Yes. I noticed that now literally ALL of the navi/humie pairings are male human/fem navi (or may as well be). Jake/Ney, Quaritch/Varang, Spider/Kiri. What did they mean by this
>>
What's the deal with the 'good' humans (scientist guys)? How do they have any resources? E.g their lab, medical tech, o2 masks. Did they just become their own thing after the first movie and split off from the military? Who gives them the money/resources? What are they giving back in return?
>>
>>217030793
The RDA has to keep some degree of optics and plausible deniability that they are not in a genocidal mission to exterminate history's greatest discovery for profit. So, they bring scientists and fund their research, and also pretend to care for rules of engagement at the minimal degree possible.

Last night, whilst my friend and I enjoyed a spot of video games, we entered into a discussion about Avatar. We were comparing and contrasting the two franchises of Avatar and Star Wars. Both are Sci-Fi movies, both are widely-appealing blockbusters, and both were remarkable for their groundbreaking visual effects. And yet, there's a stark contrast in how both were received into the wider culture, and the type of hardcore fans they generated. What does your average audience member remember about Avatar, upon leaving the cinema? Why does Star Wars alone attract a hardcore "nerd" fandom?

What really is the difference between the two? It seemed hard to find a concrete example. My friend concluded that the substantial difference is that the narrative structure of Star Wars was built around its characters.

>>
>>217030938
The difference is that they were released 40+ years apart. Mass culture doesn't work like in the 70s and 80s anymore. Back then, people shared a very well defined mainstream culture. Music, film, fashion. That's why back the decades had a well defined identity.

Nowadays, after the introduction of the smartphone and social media, cultural permanence is very limited, as trends and popularity not only move extremely fast, but they are fed to the masses via algorithms that target different preferences. As a result, mainstream culture barely exists nowadays, people don't listen to what's on the radio or TV, they listen to what an algorithm feeds them on streaming services. Same for TV series.

I agree. I find it weird when people who hate something seem to be more obsessed with it than the fans who loved it. Over analyzing every single thing to the point of nitpicking then applying real world politics in fiction. It's just madness or maybe they have a lot of free time. As for me, when I hate something I don't even bother looking at it. Like Matrix 4, GoT prequels and Rings of Power. Whenever I see clips or pictures of them I completely ignore. I don't even know if they are really that bad because I'm completely disengage.

That's it. That's how Quaritch gets pushed into his Eywa arc despite Varang's hangups.
Think of how feral Quaritch gets about Spider, a son he never even raised who mostly hates him. Varang will give him a daughter, a little blue princess, and Quaritch who doesn't know what he wants will realize what he wants least is for Varang, or the RDA, to burn down Pandora, the only home his daughter can have.
Quaritch is getting FAMILY MAN'd.

It's extremely telling how people start coming up with novelty theories of how the Na'vi aren't "really" indigenous or Eywa is somehow "enslaving" them, because the Na'vi case is unassailable, so they imply that "nobody is native" or that "humans are liberators".

The reason I'm baffled by Avatar haters is that they generally don't even hate blockbusters. So many of them love Marevel and/or Star Wars and other slop. Now I am not claiming the Avatar movies are high art, but in the world of blockbusters they have no equal. How do people shit on Avatar's beautiful message, tragic moments, action spectacle and worldbuilding calling it stupid and simple while gushing for Captain Punch 3: The Repunchening and all the other samey, quippy capeshit that have no vision or style or creativity beside the very basic, surface-level stuff. They always say that Avatar only has the visuals. Avatar has the best visuals in the business. So what does capeshit have? More often than not the CGI is pathetic. But then what do they have? They got nothing on Avatar in any category, but they have those one-dimensional comic book characters that trigger nostalgia in people and I guess that's worth everything. Any person who is able to think critically and objectively would never deem the Avatar movies to be lower than capeshit.
Maybe Avatar was and remains simply too successful for its own good in the eyes of some. Maybe its message is too pure and lacks the edge and cynicism many people confuse for wit or depth.

In what way? Literally most jellyfish in the real world are exactly like that. Just being pushed around by currents mindlessly feeding on as much small stuff that comes by them. Those blimps in Avatar are pretty much giant flying alien versions of that. Nothing about that screams in any way thoughtless design to me. I actually like that it uses its digestive waste products to be airborne while letting its tendrils drag all over the place hoping to catch something. I think that's a cool design.

You would think by movie 3, the aliens would be using better tactics. The writers are relying on Kiri's stupid super powers as a get out of jail free card. It's humans vs Poseidon at this point. There is no path forward without killing Kiri off.

There's your answer.
The simple fact is they hate Avatar because it beats their favorite franchises.
They also hate that it's sincere and doesn't make fun of itself. It isn't insecure like Marvel and they themselves are, and reminds them of how fragile they actually are.
On top of that it hurts their perceived influence. Fact is this is sci-fi for jock sex havers. Normal people whose greatest use of the internet is a few pictures of their cats and dinners, at most. The Avatar haters meanwhile live here and stew and argue for hours on end, and pretend they're the normal ones.

1 character decided to actually use weapons. Everyone else is dropping from up high with bows like they always do. The humans realized this and started using submarine mechs. As long as Kiri is not there, the humans can rape as much whale oil as they please.

If they're trying to go for Native American culture, they forgot that the Native Americans defended their homelands with stolen guns.
>>
>>217033225

Jesus Christ you're the dumbest mongoloid imaginable. Those "submarine mechs" are fishing vessels, for civilian use. Not combat mechs.

>The humans realized this and started using submarine mechs
Which is wrong. The humans don't use those submarines becuase the na'vi attack with bows, they use them for hunting tulkun. The 2nd movie has an extensive sequence showing what each of those different submarines and boats does during the hunt, what roles they have. None of it is in any way related to na'vi and their bows.
You fucking idiot. You moron.

You may have noticed that no explosive torpedoes were used in the whaling scene in A2. They were only used in combat.
>>
>>217033452
The implication is clearly that anon didn't know anything about that and just googled for something they could throw into the argument, you fuckwit.
>>
>>217033103
Woof.
>>
>>217033468
They literally established that they are used for hunting. Later on they used them offensively. Same thing happened in A1 when they wanted to use explosive charges from the mine as airdropped charges. Why is that so difficult for you to understand?
>>
>>217033468
Isn't it incredible how much they need to be spoonfed? Anything less than a fully prepared lecture and they'll miss the point entirely and try to drag you off on retarded tangents.
>>
>>217033372
The point of war isn't to kill the opposing side. Every war has strategic objectives. The humans are there to mine minerals and extract whale oil. The aliens attacked them, so they responded by going underwater. Now they can extract whale oil without deadly conflict. The war is over because the aliens failed to adopt new tactics.

You might argue that the whales adopted a more defensive tactic, but it clearly failed. They were getting slaughtered up until Kira used her movie magic to win the battle. As long as Kira isn't there, the humans win.
>>
>>217033483
Now why would he make such a wrong assumption just to be proven wrong in the end? Seems stupid.
>>
>>217033483
>act incredulous at the fact that someone would use EXPLOSIVES while hunting whales
>get shown sources for how explosives are in fact used while hunting whales

Very interesting. But the fact remains that these explosive tips were used even back in the day, there's nothing here that supports your initial incredulity. You were, in fact, wrong. Please just ACKnowledge it already, it's embarrassing to see you trying to accuse others of ignorance after being proven wrong.
>>
>>217033528
They deployed from base to the island chain with torpedoes on hand, fully prepared to use the vehicles in combat. Combat was part of their original design. Just accept that you were wrong.
>>
>>217033547
>The aliens attacked them, so they responded by going underwater.
Or maybe they went underwater becuase that's where the whales are.
>>
>>217033589

>>

This comment chain started by referring to their first depiction in A2. The whaling ship was commandeered on short notice to go out to the islands as a mobile base for finding Sully. And yet it was already prepared or trivially refitted for a combat scenario. Curious.

I think it's a disgusting mutation of the allegory of the cave. The modern faggot dives into a cave of his own making because the air outside gets cold from time to time.
Others dive in when they hear RDJ say some quip or Taika Waititi taking a mythic and impactful moment and softening it with some retarded shit.
Then when something enters the cave that doesn't match the echoes of the chamber they've crawled into they get angry and frustrated because it implies there's more to the world.
If it's something like Avatar, which is always extremely successful, to the point where it even mogs their own popular faggotry, they get legitimately angry, because that suggest there isn't only more to the world, but that the world is much much bigger than their caves.

Happy New Year, /afag/
I'm continuing my Avatar marathon, a few points so far:

1) Lo'ak is a chronic fuckup, who should've been given "vitamine belt" by Jake the very first time he got himself and his siblings in a dangerous situation. I'm about a halfway through the movie and there's been three situations that could've gotten very ugly all because of Lo'ak being a retard.
2) Jake is not the smartest tool in the shed, but he's trying. Lo'ak's insecurities shoud've been very obvious to him and he should've been there for him from the start instead of neglecting his growing inferiority complex.
3) Neteyam always blames himself for Lo'ak's fuckups and is not treated fairly by Jake too, he shouldn't be made responsible for his younger retard brother's constant fuckups. Jake has the emotional intelligence of a piece of furniture.
4) Zoe's Neytiri is still amazing and looks just as good as a hot milf as she did as a young Na'vi in A1
5) Recom Quaritch is far more entertaining than teh actual Miles Quaritch ever was. He's NOT the same character and it's obvious from his first scenes that his going native journey was set up by Jim from the start. Recom Quaritch being a Na'vi hybrid is also not nearly as ruthless as the original one. And kudos to Stephen Lang, he's the best part of the movie and he had way more to work with in TWOW
6) Recom program is incredibly unethical and straight up cruel to the Recoms themselves. You imprint those Na'vi-Human hybrid clones with memories of dead people. But they are not human, they can't even breath Earth's air without using a respirator, they have a Kuru and they're made to fight people who look like them, eat the same food and breathe the same air. Recom Quaritch' identity crisis is natural and believable.
>>
It's becoming clear that there's a bunch of bot posts in here bumping the thread as advertising. No human could sincerely post this up-your-own-ass shit.

The "secret" to a good SEA wife is to not go for a bar girl or prostitute hanging around tourist areas who are explicitly there to prey on autistic boomer cattle and the new wave of incels with passports.
For a little while longer, most places in SEA still have a high percentage of sweet, feminine women who want to be a wife and mother, only give it up for a man they think they have a future with and consider an average white man well above average.
The caveat is that if you bring them home, there's a higher chance they're infected with evil Sky People extinction culture. You need to go to SEAdora and stay there.

Makes no sense according to its own lore, if the front right or left engine is hit, then the back left or right engine should instantly stop to give the pilot positive control. Actually fuck that whole last battle until the Mangkwan showed up. Another battle that could have been easily won or avoided if the RDA bothered to send a single fucking recon aircraft in. One guy, one fucking guy to take a peak behind the rocks and say “ok all clear”.

The whole fucking RDA fleet doesn’t make sense, your telling me not one of your surface vessels or aircraft have sonar? How are you going to find the whales then radar? I can understand that they use ekranoplan because the whales can’t hear them coming but the fact that seem to use satellite imagery to find whales is ridiculous.

Will add more later

You're looking in the wrong places. Learning a language is worth getting the future you want, but you don't even have to. And I'm not just talking about the Philippines. There are well-developed, non-filthy, very affordable places in SEA where people speak English, they're just not entire countries or places you hear of all the time.
They aren't hard to find, I'm a lazy fuck and I found the perfect one for me. Reading /trv/ archives from 8+ years ago is a good start.

But he did have some development, he call Lo'ak "brother" and is ride or die for him, and he couldn't stand " The Forest Boy" in TWOW
>>
>>217032965
The current cope is that the movie is a flop because it will only be like the 10th highest grossing film of all time instead of top 3
>>
>>217036305
He had very clear and straight forward character development. He disliked Lo'ak for being an outsider and half-tried to get him killed, but eventually fought by his side, risked his life to go save him, and backed Lo'ak up against his own clan.
>My friend's path is my path

This movie literally requires historic level success to justpay back it's costs. That's not cope, that's straight from Jim's mouth.
He didn't start doing interviews talking about being ready to walk away from the series before it even premiered for no reason, dude knew which way the winds were blowing.
>>
>>217036682
Post the quote then if those are Jim's exact words. We know the film's budget roughly and the box office has already more than doubled that in less than 2 weeks.

Will the Mankwan getting guns lead to an age of "musket wars" among the na'vi? The Omaticaya use them already. And I can see the wind traders buying them to protrct themselves (they already ude mechanical swivel guns after all).

Just got to the scene where Lo'ak persuades Neteyam to go after Spider, which ultimately gets him killed. This was his FIFTH potentially lethal fuckup and this was the moment their luck finally ran out. Good job, you retarded little shit, you got your brother killed. You're were right, you'll have to live with this guilt for the rest of your life.
>>
since Jake says the action of the guns is ceramic does that mean it's possible to make kosher guns that use ceramics instead of metal?
Not sure if a ceramic barrel is such a good idea though, but if they can make bolt faces it might work?
>>
>>217037066

Neteyam's weak spot is being brainwashed into feeling responsible for keeping a close eye on his chronic fuckup of a brother. Jake is partly responsible for his sons being disfunctional, but ultimately it's Lo'ak's constant need to prove himself that always gets them all into trouble until it was one too many and it resulted in a family tragedy

Haven't seen Ash and Fire yet. I kind of hated the first Avatar when it first came out, for pretty much the reasons you pointed out. At that time it seemed to me all visuals and shallow on substance. There was a time back in 2015 I thought cape-shit might finally die, but it hung on, and the sea of what we call "block-busters" today are nothing like when I was a kid.

The finally I got around to watching Way of the Water and I loved it. I didn't care if it was deep or wasn't, I just loved it for what it is. Because brings exactly what you said is missing in all those cape-shit films. Not just visuals, but sincerity in the story it believes in.

They're cool. Shame the only ones we see these days are 0.2 seconds before they get a boom boom arrow in the cockpit. Seeing the Toruk throw them around again was sick though

Why? He tries to train them to use fireguns and knowing to be good warriors.

Yeah and they are in a war. What does she mean by that? Maybe Jake is too hard with his sons but he is teaching them to be soldiers so they can survive.
>>
>>217037502
He's neglecting his teenage son's self-esteem issues and constantly lashes out at him instead of trying to resolve his issues by talking to him. He's not training marines, he's dealing with teenagers, and teenagers need another approach entirely, but Jake is not smart enough to adapt his teaching methods to a toxic situation brewing under his roof

I guess if you put them next to each other in a still image like that. But during the movie they are just bro and bro broing over each other. I know I'm not the only one who is bro-blind. Maybe I'm racist though.

>What does she mean by that?
she's not comfortable with her husband reverting back to army (marine) manners when talking to his sons. This is completely reasonable and sane.
It would be much healthier if he had some trusted omaticaya warriors doing the things his sons were doing since he could pull rank and boss them around like soldiers while he acted like a dad to his children

>>217032048
There is absolutely nothing in any recent Marvel movie or other high budget blockbuster like the binding of Isaac parallel in Avatar 3 or the contrast between Lo'ak entering the whale's mouth in 2 vs. the RDA guys drilling into the dead whale's mouth for their amrita. These are not great movies, but they legit have artistic ambitions well beyond your usual Hollywood sloppa blockbuster. It is really remarkable to me just how much hate a set of 6/10 but very good looking and imaginative movies get.
