I've seen things you skxawng wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Polyphemus. I watched Dragonfire glitter in the dark near Hell's Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like steam in fire. Time to die.

I'm glad that Jim made Jake stop on his own when he was about to murder Spider and make Neytiri get to them just a moment late. Otherwise we'd always have a question "What if she didn't stop him?". Meanwhile, with the way the scene played out we have no doubt that both of them are NOT the kind of people who'd slaughter an innocent kid like a sacrificial lamb. It was a test of character for both of them.

Reminder that Venezuela is a resource-rich (oil) jungle, much like Pandora, and that the original operation on Pandora centered around strip mining. One of the very first things we see in the first movie is a giant copy-paste job of the Bagger 288, in action on Pandora. And then we don't see much more of it afterwards, and large scale strip mining in general is sort of abandoned.

I think of the humans in the first movie as falling into four classes: para-military/security, corporate/suits, science, but then also the mining grunts, who we barely meet as characters, even though the miners are performing the core work which is the real purpose of the human operation. The next two movies try to correct this (show the tradesmen) by showing the whaling operation in detail. Showing the people doing the commercial grunt work is also directly from The Abyss.

Just saw it with my dad and little bro, it was their first Avatar and they loved it and so did I though it felt very similar to the previous movie. Does anyone have pictures of Eywa when Kiri, Tuk, and Spider see her? I'd like a closer look, I think I saw eyebrows which pure Na'vi don't have.

It's a parallel to the satanic snake convincing Adam and Eve to go against God's will and bite from the fruit of knowledge. They will be cast out of Eden and cursed to suffer.

The final act was complete ass. And the rest wasn't much better.
Very disappointed in how undercooked the Fire clan was and how Varang basically became Quaritch's henchman after becoming "equals".
I suppose the Wind traders were cool and so too were the scenes at the human base.

Yes, only those with human DNA/5 fingers have them. Lo'ak inherited them but Tuk and Neteyam didn't.

How could Eywa has the face of a human?, what would be your theory if it was like that?
>>
>>217101514
>Why?
Contrary to the common criticism, these movies aren't radical, self-loathing, extinctionist propaganda about how all humans need to an hero immediately to save the baby sea turtles. The sequels are space fantasy, not hard sci-fi. The themes and characters are what matter. These movies are going to end on an optimistic note with humanity being redeemed and saving Earth to remind us that the na'vi aren't aliens, they're us. Pandora isn't fake, we live on it.

Kiri is not Grace literally, she just has her exact genetics. It's why her having Siggy's voice makes sense. I think it's basically Eywa seeing a good candidate and choosing to incarnate herself through planting herself as a child into Grace's "empty" avatar.

>>
>>217102071
I feel like the only reason this is even a thing is because Sig has history with James Cameron because of Aliens, because a woman in her 70s voicing and doing mocap for a teenage character is just bizarre. Same with Kate Winslet, she did fine as Ronal but it just seems like a random choice beyond Kate Winslet being in Titanic.
>>
So do we agree that Kiri literally has the Voice from Dune when she tells Lo'ak to put Spider down? He won't listen to her initially for good reason since her request seems nonsensical, then she says "Do as I say" and her voice is all distorted and weird, then Lo'ak obeys immediately without saying anything. It feels like something that gets glossed over because it's followed by something even more wild.
>>
Did anyone else get a stiffy during the scene where Quaritch was teaching Varang to shoot?
>>
>>217102234
I don't think it's the only reason. Having a character be an exact clone of another character and having the same actor play both is not really crazy, the only discrepancy is the age difference. When Kiri grows up she will basically look exactly like Grace's avatar.

I'm going to see Fire and Ash for a second time, probably in IMAX 3D. Is there anything I should keep an eye out for?
Way of Water had a few HFR 48FPS scenes that looked great, especially in 3D. Does 3 have them too?
>>
>>217102989
If Eywa sends every animal on Pandora after them then the RDA would still lose initially like they did at the end of the first film. But a shitload more Na'vi would die because Jake taught them many of the tactics to fight them and their vehicles.

Airborne battle scenes are a highlight. the 3D really sells the feeling of depth and sensation of falling
>>
>>217103209
Fire and Ash has a ton of HFR scenes. Almost all the flying scenes and swimming scenes look incredibly smooth. For me one of the most visually striking moments is Spider fighting against the ash tribe guy on the airship during the raid. The scale is crazy and there's so much going on in the screen with some good slow mo and well placed zoom-ins.

When you say things like this, is it because you think they're exaggerating? Cameron is just pointing out things that happen in reality. Whales have been hunted in exactly this manner and killed with just as much disregard. Real life people were far, far more evil. Hell Quaritch and his team were polite nice guys compared to reality. Actual torture and execution of the Na'vi that were hiding Jake wouldn't scratch the surface in comparison. It's pretty cheesy all the do is burn down some hutts that are easily rebuilt.

It's an obvious dramatic thing to do at this point. The detail I feel ashamed about not realizing ahead of time is how Spider requests to keep Quaritch's metal dog tag. Not out of any concern for him, but instead to use it as a tool for his jailbreak.

Also, now that I re-watch this moment, the angry woman pulping egg-shaped plants compares directly with Ripley flipping out in the hive. (The whole man-teaches-woman automatic weapon thing is an obvious redux of the earlier scene, where Hicks trains Ripley).

About two weeks have passed, I am mulling the time for my second screening.

Why did the shuttle approach Bridgehead like this? It's a VTOL so it could just descend from straight above the landing zone. But even if they had to approach from outside the perimeter, why so close above the wall? That thing is huge and those engines are fucking powerful and it's so close it might end up just blowing off a person or vehicle if they have unlucky timing.

The sad thing for me is that I didn't get PAD nearly as bad this time, because the movie just isn't as good I was still very happy watching that initial "floating mountain" image, coming back to the world, that always feels good. Maybe on a second view once I get the little details and like it more, but still. I have a clear memory of going back to shitty real life each time after the original, and this is why I watched the original seven times in the theater. The sequel had plenty worth liking, but didn't hit the same. The climax at the end was the nice emotional bit, and I wanted to re-watch to fully get the details. I'll end up watching 3 3-4 times in the theater.

I wonder if anyone has made the connection between the Odyssey trailer and the Avatar planet. The Odyssey trailer (which I actually quite liked, the only thing I liked in the trailer sequence) briefly shows Polyphemus, the cyclops who eats Odysseus's men. The Polyphemus planet in Avatar is a palette-swap of Jupiter, so named because it has the one big eye.

While we're on the Polyphemus topic, please note that Polyphemus is the planet, while Pandora is a moon (or planetary body), but not a planet. Close shots of other moons (like the Galilean moons) made me curious about the other moons of Polyphemus. I want to re-watch the entire cycle while paying attention to other moons in the sky. Solar eclipse is also a much more common thing on Pandora, since it's close to the huge Polyphemus.

Yeah they didn't get the surface tension right in A1 but in A2 the water looked great. Still not perfect but insanely good. I think water splashes, especially when it's foamy and intereacting with the surface is still not quite there. But to me it looked better in A3 then A2.

there is an astonishing increase in fidelity in a3 compared to a2 despite a3 only being released 3 years later.
it feels like every shot in a3 is a hero shot, especially when it comes to characters. all the side characters in a3 are done to an incredibly high level of detail. you can really tell they got all of their production pipelines figured out by now and are able to push characters and environments to never seen before heights.

basically every process that goes into actually producing every single frame of the movie that we end up seeing in the theater at the end.
avatar 2 took such a long time because cameron wanted to push performance capture and visual fidelity way beyond what was possible when avatar 1 was made. they had to create and come up with new tools, software and cameras to actually make the film possible. and with avatar 3 they are now able to use all those new tools to their fullest potential because they don't have to create and figure them out first.

I have a clear memory of the exact moment when I fell in love with the original film. It's when Neytiri enters and kills/scatters the viperwolves, and tosses Jake's fire into the pond. But that's not the exact moment.

The exact moment is the quiet, just after, when we look at the cool colors of Pandora's forest, and just wonder about it with Jake for a bit. That's when it happened, "Oh my god, this is cool." That beat of quiet.

WoW has some of this wonder and quiet, especially as Lo'ak and Payakan meet. The sequel is careful to give us some real wonder around this point, and as I reflect on the sequel, the Lo'ak stuff off alone with Payakan is the best. The third film has to move things along, and be very action-y plot-ty. There's a beat of quiet in there somewhere, but it's not the same.

I wish there had been a scene early in the movie where Ronal and Neytiri have a heart to heart. Ronal deduces Neytiri has much hate in her heart and says that is not the way of Eywa or the Na'vi. After much back-and-forth Neytiri breaks down. She says if she doesn't cling to her hate of the sky people her grief will swallow her up and crush her. Ronal points out she still has a family and they desperately need her. She can fight to protect them. But fighting to indulge her hatred will only destroy herself. The two have a good cry and the scene ends

I think that could've reinforced the scene between her and Jake where she talks about hating sky people. And jake gives her the same advice Ronal does. That helps open her eyes to spider.

This man is the biggest chad in movie history.

>Still follows the Marine code to bring Jake to trail and fights (whether right or wrong in doing so) even AFTER he's dead. Regular marines simply die, not this man

>Is a caring, patient, and forgiving father despite the fact he's under no obligation whatsoever as Spider's actual father died and he's just a copy

>Strolls up to the absolute insane and dangerous Fire Navi camp shirtless and unarmed like it's nothing and is like "Yo, wanna blow up shit? I got a flame thrower too!"

>Is invited to the vagina tent of the totally unpredictable and dangerous as fuck tribe leader Varang where he gets high with her

>And because she's insane because she's losing her religion because of the volcano or whatever and thinks she can shoot him because he's shown her how to shot a rifle once (fucking women lol)...does he panic though? No.

>There's this PERFECT moment when he looks her straight in the eyes of a woman who thinks she's better than everyone else and the only one fit to lead and tells her "What you REALLY want is an equal". And you see it in her reaction...she wants to just kill him for basically saying "You need a man", she wants do deny it...but she can't. No matter how much she hates it, how impossible it should be, she's met the ultimate chad and her blue navi pussy is now his.

>Though they don't show the sex (because woman would be soaking the theater seats and their dates would be crying, you do see her cuddled up to him

>Isolated crazy tribe totally accepts him in no time flat. Now his new crew, so he takes them in the middle of the most secure human settlement that have been at war with the Navi since day one. Some general bitch tries to tell him they have to go and she puts that cunt in her place

>Surrounded, he jumps into a energy vortex that rips massive ships apart, but you know he'll be fine because this is fucking Quaritch
>>
>>217108374
>why don't the characters in the story operate using my perfect knowledge of events they were not present for?!
Because a three-hour blockbuster deserves better than to spend half of the film covering redundancies and repeated plot points from its prequels. Like I said, it could have been a perfectly good film dedicating the entire third act to rescuing Jake and Spider, but everything after they escape is a complete retread of Avatar/Way of Water.

Quaritch operates according to his ironclad masculine frame because it's all he has. He's always competent, he's always doing what needs to be done, he's always in control. He's all in, all the time.
Even before he died he was like this. Did Quaritch seem like a man who had much of a life outside of his career? Have we even seen him to have friends? No, just subordinates and superiors.
Now he's a big blue alien abomination possessed by the digital ghost of a dead man. Nothing makes sense and his motives are all over the place. He's desperate for connection with the son of that dead man. He's desperate for revenge against that man's killers, who raised that son. Mentally, he's going on 60 but he's put his dick in alien crazy, hung out with her tribe, painted himself and his dragon in their warpaint and presented himself to his human superior.
What makes Quaritch so gigabased is also what's keeping him sane and what's keeping him imprisoned. I really hope we see Lang stress his acting chops with a total Quaritch breakdown and rebirth in 4.

I like how Cameron keeps changing Jake's body during all three movies to reflect his activities and passage of time.
In the first movie he became way more lean and muscular by the end of it, because of all his training.
In the second one he became slobbier cause 16 year of chill life with the bunch of kids.
In the third one he burnt his fat, giving himself more square frame and musclues without looking too lean. Classic for a 40yo guy who hit the gym.

Between Na'vi with the bow and human with the gun in a jungle Na'vi will almost always win.
Just count how many people have Jake and Neytiri murdered in these movies despite having just a bow, spear or a knife.
These are still 8ft tall agile and strong creatures.
>>
>>217109317
Isn't what makes them hard to kill their strong bones and not much else? Giant arrows and high caliber rounds from machine gun turrets and recom/mech-sized firearms are what we see killing Na'vi 99% of the time, and they're always down in one hit like they were big humans.
Even the strong bones thing seems to have been abandoned for the sake of uncomplicating combat.

Social retard-kun, the whole reason she's unhinged in 3 is because her half-hybrid son was just killed by humans. She's saying things she doesn't mean (or at least things that are overwritten by her love) out of hysterical woman grief.
You see her having a breakdown and trying to save Spider from Jake after being told Spider living will doom Pandora, and you don't think she cares about her actual blood children?

Why would they have a word for that prior to humanity's arrival? Everything they've known belongs to Eywa.
Only thing I can think of is other heretic marauder clans like Varang's, but you'd think she'd be quite the exception, and she also only turned the Mangkwan that way very recently.
