Does anybody else have trouble taking Cardassian warships very seriously in DS9? They always felt like a paper tiger.Literally the first time we see them, the Phoenix is going on a one ship tear against them. It easily destroys a Cardassian warship despite the Cardassians having the prefix code to lower it's shields. When the Galor class attacked the Enterprise, it was firing all its weapons and barely putting a dent in the Galaxy class's shields. Picard calmly tried hailing them a few times while they fired in vain, then said "Number One, I believe we have been exemplary in our patience." Boom, the Enterprise fired one (maybe two, don't remember) shot and disabled their engines. The Kingons invaded Cardassian space and nearly overwhelmed the entire thing, to the point that the government was evacuated from Cardassia prime. This happened near instantaneously. Yes it was a surprise attack, but it was also only about 1/3rd of their military, and they got in far enough that Cardassia prime was threatened and their military didn't think they could defend it.
>>215970032i really don't believe you
>>215970046they are not meant to be taken seriously are they? DS9 starts with them fucking off because they lost and trashing the station just to be petty

>>215970293>The joke's on you; we're 4channers.Holy cringeola
>>215970271Being technically right is the worst kind of right.
>>215970335I do like the "Spock takes command" episodes though, so while I don't agree with him I still respect his choice.
>>215967116See, even TV Guide says the show is for kids. And here you are, grown adults obsessing over a kids's show, and injecting your weird sexual fantasies into it. Shatner was spot-on when he told you to get a life.
>>215970419Thank you Lieutenant Saar
>>215970419>“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

How has /trek/ stayed alive for so many years?
>>215970474Based CS Lewis. Guy was a quote machine.>“Since it is so likely that (children) will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker.”
>>215970583>historyyoure a fucking retardyou dont steal a warship and get away with it because the mission was only a partial failure
>>215970590Because Star Trek is good and timely and still relevant. It's some of the only forward-looking fiction with an optimistic view about humanity's future. That puts it on a short list if you're looking for something that might actually impact you positively and keeps new fans coming into the franchise.

>>215970590If you watch one 'sode of TOS-ENT per day along with the movies it would take you over two years to do a full rotation. It's a lotta content.
>>215970591GK Chesterton also had a lot of quotes, and did a lot of writing in general, in the benefits of heroic fiction. Even though it's "childish", it is meaningful.
>>215970705kirk was stripped of his rank and would have been kicked out of the service if he didnt save earth from total anhiliation on his way to the court martial. sisko wasnt punished because the brass was ashamed their plan failed. they dont even hold it against him when he needs worf to come save him and they promote him to captain so they arent the same rank. sisko is a worthless criminal who abandoned his pregnant wife. any other starfleet officer would have had bajor in the federation in 18 months.

I'm starting to feel the need to rewatch all of Trek in airdate order.
>>215971084Do it.
>>215971084That’s how I tend to do mine, but it gets a little tricky when there’s overlap, say between DS9 and Voy, in which case I just conclude the series that started airing first. Generally doesn’t seem to matter much given I’ve seen them all already, but if I hadn’t it might be confusing >Julian shows up on TNG and starts touching sensitive stuff on the enterprise >”it’s fine, I’m a very important doctor”>”engineering to security, there’s an unauthorized brown guy down here, halp”

>>215970889Sisko the darkie?
>>215967774I cloned my hard drive. Does that mean I grew it in a vat? Retard.
>>215971142That overlap is what makes me the most curious about doing it. Though the main exception I'd make is watching two parters and the like through to the end just to get the complete story before going to something unrelated.
>>215970716You could base your life around it.
>>215971084Post daily progress with screenshots.
>>215971043For my part, I don't need either. the most important theology in tolkien's work is the stuff about elephants and you can learn everything there is to know about faith by considering the sam/smeagol elephant dichotomy.
>>215971281It’s not much, mostly just cameos to establish continuity, rarely if ever relevant to any longer term plots or plot elements. Keep in mind the crossover periods usually marked the beginning of a new series, meaning it’s not terribly consistent with the series as a whole. I’m not arguing against it per se, it’s just a bit of a bit of pain in the ass with no real benefit t. watched it all as it aired back in the day except TOS, I’m old but not that old
>>215971419> watched it all as it aired back in the day except TOS, I’m old but not that oldconsider yourself lucky. my local television stations aired TNG and VOY when it came out but I had no local station that picked up DS9. I would be able to watch an episode or two when I was on vacation with my parents if we traveled but otherwise I didn't see it until much later when I was able to pirate the whole series.I enjoyed VOY but DS9 was always this mysterious show that i longed to watch
>>215971419I'm not expecting any great crossover in that regard, it's more just seeing how they fit in. The idea of flicking between the Dominion War and one of the wacky holo-adventures on Voyager amuses me.

>>215970497DS9 *was* Sisko's prison.
>>215971774We’ve been stripped of any rites of passage that traditionally would’ve marked the passage into adulthood and purposefully infantilized by a system that wants it this way. It’s a feature not a bug
>>215970604You have a child's view of "the rules". Grownups know it's easier to get forgiveness than permission. They also know that, if they enforce the rules too pedantically, no one will want to subject themselves to the rules, and the rule-enforcers will be left all alone, with no support.
>>215971812Why didn't Worf simply dodge the barrel?
>>215971834Episode too short >Worf does a barrel roll>near-miss incident report filed, credits roll
>>215971774nice self report lol yowch
>>215971829he asked permission and it was denied.
>>215970497Member in Star Trek: First Contact, when Picard told the bridge crew he was about to defy Starfleet's orders, and even Data spoke up with "To Hell with our orders"? Clearly, after they finished saving Earth from time-traveling Borg, they should have been ejected out of the airlock into space. Moron.
>>215971862>Worf does a barrel roll
>>215971887What you describe is a lesson that Star Trek has taught multiple times. Orders are important but there are things more important than orders and there may come a time when you must do what is right not what is legal.

>>215972133Literally untrue. You can come up with your own rites of passage. The Peace Corps are still around. If you're too timid to leave the country, there's AmeriCorps. He's so lame.
>>215973596Thomas was totally a Riker from an alternate timeline and the transporter accident was similar to the one that led to the Mirrorverse. Just that he was from one much closer version of the prime timeline so nobody picked up on it at least right away.
>>215973358Idiot
>>215973661No, he's blind. He has both legs.
>>215973633>holodeckbreaks down too much>, or androids, more trouble than they're worth >or Landrew, bad guy >or Vger.bad guy
>>215973972>Aaaah I'm blind please kill me it's dishonarabu!
Now *this* is table.
>>215973633Current day "AI" isn't general AI, it's just a language model trained to spit out responses that are likely to make a human think they are talking to a person.
>>215974036Were the props department trying to see how close they could get a table to looking like a toilet before someone noticed?
>>215974036>>215974102I always assumed they had bigger plans for that table. Like the silver stuff being touch displays like on the bridge and the black stuff projecting holograms.
>>215974102>This is the one and only conference room table used during Voyager. A re-paint occurred when on hiatus the crew came back and there were water leaks so all of the set pieces painted gray got a re-paint in green. This table comes apart in 5 pieces so the film crew could easily get up close to whomever they wanted to. The table is extremely well engineered and actually over engineered and built. Still has the original light panel where Janeway sat. I have tucked the electrical cord up and it now has a battery light.
>>215973633>Star trek fan>Is wary of "AI" and it's consequences Well yea, you haven't actually watched star trek have you?
>>215974507Star Trek writers thought the biggest threat of AI was an autistic green dude who doesn't get jokes and a hologram Moriarty.
>>215974571How far we have come.
>Yeah, HI we're the Dominion and we'll be your end. We'll show ya total DOM-I-NATION
How much bloodshed could have been prevented if Sisko had accepted his role and taken a more active role in the Bayoran religion?
>>21597486110%
>>215974861>sacrifice your son to save a billion CardassiansNah, he did the right thing.
>>215974861wasn't there a time when he was fully consumed with acting on visions that were filling his head and people were like ready to Old Yeller him over it?
>>215974571So you haven't seen star trek, got it
>>215974923Yeah, the episode where he stopped Bajor from entering the Federation.
what would have saved the most live is Worf looking the other way when Garak was about to hit the button to genocide the goo people. yet another in the long long list of reasons Worf blows.
>>215973064Out of ten!
>>215975077Wasn't that a decoy planet or am I thinking of a different episode?
>>215974013Neither Landrew nor Vger were "guys"... Or even "gals", for that matter. What I don't see is any characterization of any of the examples given as "slop".
Are there any good Star Trek comics? Or just interesting ones - like if they are shit but batshit insane that also works.
>>215974063No. It isn't. It's much more than that, and anyone would have to be a completely ignorant moron to not know that.
>>215975137i think you are thinking of an earlier episode. in the one I'm thinking of they took Odo there to get cured or whatever and Sisko literally brought Garak along just to keep him company it was actually an extremely stupid reason for him to be there
>>215974571I thought Spiner was only green in the movies.
>>215975084Right?
>>215975200Oh, you're that guy from Ex Machina who lets the robot escape
>>215975217I think the one I'm thinking of is the one with Garak's mentor.
>>215975154I wouldn't call it brilliant but there's the comic where Q and a bunch of powerful aliens like Tremaine abduct the main casts of TOS-VOY to pit against each other in mixed teams.
>>215973661I think they started really strong with Geordi, neat little promotion arc in S1, pretty good episodes here and there after that, I think then his last good episode was where he got mindcontrolled into trying to kill an admiral or whatever and it was all downhill from there.
>>215975568Geordi is better with computers than he is with women.
>>215975636and he is no good at computers
>>215975636Yea we get it! It shouldn't have been what his character was about for the rest of the series then, shitty romance episodes and whatever that frog episode was. I guess I forgot about the tied up with Romulan episode, that one was pretty good.

He doesn't watch Star Trek. He doesn't even like Star Trek. He's admitted it before.
>>215979371Apparently, brain tumors are excruciatingly painful because well, it's something growing inside your skull and your skull ain't growing with it. There was a guy with one at the nursing home my mom worked at and she would talk about how the guy would just scream in absolute agony sometimes, and it's the worst sound she ever heard working like 40 years in CCU/ICU before going to retirement home/hospice. It's definitely one of the absolute worst things that can happen to a person
>>215979610but I thought he had lung cancer
