I wanted a flashback of Arlan knighting Duncan as he is clearly super sick and dying, and he just does the sword movement and proclaims he’s a knight. Says he can’t remember the words and they don’t matter, only the meaning behind them matters or something like that

That’s what I thought they were foreshadowing when Duncan didn’t knight raymun, because he didn’t know the words.

So dunc isn’t a “fraud”. He was knighted, just unconventionally. And Arlan himself was either knighted the same way, with less emphasis on specific words but rather the meaning behind it. Or it happened so many years ago he can’t remember the words anyway

Instead he just didn’t knight him because “meh”.

I get the message. Dunc is a true knight regardless of whether he was knighted, but I preferred the more ambiguous idea of it. Where if the actual story was told a lot of nobles and vain knights would say he’s an imposter while people like Lyonel and boots in the mud folk would say it’s irrelevant.

Then again we still didn’t see Arlan die so I assume we get at least one more pre death flashbacks next season? Hopefully a couple. I wanna see him elaborate on how his nephew squire died just before he encountered dunc, hence him being so drunk and depressed and basically adopting duncan as a surrogate son

Also I loved his fight in flea bottom. Gave me Bronn in season 1 vibes mixed with Jorah, I like it when you see genuinely skilled rough and tumble characters like this rather than the elegant choreography of something like a Jaime style character fighting. He’s fought for decades and is a good killer, he knows how to kill and what works. He also has no fear of death

Arlan probably believes that it is your actions and deeds (your story) that makes you a knight, not something that can be granted, i think the pennytree story here in this moment is supposed to be about assumptions people make based on status, everyone assumes the men that didn't come home to reclaim their penny must have died, but there is a possibility that some just decided not to go home and live a new life, started a new story, nobody knows Arlan, he might as well be a nailed penny to a tree, but he is content with that because he knows his story as do the people he helped, he knows that he is a knight because of the things he did not because of some words that were said, and sharing his story with Dunk leads Dunk to becoming the greatest knight in history regardless of the words, it's Dunk's story and he should be more focused on getting on with it instead of constantly fraud checking himself and questioning his place
