Jaouz edition.

To what extent do you separate the art from the artist? Is it easier to do so with directors than actors, who can hide behind the camera and don't have to rely on an aura of charisma and likeability? Do you hold it against other posters when they admire an immoral (from your point of view) actor/filmmaker?

>QOTD: Canto Due
Who are your problematic favourites? Be it actors or directors.

Bad Moon Rising and EVOL are my favourite Swhy records.

I would suggest to Birkinbro to listen to The Whitey Album and TV Shit with Yamatsuka Eye, they are some noisy studio records.
I was disappointed to find out Thirsty Thurston sings Starpower live because it's my favourite Kim studio performance and I don't like him singing on it even though he wrote it.

EVOL is a superlative work of art. If it was just Shadow of a Doubt repeated 10 times, it'd still be a near-perfect album. The only reason why Daydream is my favorite is due to the personal affection I hold for it.

The Whitey Album would probably appeal to a Zappa fan, you're right on the money about that. Realistically, though, the "correct" thing to do is starting with the self-titled EP and listening to all of their albums in order, starting from there.

She's great at playing a shithawk. Perhaps the greatest female shitbird actor alive. Her chaotic evilness almost redeems The Hateful Eight. Most women are too conscious of their looks to effectively play a demon hag. I quit watching Fargo midway through season 2, I'm not a fan of the Coen bros and their lolsorandom style. I do like Hudsucker but maybe that's because of the Raimi writing credit tempering their worst impulses. It's funny that NCFOM and TWBB are so inextricably linked... Isn't one clearly far outstripped by the other?

Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Roman Polanski, Klaus Kinski, William Burroughs, Armie Hammer and Deadwood Pedo are my unproblematic favs.

(I only chain the art to the artist in special cases, like John Landis, where the crime was committed within the art.)

I did this, it's interesting to see how they start noisy, go gothy for a spell, have a (for my taste, I don't like Sister) painful transition growing pains phase where they're like a dweeby alt rock band, then fully emerge as a magisterial noise pop band with GOO.

I mean, that’s the whole point of this entire section: to make you reflect on the dullness of everyday life on how existence loops in quiet, almost imperceptible cycles, and yet we persist, compelled by something we can’t quite name, or some vague distant goal.
Moving forward through repetition as if meaning might emerge from the very act of continuing. And in fact, the very softness and secondary nature of the game’s storyline becomes part of its poetic beauty as if the narrative itself chooses to step back, allowing the weight of the everyday to speak louder than plot.

Iiiiiiiinteresting…… I find that when people say “Every Ozu is the same”, I have this response. The repetition is the point. You realise he is a master even more every time you watch one of his joints. He turned his entire oeuvre into one meta-masterwork. Bresson only did this within movies separate movies but Ozu loops across movies and has a greater, more holistic experience…

"First six tracks" is basically the whole album. They added 4 bonus songs (including Halloween) on the CD version, but Death Valley '69 is the real closer. EVOL (the record BMR precedes) has even more of that "haunted nostalgia" vibe you're referring to. It's masterful, thoroughly recommended.
I always heard that Albini lyric as "If I had that to go home to/I'd never leave my bed" btw.

I don't think the views presented by characters in films are necessarily reflective of the artist's personal views. I do however try taking into account any background information I may have of the artist. If I have an idea of how the artist thinks, it adds context into the piece of art I'm enjoying. Actually, art can very well be reflective of the artist's personal views. I love changing my mind during a paragraph. Descartes meditation type shit.

Korean americans suck, their flicks are fucking boring. Kogonada sucks. Sundance 2026 has TWO korean american films in it's US competition and both sound boring as fuck, especially Bedford Park (muh familial expectations who gives a fuck, this shit about asian parents being unbearable is getting tiresome), Kogonada made passable Columbus, but After Yang was dumb and cringe, don't have hopes for the new one. Celine Song's Materialists was okay if you take it as a pastiche on rom-coms, but Past Lives was a gloss magazine cover version of In The Mood For Love. Even fucking Moonlight is a better and more authentic homage to WKW. But usually it's even worse, as I already mentioned all of that shit is about how their parents expect some shit from them and they can fulfill those expectations and for some reason this is a problem, like who gives a fuck nigga? You're in America now, put those fucks in a retirement home and never call them again lol.

Also, I noticed that most of the debut features through festivals are made by millenitards. Mfs in their 30s are making first movies, fuck were they doing in their 20s? No wonder most of those flicks fucking suck, one's creative prime is usually the 20s, and they can refine their skill during that time to keep making good movies further in life. But the filmmakers who start at 30 and later are rarely any good, you need to have exceptional talent and energy, you're most driven at your 20s to do shit. Barely any zoomers out there making films, are those fucks also gonna wait till their 30s?

Not only does the Sopranos share a ton of its cast with Ferrara films, but it has an episode (the one with Paulie and the Virgin Mary) which serves as one big reference to Bad Lieutenant.

But did you know Lou Doillon (Charlotte's stepsis) is in a Ferrara film???

Evil does not exist (2024) so no.

Sufficiently deeply rooted beliefs cannot be acted against as they are the preconditions of acting at all.

I kind of agree, but I think that it's largely because we're in an age where we're too obsessed with interrogating norms around sex. I feel like at least generally speaking, in better time / setting it'd have the value that you'd be able to capture all the kinds of shit that Jerry did with it while there'd be basically be no chance of shit like the Channel 5 guy did falling under it.

It's not unless you're a zoomer Redditor. Some women like older men, including sexually, it's a preference. And most men like younger women, so it works out when you find a woman who wants an old man. Happens with gays all the time too, a lot of them got a GILF fetish.
