Just watched the episode. I presume the consensus is the flashback was 1) just eating runtime for what could have been a more focused fight between different combatants, and also 2) sort of interpreted the flow of things. The main thing that saved the flashback was the Arlan part where he rescued Dunk, but the gist of that could have just been done in a better handled flashback to begin with; even if they were to keep the girl it seems like it could be streamlined, same with Dunk following Arlan around could have been streamlined. If it was a 45 minute episode maybe it would not seem as bad, but a good chunk of the episode was the flashback when what people are going to want to see is the actual trial.

So he tried to rush to his aid but someone behind him (Baelor) tried to stop him so he just swung the mace behind himself to deter the person stopping him. And if Baelor actually wore his own helmet with the proper padding he'd probably have a concussion at worst, but the ill-fitting helmet without any padding made it a much more serious hit than it should have been. Also Maekar is a strong dude and was pretty angry at the moment so he likely didn't even think about checking his blows.

It's tragic because the two of them genuinely cared for each other but Rafe was going down a path that could only ever end in death. It's Dunk's turning point, what informs the entire rest of his character all the way to punching Aerion in the name of a girl that reminds him of his first love.They could've both survived that alleyway encounter had Rafe not taken the dagger from the goldcloak. She won quite literally nothing out of doing it other than a false sense of superiority and 'fighting back' that got her throat slashed. Dunk tries to fight back for justice and gets a spear to the leg. You then get a drunk ass hobo Arlan saving his life and killing two City Watch members just because it was the right thing to do. Previous episodes showed Arlan to not be a particularly amazing or well remembered knight who seemed more preoccupied with drinking and whoring than anything else.
