>>217033440Mhmm, excellent taste. I remember seeing that when I was young and being very impressed.>>217033455Have you seen Confessions of an English Opium-Eater starring Vincent Price? I watched it around the same time and had a similar response. I honestly think it's the most underrated film I've ever seen, and was confused that people on the net weren't lauding it as some early masterpiece. It's just a very strange film... not sure if there have been high quality re-releases of it but I might have to buy one and see if it holds up.
>>217033440>look in mirror>evil face smiling back
>>217033342
>>217032483Those are the prices people ask for, those aren't the prices they're being sold at.I have a few OOPs myself. For the most part, collectors don't like to part with what they have, and they don't like to pay huge prices for what they don't have. If they have something rare and they decide to sell it, the price they ask for is the price it would take them to part with it, not the price they expect others to agree to. That transaction almost never comes. Collectors know they're better off just waiting for a (usually better quality) re-release, which is inevitable.
>>217033648>that move
>>217033651Why would somebody list something for sale they don't want to sell
>>217033440>ywn see her ankles and demonstrate your lederhosen schuhplattler>>217033582>Confessions of an English Opium-EaterNo, but sounds interesting, I'll look into it. I thought it was neat that in the House of Usher short story, the character Usher is a opium head. Big commodity in Poe's time, even now ofc. And Vincent Price did a version in the early '60s. Surrealism and drugs kind of go hand in hand, even before there was a normie culture around 'em.>>217033613Nice find, I've yet to watch that one, but I know the same director did Frankenstein. Old Dark House came out in late '32, right around when Vampyr premiered in Europe. It wouldn't come to America until years later, but maybe was available in bootleg or certain theaters. So, perhaps Old Dark House had the first female creepy smile on film.
>>217033667Because people need money sometimes and physical media isn't a necessity for survival (unless you're a manchild)
>>217033667As I said, they want to sell it, but they're only willing to sell it for a price that others likely aren't willing to pay. They want the movie and they want the money, so their asking price is higher than most people will agree too. Ultimately, it does not sell. It remains a listing price, not a sale price.
>>217033698So they need money but list something at the price it would take them to part with it, not the price people are willing to pay, this not selling the item when they need money enough to list the item for sale in the first placewhat
>>217033724Are you fucking retarded
>>217033724Yes. It's tragic, but that's life.
>>217033697In the very least, it's basically a Vincent Price exploitation style film so is worth a watch for horror fans.
>>217033811I liked Masque of the Red Death with him, another Poe story. Not really a fan of the Roger Corman flicks, though, they're mostly boring like Italian giallos.

Any new year's resolutions, /hor/? I'm going to make more of an effort to watch modern stuff and be less judgemental about it
>>217034514More Tubislop. All the shit getting lavish VinSyn 4Ks right now was once sneered at DTV shit, and I want to catch up on some stuff that will eventually be that now. Stuart Paul's movies (Deadly Lessons, Heaven and Hell) are prime examples waiting to get discovered.
>>217034514I'm not going to watch any more of these new "horrors" that are actually thrillers with some violence. Companion is the perfect example, though I only really watched that for Sophie Thatcher. I skipped Dangerous Animals.
>>217033244The evil smile together with psychological horror and supernatural monsters wouldn't come together until The Shining and Possession. The curse element would come later from The Ring. But the '50s and '60s had the seeds being planted of the mind virus monster with films like Carnival of Souls, Dementia, Night of the Demon. Later we got Nightmare on Elm Street. The '60s also had movies like Rosemary's Baby and Seconds which really focus on psychological torture/paranoia more or less. I'd wager it started with movies like Dr. Caligari. Smile is basically all that wrapped up in a "woe is me I'm a woman" template reminiscent of Safe (1995). Also throw in more recent flicks to steal from like It Follows, Terrified, Hereditary, Marianne, and Truth or Dare. The sfx monster was a combination of the classic '80s practical effects flicks: Poltergeist, Evil Dead, The Thing, etc. The latter film's 2011 remake was done by the same effects studio. They also did the stuff for IT Chapter 2, who's creature designer created the Smile monster. Thanks for reading my post about Smile, I have more to say about this 6/10 film I deeply enjoy for cherry picked reasons.
In truth, Parker Finn wishes he could make a horror on the level of Pulse or something thrilling like Cure, but his movies are only better than the American remakes of those movies.I think this movie comes the closest to the short story BLIT (1988) and the concept of Roko's basilisk. The Ring does not have the same appeal imo, but I liked the American remake of that. Pulse is way better ofc.
Kevin Bacon's first famous role was getting the arrow through the neck in Friday the 13th (1980) from Paramount. His daughter stars in Smile, which was produced by the same company and is her first notable role.
>>217034840I'm not such a devoted fan of 1, but 2 is explicitly an addiction movie and it's the best one I've ever seen.
>>217034902People generally prefer 2, even has a higher rating on RYM. It's faster, more exciting, has a bigger budget, more ideas thrown into it. It's the best film Parker has made to date. But I still prefer the first one. It got me into psychological horror and horror in general, and I have fond memories with it. Also, I think the monster design looks slightly better and had a better reveal.
>>217034892The whole industry is such a cesspool
>>217034840The problem with Smile is the underlying idea is a clear The Ring style curse ripoff. It Follows was similar, but the idea and resolution was unique enough to warrant it.Smile just traded crawling out of a tv with crawling into ya mouth, but the character story resolution fell very flat. Smile 2 just decided to Wizard of Oz the entire film away and slap on a more straight ending. Marginally better I guess?I also didn't like the demon much, just looked like an mexican gang member who ripped off the wrong guy.
Bros I saw a foreign film, I think Korean, ages ago about a really scary terrifying boar, any idea what that was called?
>>217035013Chaw
>>217034514I gotta watch more pre-1960s stuff. I've hardly watched anything from classic Universal and earlier.
>>217026411Based
>>217035035Old movies suck
>>217034967Well, The Ring didn't invent curse chain movies, that came from Sole Survivor (1984), which was basically remade into Final Destination. I'd argue Nightmare on Elm Street created it first technically, even though the curse part isn't outright stated. It kinda became part of the lore later by Freddy vs. Jason that if you hear about Freddy and his crimes, he can infect your dreams/reality. Also that movie cemented the no-win nihilistic ending, but there were earlier examples like Halloween, Carrie, or Psycho, where the bad guys live on.>unique enough to warrant itEh, I didn't like It Follows that much. The kills were neat in places and I like the idea of the monster that follows you to death. Just the metaphor for sex seemed too obvious, but I see that was people's problem with Smile. Parker Finn can't write a story or dialogue to save his ass. Might as well have a line like "I'm going to beat this trauma and get my life back!">Wizard of Oz the entire film awayThe first film acts in the same way. The monster isn't real, it's just insane people killing themselves essentially.>I also didn't like the demon muchIt looks more like the Tar Man zombie from Return of the Living Dead, but with more mouths like something out of Lovecraft. Or perhaps a Deadite from Evil Dead. I thought the design was nifty, and the second one looked kinda silly. We didn't even get the POV shot (it was used earlier with the Skye doppelganger/The Ring chick reference).
Actually I invented curse chain films
>>217035112>The Ring didn't invent curse chain moviesOut of the stuff I'm aware of I'd credit Night of the Demon 1957, which was of course itself based on a short story
What should I watch if I don't like jumpscares, but I also don't like le newest a42 genre-redefining, trope-subverting, atmospheric, dark and eerie, emotionally draining, gut wrenching, aesthetically heavy craft by post-horror auteur with an arthouse edge, dread-inducing, suspenseful build up with strong character development and gradual feeling of escalation, bone-chilling slow burn with “say more with less” approach and soul-shaking, blood-curdling, skin-crawling and nerve-wracking exercise in persistently looming dread where tension and anxiety permeates every frame as movie reaches its nail-biting, jaw-clenching and paranoia-inducing final climax, free of any cheap gore, cartoonish CGI or infantile jumpscares horror film?
>>217035066...your bleh!
>>217035165Bluey
>>217035190Bluey is one of the few representations of my city in film though, the other one was there was a single scene on a bridge in Inspector Gadget 2
>>217035150I mentioned that one earlier, yeah, underrated flick. The monster being a specific demon from hell is different than a cosmic entity/mind virus with no discernible origin. It reminds me of Drag Me to Hell, another big inspiration for Smile 2. The fist in the mouth scene is a direct homage.
>>217035211Nta but is The Woman In Black considered curse chain? I watched the original last October. It was damn good.
>>217035165Smile's ending was all practical, minus the blood particle effects and stuff like that. A lot of people couldn't tell though. This same exact critique was leveled against the same studio for their treatment of The Thing 2011. I don't know enough about why they chose to overlay so much CGI over the top of the practical work, but that's the style now I guess.
>>217035165Zombie films.
>>217035200I'll answer your question if you're a beautiful redhead
>>217035252I am not, I'm blonde
>>217035247Never seen that one. I always confuse it for Stay Alive (2006), though.
>>217035267Our business is finished, then
>>217035276it's horrover
I'm a third shift burger and I love aussie hours
The real horror film in Australia is trying to survive in this fucking economy
Happy New Year, /hor/. I must slumber. I wonder what posts I'll be responding to tomorrow!
>>217035337you grasp instinctively
>>217035337almost certainly one from a retarded indian man
>>217035337is that Angry Rice
I'm just gonna say itI thought the first FNAF movie was actually not that bad, far better than I was expecting, it was a decently fun time with a few cringe bits but NOT SHABBYFNAF 2 on the other hand was everything I thought 1 was going to be and it was fucking awful
>>217035322That and this cunt.
>>217035388Has any part of the Wolf Creek franchise featured an American yet? I think a horror flick about a seppo who can't handle the bants would be be great, it's weird that stuff like WC one and Wake in Fright is about city Aussies vs rural ones. I'd love a movie called Cunt about an American getting his ass handed to him
>>217035383Hmmm interesting I thought they were about the same level. 2 had some better fluff with the animatronics, though Jason Bumhouse lied and it was not any scarier or more violent.I hated the ending though because it felt liked I had watched half the plot of a film.
>>217035383Both movies suck and I think it's because the game creator is writing them. He doesn't know how to write a movie. The potential is so great for this franchise but it needs to be balanced between his lore autism and someone who knows what they're doing professionally.
>>217035427>americans think wake in fright is a terrifying, surreal, brutal examination of the drinking culture of 80s australia and the harsh realities of a mostly male cashed up town>australians just think someone filmed their average night out
>>217035441I wouldn't say suck, at least not the first one, I mean it was better than fucking Midsommar or Ex Machina, but yeah I think Scott can write a really interesting premise but not much to back it up
>>217035427I really hope that's the plot of WC3 because I agree, it'd be a funny bunch of political jabs too. It's supposed to film soon and Jarratt just needs to not die somehow before it films.Haven't seen the TV show so maybe there's an episode in that about it.
>>217035441Although know what you mean, it's entirely possible that the hollywood version would suck ass for the opposite reason. I actually thought the lore-tism was gonna be a roadbump the first film overcame but the "actually there's another pizza place right around the corner" had me confused. Also I bet he was behind casting because almost the entire film is white.
>>217035551holy fuckin BASED
>>217035551Speaking of if that really was all the McKenna Grace we're getting what a waste
Im here to remind you all that REC is, by a great margin, the best zombie flick ever made. That was all.
>>217035602So we can add it to the great list of Spanish films like...uh....um....Spirit of the Beehive? And uh.....Dia De La Bestia and...uh....

I'm only now realizing that John Jarrett starred in Picnic At Hanging Rock. That means he's in two all time top Australian kinos.>Dark Age is a 1987 horror adventure filmHe's in this too, will have to check it out
When did this turn into Australian hours?
>>217035745Brisbane hours is 14 ahead of est, it's like 8pm there

Happy New Year /hor/
>>217035602I don't think the infected in REC even count as zombiesThey're still alive and not rotting, the virus even improves their resilience
>>217036602But then neither do the infected in 28 Days Later. Zombies/infected/possessed, it's all the same.
HES HERE
>>217036885they're not zombies, they're demons
>>217029217>Naud was born with a large nevus under her right eye. Her parents decided against removing it after doctors informed them that the procedure was "risky."[3][4][5] She has claimed she experienced extensive bullying as a child due to her nevus.[3][4][5]

>>217034730>Carnival of Souls,Elements of that go back to Beirce's Incident At Owl Creek Bridge.
I honestly didn't expect that one Guillermo del Toro's documentary to show real, uncensored cartel flayings, stabbings, beheadings, and dismemberments
>>217029061>In June 2025, Naud joined the cast of Mike Flanagan's upcoming miniseries Carrie, based on the 1974 novel of the same name by Stephen King. Can't stop winning
>>217039533Very nice, thank you for sharing. I am always looking into the original sources for this stuff if they exist. Also, good morning, /hor/.
>>217031644Always nice to see a fellow Jess Franco enthusiast. I recommend reading "Flowers of Perversion" and "Murderous Passions," both by Stephen Thrower, two volumes that explore Franco's filmography in exhaustive detail.
>>217035337You just know
>>217035165Watch Across the River
>>217042146>always looking into the original sources for this stuffTo add to this, I was looking into the origin of books/adaptations of books that inspired Smile, and/or at least have mind virus type monsters that kill you when you look at them/are cursed. So far I got:>An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (1890)>The King in Yellow (1895)>Dracula (1897)>The Monkey's Paw (1902)>Casting the Runes (1911)>At the Mountains of Madness (1936)>Who Goes There? (1938)>I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream (1967)>It (1986)>BLIT (1988)>Ring (1991)>Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (1998)There's the Smile.jpg (2008) and Slender Man (2009) creepypastas. Also looking for movies obviously, but just thought I'd try listing these. The Blair Witch Project came to mind writing this and is a good example. It does a lot of the same stuff without showing the monster.
>>217035165The Town that Dreaded Sundown
40 people burned alive in a Swiss bar on NYC /hor/ in news
>grotesque practical effects>it's just an Italian delicacyMore films like this?
>>217044796There's a Robocop documentary, Robodoc, where they talk about how it took a really long time to shoot the scene where ED shoots the guy in the office. Verhoeven kept saying it needed to be bloodier and wasn't happy, so they stuffed the guy full of spaghetti sauce. But then they ended up having to cut a lot of the blood out to get an R rating.
Nothing better than a Mandy/Drive Angry double feature!
>>217045417At least watching Mandy, anyway. More of a Beyond the Black Rainbow guy.
>>217045440You know, I still haven't seen that one. I need to get on it.
>>217045440> More of a Beyond the Black Rainbow guy.And your gf is more of a black snake kind of gal
>>217042146It's not mind virus so much as waking dream like COS. (also there are several movies that are derivative of Sole Survivor)For infectious curses, etc. there's the 1986 Twilight Zone episode "Need To Know".The conditional curse that has to be passed on to escape it also features in Robert Lewis Stephenson's "The Bottle Imp", in turn inspired by an earlier stage play of the same name, that taken from a german folktale collected by the brothers Grimm.
>>217045885>It's not mind virus so much as waking dream like COSI'm also looking for the genesis of this too since it's somewhat related.>Twilight Zone episode "Need To Know">Robert Lewis Stephenson's "The Bottle Imp"Yes, thank you, this is what I'm looking for.
>>217045885>there are several movies that are derivative of Sole SurvivorOther than Final Destination, which movies? One Missed Call comes to mind.
>>217033697>House of Usher short storyThe 2023 Netflix version fyi.
>>217046379Watching the trailer for this, I can safely say I will never actually watch this. Modern slop is so bad it's unreal. Unless it's Smile ofc.
>>217046429>Unless it's SmileThe next movie is guaranteed to have more POCs in vital roles. The first two movies got away without it by the skin of their teeth for the most part, because the idea was so novel and fresh. Even then, Naomi Scott is half Indian. So, Parker Finn is going to have to up his diversity game if he wants to pull in more numbers. 2 did worse than 1, and the formula is already formulaic unless he does something different, which he has hinted at trying, we'll see.
already stale*
Someone make a new thread while I keep ranting.
>>217046094Passengers (2008)Flight 7500Hex I feel like there's another foreign one too I'm forgetting.>>217046051Haunts Of The Very Rich is another movie with a similar premise.
>>217046751Thank you, appreciated. Similar to Jacob's Ladder, there's The Butterfly Effect (2004), The Jacket (2005), and Source Code (2011).
>Flight 7500Interesting, that one has Amy Smart, who was in the flick Mirrors (2008), which itself similar to Oculus (2013) or Ouija (2014).
Twilight Zone Marathoning it on H&I. The one with the old settler in the top hat who ends up at a service station in the future right now.
