You mean there's some topless scenes but they aren't that prominent. I'm sure you don't mean it's a non-nude series where there's no boobies at all. Not for 2 straight films

actually not bad! I remember some anon saying it was boring but knowing it was a Barker adaption I went into it embracing the slow noir story.
the main problem was the goofy looking mutants. you could instantly improve this film by making them creepy lizard-people. that was my main issue with Nightbreed as well desu.
also I think I missed something but seemed like he got stabbed with the freak juice and they never resolve that.

Ok the actual ending ending execution was good, I somewhat dread how it would be extended by 13+ minutes but the somewhat shortened cut was pretty good here, I liked some of the camera tricks and stuff like staging of shots and hiding other characters behind editing and such, don’t expect to see a blu in 5 or so years but good effort

Just finished. Another Letterboxd Top 250 horror, and again not so much a horror movie. It's Tsukamoto though so it's understandable why it's labeled that way. It's mental illness kino, like Clean Shaven or Die My Love, aka the main character is a nut, isn't sympathetic, and were unsure what really does or doesn't happen. This one's about a mother that has a condition where she sees two of every person and isn't sure which is the real one. Her kid is a toddler and gets taken away from her and she's trying, not very successfully, to get him back. She also meets a guy who persistently woos her, but in the end we're not sure what really happened or didn't. Reminded me a LOT of my own mother and was very anxiety inducing. This felt very low budget and sparsely produced but Tsukamoto knows how to get results with very little. Parts of this are annoying and I'm sure some people will find how unreliable our POV character is makes it all seem pointless, but I had a good time with this and was stressed the fuck out.

I liked it a lot more for the ideas than the execution, the premise is uniqe but its too bland, there's hardly violence, gore or action, you can tell they didnt use so much of Clive dialogue and that the budget was low with all those identical neon lights, its a shame.
Also the lead is suposed to be a bit of a pedo right, I mean the girl is suposed to be 18 or so and yet shes had quite a career on prostitution, he says its been years since he worked as a bodyguard (pimp) and that he used to love her.
Interesting music too.

I felt the same way when I was a wee lad. Getting interested in photography gave me more of an appreciation for how light is handled in those old black and white films, though.
Finding good transfers and high quality rips is important. You can get away with a bit of loss of shadow tone and some pixelation in full color movies, but when the film is black and white, you really want to preserve those deep blacks and depth of middle tone greys. It can make all the difference.
>>
>>218101103
Even the mainstream ones are a bit cuckoo bananas or hang around crazy longer than anyone in their right mind should. Not horror but if you want a wild Mormon ride: Tabloid (2010); Murder Among the Mormons (2021); any Ruby Franke or Lori Daybell documentary; Abducted in Plain Sight (2017)
I watched Abducted in Plain Sight today and I thought these people were retarded til LDS appeared in a title card and then I was like, oh yeah that checks out

It's a movie made by an unproven director and Andrew Kevin Walker has kind of fallen off ever since The Killer possibly even earlier. I once read an interview of him where he said that Se7en was written based on his horrible time living in NYC in the late 80s with all the rampant crime and drugs everywhere and so that's why he saw it as much as a horror film as a crime thriller and it got me thinking how a lot of great horror stories have historically reflected the fears and uncertainties of the times we live in and the people inhabiting them. Is it any coincidence that America and Hollywood was largely "done" with horror in the 90s and wanted to label them all "thrillers" instead as soon as the Cold War ended and the future was looking brighter than ever whereas now that the quality of life of living in the modern Western 1st world is rapidly nearing 3rd world levels, horror movies are bigger than ever before?

Even the Chinese have started watching horror movies in significant numbers even though the CCP supposedly banned it all in 2008 so Xi must have reversed it at some point. And now we also have women making body horror movies that reflects their fears of aging and not being pretty enough to compete with other women for male attention in this attention economy we're living in presently and we have black people making horror movies about their greatest fear: racist white suburban people and vampires turning them against themselves, causing a loss of group identity and ultimate demise.

Was it that bad? I only watched the No End House season since that was the only creepypasta of those adapted that interested me, it was very good for the first few episodes but the pacing towards the end didn't feel right. Way better than I expected for this kind of show and I'm always happy to see John Carroll Lynch.

I can't imagine having so little attention span that you think "nothing happens" in Exorcist 3 or that Blatty doesn't have a good sense for cinematography or knows how to write a good script. Just watch The Ninth Configuration, guy was both a good director AND script writer, he also wrote the script for the original Exorcist too for which he got one of the only two Oscars it ended up winning. Idk which cut of Exorcist III you watched but it was probably the theatrical which was mandated by the studio to please ADHD morons like you going against his vision so he never made another kino again. Even the so called "director's cut" we have now of Exorcist III isn't the real thing since most of the original footage was destroyed.

This. I only started making headway in post production in the industry in my 40s. If you want to do it, start now. It takes a bit of time to get things moving, but 5 years from now you'll wish you had started 5 years ago.
The biggest hurdle is accepting that you're going to suck at it at first. If you can put your ego aside and embrace the process of learning, practicing, and constantly getting better, you'll make headway faster than you'd think, but nobody ever starts something from scratch and is instantly great at it.

I watched "Mother of Flies" recently. It's a film made by a family production company (meaning that the husband, wife, and kids do pretty much everything in the production process). They taught themselves how to make films and have been improving with each production. This last film was picked up by Shudder and has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has some issues (the acting is pretty rough especially), but they're moving up in the world. Horror is a great entry point for budding film makers. Just go for it.
>>
>>218119724
>How did you make your breakthrough in your horror movie director fantasies?
I spent a decade making short films and then 2 features (none of which are horrors) only to realise that the indie scene is massively oversaturated and horror is the only genre that makes money without star power, so I decided to make a horror film that I'm currently editing.
You're not too old, depending on a bunch of factors. The way I've made films in the past was a young man's game, relying on impulsiveness and high energy focus. Going forward, I'll have to replace that with better planning and a larger team. If you have more than like 5 grand, give or take, you can afford it with proper planning. You just need the experience. So hire some actors and make boring 5 minute short films of people talking to get used to all areas of film production

Ouch. I dunno what to tell you. Filmmaking is exponentially cheaper than it was 20 years ago, but it's still not free.
Also you can make a short for less than a hundred bucks which is where you should be starting anyway

>steady job in the film industry
lmao, good one
Not happening unless you're prepared to work for basically no money below the line. The industry is dying a pretty painful death right now. If you want to make films, make films. If you want to make money, get a job that's hiring and start saving. If you want to do both, join the line (it's a very long line that isn't moving)
>>
>>218120875
"The industry" is a gig economy. There really isn't such a thing as a steady job. if you want something steady that pays well, you'll want to get as far away from the arts as you possibly can. Nobody goes into film or music or art because they "just need a job". It's the long shot you take because you want to take a chance at fulfilling your dream.

>AI took over graphic design and art and even motion graphics entirely
Not yet. I've seen it crop up in graphic design the most (and it looks like shit), but not in art in any meaningful way and while it probably will affect the motion graphics industry at some point, it hasn't come for it yet. The bigger problem is that there are fewer films and shows being made overall. Hollywood is in a slump because people at the top are getting too greedy.

>unless you have an uncle you're not getting shit
Breaking into the entertainment industry has never been easy. It requires you to be a self-starter. If you're looking at job boards and thinking "I can't find anything", then it's not for you. Sure, nepotism exists, but so does old fashioned networking. You need to start making the stuff that you eventually want to be hired for so you can build yourself a portfolio. Nobody will hire you unless you can prove you can do the job and the best way of proving you can do it is to have already done it. Meanwhile meet as many people as you can so people learn that you exist. When your skills get good enough and you meet enough people, you'll start finding opportunities. They'll mostly be pro bono at first, but if you keep going and build up a reputation, you may start getting paid work. This process takes awhile (think years), so it's best to get started asap.

In the meantime, you work a shit job to pay the bills.

>>
>>218121245
When it comes to horror movies everyone knows you add +1 point to its IMDB score and I think it's generally pretty reliable to watch anything in the +5 range. 4 and below is usually pretty bad for any genre. Looking at a few of the reviews now and it gets criticized mainly for being artsy and slow which means 98% of this board was never going to like it no matter what anyway.

if you're trying to get a first job, it's not going to be a dream position. You just need to get any job, and then start moving forward from there.
Don't wait for help wanted signs. Go to restaurants and bars. Apply for positions like barback (bars), dishwasher, or busboy. You don't need experience to do those jobs and there's a good chance you'll find somewhere that needs one. Those positions have a lot of turnover. You can move forward pretty quickly to make better money if you're a hard worker and you don't fuck around while you're on the clock. Barbacks move to bartenders, dishwashers move to prep cooks, and busboys move to servers. If you're a tipped employee (bartender or server), and you live in a reasonably well populated area, you may be able to get by working 3-4 days a week. You don't have to want to work in the food industry forever, but it will generate income that you can use to parlay into your next move. If you want to make yourself a more attractive prospect, get a food handlers license (or whatever your state calls it). Restaurants and bars always want people who have that because someone on premises needs to have one if they get raided by the health department. It'll cost like $20. You do a stupidly easy training course online and then take an in person test.
You could also work retail. Same thing - you don't wait for places to ask for help - you just go into establishments with your resume and ask if they're hiring. If you don't have any experience at all in retail, you won't be able to get a job at a super high class place, but that goes for pretty much any job. The more desirable a position, the more expertise you'll be expected to have.
>>
>>218122075
>>218121580
If you can book up on the basics of microsoft office, you can go to a temp agency. They'll test you on various office-related tasks (typing, basic spreadsheet stuff, etc) and then keep your info on file. When offices need someone to fill in temporarily, the agency places people from their files. A lot of times those gigs end up offering temps full time employment if they prove capable. The other way into office culture with zero experience is getting a job in the mail room.

Most of my favourite horrors are about a 3 or 4 on IMDb. A lot of that rating being low is going to be
>poor quality or old film
>too much gore
>highly offensive
>graphic or sleezy
>mean
If you get a higher rating some of that is
>this is a praised art film, you can't complain the film stock is from the 70s and was bought from a surplus store
>ppl told me this was classic
The ones that don't have the highly offensive grind house feel down votes might rise to a high six or seven, but all that's really telling you is there's less blood or the incest isn't shown on screen etc, not that it's a better movie, just a more broadly tolerable one

That's accurate; it is both artsy and slow. Some of the shots are straight up beautiful and the fact that it was made on a shoestring budget by a family is extremely impressive. I liked it, but I also watch a lot of indie films in general (not just horror). I don't expect most anons would have the patience for it, but the point is that they made a film that was picked up by a mainstream streamer and they didn't have a huge budget or a big crew and were self-taught filmmakers.

Joe Bob Briggs has talked about this too. He was confused why people seem to think you need tons of money and to live in LA to make a film. Anyone can make a movie with their friends. You can buy cheap LED panel lights for a couple hundred bucks if you want to get a lot of them with all the diffusers and gels and stands, and pro grade cameras can be bought for a few thousand. There's a start up cost, but then you own the gear which you can reuse over and over again. And if that's too much, everyone owns a camera in their pocket these days that trumps even pro-sumer cameras from the late 90s. There are tons of great horror films that didn't have everything they needed, but they got creative with the resources they did have.

have you done any PA work on other peoples' films? Learning the ropes a bit by doing grunt work on other indies is not a bad idea, plus you can start building a roster of people to potentially tap for help when you do your own thing.

One thing I've learned is there really isn't a moment where you feel like you "break through". Once in a rare while, a short will go gangbusters and then Hollywood will want to option it for a high budget follow up, but most of the time the progress is slow and steady and when you do start getting bigger opportunities, it just feels like a continuation of the grind. The whole "artist gets discovered" story that was sold to us as kids doesn't really exist.

I've just worked on some short films with friends where I was helping out. I think my aim will be to write something that's easy to film, have it in my head. Even if it's one of those one man found footage flicks like Leaving DC.

If anything I feel like the reason why we don't see many horror movies on IMDB/Letterboxd top 250 lists is because a lot of horror fans actually share your attitude so they often clash with the ones who have more mainstream tastes. It has less to do with the actual quality and more to do with one camp expecting something entirely different than the other camp and getting upset when those expectations aren't met and vice versa (for example anons here getting upset when Barbarian and Weapons weren't 100% super serious horror from start to finish). This is why objectively great modern horror movies like VVitch, The Lighthouse, Hereditary and Bring Her Back have much lower ratings in the lower range of 7.x than the latest sci-fi epic or Nolan slop that rabid fanboys spam with their 10/10 scores.

Whites are such cucks, if any other race was portrayed as the only bad guys in a movie, there would be riots. Whites lost already and don’t even realize it.

There's also the fact that moreso than any other genre you will find more than a few people who will unironically refuse to watch movies older than the 2000s because people's sensibilities back then will seem tame to the levels of violence we're used to nowadays. I've seen anons openly admit they were disappointed by the lack of gore in absolute classics like Halloween and TCM the latter of which they also felt misled by its title because Leatherface barely uses his chainsaw in the film even though that has no bearing on the quality of the end product at all, their priorities in what they want and expect out of a horror film supercedes literally everything else. You won't find fantasy fans disappointed by the lack of fantasy elements in something like GoT is all I'm saying. It's really not that horror fans' standards are any higher than any other fanbase's since most fantasy and sci-fi is actually pretty shit too yet you will still find dozens of movies from both of those genres in the IMDB and Letterboxd top 250 and none of us will live to see another horror movie crack into those lists because horror is a polarizing and transgressive genre by its very nature despite its niche audiences.

It's the burden of expectations and very specific ones hence all the "X isn't horror" nonsense we constantly see in these threads that often contradict the viewpoints of the director and/or writer who made the movie they watched in a genre they consider themselves experts on while continuously failing to understand the concept of subjectivity and that there's more to horror than simply repeating tired tropes for the sake of meeting some arbitrary scare/gore quota.

Patterson Project is a shitload of fun. A lot of ff in general is going to be made by filmmakers who are or remember being an idiot film student, which is why a lot of them have someone explaining how you'd fake this on film (Butterfly Kisses and Frogman both have this, but for shit that goes wrong on set, the Patterson Project is great)

>Anon awoke the autobump poster
Thanks anon, just in time for me to watch a movie. It's a flaw of the rating system, it's why a lot of horror sites rate things like censorship board warnings, so it's not
>Is it a good film?
It's
>What level of gore is this?
>Does anyone say fuck?
>Does anyone fuck on screen and unstimulated?
The person looking for the intricate mystery or witches or zombies might still baulk at the eating actual entails or frogs, so for horror fans shit like

Is worth a lot more than is the overall product "good"

I liked the ending but the one major flaw in the film is the bald cap lol. It wouldn't have been so surreal if she just shaved her head.
The film is full of has a bunch of nazi germany allusions, that's one of them. The SS logo for the band being another.

>The film is full of has a bunch of nazi germany allusions, that's one of them. The SS logo for the band being another.
yes I realized that too, I supposed shaving the head was a parallel to neo-nazis aswell. And the singer named "R" as "hitl-ER" sounding I guess.

> Definitely leaving the house to see it.
Why? You can pee, eat and poop and stretch whenever you want or browse phone.
I have a home theatre and the 5.1 set up properly sounds just as good at home than a theater. It is powerful.

Yeah, it's the best kind of subtext really. You don't need to see it to understand it's a film about a girls obsession, but it's supported by a substructure about german obsession with hitler.

figure it out, tard. Plenty has been spoon fed to you already. I'm starting to get a good idea why you're unemployed. If a boss has to hold your hand through everything this much, they might as well just do whatever they asked you to do themselves.
