The Ferengi are an underrated military power. The D'Kora is able to trade evenly with a Galaxy class, which means they have a whole shipbuilding industry that is churning out ships on par with the best of any regional power. They probably have a lot of PMC mercenary groups rather than a singular national force, similar to how Klingons have a bunch of smaller feudal house militaries.

He recognizes that Bashir is young, naive, and out of his depth on the frontier. He sees potential exploitation in Julian, so he approaches him, reads him like a book, makes him uncomfortable to give himself an ineffable air of mystery, and then retreats with all sorts of vague allusions to how he was indeed a spy and had subversive intentions for him.

But these are not necessarily sexual intentions at all -- that is a very surface level read, projection on your part. It's professional subversion. Garak's entire character is about how he is indeed a true believer in Cardassian statism. He's the truest Cardassian in DS9. He goes into exile rather than rock the ship of state. He tries to genocide the Founders because he loves Cardassia, not out of self-interest, and he can always be trusted to pass a message on through the appropriate channels because he truly believes all of that shit he says about Cardassian superiority and his love of Cardassian literature, where everything is about total sacrifice to the state, is genuine.

Saying Garak is just some faggot interested in Bashir's asshole is an incredible disservice to a complicated character.

I think that sort of fandom doesn't really exist anymore. You used to be able to go online and you'd find technical commentaries style websites debating the fiction and explaining and rationalizing it and thinking about it in interesting ways. But that sort of internet is gone, and now most people act like it's a chore to read two entire sentences. Here's an example from the cartoon's equivalent, there's just nothing there that comes close to the old technical manuals and source books and so on.

When the DS9 writers came up with the Orion Syndicate, were they specifically thinking of the Orions from TOS or did they just choose a random space-related word that sounded cool for their crime syndicate? Every time I read an annoucment from Central Command in the news I get a weird feeling
>>
>>218375512
I don't know, but it's undeniable it happened. I guess it's a few things. Part of it is just a dearth of good content that is worth thinking about, TNG and DS9 lent themselves to thinking about the ships and the political entities and all that kind of stuff. I don't think a lame cartoon and stuff like that is fertile ground for the same sort of people and the same sort of thinking. When I first got into Trek TNG and DS9 were only a few years old, movies were still coming out with Picard, but now all that stuff is old and analyzed to death.

Part of it is you can't gatekeep so easily, which you see in /trek/ every day, so any time you try to talk about Trek seriously you'll always get a flood of gays wanting to talk about a cartoon, disinterested triple post-ironic shitposters from discord, etc. This infects and impacts all the places the community forms around, e.g. Memory Alpha, and just changes the character of the community.

Part of it is just a change in what the internet is and how people use it, hardly anyone just makes their own site anymore, everything is a reddit thread or a post on X or a youtube video, stuff gets lost in the shuffle, influenced by gay moderators, and so on.

Bashir being genetically enhanced was a bad idea. Everyone admits it. Behr admits it. Siddig has been saying it from the beginning and wasn't happy with the episode when it was given to him.

It's revisionist history, pure and simple, and makes his earlier interactions with Garak odd. Even if you think Bashir could be hoodwinked and fooled by a mentally agile, trained operative like Garak (which I believe he could be), he doesn't act like someone who is genetically enhanced during their interactions and it was clearly just something they threw in haphazardly later.

But that's the problem with genetically enhancing too much. If horses, cattle, and mountain families are any indication, when you narrow/tighten the genetics too much, you create a quazi-autistic mess which may excel in nearly everything, but is fatally weak in at least a few things.

Meanwhile, being inherently smart doesn't make you inherently aware of how the real world works. Sherlock Holmes didn't know that the earth travelled around the sun.

>>218379782
Actors tend to be unintelligent and low quality people. They also have to talk a certain way to not be excluded from the industry entirely, which I can sympathize with. If HR walks around the office and asks what I think about black people, obviously I'm not going to tell them, and that same dynamic is at play here. You can give actors the benefit of the doubt that they don't actually believe what they're saying and it's just another role. And even without that, ultimately they're just dumb drama kids so what does it matter?
>>

Childhood is idolizing Dukat. Adulthood is idolizing Damar. Dukat is your textbook performative chud egomaniac whose brain is rotted by hasperat fever and so prioritizes "bleaching" as many Bajoran bitches as he can and littering the galaxy with mutts, all in the interests of "Cardassian supremacy" of course. Damar, on the other hand, is classic humble patriot who understands that the battle for the white Cardassian race begins at home.

Fuck it, I'll post my SNW review.
Visually it seemed okay. I'm really not opposed to female characters, but why are they all ugly or terrible actresses? New Spock guy was okay, Pike was fine outside the cringe millennial humor and Una was fine. Black doctor guy was okay.
Chapel and La'an were terrible, New Uhura is bald and terrible, and the one with the 2020 dyke haircut needs to die. How is 5/8 of the cast female and yet only one of them is tolerable?
If there's any secret SNW defenders here, give me a recommended episode to skip to and I'll try it.

>>218387375
You would think that given the billions spent literal hundreds of flopped reboots and IP rapes there would be one production that just decided to shoot the show the same way the original was shot, and use completely unoriginal scripts heavily sourced from the original show, or dusty fan script submission no one ever got around to, and then just see if that gets people to like it like they liked old thing.

Did they travel to the center of the galaxy in that one, or outside of it? Either would be cool to explore, the galactic core is lousy with stars and travel between worlds would be even shorter than usual. Extragalactic rogue star systems and even orphaned planets would be neat to see too, there's always life somewhere. Even that big void in the Delta quadrant had night people living in it, there should absolutely be some people knocking around between galaxies.
