Ethnic strife makes it difficult for American cinema to produce better films. That's because being “neurotic” is something that Jews and white people do. Not non-white people like blacks and Asians. At the same time, recognizing your class and racial status is something that non-white people do, but not white people. This clear division only makes it more difficult to produce better films. Even in non-genre cinema, people abide by self-imposed genre rules and restrictions.

L'Ange du /film/.

An analogy that explains the appeal of the transcendental in film:
Anne's ascetic and controlled nature causes the Annecolyte to recalibrate his conception of pleasure. The sag of her tights at the back of her ankles in this photograph SUGGESTS the image of sweaty feet, of pantyhose peeling off her legs at the end of a long day on set in the sun, of tossing them and the rest of her clothes in a heap in the corner and lighting a cigarette in the nude on her bed. We never SEE these things, Anne does not spoonfeed us with these images. However, her restraint forces the audience to become a part of the filmmaking experience...

Yes, I believe that Anne W. is the face of the transcendentalist movement in /film/ (whichmI believe is composed of me, myself and I, but maybe someday I will find a fellow striver for the numinous...).

"I give the spectator the possibility of participating. The audience completes the film by thinking about it; those who watch must not be just consumers ingesting spoon-fed images."
— Michael Haneke.

We can see here that Anne has adopted a Hanekian approach to expressing her sexuality.

I still liked it, but the first slasher/noir segment drags quite a bit for no real emotional or aesthetic payoff following the solid silent film opening. I thought there would be a bit more retrospective connective tissue on the rewatch, but you still kind of forget about it by the time the movie is over, but it is an anthology film. The long take, in comparison, is probably twice as long as the other segments but flies by and has way more emotional range.

It's sad that some people have turned "filmed theatre" into a dismissive handwave of films they don't like. As if Bresson is the authority on cinema and it's not just his personal philosophy. And newsflash — Robert Bresson made filmed theatre. His fabled "cinematograph" is something he wanted to strive for, it was part of his intellectual inquest into a "pure cinema" as a film scholar, but is clearly not something he ever reached. And Bresson was a fan of Bondshit so really this whole "filmed theatre is not cinema" thing is nonsense and would probably have Bresson himself calling you a retard. If you watch any movie that's not Mothlight you're a filmed theatre enjoyer.

I don't mind any director who establishes a personal framework that they want to work from themselves but it's ridiculous when their fans act like this framework is prescriptive and applies to all film consumption when the director is literally only using it to make their own films and the directors themselves are watching films that don't live up to these ideals.
Another example is Haneke, who of course has strong theoretical opinions, but this is just the canvas he works off personally, and actually he is a PTA, Coppola, and even Spielberg enjoyer, when he says things like "i want to make films that X" or "a film shouldn't X" he is only holding himself to this standard as an artist.
And of course The Terminator doesn't fit into Andrei's philosophy laid out in "Sculpting in Time" but he lusted after it anyway.

Any film director's philosophy is his own personal one and I'm sure they wouldn't want every other filmmaker to make films the same way they do. I question greatly when cinephiles straight up copy and paste one director's personal philosophy formed over a lifetime of cinephilia instead of crafting their own. I would say my own philosophy has been formed by like 20 people consciously and unconsciously, 100s if not 1000s of people.

tldr "filmed theatre"fags are like /lit/ newfags that read Meditations and think they're literally Aurelius and have the world figured out instead of reading 100 books and developing a personal philosophy.

Most movies to me feel the same. The reason for that is because most films are just focusing on drama. "Filmed drama" if you will. Bresson felt like one of the first directors who actually treated cinema as a standalone art form. He even said that he considers most films a reproduction of theatre, not a true art. You have to say that his philosophy is of utmost importance. I am not saying that every film needs to be filmed like a Bresson film, but much can be learned.

Funny how Straub is equally rigorous with his films and the performances of his actors as Bresson, if not more, and he gets accused of being filmed theatre often. I wonder if Bresson had never said or written anything about cinema if he too wouldn't be accused of it.

I find it so hilarious when women who I know have feminist leanings irl cream their pants in the comment sections when Brando’s character mistreats Blanche and his wife like “teehee I can’t help it, he’s just SO PRIMAL X^)”. I know it’s the way things are in this world to a certain degree, but their blatant hypocrisy is just priceless.

Personally, I think Vivian Leigh did the best acting in the movie. My favorite scene will always be when she comes clean with Mitch, her gentleman caller, so sweltering and tragic

I don’t want realism, I want MAGIC!

Nobody accuses Straub of making filmed theatre, what are you talking about
>>
Bresson cleverly solves the problem of overly theatrical actors by casting random retards off the street who can't even deliver their lines, what a genius!
>>
>>216824492
This is based, though.
>>
>>216824492
Yes, it's unironically genius.
>>
>>216824492
If you ever worked with amateur actors you would know that they're the most expressive and theatrical of all. The way they're acting in his films is not their own tendency but what he buck broke them into over like 60 takes at a time.
>>
>>216824441
I've seen it in this here very general.

> If you ever worked with amateur actors you would know that they're the most expressive and theatrical of all

No director did it like Kiarostami in Close Up. For the real-life case of fraud being tried in court, he had the real plaintiff and his family play themselves, the real fraudster played himself, the real judge trying the case played himself, the real cops who arrested the fraudster played themselves, and the film director who the impostor was pretending to be played himself and even met the fraudster as well after the film was done being shot. One of my all time favorite films

I look at him- I look at hin and go "yeah right what did she have, twenty bong hit transplants?"

Gallo, who famously said this while reviewing a King Crimson album
