? Genuine question. I don't get the point of having an encyclopedic knowledge of world cinema but knowing the bare minimum about theatre or theatrical traditions.

Nakadai was born before the war, survived air raids, starvation, and the chaos of post-war Japan, and still clawed his way to the top.
Of course his quality, grit, and presence are on a completely different level compared to the pampered actors who only popped up after Japan got rich.
It’s not even the same species of dedication.
>>
>>215900005
Thanks for the post, Gaylord.
>>
>>215900005
A major factor is that starting in the 90s, Japan began putting Johnny’s idols, whose acting was basically amateur level, into movies and dramas, which completely destroyed the environment needed for real actors to grow.
Up through the 80s, partly thanks to Kurosawa’s influence, Japanese live-action films still had a real presence on the global stage.
But from the 90s onward, they stopped being able to compete internationally, especially in West.
Japanese actors also stopped gaining global attention, with only rare exceptions like Ken Watanabe or Hiroyuki Sanada breaking through.

Meshes - Essential
At Land - Very good; for cinephiles
Cleo - Essential
Clueless - Essential
Virgin Suicides - Barely above the WOAT list
American Psycho - Essential
Kevin - Average

List seems like basic bitch shit, though.
On another note, I feel like Alicia Silverstone is a qt.
