There was no tension, there was no point at which any of them were really in danger, they faced zero resistance along the way, and almost none of them even needed to be there because they barely contributed to the fight. All of this would have been resolved with building out the climactic battle to be a multi-front assault against overwhelming odds like the two movies mentioned.
