Cameron is great at directing action and wrangling technology and design, but he’s a terrible dramatic writer and should have hired more help in that area.

It'd be pretty hackneyed for them to just betray him, but fucking over the ash tribe down the line and expecting him to go along with or orchestrate it will be the conflict where he hopefully takes a viable stand and doesn't just go Colonel Kurtz out in the woods. The only positive end for any of the smurfs is coexistence, societal integration, and not getting bureau of Indian affairs'd on a rez. Quaritch alludes movie 1 to how things played out in human history and now he has a reason to learn from it instead of repeat it.
