No way spider just gets over that abraham and isaac moment lmfao. I feel that’s what disappointed me in this, arcs set up go nowhere? Spider is torn between alliance in 2, you expect it to come to a head in 3 but it never does. It just goes back and forth and ultimately ends nowhere

It had 5 writers which were then boiled down to 3 who were writing the screenplay itself. That's too many moving parts, especially on a massive 2-part film and not enough time was spent sitting down and going beat by beat to ensure continuity, character arc, and thematic presentation.

Though, Jim has said it in multiple interviews, he finds plots very boring compared to just showing pretty water, flowers, blue people, and it shows that lack of care.

Personally my theory on Eywa is that it is an alien, and that it came from a ruined planet like Earth's. However, rather than trying to steal resources to perpetuate their doomed ways, this species sent spores of intelligence throughout the universe to keep other intelligent life in balance with nature rather than repeat their mistakes

Remember what Kiri said earlier in the film when she saved Spider, or when she got nature to do her bidding in the previous film (briefly). She calls to Eywa but feels no answer, yet inexplicably feels that she can do something anyway and does it, performing miracles like creating a way for humans to breathe on Pandora on the spot. It's because Kiri is the avatar of Eywa, incarnating in the world but unaware of her origin, fully capable of doing everything she believes Eywa should be doing.

No, it's because Eywa is an AI and Kiri is finally breaking through to the top most programming layer to find that Eywa does not have an actual personality. It's just a caretaker tasked with protecting the ecosystem and life on the planet. If you can get there, you can tell it there's a threat that needs to be taken care of. Or if you're crafty enough, harness the powers yourself. That doesn't mean Kiri *is* Eywa in any way.

In the current state of morality-first entertainment media unfortunately impossible, but I wish there was a Avatar game where you play as part of the RDA, first person but not just action, but legitimately building huge factory cities to slowly industrialize the alien eco-system with employees and soldiers around. And I know there are games like Factorio, Satisfactory, etc. but they are all lacking in the world, environment and opposing forces aspect of it.

Cameron knows he messed up. He made the humans just way too cool. The audience wants them to win too much and doesn't cheer when they die. The games refuse to let you play as humans. At least in old games like AVP, you could play as Humans, Alien and Predators. There wasn't some taboo about not being able to play as the "bad" guy.

>"Don't be a jackass, General"
I loved seeing General Cunt seethe at Navitch getting a hot xeno girlfriend and going native. I will not miss her one bit, good fucking riddance. Loved this scene, Navitch takes the lead and sticks up for his woman, getting right into the General's face. Varang is a sharp girl too, she immediately picks up that there's bad tension in the air between the General and Quaritch and dislikes her right away, and she doesn't even have a clue what they're saying to each other because she doesn't speak English. She was also the only one to connect the dots between Quaritch giving the order to the sniper to drop one of her people with the tools that "makes thunder", and deducted that they communicated via the weird band Quaritch has around his neck. She's not only eye-candy, she's pretty smart

Just came from the first screening. I just way to say that I love all my Avafrens very much. I am happy. :)

the Christian/jew iconography is piling on. Jake considering killing Spider is an obvious nod to the Abraham/Issac story, but less obvious is the major characters getting pierced with arrows that stay in their flesh for a bit, especially Neytiri by herself in the forest, are strongly suggestive of Saint Sebastian. My initial impression is that it's on about the same quality level as the second film, meaning: very good. The smart move here was that they stayed with the same cast of characters and developed them a bit further, and didn't try to introduce anyone else new apart from Crazy Bitch.

RDA: Scott... you just... don't, GET IT, do ya? We have to sack out, wait a few hours, and then we can do a formal firing squad at dawn, what's the problem? He's in a box, under guard.

I agree I am very pleased they didn't ditch anything from the second film and doubled down on the fact the Sully family are fully part of the "sea people". People complain that it feels like "Way of Water part 2" but I loved that it focused on the same plot and characters. They did a brilliant job introducing and immersing us into their new home in the second film, and it would be dumb to just forget the impact it had on all of them just to show something more new for marketing. I said this before but I see this franchise as more like LOTR than MCU; when you see a new place or a new character, it's there to stay and continue to play a part, not just something to put in the trailers for that movie and then move on to the next new thing. Like how Rivendell, Rohan, Gondor and all the characters from those places appear in multiple films of that trilogy and it never feels like you are just seeing more of the same.
>>
Do they make the planet more hostile in Fire and Ash? I was disappointed that it didn't feel very dangerous at all anymore in the Way of Water. The guys on the whaling ship act like it's just a fun fishing trip. The only hostile wildlife you even see is that shark that tried to eat Jake's kid.
>>
>>216779338
>and she doesn't even have a clue what they're saying to each other because she doesn't speak English
The whole webm's an awkward family meeting. When Ardmore finished speaking, I like how Varang 15 seconds in the video goes, "Is the bitch talking shit about me?", and Quaritch in her native language is like, "Relax, Cupcake. I got this.", and he's forced to go face-to-face with Ardmore and say, "Come on, mom. Let's not make this any more complicated than it has to." This scene's a chef's kiss.

Wanted to like it. The world feels very small somehow…all the effort worldbuilding Cameron has done is wasted on a plot that consists of varying characters being taken captive and escaping with little explanation as to how just to set up battles that are decided by deus ex machina so the whole thing can start over again. The villains are the only interesting characters and the only reason not to like them is they are killing whales which is a narrative cheat, as killing whales is like killing puppies. Idk.. I can’t help but feel all the effort and technology is wasted somehow. Love the 3D, HFR, want to like the movies, but it’s a big empty nothing. I thought of how different this feels in scope from something like fellowship of the ring. The fellowship travels from The Shire, to Rivendell, Moria, lothlorien, to Amon hen and there are scenes in other lands and the whole thing feels vast and epic in a real way that you feel. The Avatar movies have a whole planet to explore but the scale feels no larger than switching between a couple dioramas. Cameron is great at directing action and wrangling technology and design, but he’s a terrible dramatic writer and should have hired more help in that area.
>>
>>216778719
She's more in contact with the force of nature and only talks to strong creatures. If you look weak she hates you.
>>
>>216779513

Are you quite certain of that? Scoresby really shouldn't have survived given how he was thrashed around last time (he should have just bled out), and yet somehow *sigh* he returned...

I may have missed it, but I don't believe I actually saw her get pulled into the vortex, although it was obviously looking very dire for her. And she did order to abandon ship. Quaritch himself escaped at the last second in the first one. OTOH the captain/general going down with the ship compares with Titanic.

Also, the Varang/Quartich interview has obvious (but never over-the-top) BDSM suggestions, to amuse the audience. The hooks suggest a hook suspension scene, and in fact one of these is depicted in one of the comics (Jake does like a pectoral self-suspension as a way to expiate his sins/find his focus). The vagina entrance to Varang's hut was also amusing.

>At least in old games like AVP, you could play as Humans, Alien and Predators. There wasn't some taboo about not being able to play as the "bad" guy.
Because it's silly. I hate what happened to people, constantly trying to morally one-up others. You see it for Warhammer 40k a lot too (also Starship Troopers and of course Helldivers 2), where they just refuse to separate fiction from reality, so if anyone likes the wrong made-up sci-fi faction, it is automatically mental gymnastic-ed into meaning they support everything that faction stands for in reality too. Then they smugly claim everyone else has no "media literacy", when they do the equivalent of walking in on a action movie and going
>Woah, how can you like this?! Don't you know violence is bad???
because they are apparently too retarded for the concept of fiction.
>>
>>216779583
The Ash clan are something very hostile. They raid other na'vi tribes and attack the wind traders. They'll scalp you, eat you, and wear your bones as trophies. There are poisonous plants in the jungle that can shoot barbs at people killing them quickly. The Tulkun are far more aggressive now and will attack any further human fishing trips.

>>216779638

Dude we're three movies in and the world and worldbuilding feels trite or even idiotic.
The first movie had something going for it with the fluorescent jungle and idk animals with a couple of legs more than normal but that's where it just stopped.
Three movies in and nothing was really added to the distinctiveness of this setting. It's just really janky takes on colonialism over and over with barely anything else said. The natives still do their native thing, their villages still look like native villages, their rituals/culture is still a pastiche of earth native cultures etc...
You can easily imagine that everywhere on the planet it's exactly the same thing, same copy-pasted tribes and villages with nothing going on really.
Basically the first movie established the setting (which was rudimentary to begin with) and then two further movies did nothing more in that regard. It's just rethreading of the same shit with as you say, different characters getting kidnapped or retrieved or whatever the fuck.
>>
>>216779638
After three movies its clear what these movies are about and cameron and the fans dont care about plot or characters. The 4th movie will be the same plot and will make another billy.

The first movie begins with a scarred guy explaining it's dangerous.
People act like it's weird that humans lost in the first movie but it isn't.
The fact they can't breathe the air alone means they'll never take the planet.
You can only deploy someone for as long as they can tolerate a full face mask and they can access oxygen.
What would be a housecat on Earth is like 14 feet tall on Pandora.
It really is a murder world.
>>
>>216779731
Whole setting really lends itself to explain "respawning" when you die, even if it wouldn't be necessary.
>>
I think it's pretty stupid that the last 2 movies are an endless sequence of suddenly retarded aliens getting abducted by suddenly competent humans and then suddenly competent aliens escaping from the suddenly retarded humans. They don't do anything else they just abduct and escape like 5 times per movie.

>forcibly keeping everyone in an extremely primitive pre-stoneage
How is that a bad thing? They have everything they could possibly want. Everything provided. You're saying their life is bad because they don't have cheetos, hot pockets, honda civics, wage slaving and taxes? They already all live together. Houses would destroy their forest and their tight knit communities. No one needs social media or tv there. The weather is kept pretty mild and pleasant.

In a universe with canonically interstellar travel, a being that forcibly keeps a planet primitive just dooms it to an early death via an external conqueror. The only reason the planet hasn't been completely razed and exploited is because Cameron doesn't want to write a story that's even remotely realistic
>>
>>216779849
However "muahahaha" the top brass present as, it's pretty clear that the RDA very much does not want to disrupt Pandora's biosphere. The most damage they do is basically dropping a thermonuclear weapon to clear out the location for their city.

Sure, they could probably destroy Pandora entirely with a planet-buster or something and then scoop up the minerals, but the goal seems to be to make mankind a multi planetary species on a planet that's insanely earth-like and close to home. That it's still far more dangerous than most locations on Earth isn't enough justification to scrap the plan or nuke the place.

Their glass was fine. Quaritch wasn't even worried about it being penetrated by arrows since they just bounced off. It only started being a problem when Jake taught the Na'vi how to dive at high speed and shoot at right angles so the arrows would penetrate
>>
Is it true that Kiri saw Spider being taken away in front of her?

So what is the in-universe reason they just don't nuke the natives?

Or spread some genetically edited disease to wipe them out?

I just want to see the Ash tribe to be going full skypeople next movie when more RDA show up. Ditch the tribal trappings and have the warriors start fighting in military gear to follow Quaritch/Lyle's style (weirding out the next generation of military Recoms) and walking around in Navi sized human clothing in their downtime while also keeping to their raider ways because with the generals death they are basically the military arm of the outpost.

I dunno, the species that developed space travel has also doomed its own planet. sacrificing their planet just to get to the next closest world, doesn't seem that sustainable.

Its hubris to think that technological progress is linear and only makes a species stronger. We're the only example that we know of and only have been really technological for a couple of centuries, and we don't know where its headed.
>>
>>216779953

I am personally embarrassed that I didn't realize the significance of Spider requesting to keep the dog tag as an obvious tool for a jailbreak trope/setup. The movie even shows us clearly that it's a small, hard metal object and I didn't pick up on that one until he's working on the grille, Anton Chigurh style. Likewise, I intuited that the airships were really weak, tenuous things, but again I didn't make the obvious connection (that they are ideal targets for fire, the whole theme) until the attack.

One nice thing that the movie does is it underlines exactly why metal tools are forbidden (also in the comics lore): they get sucked into flux vortexes and shit.

Don't think there is one. The human settlements ships are shown to set down by turning a many miles wide radius into barren wastelands, but for some reason they duke it out with the natives and nature in skirmishes, when they really don't need any of those for what they are there for, but they consistently fuck it up for them.

There's humans that work for and side with the navi, there's the sympathizers who sabotage the city for the navi, there's several soldiers who again fight for the navi. Humans are on both sides of the conflict several times.

The sudden pivot from mining to colonization is explainable by Earth collectively saying "oh, shit, there's intelligent life; change of plan!"

We know that humans have been on Pandora for long enough that Stanford has a xenoanthropology program. Add in the travel delays and humans + Navi have probably been coexisting for 30+ years. It's clear to me that Earth doesn't want war with the Navi.

>tribal people have a deep bond and care for the nature around them, they live in tune with another, we should be more like them

For the first time, I found myself getting curious about the near moon. It was shown twice. I should rewatch 1 at some point and compare, especially the initial entry and the sky when Jake is cut off in the jungle for the first time. Aah, now I want to re-watch the whole thing. The Great Work Unfolds.

Even the Odyssey trailer has significance here (the one trailer that I actually cared about and watched, and I liked what I saw). the blue one-eyed gas giant planet, the palette swap from Jupiter, is named Polyphemus, the namesake of the cyclops shown very briefly in the Odyssey trailer. Pandora and the other major moon(s) are thus just the Galilean moons. And among those, Europa may be the one with the best potential for harboring (or sustaining introduced) life, an idea explored in 2010.

It's also nice that they killed off Roxto, Broccoli hair boy no cap on god frfr

Kurzweil talked about this when he reviewed the first one in 2010; basically exponential growth is so hard for humans to comprehend that any filmmaker will lock AI at present level no matter how far in the future the story takes place.

Another factor is that super intelligent AI really kinda kills a lot of the story of any movie that would be relatable to humans. It's why a growing share of movies now are explicitly set before 2007 or, if set in the present, remove the smartphones through some plot contrivance. Instant comms kills a lot of story.

This but with quaritch there to be the viewer framing for seeing varaang react to things more mundane than guns.
I want to see her have an emotional reaction to the concept of abundance. The humans having basic food security to her would be a total and complete vindication of her tribes rejection of naavi beliefs after a life clawed out of struggle. An imposed struggle.

My head canon is that Earth is actually fine. Sully simply remembers the worst of a climate-change/nuclear-war/whatever ecological crisis that has now largely been solved and the RDA is simply a very wealthy UN-backed company that's testing the feasibility of colonization.

Sure, the average person on Earth probably lives in a crappy hive city full of Indians and the income inequality situation is probably a cyberpunk nightmare, but the planet itself is probably pretty stable.

Like, in this one scene alone from the first movie you see that extinct species are being reintroduced, sea level rise isn't really a thing, etc.

This honestly seems to be the case, but in every movie someone drops the “Earth is totally done for" line.

The world is probably a complete clusterfuck, but I still don’t see how that makes sense when humanity has fusion and can literally bioengineer complex organisms from scratch.

First Avatar game is from the days of each platform having a different version. I didn't play the main one for PS3/360/PC but I believe it's the only one where you play as the RDA for parts of it. I played some of the Wii version and it was garbage shovelware. Mostly a beat-em-up with some rail shooter levels but neither style was good. Surprisingly, the DS game had nothing in common with the others and was basically a 2D Zelda clone. Been a long time since I played it but I remember liking it a lot. Pretty sure they all take place before the first movie.
Frontiers of Pandora is just Far Cry with aliens, so if you like those games you'll enjoy it but if you don't then it's nothing special.

The whole movie was filler, every character is in the exact same position as they were at the beginning of the movie, other than Spider who about a fifth of the way into the movie can now breath without a mask. I'm pretty sure the ending was exactly the same as the last movie. No one learned anything or accomplished anything they couldn't have accomplished within the first 2 minutes of the movie if the situation presented itself right then. The only character that had an arc was the blind whale, who had about 2 minutes of screen time. Maybe you could argue that the whales are pro killing now, thats the big overarching arc of the movie.

>>
>>216781843
As much as i love all 3 movies so far, I'm getting a bit weary of the lack of narrative closure. We've been waiting WAY too long and not really getting to big game changing twists. The story they wrote for 2 thru 5 was too complex and too intricate for its own good. It needed to be trimmed and streamlined heavily to get where it needs to go. It's TOO big a story and the whole framework of the franchise is collapsing under its own immense weight.

Maybe Cameron refused to budge on streamlining the story, maybe they wanted to drag it out to make more releases by having 4 half-sequels instead of 2 full sequels. I dont know, but waiting over a decade to reach the conclusion is giving me psycholgical blue balls.

The movies are almost completely CGI, so you would think streamlining the story and cutting out all the excess would be in their best interest. Can't have a whole bunch of experimental deleted material because of the cost to finalize the CGI.

I wanna just get to the end and move on with my life. When i saw Avatar 1, i was a teenager. When Avatar 5 comes out I'll be in my early 40s.
>>
>>216782021
The movies probably would've been better if Jake and his retarded family died, forcing the story to revolve around Quaritch instead
>>
>>216781990
Then you are fucking stupid? Idk what to tell you. After the holiday weekend it will be on track to at least hit 2 billion. It will have no competition for like, 6 straight weeks at the theater, anywhere in the world.

>>
>>216782037
Nah 2 should've ended with Jake successfully flipping Quaritch over to the Pandoran side after the RDA disavows him for failing them, like a Goku/Vegeta thing. 3 should've been Quaritch joining the Ash tribe, warring with the other tribes for a bit before teaming up, fire and water together, against the RDA base and headquarters (without a whaling repeat from 2, just have all the whalers annihilated in 2, no rematch). End 3 with a huge cliff hanger briefly showing Eywa's form/nature and revealing something giga-lore drop about Navi's ancient history.

I disagree. I think it should have "arcs" that begin and end but still lead into each other smoothly and just escalate to the higher threat. Taking a page from Zack Snyder and having each movie escalate further down the same storyline while building upon the events of the previous. This will ensure engagement, unlike the Marvel method, which has led to a nebulous vacuum of a story arc.

It's quite a hole for Cameron to write his way out of without a pivot into how IRL cavalry officers and Indian Agents tried to advocate for tribes they personally knew(/liked) in the face of apathetic at best and commonly hostile government policy. It's not about what Quaritch thinks. He's literally a Navi now. He doesn't have a choice but to go native. Old memories in a Navi body. He's technically a completely new being. Humans have nothing he wants and they don't respect him. He has no place there. He can't go back even if he does feel nostalgic. Being a re-com, he by design MUST go native, which i guess is the flaw with that PROJ PHNX program. Wonder how long it'll take Lyle to switch over.

At one point around the battle arc it just felt a little too slutty how the characters can swap from ikran to skimwing to Toruk at will, but that's part of why I personally love it all so much: the furry/bestiality angle. A strictly heterosexual and monogamous culture are suddenly total sluts with the various animals. Jim wanted to go a step further in the original but his people actually managed to rein him in a half-step because it was just too weird.

Still, Jake's entrance into the bone-riddled Toruk den (a new environment) felt a little too easy. What the second half of this one does is to blend and rehash the callouts from the first two.

>Headcanon of headcanons
The RDA company man backed him up despite his operator beard. The general lady was written as a roadblock for the last 2 movies.

It'd be pretty hackneyed for them to just betray him, but fucking over the ash tribe down the line and expecting him to go along with or orchestrate it will be the conflict where he hopefully takes a viable stand and doesn't just go Colonel Kurtz out in the woods. The only positive end for any of the smurfs is coexistence, societal integration, and not getting bureau of Indian affairs'd on a rez. Quaritch alludes movie 1 to how things played out in human history and now he has a reason to learn from it instead of repeat it.

You're not getting it. The neurology and psychology of the recom's navi body are different than a humans, by definition. Navi are an alien species. Cameron isn't doing a nature of consciousness thing by putting Quaritch in war paint to assure the loyalty of his insurgent fighters.
