>>217151091Harve Bennett submitted an academy script in the 90s and then I think Babylon 5 creator JMS wrote something similar in the 00s. I think both scripts had elements eventually incorporated in the first JJTrek movie. My point being the idea of making an Academy movie/series goes way back, but in the beginning it was about Kirk & Spock at the Academy and not in the far future.
>>217151362they've been talking about making a show like this for almost 30 fuckin years they are finally doing it. Good. now stop fucking talking about making it and push it out like the shit it will be so we can never do it again.
It's funny how Star Trek: Communicator magazine freely published all of these fan letters about how dissatisfied they were with Enterprise and the direction of the franchise at the time. Something changed in society and now things like magazines or official websites only want to cultivate a feel-good hugbox environment over new shows. I could see the beginnings of it with the first JewJew movie.
>>217151405Was that why they made Voyager, DS9, and Enterprise? I mean, it would explain a lot.
>>217151362Halfway thru that trailer, this itejm is treated like a big reveal. Any Trekkie recognize it, or is this new Canon Lore?
>>217151470that TNG episode "the first duty" was the testing ground. They wanted to make it way back then but it didnt happen. Then like this anon said >>217151390 they wanted to make a star fleet academy thing where kirk meets spock hurr durr lets do what star wars did that everyone like yes absolutely right? Instead Abrams had the good sense at least not to do that but it was still a prequel so fuck him and fuck paramount.
>>217151202i could probably write an essay about their relationship it's so cartoonish yet realistic at the same time and so entertaining to watch. i like how it's a power struggle playing out between equals that are both basically staying respectful despite the clear hatred. I just love how they deal with each other.
>>217151299STD wasn't made for Trekkies, that's why Bryan Fuller left. Instead they made it for 2010s-era SJW quirky chunguses who like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and modern Star Wars movies. STD was a complete failure, but at least it wasn't capeshit trek like JJ made.
>>217151558Dont you compare buffy to that shit
>>217151558>STD was a complete failure, but at least it wasn't capeshit trek like JJ made.yes it was somehow worse
>>217151509The costumes are brand new creations never before seen in trek, and it's debatable whether or not any form of Kurtzman trek is canon.
>>217151584If anything it's a testament to Buffy that Paramount wanted to woo that fanbase by making Trek more like it. If only they hired a few fanservice girls like Dushku to play characters like Tilly instead of the ginger fatbody we got. Actually according to Fuller, Gillian Anderson was supposed to play a Captain originally, but unfortunately that was dropped when Fuller left.

>>2171537082 Picards
This episode had many flaws. First, having a brush with death doesn't guarantee that you will now appreciate life and become goal oriented. That's as ridiculous as your family member getting shot and you dedicate your life to become a vigilante crime fighter. Most people who survive brushes will death end up traumatized for life. They would all become lutenant Barkley.Second, you don't need a brush with death to be motivated to take the initiative in life. There are many reasons why someone would take the initiative in life. Most do it out of inspiration from others in their lives. Not surviving violent experiences.Third, there was nothing wrong with blue shirt Picards life. The fact that he made it as a blue shirt on THE FLAGSHIP is in itself a huge accomplishment. Not everyone can be captain but not everyone can end up ON THE FLAGSHIP. Most officers end up on some boring outpost, communication array, transport vessels, freighters, or starbase. I would imagine 90% of officers end up there. Better a blue shirt on the FLAGSHIP then a captain of a freighter or transport.Fourth, THE only reason Picard hated his blue shirt career is only because he was aware of his old life as captain. If Q made him unaware of his old life then Picard would have been happy. Part of the joke was that Q made sure Picard never forgot his old life.
>>217153796why'd you post it here this time instead of making a thread?
>>2171537082 hands
>>217153796the episode doesn't imply that's it's guaranteedthat's blatantly untrue, most people now are just pussies who claimed they have PTSD because someone told them to stop acting cringe
>>217153850There are 4 hands
>>217153819Because it's a star trek episode. Why would we talk about star Trek somewhere else?>>217153860>that's blatantly untrue, most people now are just pussies who claimed they have PTSD because someone told them to stop acting cringePerhaps but we are talking about a violent confrontation where somebody got brutally stabbed through the back, the heart and sternum. Then woke up with an artificial heart for life. It's no different from being in a car accident and waking up with no legs. It's a complete life changing experience. We are not talking about snowflake trauma where the wrong pronoun was used, but real violent brushes with death. I survived 2 car accidents 3 years ago and now I suffer from PTSD and severe anxiety. It changed my life for the worse.
>>217153850Why does everyone do that in Star Trek? Not like they needed to go Jackie Chan on the show but regular boxing and kicking would have sufficed.
>>217154038>Why would we talk about star Trek somewhere else?there was a time recently where some guy was making a thread about this episode like every day. using that image. maybe that wasn't you
>>217154084It wasn't me but I did participate in one of them.
Justice for Penthar Mul
>>217153796The episode wasn't just about Picard's brush with death, sure this is an important event in Picard's life but that's the point of the episode; that small changes in life create major differences. Like how he tried to bang that girl and it just made it awkward. No doubt that contributed to his "playing it safe" reserved personality in that timeline.
>>217153796all valid points. I'd also add how fucking smug riker and diana treated him as additional reasons this episode sucks ass.
>>217149930Ezri was better in every single way. Having a character be a literal evil parasite that enslaves its host was a weird character choice. Even weirder to me how everybody just goes along with it like its normal. Like there isn't a woman being enslaved by an immortal parasite right now just because they like the parasite's personality sometimes.
>>217153708
>>217154203They didn't treat him smugly, they just treated him like a stranger. It's Riker's job as XO to bust the balls of officers who are not excelling. It's the Enterprise, not a luxury yacht, and they're military officers, not the crew of the Loveboat.
>>217153796Incredibly poor take. Shortsighted and too projecting; misses the forest for the trees. You make the mistake of thinking the episode is trying to claim X action always leads to Y result. It is a nuanced exploration of different paths through life, not an arbitrary hierarchical classification of causalities. Not to be insulting but I suspect you may have autism which if so would limit your ability to perceive anything in a narrative that isn't explicitly spelled out in concrete terms, leading to the confusion you now experience.
>>217154152>that small changes in life create major differencesLol! That WAS NOT a small life changing event. He got stabbed through the back, heart and sternum. Then woke up with an artificial heart for life. That's the same as a major car accident where one wakes up with no legs anymore. That was a huge life changing experience. I think this episode stuck with people because we look back at our lives and have many regrets not knowing how blessed we are right now. Some of us believe that they could have had a better life if they chose A instead of B. But maybe A wouldn't have resulted in a better outcome. Picard was given an opportunity most mortals could ever dream of: a second chance. But that second chance resulted in a life he never wanted. Sure he would have survived past getting shot in the artificial heart but he would have grown old with a boring life. Instead he chose to die as the man he was instead of growing old with a mediocre job. Honestly, both choices were fine. I think the lesson here is to appreciate everything you have instead of living forever with regrets and decisions never made.

>>217154038>It's no different from being in a car accident and waking up with no legs. It's a complete life changing experience.Well I mean, except for the fact his quality of life was exactly the same up until he got shot. Having no legs understandably has a much more immediate effect on your life, cuz y'know, you're kind of crippled.

Vulcan salute!
>Adult Picard got in trouble as a young man>Regrets it intellectually, without appreciating those experiences helped make him the man he is today????? Not a difficult story concept to understand. I'm not even memeing or shitposting here when I say you have to literally be a basement manchild with zero life experience if you don't sympathize with this at least a little. Bad events can shape us into better people, it's not hard. He got a genie's-wish chance to undo his, and saw that fear and self-doubt and playing it safe turned him into an avoidant, cowardly person. I guess if you've only ever BEEN an avoidant coward your entire life, yeah, I can see how you might get aggravated, but that aggression is being directed towards the wrong place. This story is perfectly fit. Getting stabbed through the heart wasn't the focus of the story. /Being afraid to ever take risks/ was.You literally are not living if you aren't taking risks. You're just waiting for life to exhaust itself. Fuck, this is one of the best episodes of TNG ever written, really.

>>217154623Picard had to have his artificial heart replaced every few years. Dr Pulaski performed the surgery for him in Season 2. He was very insecure about it and very sensitive about the crew of the enterprise knowing about it. It's probably what lead to him becoming a very private person until the end of season 7.

I've been watching through TNG for the first time and two weeks ago I watched that Lwaxana Troi episode about the guy who has to go kill himself at the age of 60.I don't know why but that episode really surprised me by how much emotionally invested I was with it. I'm not even thirty yet so it's not like I'm the target age group they were trying to hit hardest but I really enjoyed the philosophical discussion. I also thought Lwaxana was really good in the episode and it gave her a lot of depth. I think from the first quarter of the episode I really didn't expect it to go the way it did and so the surprise made it a lot more engaging.kino episode overall, one of my favourites so far.

'Elaan of Troyius' brings into play stereotypes of the Asian female – the manipulative dragon lady and the submissive female slave. Elaan is both irrational and primitive. She throws temper tantrums, eats with her hands, and drinks from the bottle. Kirk tells her, 'Nobody's told you that you're an uncivilized savage, a vicious child in a woman's body, an arrogant monster.'" Bernardi argues, "Captain Kirk, the 'white knight' of Star Trek, articulates his and the Federation's moral superiority and authority over the Asian-alien and her people through sexual conquest […] Indeed, it is only after the captain physically and sexually dominates her that she respects and eventually falls in love with him […] After giving in to Kirk's power, Elaan, like the cunning and manipulative dragon lady of classical Hollywood cinema, returns the favor by capturing his heart. The Asian-alien's tears contain a bio-chemical agent that, when touched by a man (even aliens like Kirk), forces him to fall deeply in love with her. After she manipulates Kirk into desiring her, Elaan becomes submissive, gentle, loyal, even willing to die with him, by his side, as the Klingons ruthlessly attack the Enterprise. It is at this point in the narrative that the other stereotype of the Asian female comes into play – that of the submissive Asian slave. In the end, Elaan does anything Captain Kirk requests, politely and adoringly obeying his demands and orders. Her dragon lady tactics were only used so that she could assume a position she truly desired: the submissive mistress of a white knight.

DA RODDENBERRY SAID SOMilitary, paramilitary -- if you're doing court martials and abiding by military principles and protocols, you're a military. Doesn't matter if you call yourself paramilitary, or an exploration force, or Gene's Clean Team. You are what you are, not what you call yourself, and Starfleet is absolutely a militarized defense force that doubles as an exploratory fleet. This isn't a new thing for navies throughout history.
