I was thinking whether Cameron could've even really done anything else with the sequels other than follow the family. If you made a story about a different human protagonist showing up, you would have to retread a lot of ground of Jake's story (already done with Quaritch to an extent). If you made a Na'vi protagonist you would lose a lot of relatability with the audience and the Na'vi might just become annoying organically acting out every facet of their culture instead of seeming novel as viewed through human eyes.
