>When I set out to make Higher Ground, I kept returning to the kind of purity and emotional honesty that Carl Th. Dreyer achieved in The Passion of Joan of Arc. There's a transcendence in his work - a way of stripping a character down to her core that I desperately wanted to honor.>It was never my intention to recreate Dreyer's film, but I was deeply influenced by his fearlessness in revealing inner religious turmoil. I wanted to bring that same level of vulnerability and spiritual searching to my character.

>>217108077Also, skimming the letterboxd reviews, the amount of people calling it "Confederate propaganda" because it (and most films about the Civil War) don't completely disavow the entire southern half of the United States, and instead take their perspective as the underdog of the civil conflict... the movie came out 60 years after the Confederacy ceased to exist. The rest is some pretty dodgy bluescreen and something without a lot of substance which is kinda what happens when you turn something that is only barely a novella with one character into a 90 minute movie. Feel like watching an Ozu today. He's not my fav but i'm just in that mood.
>>217112196I can't tell if his previous film was supposed to be chud-coded or actually sympathetic to its whore protagonist.

>>217113248I am kinda entertained desu.
I just experienced something that was so profound that I firmly believe it is God telling me I need to change my ways. I was in tears a moment ago. When I got home, I instantly wrote in my journal no more drugs, women or gambling. I’ve told myself this before, but never meant it like I do now. I’ve always believed in God, but never lived like I did. Films for this feel? Im changing my ways!
hello guys time to keep watching kino
>>217113331Have you seen Until the End of the World?
>>217112215Neither, actually, and she wasn't even a whore. She just got bored of the relationship and left, that's all.Kinda surreal how chuds seem to think women leaving = whores, it pretty much shows they've never been in a relationship.
I've never been in a relationship so when I watch films about it, be it men or women, it's such an alien thing to me, don't mind it but don't prefer it.

>>217113620Love drugstore cowboy so much. I rec’d it here before and said watching it made me feel like I relapsed with the whole vibe, the mise en scene, sound design and Matt Dillon, James Le Gros, and Max Perlich were great. It seemed like they really were junkies. The cool colors too and of course Burroughs. Love Gus. Poor Bob.
>>217113627I might watch another Ferrara joint, a newer one I haven’t seen yet. Good rec. I’ve shot my radio out before too. We’ve all been there.

Does anyone else make gangster movies like Marty does? I love how his gangsters are all charming and funny. He is so good at making you feel instantly endeared towards them and they remind you of friends. So many good conversations in those movies. It sort of reminds me of early Pasolini especially Accattone. Cassavettes is the only one who comes especially Mikey and Nickey, but he didn’t direct that.
>>217113411No but I will add it.Shamefully I've been watching the fallout tv show as a guilty pleasure....
>>217114893It's not bad.You should watch Wenders' other road movies before that one though. It's very much the culmination of that style of his and his other road movies are good. He's the king of the genre. Alice in Cities is my personal favorite.
>>217114883It’s crazy how watching a 2-3 hour movie of Marty’s can make you feel like you’ve known these guys forever. I think a lot of it has to do with the amount and method of improvisation Scorsese and his casts do. Please if anyone knows any rec me some gangster movies like this.
>>217108703Stastny konecHori, ma panenkoKristove rokyDrak sa vraciaBalada o siedmich obesenych
>>217114883Tbh, Melville is superior to Marty, but his gangster films lack the thuggish atmosphere that Marty creates, because with Melville you feel you're watching hardened pros do crime as a job, instead of an idealized lifestyle of machismo and excess.
>>217114945Also this is definitely what Scorsese intended to do. He grew up around these guys. They were not necessarily made men, but they were associated. He wanted to portray them in a way he saw them. He enjoyed being around them even knowing the type of things they did. That’s another reason his movies are like that.
>>217114973Ya, but if you read a lot of Mafia books written by people who knew or people like Henry hill, they all acted just like this at least in New York, Chicago and Philly. I’ve researched a lot about the mafia. Goodfellas and mean streets aren’t too far from what supposedly happened based on certain accounts even some of the jokes actually were said. It’s more real to life at least in that setting. Ya I love Melville too of course but in a different way. I think they are both top tier directors.

>>217115319Jean Simmons also hated working with Otto, to the point she couldn't even look at the screen later in life at an Angel Face screening because it brought her too many bad memories. Meanwhile the mega based GOAT Gene Tierney worked with the man four or five times no problem.

>>217102950Varang is queen of /film/
>>217119470Only good part of this flick.
the worth of the avatar movies is actually no worth at all. It is a tech achievement that shows you how far away is the courage, writing and money part to ever actually do interesting science fiction that's fantastical. I am not talking Dune, I am not talking shitty "sci" "fi" but stuff completely new to film. They will never do it. Avatar is tech competent but a false hope.
off topic shit again? here we go

>>217120282It's gay, histrionic shit. It is to film as Browning is to poetry in the way that Joyce notes.
