Tremblay is known for his ambiguous endings which I thought was well done in Head Full of Ghosts. Cabin at the End of the World had a pretty shit ending but Shyamalan changed it of course.

Ended up being a better ending imo, but a boring movie overall. Should've stayed a book.

Just finished Savageland, really torn on it. The photographs are done extremely well and the entire way what happened at the town is described is unsettling as fuck, but every actor besides Salazar comes across like a goofy retard. I get whatever hurr durr social commentary they were trying to do with people on both political sides trying to blame each other or manipulate the story for their own benefit but it was so absurd at times given the mountain of evidence showing what really happened and none of them really commented or addressed the implications of the photos with any realistic seriousness, like the idea of a horde of nightmarish abominations descending on a town and methodically slaughtering the entire population is just ho hum to them.

Shit like the black journalist constantly screeching about race or the fat redneck sheriff picking his nose while saying Salazar (somehow) photoshopped everything and what really happened was he ran around the town like some kind of Mexican hybrid between Rambo and Speedy Gonzalez going apeshit with a machete and pickaxe were just too goofy to believe.

I loved how it wasn't just "standard" zombies but there are implications something supernatural is happening, they are running, a lot of them look too deformed/mutated, the camera blurs only around them but doesn't blur on shots of people, they completely ignored Salazar's goats and other animals while deliberately targeting people, some of them surrounded and patrolled the only landline phone in town, all of that adds up to make them unique and far more threatening than the normal walking dead.

The documentary aspect of it was just really, really weak and lame compared to the coverage of the event itself. Also I couldn't help but notice that they used stock footstep sound effects when the documentary host is walking around town and it made me feel like I was watching a GMod video.

Just watched Exit 8 and seriously how do people not rape
>>
>>217827104
Forgot this was out. Gonna put it on now.
>>
Just finished. Ok, so there's two reasons to hate this "trilogy." One is it gets the premise of the original completely wrong, and second is that it's just one long movie, meaning the first two chapters aren't functional without the third. (Who the hell thought a five hour long Strangers movie is something that should exist?) 1 for a lot of flack for being just a retread of the original, and what it SHOULD have been was just 20 minutes long, a recap of the concept like the opening act of Friday the 13th '09 was, and 2 and 3 each about 30 minutes long as the 2nd and 3rd acts of 90 minute movie. For some reason it seems like the intention was to take The Strangers and explain it (the opposite of what made it good), giving the killers identities and backstories. Now that it's over it's just another middling slasher movie. Something that struck me is how boring the kills are in all three, just stabbings and shootings over and over.
Spoilers Maya (Madeline) killed Pinup Girl at the end of chapter 2. The other two take her body off in the truck. Maya walks to a church and the drunk roommate from 2 walks in, and immediately reveals that he's Scarecrow (this is like 15 minutes in.). They share a toast of bourbon to those who have died so far (!!!) A flashback shows kid scarecrow on trial for the murder of Tamara and it's revealed the sheriff is his dad (lol). The judge lets the kid off with a warning that if he kills anybody else he's going to jail "and I'm serious, young man" (LOL what the fuck!) A week fucking later he kills some random townsperson and the sheriff tells him he's only allowed to kill outsiders from now on. Scarecrow catches Maya again easily, ties her up and gives her a smiley face tattoo, makes her watch as they destroy pinup girl's body in a woodchipper. They put Pinup's mask on her and take her to random couple's hotel room and force her to kill the girl. She kills dollface too.
>>

>>

oops, lol
big spoilers there and it won't let me delete it
>>
Ok, got it
Meanwhile Maya's sister has come to town looking for her and the sheriff leads her to scarecrow's trailer home, where scarecrow kills her in front of Maya. He then lets Maya go, and she follows him back to his hideout, where she kills the sheriff. She finds a shrine to Pinup Girl, Scarecrow comes in, tells her they're the same now, they almost make out (?) and she stabs him to death. She walks off with his mask, the end.
I was in the theater alone except for a nog couple who talked through the movie start to finish, explaining to each other everything that was happening, getting most of it wrong (they thought the random girl they killed at the hotel was her sister, for example.) when scarecrow takes his mask off at the end, the female said "I knew it!!" proudly, having not noticed I guess that there was a scene 15 minutes into the movie where he straight up told us it was him, lol.
>>

Endings are the achilles heel of horror.

It's easy to set up an intriguing mystery and some good scares. But then when you have to explain the mystery, show the monster running around the open, and/or have some kind of final battle, 80% of spoopy kino just kinda fall flat.

Lovecraft and older horror films had a different method to the whole thing. They just telegraph the ending so hard that there is no mystery, but the character can't or won't see it. Same thing with Junji Ito.

This is generally the setup with most ghost stories and horror short stories as well and it's been tradition going all the way back to edgar allan poe

only within the very narrow contexts of anglo saxon three act structure is this a problem - but I agree it IS a problem because that's what most horror tries to stick to.

one of the best ever horror movies to skirt around this is blair witch project. it doesn't elaborate on anything or offer any explanation.
>>
>>217839619
So many horror films now just have some kind of skinwalker creature with cracking bones and unnatural movements. It's tedious at this point. One of the things I so appreciated about the Smile movies is that they at least tried to come up with an original creature.
>>
>>217842359
All zombies/monsters/demons etc having the same generic monster scream really gets to me.
>>
>>217842411
It seems like there's only so much you can really do with creature features, especially when so much has been done already. Whether it's effective or not comes down to setup and payoff. I ended up liking The Boogeyman from 2023 with Sophie Thatcher simply because it was well executed despite it being so generic. Plus I always appreciate a good John Carpenter style ending.
>>
>>217842524
While I'm thinking about it, 2016's Lights Out was a great example of how not do a movie like that. Even though it had an interesting monster concept, exposition dumps and shoddy pacing just didn't have it doing anything for me. Then Malignant is another example of how to do it right. Even though the villain was a generic skinwalker guy, they at least made it fun by turning it into an action movie in the end.
>>
>>217842600
Yeah I guess execution is ultimately what it's about.
I'd almost say that Alien and BWP are the ultimate horrors, which is funny because one shows everything, and the other shows nothing.
I feel like if I got $20m to make any script idea I had, I'd probably fuck it up as well since it's just a dice roll with all the elements.

Just finished. Why the hell is this is limited release? This is the best teen horror I've seen since the last Final Destination. No reason Dracula should be the major wide release this week instead of this. Dafne is PURE, pulsating overwhelming sex and I couldn't look away from her. The camerawork is creative and the director clearly wanted to be making this because it's one of those kinds of movies where their teacher is named Mr. Craven and smokes Cronenberg cigarettes. Gory death scenes. There's some janky CG and awful ADR but they didn't detect from my enjoyment. /pol/ triggers: the blonde cheerleader has a black boyfriend and he's a major character (though I think she's hapa); the two leads are lesbians and it's the major romantic relationship of the movie; the villain is a youth pastor. This isn't a new masterpiece or anything but it's MUCH better than I was expecting.

just finished return to silent hill and i'm struck with a sense of disbelief over the level of ineptitude that was on display
bad green screens, semi half decent make up and special effects, the cgi was serviceable, and the acting was just terrible
the set design, however, probably was the best thing about this. it wasn't as good as it could've been. had a very "clean" dirtiness to it that took me out of it, except for when he's pulled into the bed, that set looked great shame they barely spent like 5 minutes in there
story was ok, was very close to the video game only poorly executed, the demons or manifestations or whatever show up, tell him he needs to "let go" then disappears leaving the mc like he was supposed to get something out of it
pyramid head was very under-utilized considering how central of a motif he is in the game also felt like they were hitting me over the head with him as a metaphor for the main character and his trauma
but worst of all though was the cinematography. which was confusing, i had to look up who the cinematographer was and apparently it's the same guy who worked on the rec (french) films, those films weren't terrific by any means but the cinematography were decent, especially when compared to this which was just incredibly flat and uninteresting, would've been better if they had like a different lens or added some kind of filter for the dream sequences or whatever those were but the entire thing is just the same exact flat and uninteresting visual style with the occasional pan or dutch angle roll here and there

the guy who made fucking brotherhood of the wolf made this

Cabin In The Woods was the beginning of the end. Blood was in the water, it was all about meta and subversion from then on out. The Babanuke followed 2 years later and it was lights out.
Now we seem to be in the phase of A24 horror. Where horror often just means comedy. Everyone is flailing to try and pin the tail on the donkey. Old movie posters always used to advertise with phrases "A NEW DIMENSION IN TERROR". But now it seems like people aren't expecting new dimensions of horror, they're expecting some kind of political zeitgeist that will cause it's viewers to rush out of the theater eyes wide and tear the newly seen enemy to pieces. Not unlike the end of Weapons.

A few months back I went to a screening of the new restoration of Peter Jackson's Braindead/Dead Alive, and the audience was really into it, laughing and cringing at every scene, every special effect, everything bloody or gross or funny. It was a really great time.
This was at a little indie theater that caters more to a film-loving crowd though. Check and see if there's any small theaters near you that play cool shit
>>
