Literally every film is open to interpretation. Meaning isn't always deliberate, the subconsciousness is always active. No serious artist makes 'puzzle boxes' either, that aspect is only a tiny facet of Lynch's work that people like to blow up out of proportion.

I became burned out as a cinephile. I am tired of dialectics and interpretation of art in general. So I go on hiatus from /film/.
Inshallah I may return after some time if I get my enthusiasm back. If not I will stick to watching Argento, PWSA, Bresson, Zombie, Bay, Akerman, Ozu, Kurosawa (‘yoshi), Carpenter and other artists whose work is so purely and simply “is” — work that eludes the jejune mediocrity of the cinephile’s attempt to interpret what the film “really means”… work that “is the thing in itself”.

It's indistinguishable to pampered children throwing conniptions over different foods touching on their plate. When people are denigrating something as 'not /film/', it's never about establishing objective criteria for what qualifies as '/film/' in the first place (as if there was anything dignified about it), instead, it's simply indicative of a basic struggle to reconcile that other people hold different opinions and different values.

>>216996232
How many buyers out there do you think are looking for a film, find it in 4 versions and choose the Criterion version? I don't think it's that common outside of Europe. Most of the time you only have access to one or two versions, maybe just one if you want 4k.
>>
>>216990262
Looking for a movie that used to get posted on here whenever someone brought up Criterion

>>
>>216997030
There are many unique visual designs, far more trust me, be it overt or subtle you could take as a costume. I just think it's a matter of audience, the people who are most into costumes are not gonna pick arthouse and the people really into arthouse will not go to a con dressed up
You can see the fashion and costuming of a character for that's always present but it's not about characters that way most of the time.

I'd say as the other anon, Alex counts as that

Nice Patti. You know, I’m something of a rock n roll something-or-other myself…

But yes, I’m tired of this culture of art having to justify its own existence (every day, “is X /film/, is Y /film/“ and the ensuing arguments)… Pseudo-intellectual lines of inquiry such as these are really just stifling real appreciation of art. Of course I am not above this myself. I think it will be good to just go and watch some movies for a while and not try to interrogate them whilst watching. I remember watching Prurient Paulie’s First Reformed in such a mindset (after a past intellectual burnout) and it was the most fun I had watching a movie in years.
I will watch more Mikey Madeke because I appreciate his Akermanian ambivalence toward his subjects. His films are unstifling and the binds that trap us in the cinema seat are loose and slack and we have freedom to move about in the space of his work. This I want more than anything in art. I will let you know what I think of the Hanukkah films I watch when I return.

>>

>>
>>216997675
It doesn't deal with the same themes and it's in totally different genres.
Burning is a murder mystery revolving around a killer that targets "useless women" while Parasite is a satire on capitalism and class relations. The latter resonated more with audiences because it has universal appeal while the former is a rather forgettable genre flick with only minimal satirical elements.

While the class disparity between the protagonist and the villain is explored it's not the main focus of the movie. The focus is on the fact that the villain is a serial killer that gets away with murdering women because they're "inconvenient".
Class relations are front and center in Parasite which is why it resonated with international audiences
