Gene just fucked every woman near him. Someone walked in on Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) sucking him off in his office.

He took two women he was fucking out to dinner once, who didn't know about each other and introduced them to to each other by saying that he didn't know who to pick as he liked them both.

Like anything there's two sides to it. Old shows also had writers rooms, they didn't just work off freelancer pitches. Most episodes weren't pitched ones.
Also, lots of episodes have shitty b-plots entirely because people had to come up with so many stories per season, but interesting ideas often couldn't sustain a full episode

I honestly don't know all his sexcapades just the general jist. Gene was a big casting couch guy who was married a few times but also in constant open relationships and engaging prostitutes, he mixed 60s style free love with classic chauvinism and he does sound like a sex addict, pervert and did assault women. It muddies the utopian vision of the show somewhat. A reporter once asked Gene, surely by the 24th century they'd have cured horniness? And Gene replied that by the 24th century they'd have no consent or consequence. He was engaging an affair with his assistant pretty much from 1975 until the end of his life. Majel Barrett, his second wife, was obviously in TOS as Nurse Chapel but also Lwaxana Troi in TNG, literally the horniest character they made. Every time she appeared she lusted after Picard.

> And Gene replied that by the 24th century they'd have no consent or consequence
This is unironically more enlightened than our current hyper consent and hyper consequence world. The more gravity assigned to sexual acts the more you are acknowledging people (women especially) are commodities which have been assigned value relative to access to their engagement in sexual behavior. It’s regressive. Which was the whole point of the free love movement of the 1960s
>>
>>218088188
The problem is, like I said, that his free life was also twinned with classic chauvinism. So as enlightened as it may sound form a conceptual, it really wasn't meant as such by him.

90s Trek distanced itself from Gene by having more drama and conflict between the characters in a way Gene didn't want. And stuff like DS9 challenged his vision of the future too.

Kurtzman has quoted Gene a bunch and talked about his vision too, in a very lip service way.. I don't think the average fan knows this shit about Gene. NuTrek is simply bad because it took le heckin' wholesome Tumblr fanfic quirkiness combined it with left wing social media faux academic thinking. And when you question it, people go, but Star Trek was always woke and look at these 1-3 examples of dumb silly things that happened in 90s shows, Checkmate. This is 100% true, and I was there for that, BUT at least it allowed spec scripts and had more episodes per season so you had the ability to mine for gold. Having 10 episode seasons with an insular writing room locks you into decisions made before the season was even produced so you either get a winner or crap with no chance of course correction mid season. I don't like those odds

Starfleet officers are constantly being punched or swatted with melee weapons. I don't see them wearing force field belts either. Armor that enhances their physical abilities, defenses and available information makes sense. How many times has Data's super strength or speed come in handy? Obviously the same advantage could easily be given to normal Starfleet officers.

>>218089184
Yeah and why don't they just manipulate the gravity in an area to restrain intruders? They have demigod level tech in Star Trek.

>Starfleet officers are constantly being punched or swatted with melee weapons. I don't see them wearing force field belts either.
Bad writing on Berman Trek's part since the force fields were established.
>Armor that enhances their physical abilities, defenses and available information makes sense.
A force field enhances physical abilities as a repulsive force can be harnessed to lift, push etc. Think of how a holodeck character can interact with the world.
As for sensory input, a HUD tricorder can do it.
But hey if you want a STD red angel faggotry thing, that's your right. This could have been done with force field belts much more futuristically. Mecha and Power Armor are for the low fantasy equivalent of scifi. The Federation is easily approaching if not at Kardashev I Territory and can do better.

Thing is sure, you could make it so that a starships main computer instantly responds to boardings (we know they precisely track who is on board, where they are, and when that changes!) with automated defenses of varying strengths but that fact is that's not very interesting story wise, at best you'd just get asspulls as to why the defenses didn't work

Atleast DS9 respected the lore and continuity of the previous shows. It fleshed out the Bajorans, Cardassians, the Maquis, Klingons and the Ferengi. It continued the growth of previous characters like Worf, Gowron, and even some TOS Klingons. It continued the conflict between the Maquis, Bajor, the settlers on the Demilitarized zone with Cardassia. The actors were theater actors just as good as Patrick Stewart. It's how we got Garrak and Quark.

Nothing after ENT was anything near like that.
>>
>>218089427
>Energy inefficient and easily suppressed by dampening fields.
You can suppress actual power armor functionality with a dampening field and make all the servos stop working. A force field belt is much less massive so you have a net energy savings. Also a hud tricorder doesn't need a Glitter Boy housing to make it work.

Either way, money isn't some abstract concept in the federation. Its just that on earth and in starfleet personal wealth and money mostly isn't needed because they live in a post scarcity society where all their basic needs are provided, a lot of scutwork is made obsolete through technology, and people are largely free to self determine.
Anyone who doesn't like it is free to fuck off into the wider galaxy where there is probably a whole planet dedicated to whatever you want that you can't get on earth.
Want to get high as fuck, go visit planet Dr'um-Cerkle where the atmosphere is full of hallucinogenic pollen and its just an endless music festival.
Want to fuck like a degenerate little piggy? I'm sure Risa is happy to oblige.
Want to rape? There's a rape-gang planet. be a criminal, go join the orion syndicate or something.
Want to be a greedy megajew, go find some ferengi.
But every member of the federation is free to do whatever they want as long as they've met the guidelines of being a warp capable species that has solved most of its major internal problems, and has something to contribute to the federation.

An armor powering joints would use far, far less energy that generating a literal field of force energy, so no it would a lot less susceptible to dampening and it would be many times more efficient energy-wise. Anon. It was a television show with shoe-string budgets and cardboard sets.
Yes, realistically, the federation should be all about biotech and cybernetics.
Not to mention that until DS9 you never saw an actual war in space. Hell, you barely even see battles, because the premise of the show is what would happen if you solved all the social issues and set aside old grudges, and everyone worked together, what would it look like. The people in starfleet aren't aliens, they're not robots, they're not even any more highly evolve, they're just 'us' without the petty distraction. If you make everyone borgified genetic supermen then you take away from what it was trying to do.
Plenty of other space opera and scifi settings that explore that kind of trans-humanism.

Picard is the way he is because he is shaped by his experiences. Notably one of those things is being childless and basically hating children. The TNG episode Tapestry explores this quite well. Maybe Picard could be a good parent if his life unfolded differently, but then he would not be the Picard we are presented with in the show.

For the most part those are families of starfleet officers, and they have civilians serving on the ship as well. Not to mention they're constantly towing around colonist and transporting federation citizens.
And in times of battle, and ships serving in more dangerous roles usually have the families left behind.

the whole point of the borg is assimilation, so it makes sense to invest in your wetware collective drones, not so much for their own preservation as ensuring they can infiltrate any species they find, and figure out a way to adapt to defend.
In their first real appearance they don't care about the people so much as their technology, and making new drones was just a byproduct.

The episode also has an Andorian replace Spock as the Science Officer of the Enterprise (because of said time travel shenanigans), which is neat.

Explain why eugenics are bad. Protip: you can't, feddie scum
>>
>>218091579
I actually agree with you but only in part.

It should only be allowed specifically for an advanced civilization like the UFP that has already ended want, achieved warp travel, and has smoothed out most of its rough edges.
The real danger for eugenics has already passed at this point and really, there's not much of a benefit to forbidding it.

It's really dangerous for a developing society that still has factions and powers at variance, though. It becomes an arms race.
>>
>>218091579
Eugenics isn't bad.. for other species.
Humans in Trek are always 1 step away form becoming megalomaniacal supervillains that want to rule/destroy all they can.
Augmented humans (or anything with human DNA) always turn out to be evil, and the more evil they are, the more they act like a cartoon villain.
Yes, even Bashir.
>>
>>218091579
Mostly because it's always full of unintended consequences, and the fact that chosing a partner based on genetic compatibility ignores the importance of the social compatibility needed to raise a child into a productive member of society.

No. Ancient wolves started to mingle with humans and just started to change with domestication. You bring up boars when it's a great example of domestication. Look, for one, dogs have extremely simple haplotypes, friendly in a dog is magnitudes easier to logically define, and genetically isolate than friendliness in humans

Secondly, sure, your plan might work IF YOU LIVED FOR 5,000 YEARS and were able to enforce your standard for the same amount of rigor over 100 human generations

You understand that DOGS breed roughly 10-15 times faster than humans right?

Anyways it only took like 4 or 5 generations for that Russian team domesticating foxes to get them acting doggy. Just keep breeding empathetic, intelligent people and sterilizing self-centered, annoying people and you have functional eugenics.

I think ultimately one thing it comes down to is that in Trek times physical disabilities won't be stigmatized, so it's completely fine if there are people who exist that don't chose to be 'fixed'

If I find someone annoying then objectively they're annoying, simple as. If you don't get it you're probably one of the annoying ones.

It’s weird that they had an episode where something actually happened and the villain completely cucks the scraggly voice captain and kills one of the few sane characters on the show and then next episode it’s just back to the homo mines of interpersonal buttboy bullshit from people we don’t care about.
It’s weird to me someone actually pushed for “maybe there should be some action or dilemmas to solve in our space show” for a middle episode when everything else is just gay CW drama.

Psychologists design diagnostic surveys that test for all sorts of things, friendliness wouldn’t be hard to measure. I’m sure they already have something for conduct disorders in children.

It's better than Voyager. First season is a little bumpy and the last is atrocious due to the shitty ending but overall it is worth a watch.

Why is it that, out of all Solids, she hates Cardassians the most?
>the look of pure hatred when Garak wants to ask her a question
>ditto when Dukat introduces himself to her
>and again when Damar gives his freedom speech
>once more when she orders total spoonhead death

Things Enterprise has to offer you:

Worst Captain in the franchise
Worst cast in the franchise
Ugliest lead ship in the franchise
Abandons it's core premise even faster than Voyager did
VOY was already dumpster diving for unused TNG scripts, Enterprise is reaching for the soiled ones at the bottom of the dumpster
Has an entire season based on 9/11 that has aged like milk left out in the sun
Has what's considered a worst of all time contender class finale. Not in Trek history, in *tv* history
Overall poor to the level it put the entire franchise in a coma for years

But don't let anybody say it's theme song is bad. It's fine.

Enjoy!

Because Brannon Braga is stupid.

She hates the Federation most of all. Their equality mindset and Cardassia's supreme arrogance are obviously at odds with their core philosophy of Changeling supremacy.
