I still wonder what life he must've led up until Blackcoat's Daughter because he didn't start taking the film industry seriously as a career path until he was already in his 40s, all he did before was some very minor acting and writing in the 2000s and early 2010s. It does make me wonder if he had been at this when he was younger if his output could've been even better. I don't think his movies are as bad as /tv/ in general but Blackcoat still hasn't been topped as far as I'm concerned.

For the anon that wanted a Christmas zombie movie, here, have a zom-com...scuse me, cadaver-com. Stupid but moderately funny, done in a psuedo-grindhouse style with the fake film grain. (some after-credits scenes)
>>
>>216541281
Going by VHS it'll be kinda half-baked, more than a little self indulgent bordering on obnoxious, but with some excellent moments that makes it worth it
Should watch Yule Log tonight as I've been putting it off
>>
What I like about the Argento movies that I've watched so far since I saw Suspiria last week is how they feel honest horror movies. They're suspenseful hut they don't rely on cheap tricks like a very slow moving camera scanning a room, or fakeout jumpscares etc. You are always kind of informed of the murderer before

It's like the Hitchcock trick where suspense is driven when the audience knows something the characters don't, we already know a killer is lurking when the main character is unaware and that creates discomfort that I like instead of just jumpscares which turn me off horror because I can't stand them on a physical level

Just finished. At the end of WW2, a mother and teen daughter run their hotel while the father is away at war. The guests are aggressive and weird. Unexpectedly the mother dies in an accident and the daughter is left to run the place alone, and things get unpleasant. Refreshing to see a.vimtage Italian horror that wasn't a giallo or balls to the wall crazy, this is a pretty straightforward and stressful movie. The very pretty lead actress is just taking shit from everyone the whole movie and you empathize with her feeling constantly under threatened and harassed. Builds up to a great climax and a dark final note. Good and not fun.

Just finished. A "Japanese Giallo" according to the title credits, from a Jap director whose speciality is faux grindhouse tributes to old exploitation flicks. This is not a giallo AT ALL, there's no mystery and the whole thing is from the "killer's" pov. There's a Taxi Driver whose wife was murdered in front of him by a masked killer who then killed himself, and now he drives the streets searching for the perfect woman to do the same thing with himself. There's not much happening here, we spend most of the movie hanging with our morose protag as he smokes, drives, and soliloquizes... sound familiar? The movie shamelessly wears its main influence on its sleeve, even recreating the "you talking to me?" scene. And in the end he ends up in an unexpected life or death situation contrary to his actual intent and comes out looking the hero. What gets added that wasn't in Scorsese's original is a fucking ton of meaningless nude fantasy scenes with AV actresses (who all look fantastic, btw.) There's a hilarious out of nowhere twist at the end. The movie is imaginatively lit but cheap looking. Pretty much a slog, but I'm glad I saw it, it wasn't that easy to find.

>Awards Season is officially upon us and the early contest of The New York Film Critics Circle, the British Independent Film Awards, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, the National Board of Review winners, AFI, and the Critics Choice nominations have all been published, discussed, and debated. And after that first rush for prizes, we find Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another is safely positioned as the favorite for Best Picture. This season, the Revolutionary father-daughter misadventure has already taken the top prize at the National Board of Review, the Gotham Awards, and the New York Film Critics Circle, and Los Angeles Film Critics Circle.

>However it is Ryan Coogler’s vampire tale Sinners that top our Awards Leaderboard for this first update. With a rash of wins at Washington Area Film Critics, and the African American Film Critics Association the film has catapulted above the Best Picture frontrunner cementing its claim for a possible upset. We will likely have a very different list when we update again, but the season has begun, and we are more than ready to dive in. Which one of these early wins will matter in the long run? Like our leaderboard, it is all still very much up in the air, but we will be here each week to keep you up to date. So bookmark this page, to stay in the know on which films take home the most prizes.

I don't think he ever suggested he'd be doing anything different. Only other project I remember getting mentioned was something about a knight.
>>
>>216550711
>Robert Eggers, known for The Witch and The Northman, has a medieval film project tentatively titled "The Knight" where the script is complete, potentially adapting French medieval epics like The Song of Roland, though its production status is uncertain as he juggles other projects (a Western, a Rasputin series/film). It's an anticipated project for fans of his historically-focused, folkloric style, following his successful Viking saga The Northman.
Key Details:
Title: The Knight (working title).
Genre: Medieval epic, fairytale, historical drama.
Source Material: Speculated to be inspired by medieval French poems like The Song of Roland, focusing on themes of chivalry, faith, and hubris.
Status: The script is finished, but it's one of several projects Eggers is developing, including a Western and a Rasputin story.
Director's Style: Expect historical authenticity, folklore, and deep character study, similar to his previous works.

>tfw catholic
This movie is a wild trip because they did research and therefore a couple wild heresies
Jehovah's Witnesses think we're the devil but a lot of the structures and basics are the same because we're using a similar source (different bibles slightly, but still close enough you get basically the same hierarchy as most groups, like how the Mormon hierarchy is basically the same as the RCC's, despite hating us too)
Towards the end I was getting kind of offended for JWs not getting credit for the set up because they're the ones who hew most closely to the bible on a lot of that stuff... The movie very clearly knows the bible, but it doesn't seem to realise Catholics have been inserting off book lore for thousands of generations.
It's got this weird protestant brained shit where the idea that maybe the bible isn't the best place to start doing research hasn't occurred to them, and consequently gets as wild as the Jehovah's Witnesses arguing that everyone else mistranslated cross as cross, when Jesus obviously died on a stick not a cross
I think if you're deep Catholic or JW the movie is going to be even more WTF for you, because the movie cannot tell the different lore apart

I have to plug in all the drives every couple of weeks to spin them for a while so the internals don't seize up, as they aren't SSDs, so if I just leave them sitting there I'll plug them in one day and they simply won't work.

Now I'm getting nervous that the older drives are going to start dying, so I need to get backups for them... It's a never ending cycle caused by our government being over reaching cunts.

Not only that, but our government is now 99% composed of pic related, and those fuckers HATE freedom, so I'm pretty sure the VPN ban will actually go into place and we'll all be fucked here.

I'm predicting the sequel is going to make 60% max of what the first years made and they're going to cancel the 3rd

And that's not even factoring in that the black kween director of the megaflop The Marvels who proves hollywood is definitely an industry you can only fail upwards in is directing this sequel

life is a treadmill, and the whole world is set up so that we can't have nice things & there's fun allowed.

Even without the threat of government censorship and age verification, corporations are just as bad if not worse where they have to stick 3 to 4 different warnings on TV shows from 20 years ago, and then pull episode after episode, sometimes entire seasons, sometimes the entire show. You have one company buying out another, licensing rights disappearing into legal purgatory, AI slop being used to change aspect ratios or instead of actual restoration.

I even starting downloading porn, I don't even watch porn anymore and it's like old 1970s plot-heavy French porn i stumbled upon where everyone is older and hairy but I still gotta have it cause it'll be gone one day.

>Boutique labels existing is probably the main thing that keeps film preservation going
And yet they routinely limit their releases to a few thousand physical copies while being stingy about streaming rights. They don't want to promote these movies, they want to flip a buck, primarily by creating a collector culture where you feel like you have to pay top dollar for even the shittiest films ever made.

They do great quality restorations for sure, but they pick out a bunch of shit movies to sell you for $20+ a flick, while they do nothing about mainstream studios sitting on classic films

While we're on the whole film preservation thing, it's amazing to me that virtually everything any director shat onto film is considered some sacred art that needs to be preserved until the end of time, when 99% of movies coming out now direct-to-streaming digital with the same low budgets are just ignored entirely
>>
>>216574179
Broadly speaking, digital doesn't need "preservation", just don't delete it. Film physically deteriorates and will just disappear. I think something like 90% of silent era movies were lost forever because nobody took care of them.
>>
>>216574179
to be fair, it took like 100x more effort to make most of those films and they had way bigger budgets. just paying for the film would have been expensive.
>>
>>216574211
>Broadly speaking, digital doesn't need "preservation", just don't delete it.
Are you gonna watch them?

I took a shit this morning. If I recorded it on film, would you spend your life savings to preserve the event?
>>
>>216574253
I had a dream last night that there was this artist who made elaborate, intricate canvas painting using his own feces because he had some health condition that made his shit really smeary, and there were there two art curators who made him a celebrated commended artist. They were out and about and the guy had to take a shit and went in the bathroom, and then after him some kid went in with his dad and got grossed out because the toilet was all covered in shit. The art guys look at the artist and he's silently sobbing to himself, ashamed, so they go into the stall and clean up the mess for him, crying themselves.
It was very moving. Thanks, I didn't think I'd have a reason to tell anybody about that, kek

That's how film preservation started. "Just don't throw away those reels." Most didn't matter at the time, and now there's an audience for them.

Vinegar Syndrome put out a 4K of The Beastmaster, and they had to rely on an intermediate copy because the original camera negative couldn't be found. This movie was shown in movie theaters across the country and had a significant cultural impact, being shown on HBO for most Anons' childhoods, and they couldn't locate the actual film it was shot on because it wasn't deemed important enough to hang onto. Nobody gives a shit until a culture of giving a shit is established, which becomes more important than the movies themselves.
>>
>>216574440

I've seen so many shitty found footages lately I think my bar has just lowered, but Last Radio Call was ok. Better than MK.exe or whatever for sure.
It was basically another Grave Encounters though, made no sense. I liked the alcoholic MC in her underwear.
This guy should make a whole film with the cop shtick, since there wasn't that much of it.

I didn't like this one, had potential but meh, kinda like his other movie, deadware

It always makes me appreciate how hard it is to make a decent film. There's thousands of them, all with budgets not much different to BWP or Paranormal Activity.
They're always so stuffed with random lore. Fine sure have the local mystic or professor dropping demon knowledge, but less is more.

I think Ed Wood made me realize early on how difficult it is making even the worst little piece of shit movie, and now that I've been in a couple myself, I can verify that it's a huge amount of effort. You've got actors who flake, getting everybody in the same place at the same time, keeping everyone fed, fighting the elements, people getting along, etc.editings the easy part and even that's a slog.

Jesus christ, they're such trembling vaginas that they can't even commit to the lame bit.

Who is desperate enough to watch the shitty telesync instead of waiting or just seeing it in theaters?

As the Official FF Chad Of 4Chan, I've seen the absolute worst that'll make you realize god isn't real because no loving god would allow anyone to make a movie that fucking atrocious for others to see.

I'll need opinions from /hor/bros to see if this is worse watching or not. The decision to make it into "Dexter meets Venom" seems pretty gay to me desu but maybe it'll be good.

Why yes there's a Christmas FF movie. Why no it's not horror at all. Why yes I made this post just to get us back to page 1.

No problem. Always good to be watching FF, even if it turns out to be shit.

If it's mediocre stuff, I don't mind watching a telesync, but if it's decent I'd rather wait for a proper rip

Just finished. I love Junji Ito, and had a lot of fun with this, even though something about his work just never translates no matter how many times they try. The Thing That Drifted Ashore is one of his best stories imo and the adaptation here totally underwhelms. This series does best when it's leaning into his work's comedy, and I could've done with more of the siblings from episode 1. It says something that this came and went with no buzz, but I hope Netflix doesn't give up on him. Same as Poe or Lovecraft, his premises are so strong that I can see adaptors coming back to them for decades.

I don't like his work. His mangas are weird for the sake of being weird. Never liked them.

Any favorite Christmas horror movies that aren't the popular ones?

>this came and went with no buzz
I don't think that's true, if anything it was quite successful. People complain about the animation quality (ok sure), and it doesn't reach anywhere near the heights of his manga, but I really liked both series. There's another one called Collection - check it out if you haven't already.
It's just nice to see his stories in another format.

Oh - and fyi, a third season has already been announced. It's called Crimson and hard to say but it might happen 2026. They might have announced it before the check even cleared.

I feel like you should take another swing at him. Some of his work like Gyo or perhaps Hanging Balloons is surreal, but most are just unique body horror ideas.
I'd recommend reading The Long Dream, as a classic cool lovecraftian idea. His adaption of Frankenstein is very straight forward.

Nah, I don't go to theaters anymore, but I haven't watched a telesync for almost 20 years either. Go to the theater or wait for a decent release.
