yeah we weren't too happy about it, us being lannisters
also, there were about 200 lannister soldiers, 30-50 taryls, and only maybe a dozen or so dothraki that came in the second or third week.
there were so few dothraki that we had to fight them 3-4 of us on one of them, and we couldn't kill them. it was a bit lame for that, guess they didn't have enough time to do makeup and hair on more, or hadn't brought enough costumes with them. dunno.
there were 50 dothraki horsemen though, but all played by stunt riders, and then main dothraki actors like kaleesi's pals.
the horse charge was real, they stopped about 5 yards in front of our ranks, so we just had to hold it and trust in the riders.
when you see them burst through the lines, that's a setup just with stuntmen lannisters of which there were 12-20.

we were shown a 3d animation of all the scenes from the episodes/battle before we filmed it, so we knew roughly what was going to happen.
but even so, after weeks of being together just as lannisters/tarlys, we felt invincible and quite a strong bond/pride as lannisters.
was some lannister/Tarly jibing day to day but all in fun.
the dothraki extras that came later had previously filmed the year before, so some had a chip on their shoulders, some were alright though.
didn't feel good to have to lose, ans then be prisoners afterwards.

>>
>>218374546
yeah plenty. about 250 of us every day, all filmed on location in a nature reserve, so what you see is what it looked like. only the mountains on the horizon were fake.
we were uniformed at the start of each day pre-dawn, busses about 10 minutes into the nature reserve, then there they had some big tents where we were briefed, then given shields/spears/swords/bows outside. most had either a spear or shield, some with both. not many with a sword, and about 20 with bows - the group you see fire in a square formation at the dragon.
a lot of unfiroms used on dummies for dead bodies on the battlefield, and some really big pikes/long spears used as battlefield decoration.
later on when we were given more free reign on the battlefield, some of us - like me, picked up the very long spears and used them haha
maybe you can see that in 4k on a big screen, it's pretty far in the background at those times

Yeah, I generally hated how the War of the Five Kings was portrayed outside of the scenes depicting strategem, I.E. people talking.
Blackwater is like the highest rated episode of the series and it's absolutely embarrassing and makes no sense in its own right, let alone compared to its source counterpart.
>mfw Tywin riding onto the MUDDY beaches of the MUD GATE with cavalry
Bravo, Dabid. I get that you spent all your budget on the wildfire explosion, but did you have to cut out the King's Gate siege entirely? Like not even mention it, or make it a plot point? I don't even like Stannis, but this whole subplot portrayed him as a retard.

mostly wood, the spears had some weight to them, but with semi-rigid plastic/rubber spear-tips.
the long spears/pikes were 12 foot long and fairly heavy
the shields were pretty heavy, so you had to get used to holding them up. they had pointed bottoms so you could make a shield wall. they were wood and could take a beating.
helmets were metal, so pretty heavy.
the bows worked but were weak, shot arrows maybe 20-30 feet at most

I get that actors want their faces to be seen, but would it kill them to wear a helmet just for 1 fucking episode since its an actual battle? The only person who wore a helmet was Tyrion. We never got to see Hound use his cool helmet again and fucking Stannis is leading the charge without one

it was pretty cool honestly, 50 horses coming down the hill at us, and us all in a shield wall/spears in between, archers behind. the noise of them coming down, the hooves on the earth, and the dothraki/stunt riders all yelping and waving their weapons.
they did a couple of sort of warm up runs first, so they came a bit slower to reach their 5 yard mark, then after that they came down fast and then would stop fairly quickly. no danger of them colliding with us.
think we just trusted the riders, they were a special horse stunt team, a lot of riders from England that had worked on quite a few big films with horse battles etc.
was cool to experience though.
we watched them charge through the stuntman lines afterwards from the side.
later on there were some horses coming through but fairly slowly during the skirmish where everyone's fighting everyone, so they were passing through behind us - but only a couple.
Jaime lannister and the other leaders were on horses behind us for several weeks, shouting the commands you hear.
>SPEARS AND SHIELDS
and "Hold the line!"
was pretty cool, as we felt a connection with our commanders then
it was 6 weeks overall, 3 or 3 and a half weeks of battle filming. one week of formation marching, couple of weeks of training at the start

Tywin started the active fighting and commited major war crimes even before Robert died. Oh sure, he covered his tracks...by sending out the most recognizable knight in the kingdom "incognito". it was 12-13 hour days outside on location in December, so a bit cold at times.
we'd arrive before dawn and be leaving just as the sun was setting, marching back up the hill in lines with our spears etc looked pretty cool.
one dude snuck some pictures of that, I saw them and asked a dude to send them to me but he never did. so they might be lost to time now.
weren't allowed phones or any personal items outside of wardrobe.
it meant that we reverted to a medieval feeling, no tech or distractions, didn't usually know what time it was apart from the height of the sun. we rested and ate outside sitting on rocks in our kit the whole day. people hung out next to the little campfires to warm and dry their boots.
quite a few little games were invented by soldier extras to pass the time between rehearsals/takes

I thought it was fine, definitely more character-focused than hard strategy but it worked really well. The mood, the lighting, the music, even choreography was pretty engaging. Stannis fighting on the frontlines was weird but they had to give him something and there was no other character on his side to focus on after Davos went under.

after a few weeks one guy brought a pack of cards tucked in his boot, only played them in the morning when waiting for set up for an hour or so.
others came up with a game where they'd jab their spear end into the mud, make a hole, and the other guys would have to put their spears in the hole as fast as they could one after another.
we did shot out with rocks one day.
some others made a game of throwing water bottles into an empty dustbin - which turned into a team game involving cards after a while.

yeah, they did us lannisters wrong.
i think they just wanted to show that no matter the army, a dragon makes it unfair.
the situation was that we'd just fought at high garden and won, marcheed continously, so the back 1/3 of the army stops to rest while 2/3rds go on to King's landing.
we were the doomed stragglers. maybe if we'd had the full 3/3rds we could have had a chance and shot down the dragon too.
>>218375241
the long spears/pikes would definitely have done the horsemen in, if we'd had enough of them. there were only a handful of those props though, you see them more on the battlefield and leaned up against wagons later on. a few of us took them without permission, the prop guys were generally suspicious.

>they should've held the line logically

They did, the dragon punched a hole through their shield wall which the Dothraki rode through. It pisses me off how the Dothraki are hyped up to be unbeatable in open field yet light cavalry will always lose to a straight charge into a shield wall with spears. Without the Dragon, I unironically believe the Lannisters could have repelled the attack and survived

have to add, James Faulener who played randyl tarly was cool throughout the whole thing. always there, shouting commands, and when we'd lost and had the prisoners scene where we're all in a big square formation in front of kaleesi, he and dickon staryed among us for all the rehearsals etc for 3 days or so. he was making jokes and such.
at the start of the fest day of filming the prisoners scene he stood out front and gave a speech to us soldiers
>now you've all fought the good fight, we did our best, and that's what counts - but I still can't believe I lost to a mangy rescue dragon
was interesting watching him work, he adapted details to each take, so after quite a few of them he had incorporated a lot of small additions - think that might be why he stayed for the whole thing.. he was a classically trained actor, Royal Shakespeare company, 40 years of acting.

don't know if it was implied they'd gone on ahead with the front 2/3rds, or whether they never had any at the siege of highgarden.
but yeah, would have made a difference.
the battle was labelled an ambush in the series.
>>
Why did you fags hype Dunk up like he was some good fighter? Dude is clearly a bum.
>>
>>218375463
The Dothraki wouldn't even have the numbers game going for them if they invaded Westeros. The Dothraki had, at best, 60,000 riders? The Reach alone could muster an army of 100,000. All the great houses combined would muster and army of about 300,000 and change. They would've smashed the Dothraki into pieces.
>>
>>218375570
who hyped his combat ability up? Dunk's virtues are not combat related. he becomes a solid fighter later in life, though never reaching Barristan or Jaime tier, but early in life he pulls through on brute strength and dogged persistence rather than skill
>>
>>218375463
yeah it's funny because unsullied would be favorite target of Mongols.
Dothraki are quite pathetic since all they know is charge at enemy until it works or they all die
>>
>>218375617
Dunk is a great brawler. If it comes down to fists and grappling he's pretty goated.
>>
>>218375461
did you make that? that's cool
our line was only really two men deep with archers scattered behind, we were low on numbers due to the bulk of the army having gone out ahead. I think shield and spear walls normally have more men behind. but yeah we might have had a chance without the dragon.
it sowed chaos, which is what the makers were trying to put across, according to their interviews.
the directors on location were telling us the ideas of "chaos" once the dragon really wrecks our ranks, despite our discipline at holding against the charges.
we were told to break ranks after the fires had done a lot, so you see men running in all directions.
one tactic might have been to just go in close with dothraki and stick to them no matter what, so she couldn't safely use the dragon on us.

Yet this army had given up nomadic battle tactics and proved useless when facing the masters of this style of warfare. you can very obviously tell who GRRM wants you to like or dislike as a character simply based on how their name sounds

i don't know how to explain it or how to teach others to recognize but there's a very recognizable type of morpheme combinations that GRRM uses to concoct a name you're supposed to like, or supposed to dislike

like when you hear "wyman man.derly" you know GRRM wants you to like him, or at least respect him. when he names a guy "jack musgood" you know GRRM doesn't want you to give a fuck about him

maybe someone who understands language better can explain this but the pattern is blindingly obvious

Probably not. Jaime is in his mid 40's while Margaery is only about 18, meaning that after Jaime inevitably dies before her she will essentially have unchecked power over the Westerlands.
Tywin probably intended for Jaime to marry one of his cousins like Janei, Cerenna or Myrielle.
>>
>>218378522
That's why all the "Tyrion is a Targaryen" theories are so stupid. Tywin and Tyrion are so much alike but both would loathe to admit it. Several characters even comment on how similar they are and that Tyrion truly is Tywin's son.

I thought he and Cersei were younger. Cersei didnt have Joffrey until she was around 30??

>That's why all the "Tyrion is a Targaryen" theories are so stupid
they're obvious father and son, but that doesn't mean they don't have some tiny bit of targblood. Targshits married into half the great families in the realm, and those families married into the other half. Wouldn't shock me at all if they turned out to be secret targshits
>>
>>218378677
Tyrion is Tywins only trueborn son, Cersei and Jaimie are secret Targshits.

Correction, they're in their mid 30's and Margaery is only 14. Different ages but it's the same point. Tywin would pretty much just hand over the Westerlands to the Tyrells by betrothing them.

People who obsess over theory crap in fiction (such as everyone being a secret targ) usually don't care about thematic resonance or things actually having narrative meaning, they just want to be conspiratards about every single minute detail. If you try to explain to them why the Tywin/Tyrion dynamic hits so hard precisely because they're a father and son so alike in so many ways, to their brain it does not compute in any way.

I don't understand , shouldn't a plump/pudgy Rhaenyra (and Haelena) be more inclusive ? They're always ranting about different body types in media and given how much the showrunners care about this kind of shit, you'd think they would use the source material faithfully for once. Same with Nettles who got cut whereas she's the one canon brown girl

Tywin never would have come up with the Wildfire trick when Stannis was invading. Tyrion did a fine job but Tywin will never not find a reason to seethe over him.
