>>217126836So do we believe that she was also scared when she was brought before the human camp with Jake in custody? She mentioned to her own troops to stand tall and not to act scared, but I got the impression that she also felt a little scared. It seems like Varang is being painted as having to save face and project security among a completely foreign and rather scary world of the humans. Also can be connected to her insecurities around death and her connection to Eywa. While I would have liked her to be more aggro and taking a more dom role in this whole thing, I do think having her shown as a more complex character and not a one-dimensional girlboss is better for the storytelling. Here's hoping for some further growth in the next film.

>>217127120Oh she's go to grow alright. grow a baby in that belly!
>>217127120I think she wants to be a Sky Person. Maybe not literally, but that city of glass and steel and LEDs was everything she's been searching for since a volcano nuked her entire worldview. Sky People are power. They're domination. They're the triumph of will over faith. She doesn't just want rifles and flamethrowers, she wants civilization, because it means the grinding into dirt of everything she hates. When she snapped at her men to stand up straight, I think it was less "don't show fear" and more "don't embarrass me."
>>217127120>She mentioned to her own troops to stand tall and not to act scaredSome of the Ash lackeys holding up the IFF badges like they're some kind of crucifixes to ward off an unspoken evil was a nice touch. >N-No attack, Sky people! W-We friendly!

>>217127120Varang was most probably unnerved at the sight of all the gunships, the surrounding bright megastructures, patrolling AMP suits at the distance, the many armed guards with guns and Skel Suits, and all the stuttering flashes from the throngs of people swarming in like ants (her and the Ash guys could've mistaken the flashes as gunfires or muzzle flashes at first). But as soon as she saw >>217127442, her own grunts cowering at the human spectacles, it was like looking at a mirror for her. And she quickly realized then that they couldn't afford to look like that at all, or they'd have to suffer the consequences of appearing more vulnerable by their superior peers. >>217127370 summarized it perfectly in that it'd be unbecoming of her matriarchal position of the Ash Clan if the humans see that she's a leader of cowardly DYEL twinks, so it's understandable that she'd set her minions straight. Even the cuffed Jake himself was seen walking proud and tall with his head up when he was strolling down the red carpet along with Quaritch, Varang, and Ardmore. Nobody could afford to look weak at that point of time with all wary eyes and recording cameras trailing their every move. In the end, I don't think Varang was that horrified than she was in utter awe. She had embraced human equipment long before the capture of Sully, when she captured the kids at the forest and when Quaritch won her heart at the tent scene. She knew Quaritch had her back. The stare and the chin raise Varang gave Ardmore demanded nothing but subservience.

>>217128485well I thought it was because Jake captured and would be sent hack to earth to face trial BUT NOOOOOOOO Jake just escapes easily
>>217128644Jake should have died in this one. It would have been Cameron's Ned Stark moment. Actual stakes and wondering wtf is going to happen next. Now it just seems more quaritch v Jake but with older kids

>>217128388They're proportionally smaller than a BHC but with a direct comparison, they're around the same size or very slightly larger. Thus humans and avatars are similarly hung like a horse by Na'vi reckoning.
>>217128694Jake vs Quaritch is done, they don't have another prolonged CQC fight in them. In A4 the conflict will be Quaritch and Jake fighting humans independently with an unstated truce. Only at a point between the end of A4 and beginning of A5 will they have a unified objective.
>>217128741Neytiri never stood a chance to resist Jake.
>Speaking to Empire ahead of the Dec. 19 release of the much-anticipated Avatar: Fire and Ash, the three-time Oscar winner discussed how Avatar — already expanded into video games and a theme park at Walt Disney World — could explore further backstory, an idea he’s already broached with Disney.>“I said, ‘Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that’s essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn’t have expected from that world,'” the Titanic helmer explained. “There might even be an animated feature in there — it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature.”>“A good early example is The Animatrix, where they went afield in the Matrix world. These are all great examples for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar.” As such, these projects could offer “backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want.”Bros we could be entering the Avatar decade

>>217129019It's an obvious cultural inspiration/place to go, and it sort of lines up with how the Alien franchise has been told up to this point.-"Eywa" = "Yahweh", a simple reversal of the abrahmic sky daddy god.-The character name "Grace Augustine" is fully loaded with christianity. "Grace" is a specific theological state where you get right with god. Augustine was a theologian and saint.-In the third movie, one of the Ash people pokes Quaritch in his obliques with a spear, drawing a bit of blood. This is like the Lance of Longinus for Evangelion fans, or: the holy spear.-Varang's tight little horizontal binder is sometimes worn with a vertical stripe of paint or paints, clearly forming a cross.-The third film specifically makes general appeals to faith and belief, especially the opening argument between Jake and Ney (and Jake really ought to know better, since he lived the proof of his god at the climax of the first film).-In the first film, when the much larger Neytiri cradles Jake's weak human body, this pose is taken directly from the Pieta (mary cradles the dead jesus). The Michelangelo sculpture is the best known example, but it's a genre thing with other instances.-"Tulkun". The sound of this word is suspiciously close to the jewish theological concept of "tikkun". In rough strokes, the jewish/kabbalastic notion of tikkun is: the world is broken and wrong, and various troublesome things in the world (qlippoth) obstruct our clear view of reality. Therefore, we should endeavor to repair the broken world that we inhabit. -And then of course, the Na'vi are waging jihad against the occupying humans. You can stretch it any way you like, but the abrahamist stuff is a major informer.

>>217129191
>>217127120>>217128285Commodore Perry entering Japan moment. The scale of the threat's immense. But that force potential practically guarantees victory in her mind. She can be the liberator of Pandora and godslayer of Aiwa. The conflict's already setup with clans refusing to use human weaponry. And that battle in Fire & Ash was a Pyrrhic victory at best with the casualties. Many will defect to the lava cultists just to fight sky fire with sky fire alone. Others will lose faith and become cynical and nihilistic enough to defect on that basis. Varang's gang are compelling because they're the most human Na'vi, and Cameron will have to make that framing plausible for clan civil war to add more variables and antagonists into the mix ... Spider's a bigger liability than just facilitating human biological adaptation to Pandoran atmosphere: a hostile human with that fungus and the tsahaylu braid linking up to Eywa could potentially give infinite live intelligence, past, present and future for military exploitation.

Felid ayylmaos with demonically possessed yellow eyes. Eywa Demiurge hive mind. Edenic planet of noble savages vs. our outcast Cain humanoids ... that "hamsa" eye on Varang's palm and all the tropes around her and the Ash Clan are more legibly occult and 'satanist' than the otherwise very common, tired tropes on the other side of the equation, which is kind of why the film's chugging along at the box office in this state of the domestic/international economy and geopolitical state of play.

>>217130866

>>217132926>with Spider there, they were bound to lose since the humans would inevitably be able to breathe Pandora's air.Plothole in the movie (again)I don't see the big deal. Many humans including Spider have been able to live on Pandora for a decade using respirators. Sure it's uncomfy but still. Also I don"t get why the humans absolutely need Spider after his first stay in the base. I guess it's better to have the live "specimen" but they should already have all the scans, samples, tests they could get from him to study his biology.
>>217133141It's obvious the sequels will play into it. A way is found that allows humans to live there, that's a huge deal. It makes full colonization viable on a planetary scale, not just as resource extraction. The plot having Spider being scanned is deliberate. I suspect the next movie will have an even stronger human presence and maybe an even more overtly military one (as opposed to just RDA mercs). The movies clearly have these events escalate gradually to a (future) breaking point.
>>217133113Those are mostly shitposts or people supporting humanity and its need for a new home. Nobody actually supports the corporations in Avatar. They are to blame for Earth's state in the first place.
>>217133141You can't colonize the planet like that. Sure the RDA can support how many thousands of hundreds of thousands of people with oxygen masks. Millions though? Billions? It's not viable for a large scale colonization, let alone for all humanity to move from it's broken homeworld. It's doubtful any civilian would even be willing to colonize a planet they can't even breathe in.
>>217130589do you think they make his eye smaller due to the backlash from the Alita movie?
>>217132879It was a desperate wife move but they're targeting Toruk Makto for a reason. Without Jake around to unite the tribes (and his family to call on mama Eywa), the rest of Pandora is pretty much boned, even if Jake is unwilling to see himself and his role as that important.>>217133141You could chalk it up to Jake being a jarhead who assumes they need to keep Spider, but even if they didn't have the full scans, just the fact that they've confirmed humans breathing Pandoran air is attainable means they're all fucked and there's going to be an acceleration and upscaling of Pandora colonization efforts.
>>217133295>>217133141They could always dissect Spider for studies and there is nothing Quaritch can do to stop them. He's not Colonel Miles Quaritch, he's literally RDA's product and its property and he only begins to realize it in the second half of FaA
>>217133113The first film set the tone with the literal line, "the aliens went back to the their dying world." That IS a fucked up fate for humanity considering the hundreds of millions of wannabe Eywaboos still stuck there, even if the alternative is sacrificing Pandora to extend Earth's lifespan, probably temporarily and without curing any of the cancers driving humanity to self-destruction.Now that it seems likely Earth will be given a future with its own version of Eywa, rooting for the blue guys doesn't have the "I'm rooting for the expedited destruction of my own race" thing going on.
>>217133342>"the aliens went back to the their dying world."It's not fucked up, it's literal truth>even if the alternative is sacrificing Pandora to extend Earth's lifespanHow is this supposed to be Jake's problem? He has nothing and nobody left on Earth and everything and everyone he cares about is on Pandora.
>>217133341>He's not Colonel Miles Quaritch, he's literally RDA's productI think this is an oversimplification. Everyone treats him like the colonel, including himself, although he tries to deny it sometimes. Even when the general was antagonizing him, which would be a great place for her to talk down to him by treating him like a product rather than a solider, she still didn't do that, she just questioned his ability as a solider to get things done and his allegiance because of the whole bringing a whole Navi tribe with him thing. We haven't really seen any discrimination towards him for being Navi now.The only time the movie itself questions his identity as the colonel is in regards to his grudge against Jake and his willingness to see things with his new eyes rather than a dead man's. Other than that he wasn't shown to be alienated from the rest of humanity in any way.
>>217133394It's not about Jake, it's about the audience rooting for Jake when, if this were real, it'd be them or their descendants left behind on Earth. You don't have to agree with the reaction but it makes sense how some people were disgruntled by it, especially in what's become a reactionary climate of identity cults and people advocating for the destruction of their own in-groups.
>>217133440>The only time the movie itself questions his identity as the colonelThree times:1) Him talking with Jake in the forest2) Jail conversation scene3) When he drinks with his new ash friends saying "WE are the fire"
>>217133440The difference with him (as opposed to Jake in the first movie) is that Quaritch has no normal human life to go back to. He is permanently in the navi body and he has no way to opt out. And that body is only "useful" to the RDA if it keeps fighting. It's not like he can retire or do something else. There is simply no framework for it. Unless the have a way to clone his old body and transfer the mind (using the same method) back into it. But even then what is that even? Jake willingly decided to forgo his human life (where he was a cripple on top of it) which wasn't worth anything at all at that point and go native for a full tribal navi experience. He essentially got a huge upgrade. But Quaritch, comparatively speaking, got a downgrade. He was a human that can do anything he wanted in the human civilization. He could earn money, retire, choose a different profession, cycle back to Earth, etc... sure he was a career soldier but it was a job as well. Now he's stuck AS his job. He has no other option.Which, of course, means he will turn native as well. He just wasn't thinking that far ahead since his mission was to get Jake. But what about after the mission? He'd be stuck in that body doing ops forever? It's like in the Severance show. He'd be stuck in his "work" mode in perpetuity.
>>217133508Four times. The final "well this is awkward" scene at the flux when Jakes saves him and Spider. It is also poetic that he will be reborn by throwing himself into "fire". Next movie will just find him living with Varang and her tribe full time as a tribal leader.
>>217133508>>217133543
>>217133508The first two are basically the same conversation continued.>When he drinks with his new ash friends saying "WE are the fire"I am not taking that one very seriously personally. Not only was his partying before this but more importantly it was after he aligned the tribe with the RDA. The ash people themselves and the RDA also have very similar goals. Most importantly though, the ash people's ideology completely contradicts that which he discussed with Jake in the other two. One is about getting closer to Eywa and connecting with it in a way he never could as a human, while the other is antagonizing her completely.
>>217133525>But what about after the mission?Imagine if A4 starts and Selfridge's plan is to just avoid Jake, to try not to antagonize him and maybe even approach him for a truce while he waits for the real muscle to arrive after the humans-breathing-Pandoran-air thing blows up, but this means he's either upholding Ardmore's orders to permanently ground Quaritch or even detaining him because he doesn't trust him not to run off like he did at the end of A3.The pre-timeskip conflict of A4 becomes Quaritch finally going rogue after being stripped of his purpose and his freedom, and it's him and Mangkwan vs the RDA while ironically Sully&friends and the rest of the Na'vi are getting a breather.
>>217133584The real Quaritch would've never say "we" in relation to any Na'vi while wearing their warpaint and a loincloth. Are you that anon who keeps trying to convince everybody that Quaritch and Navitch are the same person?
>>217133342Eh there's probably another planet they can go to considering space travel exists
How does spider eat if he has to have his mask on all the time
I think you guys are a bit too premature in thinking Quaritch is going full tribal. The only one antagonizing hi inside the RDA was the general and she is dead now with no way to stop him from doing what he wants, including the rest of her high command . Nobody else inside the RDA has really treated him in any way that would justify him going full tribal. He seems more than willing to continue work with the RDA, and Varang is the same.Don't forget we know he is the villain for the upcoming movie as well. And he really can't be much of a villain with a single tribe of Navi an Varang and no supply of weapons from the RDA. How many ash Navi are even left at this point? They were dropping like flies the whole movie and there was just a village of them. We saw many Navi tribes uniting again in this movie and there weren't that many of them either, let alone a single tribe that had by far the most casualties.
>>217133608No. They are not the same person, but saying that they are completely different people is not right either. Only Quaritch can decide to what degree they are the same, and he continues to flip flop on that.
>>217133656takes the mask off, puts food in his mouth, puts the mask back on, chews, swallows, takes a deep breath and repeats all the steps until he's finishedProbably gets one hell of a dizzy spell after every meal though
>>217133656stuffs all his food inside the bottom of his mask and slurps it up like a pig at the troughthen Kiri licks his face clean
>>217133525Reminds me of androids from Bladerunner.
>>217133677Jim specifically set up an identity crisis for Navitch and he also said he's going to go through an incredible transformation throughout the whole saga
>>217133720What are the replicants for? How are they physically different from humans? Does someone just replace natural humans with replicants for the hell of it? I don't think the movies ever explain any of that
>>217133656There's a scene that shows Spider drinking water off a Metkayina canteen, and what he did was hold his breath, take off his mask, drink, put his mask back on, and breathe. He most probably does the same for food.
>>217133656what does Spider eat considering na'vi food is poisonous to humans?
>Quaritch's worsening identity crisis>Varang's tragic backstory, loss to Kiri and she's a woman>neither have killed a named character (Quaritch isn't OG Quaritch so his kills don't count)They're both getting redeemed.
>>217133772And technically, it was Lyle who shot Neteyam
>what does Tonowari gain at the end of FAA?
>>217133772Who did the original even kill? Some unnamed forest na'vi and grace? Oh he also blew up the tree of souls.
>>217133770Infinite stock of MRE Menu #6 Beef Frankfurters and MRE Menu #4 Cheese and Veggie Omelet
>>217133725Sure I get that. But his point of defection is are the ash Navi. Which are clearly never going to join up with Jake and co. And they are not exactly a big enough threat on their own without the RDA.Quaritch is definitely changing, and I can see him getting progressively more integrated with the ash Navi to the point where he views them more as him home rather than the RDA. But him leaving the RDA as of now is too premature. They still need each other, and again, he has no reason to forego his alliance with the RDA when even Varang and the tribe itself benefit from it. And the only one against that decision is dead now. Varangs goal itself is to mimic the RDA in a way and conquer Eywa, she doesn't even want to remain full tribal herself. It also just doesn't make sense for movie 4 to start with him going full tribal having abandoned the RDA completely. He can't play the role be is given in the story that way.
>>217133804For named characters, Grace and Neytiri's father (ordering bombardment from the cockpit of the command ship and the shrapnel taking him out is close enough to a direct kill).
>>217133746Replicants are slaves and are used by humans to do their jobs and fight their wars. They are also physically stronger than humans and much more resilient.
>>217133829>>217133804He also usurped Selfridge as the head of Hell's Gate base in the final act, all the blood after he did that is on his hands
>>217133772>>217133780I don't think Neytiri considers Quaritch as anything but responsible for her son's death. I don't even think Quaritch himself considers himself as not responsible for that. Lyle is his guy, he works under him.
>>217133820He may not be ready to abandon the RDA, but the RDA may well be ready to abandon him. Back in the day OG Quaritch bullied Selfridge and fucked up his career, and now he's defying orders over his Jake Sully obsession and still losing another major battle.I really do think there'll be some consequence for Quaritch being too loose of a cannon.
>>217133864We're talking movie logic. Logically, all the nameless Na'vi Quaritch has killed and Varang has tortured and killed should be an insurmountable pile of evil deeds. But what really affects the general audience is the killing of important or sympathetic characters. Killing one establishes a villain, and not killing any means a line has not been crossed.Neytiri can continue to want Quaritch dead, but all the audience needs her to do is not act on it if it's for the greater good. No matter what happens I don't think Quaritch and Neytiri will ever stop wanting the other dead.
>>217133897>Logically, all the nameless Na'vi Quaritch has killed and Varang has tortured and killed should be an insurmountable pile of evil deeds. But what really affects the general audience is the killing of important or sympathetic charactersThanks, this was exactly what I meant with the Lyle comment
I just noticed Lyle gets his cross necklace back in this scene after coming out of the scanner. Not only did they remember that was part of his costume for such a short (human) cameo, but they thought to have it likely be incompatible with the MRI thing.

Did Cameron say Quaritch will be the antagonist in 4 and 5 as well?
>>217133869>but the RDA may well be ready to abandon himAgain nothing in the story shows that. Even the general herself, the only one clashing heads with him in the RDA, was only doing so because of his questionable behavior. And her alongside all her high ranking lackeys are all dead now anyways. This movie Avatar 4 is set up in a way that Quaritch regains much of the control he had in the first movie with the RDAs military. Even in this movie he had the power to mobilize forces and give away weapons to natives without the generals say so. He is way more integrated within the power structure than it appears, to the point where he was surprised the general didn't notify him on the meeting they were having. He has a lot more sway over the military than you think, he isn't just some attack dog.

>>217133958What if your avatar blew yourself?
>>217133934Yes Cameron has been explicit that he will remain the villain throughout all the movies.Again, people are ignoring the fact that his version of going native is with the ash people, not any other Navi tribe. That doesn't make him any closer to being Jakes ally at all. If anything that's just another point of antagonization for him and Jake. There is no way the movies are ending with Quaritch, Varang, Jane and Neytiri holding hands and singing together. The ash people want what the RDA has not to live the way Eywa wants them.

>>217134721You just don't remember what the kuru is, that's fine. But if you see that as criticism then you are just looking to get angry for no reason. Meds.
>>217126836I'm almost at the point that I want to watch that movie but is she really the protagonist?
>>217134502>>217134678neyney was way more open about showing her tits in a1 eh
>>217134768why do the clones have the human's tats
>>217134856>Kuru is a rare, incurable, and fatal brain disease (a prion disease) once prevalent among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea, caused by eating infected human brain tissue during funeral rituals, leading to tremors, loss of coordination, and eventually death from starvation or pneumonia, and is now virtually extinct due to the cessation of cannibalismHuh
>>217133940>the RDA may well be ready to abandon him>Again nothing in the story shows thatGoes AWOL, defies orders and skips confinement to base, and multiple briefing scenes of fucky chain of command 3 ways ... but he justifies the means by getting the Ashies to reverse Gandalf cavalry the Na'vi ambish horde— IF he survives the ending fall, that in itself symbolically heel turns on the one real RDA & humanity link: 'his' son. Him & the corporation exec sing from the same sheet of music; to the extent he would be willing to remain an agent for RDA/mankind, that would need to become clandestine with kayfabe warcriminal beef for diplomacy sake at the military level (or having a new general take over for ham-fisted yenta in chief). Quaritch having children by Varang would come useful vs. the other protagonists' in future films, and further confound his identity crisis and paternal beef with Spider.
>>217134884Eywa confirmed malevolent
>>217134824Then stop complaining about not understanding what's happening.
>>217134869She was after that BHC
>>217134869she was much younger and had somewhat lesser status. As the wife of the chieftain she has more elaborate outfits.Neytiri does have a ton of different outfits though. She loves her clothes
>>217134865only a few scenes with her, not worth unless youre able to skip the parts you dislike
>>217134883To ease the transition. You can pretend it's still your body, just somehow grew bigger, getting reborn in a body that's nothing like you would probably fuck with your brain too much. But wouldn't making them believe they are avatars be better? At least short term.
>>217134768Funny how Jimbo subtly show the changes happening between 2006 and 2017 when these two movies were made.
>>217134865>protagonistNo, she's the antagonist. It's the opposite.
>>217134957>>217134957>>217134957
>>217134911And she's the wife of not just any chieftain, she's the wife of Toruk Macto himself. Love how she sticks up for Jake basically saying "My husband is a living legend, who the fuck do you think you are to speak to him this way?"
>>217134897I read the wiki, its pretty retarded imo
>>217134883To make them adjust easier to their new bodies. That's also the reason they have similar haircuts.
>>217134967love Ronal and her acting no matter what anybody else says
>>217134865The scenes Varang has although not that many, panders to Varangfags and Quaritch self inserts to the utmost degree. A lot of her scenes are also great in 3D imax, I would really advise you to go watch it. I am probably going to watch the movie in theaters again shortly before it's removed.
>>217134659>>217134678Isn't it canon that Neytiri's dead sister was meant to be the shaman to Tsu'tey's chieftain and he loved her but not Neytiri and wasn't actually too happy about being mated to Neytiri when she inherited the role
>>217135150yes that's correct.
>>217135150Was that part of the cancelled "prequel" that was suggested by Cameron?
>>217133917pixel camo is stupid
>>217134883not everything has a real meaning, it's done so you can put two and two together and it works great
