You just know there's at least one dude in the fire tribe who really wanted to fuck Varang and was simping extra hard all day every day. And then this sky person dude shows up and gets to fuck her within half an hour and becomes her mate and co-leader of the tribe and starts ordering you around.

Just realised how much Lo'ak's arc perfectly follows Jake's own and I kneel before Cameron
>Seen as the lesser version of his older brother
>His brother dies and he is made to shoulder the burden of having to live up to everyone's expectations as the replacement
>He struggles to fit in with his clan and people, seen as an outsider
>His outcast status leads to him taming a fierce creature and bonding with it when nobody else could, which turns the tide of battle against the RDA
>Though his tribe distrusts him, a qt princess sees his hidden quality and supports him, convincing her family to give him a chance
>He proves himself worthy and is accepted by his family and clan

Do you understand how clones are made? The are just human’s with corrupted dna to have the phenotypes of Navi. You can’t make life out of nothing. Even Aywa has to recycle every living creature that dies into something new.

>I would do anything for Varang
Anything? That you'd bathe yourself in oil like Denethor from LOTR, let Varang engulf you in flames with a fire arrow like a worthless peon or a chess piece to be removed to further her sick twisted ploys, and kamikaze headlong for an enemy ship just so she can snort at how pathetic you are? Just so the White man Quaritch, and ultimately not you, could pound senselessly her cat hole and make litters of half-breed children to the point it's enough to sustain the significant Mangkwan losses? While smoke slithers your charred corpse, which serves as nothing but as carrion for predatory birds to maintain the Pandoran life cycle as the Great Mother Eywa intended, next to the mountains of mangled corpses of other pitiful simps alike yourselves?
Why are simps like this?

>>
Just watched the movie - pretty good, Quaritch and Varang were the best part and I hope they have some kinda happy ending together. It's a pretty cold take, but I don't like Spider and his storyline, the whole character feels like the typical annoying kid character despite of him being too old for that and every time he is on screen you just want the movie to get back to the other more interesting characters. The whole fungi thing also throws up some weird questions about the world - Is world really organically interconnected or does the real original nature of the planet just suffer from a horrific fungi infection? Also did kinda a double take at the end where they meet with the dead and they are happily like
>Now you are one of us and will be with Eywa forever.
...is that good thing?

Beyond that, also not a huge fan of the whales being a focus again, so the final stakes and battle were somewhat similar to the last movie. I honestly wouldn't have minded if just made up a new crazy discovery somewhere else, that is even more valuable (like in the ash lands by the volcano). But it was cool that Jake got Toruk again. I hoped those predator-cat like aliens from the first movie would also join in. Finally, they could make an entire horror movie about those squid things, the way they dragged themselves across the ship to search for humans... (also again, so whatever Eywa is can just remote control animals? ...Are the Navi immune to that? Do they get influenced the whole time in some way?).
>>
>>216757207
Absolutely. After a time jump kiri will lead the story. Might be made tsahik in ronal’s absence. Quarich will still be with varang but he may or may not stay allies with the humans. Thinking they’ll do a Vader with him.
>>
Kinda wish we got more Tonawari. He’s a massive fucking bro that should have honestly never let the Sullys into his tribe but is too good of a dude to turn away a family in need. So bizarre that he loses his wife and son and we get zero follow up. Instead we focus on fucking spider being accepted despite the fact that 90% of what goes wrong in these movies are because of him.

>>
>>216757925
The fungus and the immortality whale juice are both really absurd when you consider the Human faction has mastered genetic replication. They should be able to synthesize both from its genetics alone. Both of the "we gotta hunt the whales to extinction" and "we gotta kidnap this kid" plotlines fall flat just by the basic premise of "we replicated this alien species' biology and are now piloting them around".
>>
>>216758027
Just because they have mastered gene manipulation with human genes doesn't mean they can do that with the genes of other species, let alone alien species.
>>
>>216758097
But they did in the very first movie. Genes just code for proteins which then result in biological chemistry. It may not be instantaneous, but once you have the whale's DNA for example you have the machinery that produces the immortality juice right there. It's not magic.
If you can replicate the smurf's biology, you can replicate everything else. The end goal isn't to produce a whale clone (you can), it's just to replicate the biology that makes the immortality juice. It's actually LESS rare and valuable than the unobtanium.
>>
Eywa should just intervene via forced evolution such that when a Tulkun dies it triggers the release of a hormone that neutralized amrita in the body.
>>
>>216758122
Actually I remember an interview where Cameron said humans can't synthesize it and we will find out why. Fucking liar. Either they cut that scene or it was meant for a later movie.
>>
>>216758158
He was just bullshitting after the fact. The reality is it's a plot hole, and the whole thing is to wag a finger at whaling which is already illegal in the vast majority of countries. And Japan will never give it up for the same reason Alaskan natives won't - they whale for food, not oil.
>>
For how these movies are based on the deep bond to all living things the Na'vi have and what a big deal they made out of bonding just with one of the wyverns in the previous movies, they sure degraded all the "basic mounts" down to
>Mine died, oh well, let me just summon a new one.
I think the only who showed any actual care for her wyvern was Neytiri in the final battle. Jake didn't even care about what was going on with Toruk after they fell.
>>
>>216758209
I noticed this as well. The whole thing is an environmentalist isekai that reveals what they truly care about: an ecology that serves their interests and theirs alone.

>>
>>216758233
Meanwhile Varang's wyvern is still fine by the end of the movie. Not a good look for the blue side.
>>
>>216757494
It's very unrealistic that they just get away with it in a primitive tribe without anything bad happening. In ancient times the failed mate would probably just attack and try to steal her back. You'd probably have to leave your tribe to avoid any consequences but your life is basically over anyways and you're going to have to leave and take a female from somewhere either way.
>>
We get two new tribes introduced and half the movie is water tribe rehash.
>>
>>216758209
Kiri cared about hers and hugged it. Jake cared, but wasn't in any kind of condition to go back and check on Toruk, who was fine and still fighting anyway. No one cares about the Ilus. They still care about the Tulkuns and those bond stronger.

I don't care that the final act is a remake of Way Of Water. I'm only mad that we got cucked out of seeing a volcano destruction flashback sequence. That was literally about 40% of my hype for the whole film. The skypeople landing in the forest was the best scene in Way Of Water and I was fully expecting another scene showing that level of calamity, but instead all we saw of the volcano was this one 3-second shot. FFS Cameron I wanted 3D pyroclastic flows.

You can't do much more with the Ash people until there's a timeskip. The wind traders said they don't want to take sides. It's not like they want to join in the final battle when they're so vulnerable.
>>
>>216758467
So then do a timeskip.

The fire tribe is also a disappointment. The only 'fire' theme they have going on is they are raiders and use fire weapons, and their home got wrecked by a volcano. They're not inventive or possessing any positive qualities of fire, they're just "evil" with a throwaway justification.
>>
>>216758290
Because Cameron enjoys working with her, simple as
>>
>deliberate shot of Quarich going barefoot like the first time we see him, signalling the heel turn
>he's still team human by the end
>blueballed for another 4 years
>>
>>216758515
I am sick of that trend that villains aren't allowed to be straight-up evil monster. There always has to be some tragic or sympathetic backstory or deeper reason for their actions or whatever that would make us in some way still like them. Fuck that. I am glad we finally have a bad side that are just cannibalistic, raiding assholes.
>>
I like how Lo’ak feels so responsible for his brothers death he was going to eat a bullet meanwhile Spyder is directly fucking responsible and not once does he show remorse for walking Quaritch through Na’vi 101 and leading to every single subsequent death
>>
>>216758571
"Positive" in this case doesn't necessarily mean "hidden good quality", it means "pro-adaptive". If you're going to do elemental theming, then fucking do it. "Oh wow, the fire tribe is inventive, that makes for a sinister villain and that explains why they are so interested in guns". Instead they like guns because they're a bunch of niggers with zero positive qualities.
>>
>>216758497

>>
>>216758350
Your life wouldn't be over. You'd just have to settle for a lower-status wife. Attacking him would be a stupid move if he's already won her over like in this movie. None of those tribesmen could offer anything close to the value Quaritch brought to her.

Why did no one figure out and confront Spider over his saving Quaritch, which was a major betrayal of the family?
They even had the perfect potential setup for it, when they're diving to the ship at the beginning. Someone could have noticed that Quaritch's body was missing there.
But no, that just completely get a pass now?
>>
>>216758705
They literally did. Did you miss their embrace of guns and then starting to live in the human city?
>>
>>216758722
Spider is painfully James Cameron and for as much as he works he’s also one of the most glaring weaknesses in these movies.
>>
>>216758722
Oh damn that's right. I wonder if that will be a point later on. If Neytiri finds out she will take the nice things back and kill him lol
>>
>>216757587
yeah there was nip action there
>>
>>216758687
I thought he was a total goner the way he spent most of the movie either being depressed or captured by the RDA and being progressively more injured as the action went on, also the way Lo'ak started to become a more capable successor to him. But I am glad they don't get rid of him, and how they don't cling to him as the main protagonist. I like that he can remain a core of the franchise but he doesn't have to behave in a generic "protagonist-y" role as he becomes more of a supportive figure for the younger characters. The stuff they do with him and Spider, or him and Neytiri, make him feel much more flawed and deep as a character compared to the first 2 films.

They should've went hard with the wind traders anyway, instead of only using them to introduce the ash people. Now that I think about it, with how much they went into the tribes the previous movies were about, there was actually surprisingly little about the ash people - like how they spend their days and what culture they have going on besides Varang's shaman stuff. They didn't even get a cool unique animal to them.

I liked the idea of and would have preferred the bullshit "leaked plot" where the movie ends with the humans on Pandora declaring independence from Earth. Setting up a future scenario where different factions of humans are fighting each other.
Instead the real ending is kind of like Way of Water's, where the humans merely lost some hardware and otherwise there's no real change to the status quo

I kinda just accept it because narratively she’s an anomaly anyway but I think a bigger reason why Kiri comes off so uncanny is that Sigourney Weaver can’t pull off the Na’vi accent. This might be looking too closely at something I’m just supposed to take as like spiritual shit but how does dying and going back to Eywa work? Neteyam asks how he dies so is the you that goes to Na’vi heaven based on when you last connected to the spirit tree like a file backup? Like would Kiri have been fucked because her seizures meant she wasn’t allowed to connect for a long ass time?
>>
>>216760014
Damn only $1.8B instead of $2.2B might as well shelve it and try to make Fantastic Four work again
>>
>>216760030
Yes I think it's exactly like a backup, I think that your consciousness gets "dumped" to Eywa when you connect and you're still alive in the spirit world and don't remember anything between when you last connected and when you died

Feel like there’s a lot of potential thematic depth there. Loved F&A but I think that’s been the biggest bummer. There’s still a ton of untapped elements to this universe and it’s not like I need the entire lore dump right away but F&A felt like it really drilled down into the characters but gave us a lot less worldbuilding this time.

They’re obviously going for a “he’s gone native” arc to parallel Jake but it’s also pretty easy to understand a logical argument for why he likes the Ash people. It’s shown time and time again at this point that the humans just aren’t capable of beating the cats. He’s now found a tribe of his own that he can control but with superior firepower and it visibly works as he fucking wrecks the entire flying force that Jake had amassed from all the tribes. I feel like more than finally “seeing” Pandora his arc might go the route of finally seeing how weak and useless humans actually are and he tried to become a Toruk Makto type of figure

I was one of those people that thought the first movie was overrated and wasn't excited for Way of Water. I was actually impressed by how much Way of Water surpassed my expectations and actually got me invested in where the series was going to go next.
What the fuck was this movie? The dialogue was total ass and the movie didn't even look good. The first two movies made everything look like it belonged in the world, while this one looks like a straight up video game cutscene. Also, Jake is a fucking psycho in this driving his son to suicide and attempting to murder Spider. The fuck?

>>216760881
It'll be more ironic if he becomes the integrationist who succeeds the initial (movie1) mission of establishing normalized relations with the alien population. Cameron is kind of stuck writing the logical conclusions of the pieces he has at play (outside deus ex machina aewa asspulls) which now is human avatars and their apache scouts. Because he's literally doing what the initial mission Jake ignored was, successfully, now that he's found a tribe/counterculture that isn't hardwired by a fungal superorganism to zerg endlessly into machineguns.

Him being the only (human) defender of the Naavi by the end and arguing for their place and rights in terran pandora is a complete arc from wanting to kill them over all the massacres the PMC had to see in the opening exploration. And it's one of the few series ends that can even work (even especially if it fails)

Rewatched Way of Water after seeing F&A to see if any of the complaints held water and I actually think Fire & Ash for all its flaws is still easily the better film. There’s way more going on here both just as an action movie but also character wise. Because WoW has to basically set up an entire new paradigm for things going forward a lot of the movie is just establishing the rules of the world through the lens of the kids. But little actually happens, Jake and Neytiri go pretty sidelined and even the eventual conflict feels a bit scaled down because it’s just a whaling operation. Jim still shoots the hell out of it so it feels bigger and more impressive than a world ending threat in any other blockbuster but still in retrospect WoW really doesn’t move the needle a lot. Not to mention how much of the runtime is just water effect wank, which don’t get me wrong I still love.

Meanwhile Fire & Ash immediately hits the ground running there’s a lot more action and the threats and skirmishes feel important. The character drama is also all framed by Neteyam’s death and the threat Spider’s existence presents and so the internal conflicts feel more immediate and impactful as well compared to WoW being more about “We don’t fit in.” I just kinda struggle to think of what WoW does better that isn’t done bigger and with more depth in F&A

Pandora orbits Alpha Centauri A which is 4.3 light years away.
It's one of the things that's a bit unbelievable about this universe, he put Pandora around the closest star that's visible to the naked eye, I guess to avoid invoking FTL. So our absolute closest interstellar neighbor, the first place we're able to go and look, just happens to have a world with a rich biosphere and sentient humanoids...

>>
>>216761210
That's an essential part of the story to deliver the thematic warning against what Cameron doesn't want human behaviour to become. He wants us to find balance with nature and conserve life with compassion.
This message would be lost if the humans in the movie were a multi-system species many hundreds of years in the future. They would be too far removed from modern humans for us to easily relate. Alpha Centauri A will be the first other star humanity reach, the message of Avatar needs to be ingrained in us for that first one, right out the gate. If we're being very optimistic on the timescale, the Avatar films would not have been lost to the annals of history by the time the journey becomes possible, meaning future humans will reference them and their eternal themes.
Basically, locating Pandora in Alpha Centauri is one of the biggest contributing factors that makes Avatar the most important films of the 21st century.

What are we doing here, Anon? How does Pandora being just a bit further away make it more believable? Compared to the number of solar systems in the galaxy, 3 is nothing. If we searched 100 empty solar systems before we found Pandora, that would still mean that there were billions of Pandora-like planets in our galaxy. It makes it more interesting that literally the very first one is a biodiversity paradise with sentient life, because that implies the universe is absolutely teeming with life. Which, by the way, for all we know in 2025 could be true (we literally know that little). Therefore, in a universe teeming with life, the themes of the movie are even more prominent.
1: extraterrestrial life not being rare would incentivize humanity to disrespect it, treating it like an infinite resource to be exploited. (Changing the mcguffin from mined unobtainium to biologically harvested amrita was a genius move to support this theme)
2: Humans should remember to be humble and check their dick-swinging, (Cameron is a feminist after all) not solely for compassion to aliens, but out of self-preservation before they get their shit rocked by the next aliens they encounter (there's always a bigger fish)

Only in the spirit world. Scenes there look blurry, have too much bloom, and seem like a slightly poorer quality fake. it is a logical way to distinguish them (blurry flashbacks and dream sequences are a trope for a reason).
Starting the movie in that world is certainly a risk, when it comes to first impressions, but how much does that matter when the audience is going to be there for 3 more hours.

>but once you have the whale's DNA for example you have the machinery that produces the immortality juice right there. It's not magic.
You need to be able to actually recreate and sustain said machinery. And in its natural environment (assuming you can successfully replicate that), it takes a very long time to get enough amrita.
>If you can replicate the smurf's biology, you can replicate everything else.
No, that doesn't follow. Being able to recombine two specific species does not mean you can replicate any particular animal, and then you also have to make sure that it thrives for the experiment to give you economic viability.
>The end goal isn't to produce a whale clone (you can), it's just to replicate the biology that makes the immortality juice.
You're assuming that the biology that makes the juice is just a standalone, modular machine, like the whale is a plane and the amrita glands are some sort of flight subsystem, but real world biology is much messier than this. Assuming you only clone the glands (which might very well be doable, who knows), you then need to sustain them in homeostasis and wait to see if, outside of their environment, they make amrita.

People who say WoW and second half of F&A are the same films forgot most of WoW beyond the fact that there was a battle at the end and the tulkun fought alongside the Na'vi. Almost everything else beyond that is different.

This is correct. In WoW, Loak had an entire character arc where he comes of age. F&A had no character development whatsoever.

My favorite character development was when Jake Sully decides that murdering children is bad. You think he's going to murder a child, but he does a complete 180 and doesn't.

they can't have that, they didn't have the mind upload thing

they could mind upload jake into a new avatar, but it wouldn't achieve much, unless they did that exclusively to execute him publicly and run a cover up of his escape for propagandistic purposes
>>
Spider really was the key to all this
>>
>>216767438
>they didn't have the mind upload thing
they could have had, wouldn't be out of place in these movies.
They need more villains with actual motivation beyond being greedy
>>
>>216767565
>they could have had
if they could, then there was no reason to grab jake to pilot his avatar

besides tom was a scientist, not a soldier, so it wouldn't have been part of the recom program, unless augustine and norm were also in it and they choose to them back to unlock spider's fungal gimmick, in any case they wouldn't end up as active antagonists like quaritch
>>
>>216767389
lol shitposter. If anything Lo’aks entire arc is in F&A
>>
>>216767664
>if they could, then there was no reason to grab jake to pilot his avatar
not impossible to say that was an expedient solution and that they had only done the actual brain upload part while the part where they grow recom bodies wasn't perfected yet and for some reason it doesn't work for normal avatar bodies. They had the brain scanning and brain USB stick on the base in avatar 1 so the tech would exist.

>besides tom was a scientist, not a soldier, so it wouldn't have been part of the recom program
yes fair enough, but also there's nothing known about him other than him being a very good scientist. They could theoretically make him a hardcore proponent of human colonization at the expense of the na'vi. Throw in at the expense of corporate profit too to make him interesting.

In some sense Quaritch is now the younger man; he is in a younger body and passion run hotter when you are young. Sully is like an elderly man past his prime. Their situations are reversed now.

>Avatar: The Way of Water domestic opening: $134M
That's quite a bit more, plus people were hyped with speculation about how much better it might be after fifteen years of technological advancement
This one is just The Way of Water again with a palette swap. Who knows it might have legs but you should brace yourself for this to be a franchise-ending flop
>>
>>216768433
And Return of the King was just Two Towers with a palette swap. That's a stupid, brainlet criticism.
>>
>>216768477
Can't say I've ever heard someone say that The Two Towers and Return of the King are the same movie but I've seen the last two Avatars compared as being extremely similar about a dozen times just today

>$1.3B
that’s easy
>>

From what I hear there's a scene with Lo'ak getting attacked and then saved by Payakan that plays exactly the same in both movies, like they took a scene from Way of Water and accidentally included it in Fire and Ash

no, james is crazy enough to have remade an extremely similar scene all over again with a few cosmetic differences, it wasn't a mistake

it happens again and again in the second movie copying scenes from the first and in the third copying scenes from the first and second

james just doesn't give a flying fuck or thinks it's poetic or something

As a viewer I find the similarities between the movies kinda jarring. So many scenes I've watched before from 1-2-3. Still a very cinematic movie. Avatar 3 is probably the best looking movie I've seen. 3D was dope
