Voyager does have one of my favorite single appearance alien races: the Mikhal Travelers
>The Mikhal Travelers were a loosely-governed humanoid race of Delta Quadrant explorers. They were peripatetic by nature, living for the excitement of facing the challenge of space alone.
>They were described as risk-taking thrill seekers with no responsibility to the ideals of exploration, instead afflicted with a terminal wanderlust. Sometimes they just picked a direction and went. Kes admired them for having been to many places and doing amazing things. One traveler claimed to have journeyed to the corners of known space and beyond.
>One traveler saying was "My course is as elusive as a shadow across the sky". The expression "Pray to the stars" was also used.
>Their scout ships were small and carried only a pilot and navigator, though they were capable of high warp speeds. The Mikhal Travelers maintained outposts to refuel, repair ships, and exchange information, although they viewed such sedentary facilities as a necessary evil and preferred to leave as quickly as possible.
so basically they are literally me
episode is “Darkling” (the one where the Doctor has his Mr Hyde experience)

You can't reason with pakleds. The root cause of all these new problems is that people have pets, which they've had since the dawn of mankind. I saw both an image and a green block of text that said so, twice, so I know it's true.

The Gorn should have been brought back as a power at some point. They're in secondary media all the time but until recently nobody would touch them again. And the SNW Gorn aren't real.
>>
I said this in a previous thread but since this is Voyager themed it's relevant.
The producers waited too long to have Kes mature. It was only a few episodes before her departure when she grows her hair out and starts wearing form-fitting clothing. Prior to that, for most of season 3, she still had that pixie cut and those little girl smocks. I think this really hindered her character development. Well, not that it mattered anyway because Jennifer Lien was already falling off the wagon, which meant they had to get rid of her.
But it makes you wonder what could have been.
>>
>>218029192
you are a part of the soilennials
>>
>>218029219
>And the SNW Gorn aren't real.
I don't like the weird xenomorph angle. Fun fact, the scene where the Gorn spit impregnates Hemmer and the scene where the GornBorg spit impregnates the Union admiral in the corresponding week's episode of the Orville happened at the EXACT same minute and second (it's been a minute but I'm thinking 14:22?) odd coincidence
The Enemy Mine rehash with that one Gorn and Ortegas wasn't terrible. Hate me for that if you want. Yes it was derivative, but it was okay filler. It was no Omelas episode but I liked it. That's my general view of SNW. overall a B- but better than STD by a country mile

Nobody actually does that. It's something you believe because of a meeting between your low IQ and the internet, so trad fag streamers and memes have convinced you that somebody using a cutsey nickname for a pet is some big meaningful thing. Grandma used to get taken in by emails like "fw: fw: fw: fw: fw: fw: fw: fw: fw: fw: YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS PANCAKE", and you essentially do the same thing. The only difference is that grandma has the decency to not shit up the Star Trek thread.

Because Neelix was there, but that was her only real purpose there. "She grows up fast" isn't a real narrative hook.
>>
>>218029338
>She's the Wesley of Voyager.
No. Kes is the benign instantiation of "live fast, die young." She's Rebel With A Cause But It's Bittersweet Even When She Lives A Good Life. Unfortunately her actress loved meth and exposing herself to teens.
>>
>>218029350
That was never her purpose and what you propose doesn't even make sense for her characterization given that she came from a society that never left the interior of their planet. Kes generally did Counselor Troi-like stuff.
>>
>>218029321
My sister literally just did that though

>>

>That was never her purpose
That was the purpose of both characters.
>Kes generally did Counselor Troi-like stuff.
Also taken over by Neelix. They tried to have two and they didn't really need them. TNG did the same thing with Troi and Guinan fully overlapping and the result was one of them always getting the shaft. They were smart to just cut one loose this time, especially given that she ended up a crack addict.
>>
>>218029425
>Also taken over by Neelix.
Kes was a good active listener. Neelix talked from his wealth of experience. Kes was Troi. Neelix was Guinan.

>Also taken over by Neelix.
Not really. But Kes was mostly paired with the Doctor and helping him develop. In other times she was using her psychic powers a la Troi.
>>
>>218029235
Kes’s potential was in being the personification of
>mono no aware
and they rarely even mentioned that aspect
>>
>>218029465
neelix is a piss poor substitute for guinan if that's really what they were going for
>>
>>218029272
Is that the episode where the andorian dies? If so I generally liked it as it's own thing, I just hate when they take an established thing and make it something totally different. Here's this female Jem'Hadar for example. It's just lazy and dumb, if writers want to do their own thign then go do your own thing.
>>
>>218029486
Kes was there to gas up the doctor in to believing he was a sentient life form because of her shear ignorance.
>>
>>218029484
There's an episode where a xenomorphic species spits some sort of bullshit that turns the victim into its species which is a biological collective. It hits an admiral and this happens at the exact time as when the SNW Gorn hits Hemmer.

While I don't disagree with you, I do actually like the Jemima'Hadar because she's funny. I get it–she is a comic relief character and paired against Nig Totoro. I *should* dislike her and I probably would were she played straight (so to speak) but she's meant to be funny and in that respect I get a sensible chuckle from her every time. I get that she moved the plot on the Jay-Den episode but otherwise she's there for jokes and jokes alone.

Actual things Kes did during her time on Voyager
>Kes volunteered to establish a hydroponics garden in cargo bay two. Her requirement of nitrogenated soil for her garden from sickbay started her friendship and sympathy with The Doctor.

>Shortly after joining the crew, Kes began to exhibit some of the mental powers her species had long since lost. She experienced a telepathic vision of the devastation of a nearby planet by a polaric ion explosion. She also started to exhibit temporal telepathy while investigating the disaster, eventually locating the exact spot where Captain Janeway died.

>She also began to study medicine under The Doctor in order to become The Doctor's nurse.

>Soon Kes started to help The Doctor in sickbay. She was shocked at the way The Doctor was treated by the crew. After explaining the situation to Captain Janeway, the captain agreed with her. Janeway told The Doctor that he was a member of the crew and she gave him control of the deactivation of his program.

>Despite her respect for his lessons, Kes also lectured The Doctor on his bedside manner;

>She revealed that she was going through the Elogium, a time of change, during which her body prepared for fertilization. Janeway tried to explain to her that Humans go through a similar process called puberty

>These Ocampa had advanced telepathic abilities and their leader, Tanis, tutored her while secretly plotting with Suspiria to take Voyager. When she demonstrated her new skills to Tuvok, she accidentally boiled the water in his body and he was severely injured.

>To Tom's consternation, his feelings for her grew when he became her flight instructor, prompting a brief conflict between him and Neelix

i.e. her scenes centered around her psychic powers, alien heritage, helping to develop the doctor, love interest conflict etc. Never ever was she the person who gave info dumps about alien cultures like Neelix. Fuck you for making me dispell your stupid lying shit.

But for me personally there's value and the calculus for me is that the good parts (e.g., the Nig Totoro/Gina Yashere Statler/Waldorf energy) outweighs the bad (the overly colloquial language or getting Betazoids wrong). That's a personal decision and I don't force those on others, but if you're curious, I'll say it's not all suffering. For what it's worth, I have seen the show, I'm not an extremist about it, I liked the redo of the Romulan cloak episode from TOS. Retcons happen. I can work with that. But I've also seen that happen with TOS and TNG.
ACK does a lot of retconning but the gist remains the same. The episode with zesty Klingon is a good examples. I guess Klangs are polyamorous nomads now. Don't care. But the episode was about finding Klingon answers to Klingon problems, which was very Treky. If there's anything GenX about Trek, it's the Fight Club concept of paring away everything everything except that which truly matters.

>recons happen
That's true. Part of it is motivation, part of it is scale. An episode changing something I consider to be minor for reasons that seem driven by story is different from a change I see as major and when I see the motivation as an out-of-universe effort to persuade or preach at me. O'Brien's rank changes all the time, and that's not great but an honest mistake. Changing the Gorn feels like somebody who wanted to do their own thing (which was a tired trope anyways) by latching onto existing stories like a leech. Different to me.

I won't hate on you for your opinion, it's heckin' valid. For me it's not a big deal but I can see how it bothers others. NGL, I was fully expecting it to be the neural parasites since the whole 'Don't trust anyone' gave me Keel's message to Picard vibes, at least before the rug pull.
Only big memorable thing from that season that stands on its own was Shaw confronting Picard over Wolf 359.

>If only the writers watched the old shows.
Would have to rely on Lower Decks writers for that one, but they only referenced the neural parasites once, and it wasn't part of a plotline.
>>
>>218032366
>Only big memorable thing from that season that stands on its own was Shaw confronting Picard over Wolf 359.
which makes no damn sense and is completely hollow because shaw is only ever as smart as the writers, and the writers are dumb as fuck
>picard is le evil because he killed all those people!!
like no dude, quite literally nobody would blame him, he was enslaved and mindraped
>>
>>218032580
He wanted someone to physically blame instead of a nebulous entity and Picard was there. Same thing happened with Sisko, but because they were both in uniform and Picard had rank, SIsko had to really pull his punches in their 'confrontation'. Plus Shaw knew he shouldn't personally blame Picard with his 'Asshole becomes a substitute for charm', line.
Also the acting by Stashwick that really sells it.

good point anon. kind of similarly, you won’t see chaplains (and Troi is basically a non-theistic Starfleet chaplain) leading troops in the field in the modern US military, even if they are technically officers. even military personnel detailed to help the chaplain are usually titled the chaplain’s “assistant” or something to that effect, as opposed to being called an outright subordinate.

I figured Picard in First Contact (the kinosode, not the flick) was alluding to Humans sharing warp technology with the Klingons naively thinking it would lead to world peace on Qo'noS like it did on Earth.

Then ENT established that Klingons had warp tech before us and Humans were pretty much that last major species to enter the interstellar community, but obviously that was for the sake of being able to write episodes with all of the established major races + new planets so I still prefer my interpretation. ENT is just Riker's holo-novel after all.

Picard, being French, would use the appropriate nomenclature.

Chekotay said he’s a vegetarian in an episode I watched last night.. which is like, the most pointless and empty virtue signal you could ever possibly have.
(Not to mention that the writers totally got their Indians mixed up, Chekotay is the “use every part of the animal” Indian not the “cows are sacred” Indian)

Modern writers are so divorced from the past that they can’t even imagine people speaking differently. I cringe anytime anything in a medieval or Renaissance setting uses words like “OK“ or “salesperson“

yeah dude, like im sure a modern woke writer would name a medieval character TIFFANY jfc

Obscure Trek Fact of the day:
Lore was played by Brent's real life twin brother, Trent. Trent Spiner never pursued an acting career officially, but he did find success when he started his medical methamphetamine distribution company, "Crystalline Entity," which was later the subject of a lawsuit between him and CBS.

every fuckinv vulcan is vegetarian other than the outcasts in ENT and maybe spock's half-brother it's not at all weird in the star trek universe A
fake fan

calm down ensign.

I can’t believe these scripts went through so many checks and nobody at any point vetoed the dialogue. If Kirk talked like a Grateful Dead fan, and Picard talked like a Ninja Turtle, those shows would be long forgotten.

Doesn't he have a box of magic animal bones that he uses for ritual purposes? Not very vegan of him.
>>
>>218040962
I could stand it if it was like Deadwood, and actually creative instead of an assortment of reddit-approved content where nobody punches down

That's not inconsistent, hunting and enslaving (presumably in battery farms) are completely different things

Eh it's easy to discern what was S1 Roddenberry space hippie cult posturing and what is part of The True 90s Trek Canon.

Replaced by “make it so” huh? He really did just reskin TOS

One might think that being doxxed including home address and full name might motivate some jannies to act less like a faggot nigger who needs a good beating and dry drowning. But actually no.

I’m a white racist antisemite and the Jake and Ben episodes are cozy. Imagine how much better this country would be if every black male had his father as a successful role model.

this is a symptom of writers who developed their skills reading and writing only fanfiction tier slop and not real books

Is this a real quote? If so, why is modern trek more regressive than old trek? Is this just a byproduct of modern societies hyper individualism and "you don't owe anybody anything" attitude?

All of the fake Indian bullshit on Voyager was due to a Jewish “Indian” expert who didn’t know anything about Native American culture or history and was just making shit up. He was only hired because he is Jewish.
>>
>>218041257
it’s about the victim class holding and justifying grudges against the oppressor pclass. yes, it’s regressive, but so is the modern leftism that informs the nutrek writing staff. The optimistic liberalism of JFK is mostly gone

Also, how close do you think replicated food is to the real thing? There is a difference since characters comment on it and tend to agree that the real thing is better, but I imagine that's just because they are so used to it they can easily nitpick the differences. I guess my question is, is the difference super noticeable or is it just noticeable to people who are food aficionados?
>>
>>218041340
Similar to the difference between real and artificial vanilla i would imagine.
>>
>>218041340
It’s a texture thing. I’m sure the replicator can’t recreate the subtle differences between a pan seared salmon, a poached salmon, and a baked salmon. As a kid I always imaged it must tasted like microwaved food.
I also assumed that was one reason the always made a point of showing Neelix with fires burning to get the texture of cooked food.
>>
>>218041312
To be fair, just chalk it up to cultures in Star Treks future being a jumbled mess, picard is an aggressively British French guy, it's possible all those indian/native cultures just melted together. Obviously this was not the intent and the "expert" was just a retard, but it's a fine enough in universe reasoning.
>>
>>218041340
The difference between a chicken finger and a breaded strip of chicken breast.
Or a fishstick VS an actual filet.
>>
>>218041340
I imagine replicated food tastes good all the time but non replicated food tastes less good and more good with each individual bite — the peaks seem higher when there are valleys
>>
>>218041340
Replicators can't create life so replicated food is missing all the microbes that coat normal food.
>>
>>218041382
>>218041383
I ask because I recall a scene where Riker makes eggs for the crew and they look sorry as hell, but it makes me think that if replicated food lacks some quality that the real thing has, maybe mediocre eggs would be a nice treat in comparison.
>>
>>218041446
How do you even fuck up eggs? You fry them in a pan with some sort of fat, add salt and pepper, done. I'm pretty sure scrambled eggs were the first thing I ever learned to cook as a young child, and here a flagship first officer can't get it right.
>>
>>218041480
Cooking is probably a lost art, that's why people are so eager to go to restaurants with home cooking. It would be like asking the average person today to drive a stick shift or churn butter.
>>
>>218041226
This quote is extra funny because it perfectly fits the stereotype of how black women behave
>>
>>218041340
I imagine it'd depend on the discerning palate of the individual.
There must be people who just chug slop without a care

It’s not the way they used to behave. Black women used to be the most polite and submissive women in any professional setting. They were glad to be there. What happened was a sense of entitlement and empowerment crept in and Black women stopped feeling required to put on their “white persona” and they just got nasty. Got fat and sassy.

Contrast with the way Nichelle Nichols spoke in interviews with a modern blackstress

>in the future they'll eat all the eggs
Truly a utopia.
