Academy is so shit even the shills are having a hard time driving any kind of engagement.
>>217841086star trek is reaching dr who and star wars levels of fan alienation

>>217841304physical media and piracy are the best ways to secure quality nowadaysstreaming is shit despite the convenience, the services keep getting worse, the catalogues keep getting larger but shittier, and they keep finding ways to sneak in commercials which has brought it back to basically being cable

I hope the next release of Next Gen on blu ray will have the option to switch between old and new effects like the TOS blu rays. I dont mind it most of the time but some shots look horrible with little care or shadow work.
>>217841605Everything he did was shit. I didn't see People like Us tho, but given his record it has to be shit as well. Can't really be mad about him tho. He tried to add something new to classic franchises and simply chose the wrong details to flesh out. It happens to the best of us.

The star trek future seems pretty depressing to me. i dont see a lot difference between the borg and humans. its a next generation problem i guess because at least kirk and the crew had some fun. the next gen crew even play poker like robots so data doesnt seem that out of place.
@217841735>The star trek future seems pretty depressing to me>only talks about TOS and TNGCome on, anon, at least try with your bait.

The year is 2370, I am an ensign aboard the Starship USS Lollipop, serving under Captain William Riker. When I'm not scheduling and moving freight, I spend as much free time as possible on planet Risa. For the scenic beauty of course.
>>217841835With a holodeck, you can go anywhere you want
>>217841835Wow! Really? So the future is like some boarding school where you could die at any moment because a blast destroys your deck? What fun! (just imagine holden caulfield on the enterprise_
It just occured to me, what if Star Trek is just done? Every aspect of the human condition has been dealt with already. Racism and transgenderism have been resolved by Picard in 92. Everything NuTrek is doing now is just more of the same but with less lights on stage and more clumsily shot. Some of their crazy new ideas are even lore shattering. They should just stop imho
>>217841916Wonder if Risa even has holodecks.
>>217841380I keep seeing videos and articles about the comeback of physical media and piracy. But then every year stores shrink their DVD section to only things old people would be interested in. And naturally every year DVD sales shrink. The format probably won't exist in 10 years thanks to streaming.
>>217841931They must have had personal holodecks until they realised people were gooning to death and becoming addicted. Even geordi had to come up with an excuse to see his waifu for scientific reasons
>>217841948Exploring panels will likely only blind you.
>>217841956not really. they should be hiring seasoned science fiction writers to come up with original concepts like TOS did and incorporating them into an episodic show. instead they are hiring hacks to appeal to an audience who doesnt care about trek
>>217841985I haven't seen a DVD case irl in years. Piracy is alive and well tho.
>>217841383The trek series we should have got
>>217841956Nah that’s like asking what it LotR just doesn’t resonate with modern society. Obviously it does. You could always do a new Trek series with good writing that tells the same basic themes in new and interesting ways
>>217841383Did shatner really write these or were they ghostwritten?
>>217841956>Captain Picard looks wistfully out at a depleted and drained planet, still centuries from Warp technology.>"Lt. Data, turnabout and set a course for the nearest Federation Station, Warp 2">"Just because their planet is a blown out 3rd world shithole doesn't mean we need to take them in"
>>217841605How many studio heads does he have on tape fucking kids to have a record like that and still be working
What's the LCARS predecessor OS called and why is it so comfy?
>>217842048I bought a ton of Star Trek physical media when I worked at Walmart and got an employee discount + free shipping. But their electronics section was literally collections of boomer media like John Wayne movies and "The very best of: [Celebrity who has been dead for over 30 years]". There was also a DVD copy of Lower Decks in the clearance bin that gave me a chuckle. And last I heard only millennials were tech savy enough to pirate.
>>217842123>Just because their planet is a blown out 3rd world shithole doesn't mean we need to take them inThis was a DS9 episode and even Kira agreed that Bajor isn't a dumping ground for Gamma Quadrant refugees.
>>217841105I've never understood the hate the NX got for being a saucer with 2 nacelles and not being Starfleet white.
>>217842156>tech savy enough to pirate.

>>217842244I get the feeling the feds have hundreds of uninhabited worlds given how many god damn terra forming colonists they have spread all over.
>>217842210Gen X nerds were, for some reason, furious it looked like the Akira class from the top viewIt's kind of funny that both Star Wars and Star Trek nerds in the 2000s complained loud enough to drive their creatives completely out of the industry, and deliver both their beloved franchises to JJ Abrams
>>217841956I think the concept of an aspirational show, where things are good and get better, will always have a place. Its just that everyone has become a doomer. I would love a show that shows how the federation was built.
>>217842312Nihilism has infested almost every -ism, political belief, genre, and way of life in the big 26
>>217842312You mean ENT?
>>217842312Sure, you just need someone with... talent.
>>217842312There isn't a single aspirational character or idea in SA. It's just an ultra-lefty college on a spaceship. Like every other teen drama on streaming. Nobody is going to watch this show and want to be a scientist or an explorer. The characters are all repellant.
>>217842336>>217842336Probably the result of the levers of culture being pretty much exclusively controlled by insane nihilists who somehow hold both that morality is a fictional concept and completely relative, but also that anyone who disagrees with their politics is purest evil and must be destroyed

>>217842399I like Genesis. She has her shit together and doesn't make waves. She's the daughter of an admiral so she's upwardly mobile but doesn't make a stink about it. That's management material.

>>217840517The Captain's log is in his pants.
>>217842599He'll make them the ultimate origin of the Borg
>>217842336Absolutely. It is incredible how things getting worse is just a self-fulfilling prophecy now. I think the problem came about when people thought they could fix the world.
>>217842530High school has a horseshoe effect where people with the lowest status and people with the highest status are both trapped there mentally. You see it in the corporate world too. Women who were Stacies in high school would rather gossip and stir shit than get any work done. And people who were bullied every day spend their nights wondering how their lives would have turned out if they were popular. There are a number of TNG episodes about this.
>>217842601Not on the internet in the 2000s they didn't
>>217842376I think it is more than just talent. You would need writers who are not infected with this modern malaise.

>>217842759all the dilithium everywhere asploded because some fish boy's mom died and he got sad no more warp ships bye bye
>>217842678That's because high school is where you learn how human social structures work. They get slightly more complicated in adulthood, but not much more. "Popularity" doesn't just happen magically, it's just the group opinion of how good or bad you are to spend time withThe problem with this show, I think, is that it's written by adults who were ugly, sullen, snarky, unpopular assholes as kids and who seethed with resentment at the good-looking popular kidsSo they've written a show where the popular kids are ugly, sullen, snarky assholes. But nobody wants to spend time with ugly, sullen, snarky assholes in real life or on the screen in their homes.
Just listened to a guy give Academy ep5 a 10/10 because seeing Jake made him cry... Can't believe how effective that reference shit is...
In some mirror universe where the dominion wins the war, what would they have done with the cardies? I can't shake the feeling they'd just up and dispose of them once they outlived their usefulness, but I could also see them getting modified like the vorta and jem'hadar
>>217841447Not only that, it self-destructed upon seeing who was trying to consult it. And apparently anyone can just walk up to use it freely too...
>>217842759really makes you wonder why Earth didn't blow during the burn. Surely we were running matter/anti-matter reactors that required dilithium here on Earth as well and only Q'onos blew up?

>>217843132
>>217843017I also enjoyed the various other ways it's revealed that Liz is an incredibly awful person lolGenerally though the popular kids were popular because they're fun to be around and do interesting things, and the unpopular kids are unpopular because they're awful to be around and do boring things. When there was a "popular" kid who genuinely sucked, it was usually because they had the party house or something like that which could offset their shitty personalityHow the fuck do these writers not know this? It's like the plague of recent film/TV "heroes," especially female ones, who are just the most horrible unpleasant people, who everyone with a choice would avoid in real life, but they're the main character so all the other characters love them and the audience is racist if they have the natural human reaction to being asked to spend hours of their life with a shitty person
>>217843152>hey bae wanna make an Archon together?

>>217843181I wonder if that is one of the failures of modern writing, is that the basic facts of people have been forgotten or inverted. Not only are all characters cliches of archetypes, but they are also inversions of reality. And also the fad of treating characters personalities as being something that has to be resolved.
>>217842410Grim. The future used to be hopeful
What’s the first episode you remember watching? Pic related
>>217843455I caught this episode in syndication in middle school and had a very negative response. It made me say “What the hell was THAT??” And put off Star Trek for years. Th Host is a good episode but a terrible starter.
>>217843341>I wonder if that is one of the failures of modern writing, is that the basic facts of people have been forgotten or inverted. Not only are all characters cliches of archetypes, but they are also inversions of reality. And also the fad of treating characters personalities as being something that has to be resolved.I think it's a direct result of so much writing being done by horrible losers who don't know anything about people or life, but fiction is about people and lifeGenuinely shitty narcissists for the most part who, being shitty, were not popular, and also being narcissists refuse to realize that they were the reason they weren't popular. So they write shitty narcissist self-insert characters who, unsurprisingly, the audience doesn't likeAnd most of the writers working on "legacy" franchises are 20 year olds who have no insight into life because they haven't lived yet, so their version of super deep is just the retarded nonsense they heard from the washed up old Marxist who teaches them English
>>217842847Better safety standards maybe? I don't know, maybe the reactor cores just get beamed somewhere into orbit as soon as there's the slightest fuckery going on? Then again I'm not sure if beaming them away is a smart idea after all since I don't really remember the show doing it, they always just eject them, as if beaming could cause the reaction to occur faster or something. But again I'm sure I'm putting more thought into this shit than the STD retards ever did.
>>217843589And GOD FORBID we let anything be black-and-white anymore. No, our enemies must be gray. Our protagonists must subvert the classic idea of good. Our heroes must not face challenges and grow like Worf struggling with his Klingon identity—instead we need to shove it down the throat of the audience in S1 that Jay-Den is different but he MUST be accepted just the way he is!
>>217843037
>>217843667>And GOD FORBID we let anything be black-and-white anymore. No, our enemies must be gray. Our protagonists must subvert the classic idea of good.Um excuse me chud but while this is all true, you must also recognize that any character who disagrees with the political positions of a generic 21st century Hollywood liberal is pure evil and must be destroyed by any means necessary, and preferably killed gruesomely
How could they not like it bros???? IGN gave it a 10/10 and Mother Jones said it was the best episode of Trek ever produced. Did they just not understand who Sisko was?
>>217843728Enemies can be morally grey and do good deeds insofar in that they accomplish their selfish desires. And heroes are allowed to be selfish and greedy insofar in that they simply oppose the hecking fascists of the series.Peak writing in 2026z
Is it true that Avery Brooks didn't record for the episode at all and that they just licensed a copy of one of his poetry recordings at the end?
>>217843782Exactly, "villains" are probably actually misunderstood heroes and heroes can torture people to death if it's for some desirable end, so what's the difference really, good and evil are just meaningless wordsUnless a character does a heckin racism or transphobia, or says chud words like "make X great again" or "stand your ground" in which case they need to burn to death slowly while our heroes cheer and dance

ITS OUT! Cirroc Lofton bows down to Tawny Newsome's superiority for paying tribute to Sisko! Lot of crying ensues so don't you dare ridicule that fine piece of writing! Insane how she repeatedly praises DS9 and Academy in the same sentence because of how both have camp/comedic and serious episodes. >>217844804>but all the popular kids were popular because they were slightly wealthier than everyone else and they were huge assholes, and everyone else sucked up to them to avoid getting picked on. they were some of the most annoying and uninteresting morons at the schoolThis is pretty standard unpopular kid cope. In reality, it was the unpopular kids who were annoying and uninteresting, and usually assholes, which is why everyone avoided them. Rich kids could be "popular" because they had a good pool or their parents were out of town a lot, but that was just having something to offer >golf plans/underage drinking plans/boating plans for the weekendThese are interesting things to do. If you, as a normie, were given a choice of going boating on the weekend or playing a tabletop RPG in a basement on the weekend, which would you choose? Which would you rather watch?
>>217844663>not what happened but be reductionistI was there anon, I saw forums full of people bitching about the Akiraprise. In retrospect it's amazing how spoiled Gen X nerds were and how much listening to them ruined everything
>>217845462depends on the time period. you seem to be stuck in the 80's hallmark movie mindset instead of reality. i'd probably choose the tabletob rpg in the basement because the people there are at least genuine in their enjoyment of the thing, instead of being stuck on a boat with a bunch of drunk assholes
>>217845462None of those things are interesting. Boring people drink as a way to cope with the fact that they have no personality.
>>217845497>>217845515>I'd rather play Warhammer in a basement than go boating>people who want to go boating are boring and have no personality, unlike meAnd there you goWe all have preferences, but a key thing about responsibility is recognizing if your preferences are unlikely to be shared by 99% of other people. And popularity is literally just how good you are for other people spend time with
>>217845621Have you ever gone boating, especially with annoying assholes? You just sit on the boat and drink while they play crappy soundcloud music, which they then talk over about nothing when they're not trying to fuck with you. I'm serious anon, these people have no discernible personality besides acting like twats, because their parents were too busy to raise them.

>>217845462this sounds like cope coming from someone who peaked in high school
>>217845798>this sounds like cope coming from someone who peaked in high schoolNigga I'm here talking about Star Trek. I just figured out "popularity" isn't a mysterious thing that just happens to you, or doesn't, but really a group score of how good you are to be around. And it of course persists throughout adult life - when it's time for promotions, someone who's somewhat competent at their job and a good hang will get promoted every single time over someone who's much better at the same job but miserable to be around, because the person deciding on promotions is mostly selecting someone they're going to have to be around for 40 hours a week.>>217845746>Have you ever gone boating, especially with annoying assholes?Anon if everyone else was having a good time and you were seething because you didn't like their music and small talk, you were the annoying asshole

>>217845909That's the thing, nobody was "having a good time". Everyone was just drinking and vaping and poking around on their phones. >>217846202Way to miss my point you fucking retard. I'm not explaining it further because you are a waste of brain cells.
the original dress uniforms looked normal so why'd they make them gay in TNG? did the galaxy get gayer in the intervening years?
I think it would have been more interesting if section 31 was comprised of mostly nonhumans who just were hardcore federation believers and the few humans in it had to routinely tell them to chill out
>>217846218>Way to miss my pointYou don't have one. >everything they like sucks and they suck! they're boring assholes! they should like what I like!>why doesn't anybody want to spend time with me? it's so unfair, I should be popular!Like I said, "popularity" isn't this thing that magically happens to some people and not others. It's just the consensus on whether or not you're good to spend time with. Your rebuttal is the time someone invited you to spend time with them, and you spent the time seething about how much you hate them and how their music and conversation sucked One of the many reasons Starfleet Academy sucks so bad is that it's people like you trying to write people like you as the cool kids, but the cool kids are cool, and do interesting stuff. It'd be like writing the star quarterback as a paraplegic in a wheelchair - popularity isn't some random event, but the result of stuff you doThe good news is this is not genetic and you can change it any time you like

Deep Space Nine's a Bajoran outpost, not some bleedin' refugee camp for every spoon-headed lizard who lost their empire in the Dominion War. >>217843764I remember 4 years ago this guy and his butt buddies were watching Picard season 2. The reviews are longer than the episodes and they're not even funny like RLM. How do they keep doing it.

Would Picard have done a good job if he had been the captain of Babylon 5 and dealt with the things Sinclair and Sheridan had to deal with?

Rewatching the original Twilight Zone and Outer Limits I never realized just how much Berman era Trek ripped off some of these episodes.
>>217843455I didn't even know what it was at the time, but the episode when Picard has the heart surgery. Actually, that one specific scene, with the weird visuals and white background
>>217847573Narbag Timtam
>>217847623Twilight Zone is the best television show of all time in my opinion and I say that as an autistic /trek/ loser
>>217847571That anon is right though. Why wouldn't the bathroom just be connected to your bedroom instead?
>>217847687Starfleet officers aren't fatasses and can handle walking a few feet to go to the bathroom. Also maybe the production designer was just retarded.

Regeneration is a pretty good episode of ENT, just rewatched it.
>>217846537I miss that one anons obsession with Turkish star trek
>>217847844I forget how that reconciled this one with the canon
>>217846701For me it's the Hierarchy
>>217847844>>217847855I like it. It actually works because they spun it right out of First Contact, much like ENT itself.
>>217847855star fleet forgot
>>217847855The bodies recovered are from the events of First Contact. They stop the Borg ship but realize it sent a signal to the Delta Quadrant, realizing that they've only delayed the Borg from finding earth for about 200 years. In the context of the episode they know very little about what exactly they encountered.

Always forget the baby Jem'Hadar episode is also the same one where 16 yo Jake has the 20 yo gf through his writing. And this is not the one where he gets groomed by the nonce energy sucking alien.
>>217848959Kid Jake episodes are kino, adult Jake episodes are cringe filler bullshit. Nog had better character development.
>>217848959This episode also reminding me why there really can't be hybrid Jem'Hadar ever. The breeding cannot be defeated, and that's the point.

>>217846739>>217846877The Return is worth reading because it's an absolute fucking fever dream of a novel. It's genuinely batshit insane, and this is coming from a big fan of TOS and Shatner in general. If you can only read one, go for that one.
Just got to the TOS episode "The Corbomite Maneuver", the ending was insane but the rest of it was really compelling. I figured the dummy head they had was just a bad prop (by modern standards) but the ending made it pretty great. Sulu also a bit of a quiet standout, being one of the few truly calm people just reading the clock down and awaiting instructions. So far this episode felt the most like what I'd heard about Star Trek characters being, professionals in the face of insane circumstances, facing a threat they realistically have no chance of defeating through bluffs and diplomacy.
>>217842312Great idea, we can even implement how they're discovered by The Founders and slowly subverted by judai - er I mean - *BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM*Sorry, dropped a bowling ball down the stairs. As I was saying, it would be a glorious day to see how all races and nations contributed equally to the Federation to unite against the Klingon Menace, and allied with the Ferengi.

Imagine wearing a hair clip over your eyes blocking all vision and attempting to act upon the stage for 7 years and hundreds of episodes because the writers could not give you implants or some cool tech hologram that pops out and instead write an episode that makes you say thank you to the writers by having your character decide to keep it. By Grabthar's hammer, by the suns of Worvan, you shall be avenged...what a savings....
>>217853747pulaski offered to fix it in season 2. geordi is just a fag
>>217853747Yeah actors used to actually become the role they play instead of just showing up to get a check. Imagine if they brought back a legacy character and the actor said he would only return if he didn't have to wear the uniform or deliver convincing lines.
>>217854229this image is unsettling, something about it is unnaturalhis head looks like that bad deepfake from the wolverine origin movie
Is season 1 of Next Gen really that bad or have television standards slipped so badly that it actually looks competent. I re watched it and whilst i found some episodes boring or uninteresting i didnt find them bad. Its a middling start to a new series. I can understand if you watched TOS which had great stuff off the bat in the first season but its still a nice continuation (probably a little too stuffy and antiseptic).
