I think the only explanation is that the show was envisioned as being more of an ensemble piece spread across the multiple characters before Vince let his Rhea obsession take over. Look at what we know of the other characters>Diabetes, refusing to mourn a world that gave him nothing, seizing the opportunity to have everything>Lakshmi, living in a wilful delusion, trying to pretend it never happened>the mexican teen who's gone full quisling mode and wants to join the plurb because she misses her familyall of these present opportunities for interesting compelling character development and storytelling. You can do a lot with these premises. And then you come to Carol>she is a bit grumpy and cantankerousThere's no reason for her to be the focal point. There's nothing there. What do we even know about her? She was a romance novelist, but that has yet to become relevant in any way. She is mildly annoyed about the almost entire eradication of what could be considered the human race. She's nothing, she's so much less than any of the other characters we've seen. It only makes sense if it was intended to be something made of many interlocking parts, but then Vince decided only one of the parts actually mattered, so we end up with a character smeared across a full season of 10 episodes when she was only ever meant to be a fifth or a sixth of it.

Is anyone else feeling dread about just how many people are being filtered by this show? It's not even amazing, it's not high art but it's the best thing on TV right now and I enjoy even the ""dull"" moments because ermm Carol is awesome.
