I rewatched Terrifier 3 last night and was surprised at how good it was. I love that its become an epic fight of good vs. evil with Sienna being a literal angelic figure and her chopping up that fucking demonic bitch was so satisfying. I liked almost all the characters- the ones you're supposed to care about anyway. New series ranking is 3>2>AHE>1
>>
Kinki? more like Kinkino
>>
>>216585566
True nuke 3 pilled.
Terrifier 3 is a good center point between 1 and 2, just has a smoother arc to it. You could argue that it has too many sideplots that is just Art killing unimportant characters, but none of them are boring.
And yeah the action at the end is really well done. Even earlier like when he's fucking up the cops, the impact of the violence is kino.
3 > 1 > AHE/2 for me (the lighting in 2 pisses me off)
>>
Im watching this and it seems it was made for blind people causes half the dialog is the characters literally descriving what they are seeing, its so repetitive. Is this because of zoomers, netflix or do young people act like this because of youtube and streamers now? You need some silence in horror movies.

This is the future that awaits us if theaters die out I'm afraid:
>In today’s fast-paced world, where multitasking is the norm and undivided attention is an endangered species, Netflix has decided to double down on catering to our collective distraction. According to reports, Netflix execs are urging screenwriters to have characters announce their actions out loud — presumably for the benefit of viewers who are too busy doomscrolling or folding laundry to actually watch the show they’ve queued up. Because why should you watch a movie when you can half-listen to it, right?

>Such slipshod filmmaking works for the streaming model, since audiences at home are often barely paying attention. Several screenwriters who’ve worked for the streamer told me a common note from company executives is “have this character announce what they’re doing so that viewers who have this program on in the background can follow along.” (“We spent a day together,” Lohan tells her lover, James, in Irish Wish. “I admit it was a beautiful day filled with dramatic vistas and romantic rain, but that doesn’t give you the right to question my life choices. Tomorrow I’m marrying Paul Kennedy.” “Fine,” he responds. “That will be the last you see of me because after this job is over I’m off to Bolivia to photograph an endangered tree lizard.”)

>One tag among Netflix’s thirty-six thousand microgenres offers a suitable name for this kind of dreck: “casual viewing.” Usually reserved for breezy network sitcoms, reality television, and nature documentaries, the category describes much of Netflix’s film catalog—movies that go down best when you’re not paying attention, or as the Hollywood Reporter recently described Atlas, a 2024 sci-fi film starring Jennifer Lopez, “another Netflix movie made to half-watch while doing laundry.” A high-gloss product that dissolves into air. Tide Pod cinema.
>>
>>216586436
Bleak. Paying attention to the smaller details and lines of dialog in movies is essentially critical to the powerful moments. You can't get the highs without it, you'll never be surprised by the twist or intrigued by the mystery. All that's left is set pieces that could be copy pasted into any film, or watched on social media in 5 minute chunks.

Maybe it'll make more sense after I watch it again, but were the ghost of the kid who hung himself and then presumably what was his mother ghost trying to prevent the co-worker woman from driving to the ritual stone to sacrifice the protagonist?or maybe they wanted to make him crazy like others because they harvest life energy for themselves that way? The ghost mom materializes in front of their car in the tunnel but then the ghost kid shows up behind them looking they're trapped with the only way being forward towards the sacrificial rock in the mountains
>>

>>
the most scary movie according to you?
>>
>>216586639
I 100% agree. If I want some white noise in the background I would personally just put on a podcast since it's a purely auditory experience. Why put on a movie or show if you aren't going to pay attention? At least if you actually take this hobby seriously, but sadly the audience that streamers are targeting is the casual majority who actually want to consume their content that way so we'll just get dragged along with them if we don't just stick to the older stuff exclusively.
>>
>>216586901
Honestly didn't make much sense to me. The ghosts fucked that kid with the cats up seemingly for fun, and the ending showed the entity was an abomination of the bad sort. So I don't know that they were good given how many people were dying all over the place. Maybe they started out like the mother/child, and then over time become trapped souls.

Watch all the basic shit of each subgenre. There's haunted houses, zombies, satanism, etc. Pick a place first. There's only so many basic horror films that try to cover a lot of bases at once.
>>216587372
Also Roko's basilisk which has a lot to do with it.
>>
>>216587327
>I definitely don't like the whole supernatural/monsters/witches/aliens/other ungodly creatures trope
But then you're just kind of left with only just serial killers, man being the most dangerous beat in the animal kingdom and all that, which is also ungodly.

and even a lot of classic serial killer movies end up turning into supernatural shlock.

Personally I mostly just watch horror movies as creature features, whether it's a space alien or mutated animal or some sort of demon with a physical body.

are you some sort of weird ultra Christian or something? most horror movies are about the forces of good prevailing over evil anyways.
>>
>>216587327
I mean that doesn't leave much. Did you like Cure or is that too supernatural?
>>
>>216587536
>>216587540
I mean it depends
I liked the Cure and I also liked The Thing which obviously fits the description I provided to a T, but generally whenever I see some zombies or aliens and shit I just roll my eyes
I guess I'm more attracted by the thriler part rather the horror part, suspense and not knowing what will happen next or when reality and fiction blend and it's hard to tell them apart but something's still off
>>
>>216587637
How is the Thing not an ungodly creature? You're also basically just asking for psychological horror, no? Sure you could find something if you just dug around for a bit. Could also try Letterboxd.

Naked Lunch.
It's basically just about being a closeted gay man and drug addict in the 1950s and things quickly devolve into conspiratorial paranoia about a powdered pesticide that the main character uses as both a exterminator and a drug user, its origins and uses, the people around him being double agents and double crossing each other, not knowing what's real from one moment to the next especially in the editing of the movie.

You wanna talk creature feature too? The talking horny typewriter bugs are some of the most inventive and gross-looking creatures of any movie. kiki in the parrot cage is also very Cronenberg.

Oh and the protagonist is the same actor as Robocop, there's a fun fact.
>>

Just finished. Shining in IMAX. I had plans for a 7pm movie and had a few hours to kill, and lo and behold this was showing at 3. Like slipping into a warm bath. This was probably my 5th thing seeing it theatrically, and my 30th time overall. I didn't have to pay attention at all, feel like I know the thing backward and forwards. The image was so clear I could notice this novel in the Torrance apartment that I never did before.

Aside from Cure in the same vein as far as regular human killers go:
>Psycho (the sequels are surprisingly not shit either)
>Peeping Tom
>Manhunter (Red Dragon sticks closer to the book but is worse off for it and Hannibal isn't very good either and Hannibal Rising is complete ass)
>Silence of the Lambs
>Se7en
>Zodiac
>Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
>Dressed to Kill
>I Saw the Devil
>The Cremator
>Most gialli really, but the best ones are Argento's Animal trilogy, Deep Red, The Girl Who Knew Too Much, Don't Torture a Duckling, A Lizard in a Woman's Skin, Blood and Black Lace
>The Psychic is also very good but has minor supernatural elements like the protagonist seeing visions of murders. Phenomena is another supernatural giallo featuring a protagonist who can communicate with bugs

For more traditional slasher stuff without a supernatural killer:
>Halloween
>The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Part 1 & 2 (Part 2 shifts to comedy horror so I'd advise to stay away if you're more of a purist and don't enjoy genre hybrids)
>Friday the 13th Parts 1-5; Parts 6 and onward Jason becomes a zombie and Part 7 has him fighting against Carrie essentially
>Scream 1-4, although 3 is kind of bad it's still worth watching for retaining some of that late 90s/early 2000s vibes
>M3GAN (PG-13 sci-fi horror comedy)
>The Strangers

There's also nature horror that just has regular animals:
>The Birds
>Jaws
>Deep Blue Sea
>Piranha
>Grizzly
>Anaconda
>Alligator
>Snakes on a Plane

Other recs:
>10 Cloverfield Lane (a pretty good psychological horror movie and is nothing like the original which is a monster horror film with a giant invading alien creature wreacking havoc in NYC)
>Frankenstein + Bride of Frankenstein: classic sci-fi horror about a mad scientist playing at being god, nothing supernatural or outlandish unless you think sci-fi is inherently outlandish)
>The Conspiracy 2012
>The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
>The Invisible Man
>Hollow Man
>Black Swan
>The Neon Demon
>Split 2017

It's a psychological horror/thriller and these tend to be more slowburns in general which people who crave the constant thrills won't like, but yes it is a horror movie. It has suspenseful horror scenes and moments, but it isn't non-stop horror if that's what you want. The point of a psychological movie is to lean more into the subtle side rather than the visceral and is focused on trying to mentally disturb you with generally fewer conventional frights which if it did the setup properly and you're the kind of person who's susceptible to it should then be more effective as a result. Some people like that, some people don't.

>I thought most people did?
A lot of people think zombie movies are explicitly horror but they're not, think of Zombieland. It's a "horror comedy" where the comedy comes first, so it's not trying to be scary. Same with I Am Legend. It has tense thrilling sense and some horror moments, but it's not an outright horror movie, it doesn't even hint at that really. It's more sci-fi pandemic action.
https://rateyourmusic.com/film/i-am-legend/

tl;dr zombie typically means horror but can now be applied to other genres more broadly.
>>
The Sixth Sense also isn't horror broadly, it's more a thriller/drama.
https://rateyourmusic.com/film/the-sixth-sense/

I guess Wikipedia counts anything even if it's remotely scary or hints at horror.
>>
>>216593138
World War Z is like that. Yeah it has zombies, but there's basically no threat or horror in that film. Plus the CGI makes it extra not-scary.
>>
>>216593402
Exactly, yeah.
https://rateyourmusic.com/film/world-war-z/

Has more horror than I Am Legend, but not enough to make it a actual horror. It's just action slop with zombies. I wouldn't necessarily call Resident Evil 5 a horror game.

I mean you're using RateYourMusic instead of coming up with your own arguments that's how little you've thought about this topic if you're even capable of such a thing, but all three movies have horror scenes in them and you even admit as much yourself. Nobody has ever claimed they were pure horror movies and a film being more of one genre than another doesn't necessarily mean said film doesn't belong to the other genre at all whether it's horror or action or comedy or thriller. It's been a while since I saw I Am Legend but I don't recall it being that much more action than horror regardless.
>>216593428
>Has more horror than I Am Legend, but not enough to make it a actual horror.
Why don't you explain what you consider to be a sufficient amount of horror that would make a movie qualify then? It should be easy enough to provide a number since you seem to count them mentally in your head whenever you watch a movie. Prove you actually understand the topic as much as you think you do instead of just providing vague statements.

Finished a while ago. No idea what compelled them to take the approach they did. The first two thirds or so what they're doing is annoying but works well enough. But then there's a reveal that changes the whole concept imo and wrecks everything. Spoiler I saw someone saying this was Dexter meets Venom and that's not inaccurate. Billy has another personality that we hear as a voice in his head that advises him and seems to have a sixth sense for smelling out evildoers. I can deal with that though by the halfway point I was damn sick of it. Then we find out it's not a split personality, he's carrying the fucking SOUL of the guy who killed his parents within him, and it can show him visions of them doing their past evil deeds as well as supernaturally being aware of their current actions. This takes Billy from being a misguided psycho vigilante with great intuition to being functionally a superhero. And in the finale they break his plot armor simply so Billy can get 86ed and his love interest can become possessed by him, setting up a sequel. I don't want it, by the end of this movie I was impatient for it to be over.. What a bizarre, dumb, irritating movie. The whole Nazi thing feels shoehorned in from another movie and like it was designed at the script level to become the viral thing it ended up. Left a bad taste in my mouth. Didn't like this.

Just finished. Two years from now expect a lot of girls to discover this on streaming and start saying it's their favorite movie. Imagine your garden variety Neil Gaiman obsessed YA author being given full creative control over a reimagining of The Professional. A weird, weird movie that I wasn't feeling at first but eventually won me over. The parents of a little girl in NY get killed and she hires the vaguely European hitman who lives across the hall from her take out the killer. They develop a father/daughter relationship and an all out siege is organized on their apartment. Sound familiar? Major difference is the killer is a giant man-eating bunny that lives under her bed. The first third is essentially a silent movie. Mads is capable of anything the guy is magnificent here. If you haven't seen it, you should see Men & Chicken to see how well he can play gross retarded weirdo too. This movie goes all in on the Jeunet & Caro Amelie aesthetic for some reason, to the point the end credits call it "un film de Bryan Fuller". For Siggy fans this is a must watch, it's the best she's looked since Galaxy Quest. I thought the little girl was excellent and hope she keeps acting. Trigger warning that there's a guy who's been showing up in everything that I know some people are sick of seeing (but who i still like): David Dastmalchian.

Umezu was Ito's biggest influence and he clearly draws a lot from his style but I shouldn't say he's just a ripoff (just shitposting )I think Ito found his own style. But if you look at Umezu and don't know who he is you will probably think it's Ito.

For me personally, as someone who's not much into the whole found footage genre, these low budget flicks were more entertaining and scarrier than anything produced since the original Blair Witch was released. Also, no reaction when seeing the neanderthal pop up in the tin shack. It's like he just saw a rat and casually walked away. It doesn't seem like he's feeling any tension or fear at all. Just finished. Cute horror comedy about a woman who marries a rich guy during his funeral and how the corpse has an elaborate scheme in place to take out all the folks trying to steal his fortune from her. It's in the style of the "sick humor" aesthetic of the 60s, like one of the schemers gets blown up and all that's left is his foot, which they give its own burial plot, so the gravedigger says "I've heard of having one foot in the grave before but this is ridiculous!", kek
Stella Stevens is delectable, and there's an actress who plays a bargirl that hasn't been in anything else who looks delicious as well. Kind of fuddy-duddy in a loveable way.

been reading the book (not finished it yet) and i think all of the ghosts are related to the masshiro-sama game the ghosts are chasing after potential victims but they aren't allowed to touch whoever they're chasing they are, however, allowed to block off their escape so that masshiro-sama can catch them and demand a sacrifice
masshiro-sama is the hand deity
the ghosts weren't trying to prevent the co-worker woman from escaping/going to the shrine, they were trying to hound the man to have him give up a sacrifice for masshiro-sama

as an aside the persimmon guy never gave up a sacrifice so he was most likely trying to trick a woman into coming to the rock so he could sacrifice her to get his mother back
and in the book there is no time-limit on when you're supposed to give the substitute in the kid's game, just that if you don't give one (or don't want to give one) "something bad" will happen to you

Man... Deathstalker was one of those films where it could have been so much better without that much effort.
I get it was probably made on a shoestring budget but that lack of extras was painful. It's like Morrowind or something where you're supposedly walking around a massive city and there's 3 NPCs that live there. Troma films used to have seemingly hundreds of them. The originals had great scenes of wild taverns with topless wenches and pigmen everywhere.
And on that topic this was like not even PG when it came to sex, this was like a fantasy world where human males and females finding each other attractive isn't a concept. Fucking weird sexual repression to be honest.
What else. Colour grading was often too much. Patton Oswalt was a terrible choice for a voice actor and the midget he played could barely move his mask. They should have scrapped his paycheck and paid for 13 larpers for the extras this film needed. There were also too many Power Ranger villains and it should have had an environmental hazard like a rope bridge over a chasm or whatever.
Lots of "power rangers meets gorefest" stuff though if you were a fan of Psycho Goreman. Humour was also improved from that.

What do we think of the rejected Halloween 4 scripts?

>The original Dennis Etchison version (author of Halloween 3 and 4's novelizations), which pitted teenage Tommy Doyle and Lindsey Wallace against "The Spectre", which is a ghostly incarnation of Michael Myers fuelled by Haddonfield's repression of Halloween night 1978. Carpenter and Hill were back to produce and it was Akkad's refusal (citing it as "too cerebral") that made them finally give up and sell their share of the IP.
>Daniel Kenney and Marc Allyn Medina's draft, which featured Michael stalking a now-married Laurie Strode through late '80s Chicago. Featured Doctor Loomis and proto-Rachel who gets her arm smashed into a garbage disposal. Michael actually dies, exploding into flames after falling into a swimming pool that's been electrified by a power line that fell into it (thanks to Doctor Loomis crashing his car into a utility pole after failing to notice that Michael severed his brake lines). Also notably featured a weird meta gag with Michael plowing his car into a crowd of people lining up to see Halloween 3. This script was apparently enthusiastically approved by Akkad but scrapped when Jamie Lee Curtis expressed no interest in coming back to the series.
>Shem Bitterman's draft, which largely served as the basis for the final filmed version - Michael pursues proto-Jamie ("Amanda Hatch" at this point), with her seeing him as just being misunderstood. Michael's big aim in this one is to use Amanda to recreate Judith's final moments for some reason. Has Loomis killed off at the end with the big reveal being Michael's face has somehow recovered from his burns but has the face of a small child
>>

Just finished. BORING melodramatic pink film about a rich businessman's daughter behind held for ransom by someone in a novelty sumo wrestler sumo costume wearing a gas mask. They also have a voice changer that makes them sound like a little girl. That's where the cool ideas end, the dad argues with his superiors, there are softcore sex scenes, we find out who the kidnapper is, it's over. Spoiler it was the guy's secretary who's jealous he works too much and is still in love with his dead wife. The businessman kills himself by jumping from his office window, the secretary and daughter become a couple, and apparently the daughter keeps her chained up in the office basement as a willing sex slave. Huh?. Started my favorite AV actress who moonlights in normal stuff, Asami Sugiura.

The Etchison script pretty much takes the series into Nightmare on Elm Street ripoff territory. From memory there was also some shit about ghost-Michael spawning out of a pumpkin patch on the edge of town and the final act has him growing ten feet tall after Sherrif Brackett and his squad unload on him
>>
>>216622120
oh so they're separate scripts. desu ghost michael does sound cool and I'm sure I'd have enjoyed it. I mean what's scarier than michael. to me, ghosts, that's about it. so ghost michael should be the scariest concept there is.
>>
>>216622151
Oh right, yeah sorry, all three were different scripts that had nothing to do with each other. Nothing from the Etchinson one was used and the only thing from the Kenney/Medina one that was kept was that it had early versions of Rachel (who was Laurie's sister-in-law) and Jamie.

Also I believe that Carpenter was talking to Joe Dante about directing the Etchinson one before it fell apart.

is the director an antisemite? Why is there only one white people killing scene?

You forgot to mention; not woke at all. Not that this director is that kind of filmmaker (even though he is clearly a libtard from Canada), but this didn't even have a CURRENT YEAR cast.

They introduce a ridiculous new plot element to it where just by looking at people he can see every evil thing they've ever done The Dead Zone style. So he gets introduced to this woman at a hockey game and sees her using a black woman ties to a chair for target practice. it's ridiculous, stupid, and turns him into a literal superhero.

I think I'm done with horror for a while..is this the worst year ever in the history of cinema for the genre?
>>
>>216629791
This year was way better than most years of the 2010s for horror.

This is exactly why I don't watch TV shows. The more popular the show is, the more incentive they have to keep dragging the story out. It makes no sense for mystery based horror.
>>
>>216627993
Yeah, I mean it had a lot of positive stuff in it. The lead was a great as Deathstalker. Most of the jokes worked, most of the outfits were cool, some cool matte painting-esque scenes, cgi was used tastefully, by the end it even felt like it had earned the camaraderie.
Idk why but some films it's easier to talk about what's wrong with it than the opposite.
>>
>>216629791
2020 wasn't great either. I mean it had great sleepers like The Last Matinee, Possessor, History of the Occult. But there was no bigger budget film approaching kino.

Yes, they all have a small minority that's great & shit and then the rest fall in-between. The only difference between now and pre-streaming is that everything has been curated from those days, while you have knowledge and access to everything that comes out now.

>>216634170
ok sure but 1979 had Alien. The Brood, Nosferatu, Phantasm, Zombi 2, Tourist Trap, Don't Go In The House, and Salemt's Lot.
I'd watch any of those compared to uhh Until Dawn or Sinners or Weapons.
>>
>>216635340
You can't just compare the very top of one against not the top of the others. You must compare the entire catalog from the year. 1979 has been curated throughout time to erase or very much hide the bottom half. Again, unlike today, where you can simply go to streaming sites and find all movies released this year.
>>
>>216635459
I'm comparing the top of 1979 to what people are saying are the top of this year. What others would match them from this year?
>>
bakin
>>
>>216635511
It doesn't matter what would match them. You're either retarded or arguing in bad faith. Which is it?
