In the first movie (a pretty basic retelling of Pocahontas) they're stand-in's for the Powhatan and Algonquin tribes who encountered the English at Jamestown while themselves emerging from a famine. So they, while showing the CAPACITY for writing/governance/etc that the longhouse tribes did in history (Sigourney Weaver is literally trying to teach them English and math) they're locked at what's basically a no-tech longhouse society that just happens to be able to ride around on birds. You also see plains tribes and Pacific Northwest tribes who all seem to be at the same level of post-disease Amerindians.The second movie introduced the sea/reef people who are pretty explicitly shown to be Polynesians. These people had comparably more advanced seafaring/weapons technology, so there's a tech mismatch between them and the forest people; the sea people have better tech, but the forest people have fast-forwarded thanks to European guns. But sure, still defensible, especially because Jake is explicitly fleeing a long distance to them.The THIRD movie is where things get dumb. The sky people are WELL ahead of either group; they're analogous to Europeans in the 1500's. So, all of a sudden Pandora is home to WILDLY disparate technological societies that all just sort of... interact with each other? Oh, and of course the whales, who are VOLUNTARILY no-tech.So HFYfags like me were basically locked into a paradigm (advanced humans vs. peaceful nature-people who may or may not be pupated by a hive mind) that ended up being RETCONNED. Now the hive mind is but one of a number of entities on the planet and suddenly team human looks a lot less defensible. So a lot of us felt an obligation to side with the new indefensible allies of the RDA rather than admit that Cameron made things way more complicated.

Something I expected but didn't get: a flashback scene showing the volcano erupting and destroying the Mangkwan's home, and the perceived betrayal and suffering from Eywa's neglect that they experienced. Could have been kino and could have added some depth to the Mangkwan by showing what their society looked like beforehand. Instead it's only told not shown, and almost makes you wonder if it really happened, or if it's a lie that Varang uses to manipulate younger Na'vi into joining her death cult
