Just didn’t feel like the finale to me. There weren’t any real stakes, the villains were dispatched with ease, the big emotional death happened after the conflict was resolved. Even the big military plotline that the show started with went absolutely nowhere at all. Season 4’s finale felt more like the last episode of the show than this did.

I guess I wouldn’t be so upset if I didn’t genuinely love season 1 so much. These characters didn’t do much at all by the final season and this is basically the last uber-popular TV show of this type that we’re gonna get in our age of short-form video slop. It’s the end of the road and it felt so empty.

Problem with that is that, first, the body was already there. Vecna was using it as his base the entire season, but there were still monsters as late as episode 6.
Second, it used the same strategy in season 3, but had the good sense to leave Billy unabsorbed so it could have a smaller unit in play. So it's dumber in season 5. Even one little demobat would have more value flying around than adding +1 to the boss' hitpoints.

This reads like two guys who don’t understand their character and are stuck in the seed of their original idea of Season 1. Season 1 El was the representation of childlike wonder, combining ET with an Akira child and thrusting her into the world as a fish out of water/magical girlfriend trope for Mike worked and worked well. But starting in season 2 she began a trajectory away from the Eggo eating innocent stranger and towards growing up her own way. From sneaking off to be with her rough and punky pajeeta sister, to fooling around with Mike, to hanging with Max and being independent, to confronting her past and embracing her role as a hero… she wasn’t that cute alien anymore, she became a woman, a real girl Pinnochio style. Her final scene with Hopper is her directly spelling that out to him. I’m fine with her choosing to leave Mike and Hopper, however it went down, but I don’t think it’s accurate to say she represented childlike wonder anymore. Her choice was, itself, an attempt at maturity.
Though, it does seem a bit odd when you draw parallels between her anger at Hopper being ready to die for her when she was ready to do the same for everyone else.
